This job post is archived and the position is probably filled. Please do not apply.
We’re looking for a Senior Staff Writer to help deepen our coverage of the online business community at GrowthLab.com.\n\n**ABOUT US**\nWe build no-BS personal development brands that deliver real results. We currently run two:\n - I Will Teach You To Be Rich, which helps readers live a Rich Life by mastering their personal finances\n - GrowthLab, which helps readers start and grow an online business\n\nAcross both, we have more than 1 million readers every month. Each of our brands has an industry-leading suite of online courses that have changed the lives of tens of thousands of students, as well as contributions from a revolving door of industry all-stars. Our tiny team of remote employees has made quite the impact, but now we’re looking to go bigger. That’s where you come in.\n\n**ABOUT THE ROLE**\nWe’re looking for someone to drive our GrowthLab content on all channels: blog, email, video, and (occasionally) social media. The ideal person has experience writing for an entrepreneurial community and is just as comfortable writing a voice-y email to our community as interviewing entrepreneurs for an 8,000-word blog post about launching your first digital product.\n\n**In this role you can expect to:**\n - Write weekly posts for GrowthLab that help readers start and grow an online business. This will range from thought leadership, to features profiling successful entrepreneurs, to short tactical pieces.\n - Be read by nearly 1 million monthly readers and receive dozens of thoughtful comments per story.\n - Write emails to hundreds of thousands of email subscribers that help boost awareness of our content, as well as engage and aid the community.\n - Make a real, measurable impact on a growing publication with a small team. We’re not into bureaucracy.\n - Participate in our collaborative, fast-paced β€œwriters room” environment, and pitch ideas for all brands and all channels. Creativity is our guiding philosophy, and we have lots of fun with it.\n - Receive assignments as well as generate your own ideas.\n\nWe strive to make our free content better than most people's paid content, so the bar is high and we're constantly raising it.\n\nCompensation is commensurate with experience, but this is not an entry-level role.\n\nPerks include health coverage, 401k with match, technology and education stipends, the ability to live anywhere in the U.S., and work with some of the most interesting people in the world. This is a dream job for the right person.\n\n**ABOUT YOU**\n - You know why the community you’ll be covering cares about things like conversion rates, customer research, carrots, and organic traffic.\n - You’ve paid for an online course before.\n - You have opinions on what makes for a good publication and you’re not afraid to interface with the business side of building a media brand.\n - You have connections with vendors, entrepreneurs, experts, and authors in the online business space.\n - The idea of building a group of sources and diving into a community of active readers doesn’t scare you.\n - You know how to use both quantitative and qualitative feedback to improve your work.

\nJob Description:\n\nAre you passionate about education, software, and making an impact? Do you love learning new things, fixing bugs, and building better code? Then this may be the position for you!\n\nAt Trilogy Education Services, we’re creating innovative programs to train new audiences for careers in the digital economy. If you have strong skills in Full-Stack Development and enjoy resolving issues and maintaining code bases -- this may be the position for you!\n\nWe’re looking for ridiculously focused QA engineers -- capable of keeping our Full-Stack Curriculum working, up-to-date, and the best that it can be. We need people with an eye for spotting issues, a knack for continuous improvement, and a sense of humor to deal with problems that inevitably emerge along the way.\n\nWho You Are:\n\n\n* Someone with at least 2-4 years of real coding and/or QA experience. Self-taught dabblers are encouraged to apply, too! But you need to have demonstrable skills.\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who isn’t afraid of GitHub, merge conflicts, or sprint cycles. This job is all about closing issues and creating new ways to improve the curriculum -- one pull request a time.\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who is well-versed in best software practices and is genuinely passionate about teaching students to code the “right way.” If you’re the type of person who reads a textbook and finds yourself saying: “I could teach this a whole lot better…” then we should talk!\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who possesses strong writing and communication skills. We write as much as we code. As a Curriculum QA Engineer you’ll be responsible for wearing an editor’s hat one day and a coder’s jacket the next.\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who is a lot of fun! We want learning technology to be exciting, engaging, and a little funny. Imagine an engineering class that feels like a Disney movie. We need fun people to make this a reality.\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who is well versed in the bulk of the following:\n\n\n\n* HTML / CSS\n\n* JavaScript, jQuery\n\n* Node.js, Express\n\n* MySQL, MongoDB\n\n* Angular, React\n\n* GitHub\n\n* Travis CI (Major Plus)\n\n* Python, Pandas, NumPy (Major Plus)\n\n* Android or iOS Development (Major Plus)\n\n\n\n\n

