\nSenior developer\n\nClosing date: Open until filled\n\nDo you love modern web technologies? Are you a team player who likes solving difficult problems together? Do you want to join one of the UK’s most exciting tech start-ups and play a key role in developing an ambitious product with a global impact?\n\nFlourish is empowering the world to visualize and tell stories with data. It enables anyone to create beautiful graphics, presentations and interactive stories without coding. Since our launch in 2018, more than 500,000 registered users have produced more than 5 million graphics, which have racked up more than ten billion views.\n\nOur customers include leading newsrooms (such as BBC and FT), major corporates (such as Goldman Sachs and Moody’s), NGOs (Amnesty, Rockefeller) plus universities all over the world.\n\nWe’re looking for a senior developer to join our team, reporting to the head of software development.\n\nThe role\n\nYou’ll be the technical lead in one of our small development teams, overseeing the creation of significant new features on the Flourish platform. Your team will:\n\n\n* Develop new features for Flourish, using modern web technologies\n\n* Maintain standards for web performance, security and accessibility\n\n* Build automated tests and improve the observability of the codebase\n\n* Pair-program and review code\n\n* Help improve the way we work and the tools we use\n\n\n\n\nThis is a thoroughly hands-on development role: most of your time will be spent working with code. But you will also mentor and manage other developers and work closely with the product team.\n\nThis role is focused on the Flourish back-end platform rather than the visualization templates, which are developed separately.\n\nAbout you\n\nYou are an experienced developer who enjoys working collaboratively and loves to learn new things. You care deeply about the quality of your work and are thoughtful about how to improve both what you’re doing and how the team works together. You’re happy to adopt existing conventions of the code base.\n\nImportantly, you’re excited by Flourish and the opportunity to make it better. You’re a friendly colleague and you work well in a close-knit team.\n\nMust-have skills\n\n\n* A deep understanding of the web platform\n\n* At least five years experience as a full-stack developer\n\n* Strong JavaScript and Node.js skills\n\n* Competence with command-line Linux and shell scripting\n\n* Good SQL skills\n\n* Be comfortable using Git for version control, and understand why clear history matters\n\n* Familiarity with working practices such as test-driven development, continuous integration and continuous delivery\n\n* Experience of agile methodologies\n\n* Awareness of security best practices for web applications\n\n\n\n\nNice-to-have skills\n\n\n* AWS (S3, EC2, IAM, etc)\n\n* PostgreSQL\n\n* Infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Puppet\n\n\n\n\nPerson attributes\n\n\n* An enthusiasm for learning and teaching\n\n* A systematic approach to solving problems\n\n* A love of the web and an interest in performance\n\n* The ability to give feedback kindly and receive feedback\n\n\n\n\nAbout us\n\n\n* \n\nOur tech stack: Some of the technologies we use include Node.js, Express; Postgres, Redis; Handlebars, Sass; AWS; Cypress; GitHub, CircleCI, Sentry. We don’t expect you to have worked with all of these, but any you have are a plus.\n\n\n* \n\nOur company: Flourish is a small team combining decades of collective experience in development, data, design, visualization and journalism/publishing. Read more about the team.\n\n\n* \n\nOur culture: We’re a friendly and supportive group that values kindness, honesty and fun. We’re open and try new things with enthusiasm. And we’re high-momentum, focused on delivering magical products that our users love. We socialise as a team at least once a month.\n\n\n* \n\nOur interview process: We make our hiring process fast and straightforward. Typically there is brief initial call and online screening test, followed by an interview designed to be rigorous but friendly and collaborative. We’ll ask you to do some pair-programming with us, to get a sense for how you communicate, but we don’t do stressful whiteboard coding.\n\n\n* \n\nOur location: We are largely a UK-based team, with a few exceptions. We used to be based in a fun office in Clerkenwell in central London. This was closed at the start of the COVID crisis, and we intend to get a new office in London in 2021, most likely in the Shoreditch area, but we do support remote working.\n\n\n\n\n\nBenefits\n\n\n* Salary from £60–80k depending on skill and experience\n\n* Remote working is welcome (the majority of our development team is remote), though after lockdown lifts, it would be a plus if you could be at our London office every few weeks for sprint planning/retros and socials\n\n* ‘20% time’ for developers on Fridays - you can choose what to work on, as long as it’s relevant to the company’s mission\n\n* Share options in a rapidly growing company\n\n* Flexible hours, and respect for work/life balance (not “startup hours”)\n\n* Lots of potential for career progression\n\n* 30 days’ annual holiday\n\n\n\n\nTo apply\n\nSend a CV, and a covering letter explaining why you’re interested in this role and how you meet the description above, to [email protected] Please use the subject line “Software Engineer”. Got questions about the job? Feel free to email us for a chat.\n\nWe’re committed to equality and diversity in the tech industry, so we’ll be especially happy to see applications from under-represented backgrounds.\n\nSorry, but we won’t be able to sponsor visas for this role: please do not apply if you do not already have the right to work in the UK. We are not accepting applications from recruitment agencies for this role.\n\nNot right for you?\n\nPlease spread the word instead! And join our mailing list to stay posted about Flourish.

