Howdy 👋We’re the folks at Jilt, an email marketing platform built for eCommerce. We help thousands of stores surprise and delight their customers with emails that drive sales. We’re looking for a driven, detail-oriented engineer to join our team and build fast, scalable backend systems in Rails.{linebreak}{linebreak}**The Role**{linebreak}{linebreak}You’ll work closely with your teammates on the engineering team to design, create, and refine systems that power the core platform; things like syncing data with external eCommerce platforms, optimizing our sending architecture & scheduler, and analyzing browsing & shopping behavior data. Jilt is built as a traditional Rails 5.2 app, with Postgres & Elasticsearch for persistence, and Sidekiq for background jobs. We use Angular (v1) to power our visual email editor and Vue.js for some areas with a lot of dynamic content, and are actively replacing both with React, so you’ll be able to help architect the APIs that will drive those new interfaces.{linebreak}{linebreak}While the majority of your time will be spent working on backend systems & features, you’ll also have the opportunity to work on various front-end systems, like fixing a bug with our email editor, replacing a legacy Slim template with a React view, or adding a new feature to our storefront JS.{linebreak}{linebreak}As one of our senior engineers, the team will look to you for advice and direction. You’ll help shape our best practices, decide on libraries & tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. You’ll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Here are some things you may do on a given day:**{linebreak}* Research and write a pitch to improve the performance of our email scheduling system{linebreak}* Refactor our storage subsystem to abstract how we handle file uploads{linebreak}* Troubleshoot an issue with our campaign segmentation feature by deep diving into our Elasticsearch cluster{linebreak}* Analyze a slow SQL query and suggest ways to improve it{linebreak}* Construct a detailed, multi-step data migration to split an existing model into two, with zero-downtime and including complicated data transformations{linebreak}* Triage the Sentry queue for any exceptions that need investigation{linebreak}* Develop a new API endpoint to support updated React components{linebreak}{linebreak}**On the first day you will:**{linebreak}* Meet your team and get familiar with how we work{linebreak}* Setup your local environment and tooling{linebreak}* Commit a small tweak to the codebase and ship it to production{linebreak}{linebreak}**In the first week you will:**{linebreak}* Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement{linebreak}* Participate in code review for a teammate’s code{linebreak}* Help a team member with fixing a bug{linebreak}{linebreak}**In the first month you will:**{linebreak}* Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature{linebreak}* Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues{linebreak}* Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project{linebreak}{linebreak}**Who you’ll work with:**{linebreak}* Justin Stern, CTO - You’ll work with Justin to deeply understand our codebase, and learn how the various parts of our systems work together.{linebreak}* Beka Rice, Head of Product - Beka will help you learn our platform, in detail, and all the ways that our customers use Jilt.{linebreak}* You’ll also work with the rest of the product & engineering teams (Ivan, Lucas, Jonathan, Wes, Artan, Jared, Chase) to review one another’s work and collaborate on projects.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}**You**{linebreak}{linebreak}**To succeed in this position, you should have:**{linebreak}* Deep experience & proficiency in Ruby & Rails{linebreak}* Demonstrated ability to break larger epics out into smaller discrete stories with detailed implementation tasks{linebreak}* Experience working on the front-end and excitement for combining front-end frameworks like React alongside Rails{linebreak}* Familiarity working with external APIs (have experience with eCommerce platforms? This is a bonus — tell us!){linebreak}{linebreak}You love writing code that’s clear, self-documenting (but you know that self-documenting doesn’t mean no comments), and standards-compliant. You prefer writing Ruby, but are comfortable in JavaScript or picking up other languages (like Go or PHP) as needed. You have deep experience working with Rails and all of its libraries and know when to roll a custom solution to a problem or use a gem. You’ve worked with Sidekiq or a similar background processing system, and understand the subtle but important guidelines to follow when architecting performant, fault-tolerant background workers.{linebreak}{linebreak}You also love data and working with complex queries in SQL, whether as part of ActiveRecord or on the console. You have experience with Elasticsearch, or are excited to learn it, and are interested in the challenges involved with keeping separate datastores in sync. You love keeping up-to-date with the latest best practices and tools, and are constantly tweaking and improving the way you work. You know how to operate a hydraulic press, or least watched a YouTube video about them and think they’re totally rad.{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re excited to solve engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible, and most importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.{linebreak}{linebreak}Finally, you can’t wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. You’re an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a retrospective. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand. {linebreak}{linebreak}Our team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and weekly stand-ups via Zoom (a few short meetings) — we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time that’s free of distractions.