\nAre you passionate about learning new technologies and teaching them to others? Do you love writing, speaking, and storytelling as much as you love coding? Then this may be the position for you!\n\n\nAt Trilogy Education Services, we’re creating innovative programs to train new audiences for careers in the digital economy. If you have strong skills in programming, mobile development, data analytics, UI/UX, networking, or cyber-security, we want to speak with you!\n\n\nWe’re looking for people with passion, a demonstrated ability to learn on their feet, and a desire to escape the cubicle and stretch their creative muscles in new ways. \n\n\nWho You Are:\n\n\n\n* Someone with at least 2-4 years of real coding or design experience. Self-taught dabblers are encouraged to apply, too! But you need to have demonstrable skills.\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who is always “creating.” This job is all about thinking on your feet and spinning quick and fun activities to demonstrate key concepts. You need to be someone who can dream up a proof of concept idea… then code or create it in a day or two.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who possesses strong writing and communication skills. We write as much as we code. If you’ve always wanted to write teen novellas while staring at for-loops, then you should definitely apply. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n* Someone who is a lot of fun! To do this, we built our own open-source event-sourcing toolkit for Clojure (https://github.com/rill-event-sourcing/rill). On occasion we host meetups like the Amsterdam Clojure meetup (http://www.meetup.com/The-Amsterdam-Clojure-Meetup-Group/events/222073611/) where we present our findings and progress.

\nHello! We’re Real HQ and we’re five years old. Since 2010, we’ve grown to 37 employees, maintained profitability, and significantly expanded our customer base. We have an office in Austin, TX but pride ourselves in being a remote company—more than half of our team is spread across the United States.\n\nOur Product team consists of two senior-level Rails developers and one frontend developer/designer. We maintain a custom-built, in-house CRM—creatively named Contacts—that supports our consumer-facing service, Agent Pronto.\n\nOver the next few months, we plan to expand our product line and add new services. In order to do that more quickly and efficiently, we’re hoping to round our three-person dev team up to an even four.\n\nWho You Are *fingers crossed*\n\nYou’re a seasoned Ruby on Rails developer who thrives in a flexible, self-directed environment. You have a history of delivering quality, scalable Ruby on Rails applications. You know what it’s like to be interrupted throughout your day and are excited to work with people that value the maker’s schedule. You transcend the left-brained developer stereotype, have an eye for design, and incorporate UX understanding into the things you build. Additionally:\n\n\n* You’re self-motivated to learn and incorporate new technologies and keep up with best practices.\n\n* You’re as comfortable writing code for the browser as you are code for the server.\n\n* You’re proficient with MySQL (database and query optimization is a plus).\n\n* You believe in the value of testing and rarely ship code without automated tests in place.\n\n* You have strong communication skills and are receptive to constructive feedback.\n\n* You have the ability to thoroughly, yet simply, explain features to everyday users.\n\n* You can clearly articulate your thoughts and feelings through writing.\n\n* You’re comfortable working on your own and are able to set ego aside when collaborating on features.\n\n* You’re not afraid to ask for help.\n\n\n\n\nHow We Make\n\nWe don’t separate “product” from “engineering”. Our dev team is the Product team, and we all take responsibility for defining features, collaborating on their design and implementation, and finally, announcing them to the team.\n\nWe build our products using the following tools and languages, and we’ll expect you to be proficient in each:\n\n\n* Ruby, Ruby on Rails\n\n* HTML (Haml)\n\n* CSS (Sass)\n\n* Javascript (jQuery, CoffeeScript, Ajax)\n\n* Data stores (MySQL, Redis, Memcached)\n\n* Testing tools (RSpec, Capybara)\n\n* Continuous integration and deployment\n\n* Linux\n\n* Git\n\n* Nice-to-haves: Bootstrap, Backbone.js\n\n\n\n\nWe communicate using Slack, Basecamp, Github, and Google Hangouts. Occasionally, we pair-code with Screenhero.\n\nSome Specifics\n\nWe’re looking to hire immediately for a full-time, salaried position. You can expect to be paid a competitive market rate and work around 40 hours per week. We request that you reside in the United States, but once hired, you’ll have the flexibility to work from anywhere. You can choose when to start and end work each day (though, we request at least some overlap with a 9-5 CST schedule). You’ll also be provided with the following perks and benefits:\n\n\n* Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage. We pay 100% of your premiums and 50% for your dependents.\n\n* Unlimited vacation.\n\n* Up to 12 weeks of paid maternity / paternity leave.\n\n* Laptop and phone upgrades every three years. We’ll also pay your monthly phone bill.\n\n* Ongoing education stipend to use toward conferences, seminars, etc.\n\n* Fringe benefits (books, software, etc.)\n\n\n\n\nWe understand that working remotely can get a bit lonely, so we’re happy to provide an office or coworking space near you. You’ll also be invited to attend departmental meetups and our annual company retreat, Real Life. Last year, we spent the week in Boulder, CO. This year, we’re flying everyone to South Lake Tahoe for a relaxing week of working and hanging out.\n\nThink You’re a Good Fit?\n\nTo learn more or to apply, send an email to [email protected] and include “rake” in the subject line. Also, let us know how you found this job posting. We won’t dictate the format of your application beyond that, so be thoughtful and creative. The application process will include several interviews, a remote pairing session or coding assignment, and a final, in-person interview in Austin (we’ll fly you in and host you). Thanks for looking, and good luck!