\nThe No-Bullshit-iest Way We Can Describe This Job In The Least Amount Of Words In A Run-On Sentence: \n\nWe build a lot of different kinds of stuff for a lot of different kinds of folks (https://sanbornagency.com/work/) at a shop that is big enough to bite off important, meaningful work and small enough to have fun doing it and we’re looking for an engineer who is equally at ease talking to clients, designers, producers, and developers about things like scope, resource allocation, solutions to engineering problems, creative ideas for how to build things, ways to articulate technical complexity to normal business humans...and occasionally...cut some code.\n\nHere’s What We Think You Probably Need to Be Successful At This Job: \n\n\n* Have agency experience, leading a development team spread across multiple projects and clients.\n\n* Hands on developer and leader\n\n* Are comfortable reviewing project specifications, collaborating with company leadership to develop project estimates and technical specs\n\n* Experienced in code reviews to adhere to best practices and internal standards, providing feedback and following up on remediation\n\n* You have an ear to the ground for new tech, whether it comes from hacker news or a programming subreddit, and a desire to dive in and try it out.\n\n* Experience in architecting and building bespoke custom WordPress themes using Advanced Custom Fields, Gravity Forms, Yoast with custom integrations to third party systems.\n\n* Experience in client and server-side debugging, performance profiling and optimization techniques with an uncanny intuition for finding the cause and solution\n\n* Experience with integration of analytics, a/b testing, and advertising platforms using Google Tag Manager\n\n* Planning out projects in coordination with Project Manager/Producer and Developer team members, participating in project check-ins providing feedback to the team\n\n* Jumping in to assist developers who are in need of aid in implementation and/or troubleshooting of backend or frontend development goals\n\n* Aiding and/or leading bug triage in coordination with Project Manager throughout project and during QA\n\n* Comfortable working with small projects (1 dev) and medium projects (2-3 devs)\n\n* Experienced in concepting high-level architectures and codifying them in visual and written documentation\n\n* Experienced with CI / CD build automation tools such as DeployBot, Jenkins, and Travis CI\n\n* Comfortable in architecting and implementation of APIs in PHP/Laravel, NodeJS/Express and other similar stacks.\n\n* Attention to detail and a seamless user experience.  This means making the product look like the design and working with your team to make it smooth and perfect.\n\n* You have real-world experience with React.  AngularJS knowledge might be transferable, but React is what we're looking for.\n\n* jQuery is "nice to have" but NOT necessary in your arsenal.  You respect the finer points of the browser rendering pipeline and know when to 3D transform (and when NOT to).  Oh, and calls to GetComputedStyle make you shudder, especially when jQuery is obfuscating them.\n\n* You do so much Wordpress that you have strongly-held opinions about its future, its architecture, and the "right ways" to build with WP.  We keep our stack lean and don't go plugin-heavy.\n\n* You have strong opinions on, and respect for, the design process.\n\n* We mostly do a lot of HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL and JavaScript -- we keep it lean and get the job done.\n\n* You know your way around configuring a local development environment with help from the Interwebz, of course.\n\n* You know what DevOps is but aren't necessarily a zealot for any one process, technology, or denomination.\n\n* You have a willingness to express yourself through animated gifs and obscure movie quotes from the youtubes.\n\n* You work well at the 11th hour, but even better at the first and second so we can be out by happy hour.\n\n* You're down with remote work. We've got offices in NY / LA but we encourage working from home, from coffee shops, from wherever you feel most comfortable. We've got tools in place to keep communication going online and we love that we can all be in different parts of the country and work together.\n\n* We constantly improve only because we don't bullshit each other or our clients. We don't hide; we don't say what we think others want to hear. We do our work with respect, and we value truth, transparency, and honesty above all else.\n\n\n