{linebreak}{linebreak}As a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip), which brought the entire team out to Lake Tahoe, California for a week. It’s a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest. {linebreak}{linebreak}This is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Process**{linebreak}{linebreak}After an initial screening, you’ll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, you’ll have a few 45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company. {linebreak}{linebreak}The most qualified candidates will then be invited to complete a short one-day research project. If this goes well, we'll invite you to the final stage of our evaluation process: the trial project. During this ~2 week period, you'll work closely with your future manager, as well as a few other team members, as a paid contractor to implement your proposal from the research project. You'll be welcomed in Slack, introduced to any team members you may be working with, and will have regular chats with your future manager to share feedback and make sure all is going well. This brief trial period is a great way for you to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it also gives us an opportunity to do the same. At the end of the period, assuming a great experience for all, you'll be offered a full time position 🎉Then the real fun and full onboarding experience will begin! 😄{linebreak}{linebreak}**Benefits**{linebreak}{linebreak}Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:{linebreak}* Competitive salary{linebreak}* 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀){linebreak}* Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents){linebreak}* 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents){linebreak}* 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers{linebreak}* Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection{linebreak}* Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive{linebreak}* Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences){linebreak}* Home office or co-working allowance{linebreak}* A Kindle to help you keep learning{linebreak}{linebreak}*We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.*

{linebreak}Help fix the legal industry!{linebreak}{linebreak}The way legal transactions are done is filled with inefficiencies, which leads to ridiculously high legal fees. We're fixing this by building software that automates and streamlines the process.{linebreak}{linebreak}We're profitable and growing sustainably. We're one of the most popular ways for high-growth technology startups to incorporate. Y Combinator and 500 Startups both use our software to handle their investment paperwork. Our product is used by tons of top tier startups and investors.{linebreak}{linebreak}We're a quiet leader in the legal technology space - we're working on a ton of really innovative software (far beyond what we've released publicly).  If you are interested in changing the legal industry, this is arguably the best place to be.{linebreak}{linebreak}Notes on our stack and processes:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Our front-end is mostly in Backbone, but we're moving to Ember.{linebreak}{linebreak}* We love OOCSS.{linebreak}{linebreak}* We only support modern browsers.{linebreak}{linebreak}* We use CI extensively for linting, tests, visual diffs, and deployment.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Our backend is mostly in Ruby on Rails, with some Scala and Go as well.{linebreak}{linebreak}* We're not religious about any particular technology - we believe in using the right tool for a given problem.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}This is a great fit if you want to work:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... at a product-driven company bringing an old-fashioned industry into the future{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... on a complex product, with a ton of engineering challenges{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... on a well-loved product with a lot of usage and visibility in the startup community{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... in a company that strongly values good software development practices{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... at a financially sound company{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... with bright people who are extremely passionate about their work{linebreak}{linebreak}* ... where you'll be a key early software engineer{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}This position can be either co-located or remote (completely up to you). If you're co-located, you can have your office (if you want). We're located in Burlingame, California - within walking / biking distance of Millbrae Caltrain / BART.{linebreak}{linebreak}We are only looking directly for full-time employees - we are absolutely not interested in agencies, contractors, or recruiters.

{linebreak}Hello! We’re Real HQ and we’re five years old. Since 2010, we’ve grown to 37 employees, maintained profitability, and significantly expanded our customer base. We have an office in Austin, TX but pride ourselves in being a remote company—more than half of our team is spread across the United States.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our Product team consists of two senior-level Rails developers and one frontend developer/designer. We maintain a custom-built, in-house CRM—creatively named Contacts—that supports our consumer-facing service, Agent Pronto.{linebreak}{linebreak}Over the next few months, we plan to expand our product line and add new services. In order to do that more quickly and efficiently, we’re hoping to round our three-person dev team up to an even four.{linebreak}{linebreak}Who You Are *fingers crossed*{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re a seasoned Ruby on Rails developer who thrives in a flexible, self-directed environment. You have a history of delivering quality, scalable Ruby on Rails applications. You know what it’s like to be interrupted throughout your day and are excited to work with people that value the maker’s schedule. You transcend the left-brained developer stereotype, have an eye for design, and incorporate UX understanding into the things you build. Additionally:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* You’re self-motivated to learn and incorporate new technologies and keep up with best practices.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You’re as comfortable writing code for the browser as you are code for the server.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You’re proficient with MySQL (database and query optimization is a plus).{linebreak}{linebreak}* You believe in the value of testing and rarely ship code without automated tests in place.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You have strong communication skills and are receptive to constructive feedback.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You have the ability to thoroughly, yet simply, explain features to everyday users.