\nThe Lead Developer for our college readiness skills learning support system, called JUICE, will have a unique opportunity to own the MEAN technology stack and software development for an innovative tutorial learning system we’re creating for College for America (CfA)  at Southern New Hampshire University.  CfA is an online, radically affordable, competency-based program for underserved working adults. We’ve been nationally recognized for innovation and received a 4-year First in the World grant from the US Department of Education to design and develop a fully online competency-based learning system to support students’ foundational college readiness skills in an entirely new way. We’re completing the learning design phase now, we have a key technology partner on board for educational game design, and we’re looking for the right senior software engineer with great experience who is looking for an opportunity to own application development for this new learning technology. We work as a small, cross-functional team within a very friendly group of creative, smart educators at College for America. We work remotely as well as onsite here in the Manchester office.\n\nJUICE is being developed in a Cloud-based, modular architecture based on the MEAN stack (MongoDB-Express-AngularJS-Node.js) for delivery of the learning experiences.  JUICE technology makes ample use of open source software and low-initial investment services. JUICE is designed for longer-term growth within CfA following the research phase, and is also designed for extensibility and open sharing as part of the Department of Education’s First in The World (FITW) program goals. JUICE development includes an LTI-based integration with the CfA learning management system. The JUICE production environment will support a randomized control trial study, while continuing development for a full product launch following completion of the study.\n\nThe Lead Developer is the primary software engineer and oversees the work of key external partners for development of mini-games, widgets, or content authoring tools. The Lead Developer consults with a Senior Technology Advisor on strategy, software architecture, and system operations. The Senior Developer reports to the Deputy Director of JUICE and works in a small, fast-paced cross-functional team as a key partner in all aspects of designing and building, creating interactive learning content experiences, conducting efficacy research, and delivering the JUICE learning system. \n\nWorking remotely within North America is an option, but we cannot consider employees overseas, unfortunately.\n\nThis position is also posted on the Southern New Hampshire University website at https://snhu.peopleadmin.com/postings/14754. SNHU is a great college to work for, as shown by our high ranking in The Chronicle of Higher Education’s “Great Colleges to Work for 2014” survey!

\nTechnology isn’t the answer to questions of poverty, public health, education, and the environment, but it shouldn’t be the problem. The current landscape is disjointed and it’s prohibitively difficult for most NGOs to turn promising technologies into better decisions. We’re building an AppStore and data-integration platform that helps social-impact organizations find, connect, and successfully implement key technologies. openFn is a non-profit, open-source project that's funded both by forward thinking foundations and revenue from our integration product.\n\nAs the first full-time senior technical hire you’ll own the codebase. It’s built on Ruby, PostgreSQL, Angular.js, and Heroku. The core functions are (1) guiding users to the right external technologies (e.g., electronic medical record systems, analytics tools, data capture apps, mobile payment systems, sms gateways, etc.), then (2) allowing them to build complex data integrations across these technologies through a simple, point-and-click interface. You’ll have leeway to redesign the stack if necessary, ensuring that the platform is optimally efficient as more and more endpoint technologies are added.\nYou’ll work primarily with openFn's founder, Taylor Downs, winner of the first annual Harvard SECON Social Impact Award, member of Forbes 30 under 30, and co-founder and former CEO of Vera Solutions—technology partner to over 125 leading impact-first organizations in over 40 countries. You’ll also have access to programming support from our external development firm and collaborate with product designers and developers around the world who are building technologies for social change.\n

\nWho you are\n\nWe are looking for talented & creative engineers to join our growing team, and help us build great products.\n\n\n* You have 3-5 years of experience as a mid to senior level engineer\n\n* You're used to working with Rails & Ruby and you have advanced experience building RESTful web services & APIs\n\n* You have experience working with a variety of languages, with a strong grasp of their pros & cons\n\n* You're a kind & respectful person, invested in contributing to a wonderful team culture (bullies & big egos strictly not allowed)\n\n* You are occasionally enthusiastic to the point of being profoundly uncool\n\n* You get insanely excited by at least 1 thing that has absolutely nothing to do with computers\n\n\n\n\nSome other things that would be really nice to have ... \n\n\n* Strong front-end development skills\n\n* Experience designing service-oriented architecture\n\n* Web operations or system administration experience\n\n\n\n\nWhat we build\n\nWe are organized into small cross-functional product teams (a PM, a designer, a few devs) that focus on growing a single product from glimmer to gamechanger. Each team is free to determine their own tools & process. What are these teams working on?\n\n\n* Data & systems that support our global campus business - https://generalassemb.ly/locations\n\n* Evolving large applications into an ecosystem of microservices\n\n* Innovative online education experiences for consumer & enterprise users - https://generalassemb.ly/education/web-design-circuit\n\n* Platforms to connect our community of students & alumni - http://profiles.ga.co\n\n* Internal tools supporting every part of our organization \n\n\n\n\nWhat it's like to be on the team\n\n\n* We use GitHub for code review, Code Climate and Semaphore to keep entropy at bay, and Heroku to focus on building things\n\n* We favor trying new things over fear of mistakes\n\n* We are anti-dogmatic: use whatever code editor you like, pair-program when you like\n\n* We try to seek a balance between sticking with what works and fearlessly exploring the new\n\n* We are always learning, always teaching\n\n* We are passionate about writing good code\n\n* We apologize for and learn from our mistakes\n\n* We have worked hard to build a culture of trust, continual improvement, and mutual support\n\n\n\n\nWe <3 remotes!\n\nEven though GA is headquartered in New York City, more than half of our engineering team is not. We remote in from little towns and big cities from California to the Netherlands. And even our New York devs spend the odd day (or month) working from home or elsewhere.\n\nWe are serious about making remote collaboration work, with tools like Slack, Skype, and Screenhero becoming a big part of our daily lives.\n\nFour times a year, we fly the whole engineering team to New York for a few days of workshops, lightning talks, urban adventures, and an epic hackathon.\n\nBenefits\n\nPosition is full-time with competitive salary, stock options and great benefits. NYC or Remote. Benefits include: 401k, iPhone + cell plan, Macbook + 27' monitor, medical + dental + vision insurance, MTA transit credit and 50% discounted gym membership (in NYC).

\nAre you someone who can take a vision of really neat end-user functionality and architect an application that will turn that vision into reality? \n\nYou know that people with vision aren’t always the best at turning it into an operational reality.\n\nYou also know that people who write really good code often don’t consider the bigger picture of what they’re doing it for.\n\nYou consider yourself to be the bridge between the 2.\n\nWe are on the search for a skilled and experienced Software Architect. Your primary responsibilities will be to help create enhancements to existing products and to create new products from concept to launch as part of a cross-functional project team.\n\nYou will design, implement, and test solutions that result in compelling and easy-to-use products.\n\n In more detail, you will:\n\n\n* Develop software solutions by studying information needs, systems flow, data usage, and work processes; investigate problem areas; utilize agile software development techniques; and confer with users.\n\n* Provide engineering support when building, deploying, configuring, and supporting solutions for customers and their problems.\n\n* Scope large elements of projects and calculate estimated delivery.\n\n* Review complex existing code in order to refactor and improve it.\n\n* Investigate, analyze, and make recommendations to management regarding technology improvements, upgrades, and modifications.\n\n* Document and demonstrate solutions by developing documentation, flowcharts, layouts, diagrams, charts, code comments, and clear code.\n\n* Prepare and install solutions by determining and designing system specifications, standards, and programming.\n\n* Support and develop software engineers by providing advice, coaching, and educational opportunities.\n\n* Help customers as a technical expert in the delivery of solutions.\n\n\n