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You can clearly articulate your thoughts and feelings through writing.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You’re comfortable working on your own and are able to set ego aside when collaborating on features.{linebreak}{linebreak}* You’re not afraid to ask for help.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}How We Make{linebreak}{linebreak}We don’t separate “product” from “engineering”. Our dev team is the Product team, and we all take responsibility for defining features, collaborating on their design and implementation, and finally, announcing them to the team.{linebreak}{linebreak}We build our products using the following tools and languages, and we’ll expect you to be proficient in each:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Ruby, Ruby on Rails{linebreak}{linebreak}* HTML (Haml){linebreak}{linebreak}* CSS (Sass){linebreak}{linebreak}* Javascript (jQuery, CoffeeScript, Ajax){linebreak}{linebreak}* Data stores (MySQL, Redis, Memcached){linebreak}{linebreak}* Testing tools (RSpec, Capybara){linebreak}{linebreak}* Continuous integration and deployment{linebreak}{linebreak}* Linux{linebreak}{linebreak}* Git{linebreak}{linebreak}* Nice-to-haves: Bootstrap, Backbone.js{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}We communicate using Slack, Basecamp, Github, and Google Hangouts. Occasionally, we pair-code with Screenhero.{linebreak}{linebreak}Some Specifics{linebreak}{linebreak}We’re looking to hire immediately for a full-time, salaried position. You can expect to be paid a competitive market rate and work around 40 hours per week. We request that you reside in the United States, but once hired, you’ll have the flexibility to work from anywhere. You can choose when to start and end work each day (though, we request at least some overlap with a 9-5 CST schedule). You’ll also be provided with the following perks and benefits:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage. We pay 100% of your premiums and 50% for your dependents.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Unlimited vacation.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Up to 12 weeks of paid maternity / paternity leave.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Laptop and phone upgrades every three years. We’ll also pay your monthly phone bill.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Ongoing education stipend to use toward conferences, seminars, etc.{linebreak}{linebreak}* Fringe benefits (books, software, etc.){linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}We understand that working remotely can get a bit lonely, so we’re happy to provide an office or coworking space near you. You’ll also be invited to attend departmental meetups and our annual company retreat, Real Life. Last year, we spent the week in Boulder, CO. This year, we’re flying everyone to South Lake Tahoe for a relaxing week of working and hanging out.{linebreak}{linebreak}Think You’re a Good Fit?{linebreak}{linebreak}To learn more or to apply, send an email to [email protected] and include “rake” in the subject line. Also, let us know how you found this job posting. We won’t dictate the format of your application beyond that, so be thoughtful and creative. The application process will include several interviews, a remote pairing session or coding assignment, and a final, in-person interview in Austin (we’ll fly you in and host you). Thanks for looking, and good luck!

{linebreak}If you’re smart, passionate about technology and enjoy solving complex technical challenges then you should apply to join our best-in-class tech team. We believe that people are our most important asset and one worth protecting. As such, we’re known for creating an enviable working culture to keep our employees smiling on a day to day basis. {linebreak}{linebreak}We offer things such as flexible hours, remote working, fortnigtly hackathons and freedom to work on projects of individual interest to name just a few. In fact, our impressive working culture has recently earned us 1st place in the Sunday Times 100 Best Companies to Work for 2015. {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}We have two different positions.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}1. Senior Developers who would like to lead a team / projects - We envisage the split here being about 70% hands-on coding and 30% leading the team, liaising with product owners on prioritization work, attending iteration planning meetings with stakeholders, delegating tasks to dev team, and making sure we are following Lean / Agile processes correctly.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}2. Senior Developers who want to be 100% coders (non-lead) - This role will be 100% hands on working with our other Devs to code beautiful products for our customers! {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Some of our Current Projects: {linebreak}{linebreak}Seedy - Our custom built CMS. A hybrid, markdown based, sinatra driven CMS but with a TDD undercurrent. Content changes are no different to backend refactoring. Templates are written in a custom DSL that enforces our style guide while still supporting iterative changes and automatic deployment. Across the company people (including business teams) are now being tagged in pull requests and even writing code!{linebreak}{linebreak}Aerie - We’re overhauling our data and analytics architecture. Using the latest approaches in event streaming, we are building a brand new data pipeline based on Kinesis and Redshift that will support the analysis of both structured and semi-structured data in near real-time. This will provide rapid and intuitive customer insight to our decision makers, while also providing exciting machine learning capabilities back to our core product offering.{linebreak}{linebreak}AAA - We are enhancing our new world platform. Our current focus is on security with a view to building out ‘infrastructure as code’ using tools such as AWS CloudFormation, AWS OpsWorks, Chef/Puppet and many others. Essentially, we believe a well architected system allows us to avoid unnecessary complexity and can enable individuals to generate great output.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our Tech Stack{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Ruby{linebreak}{linebreak}* Rails                                                                                                                            {linebreak}{linebreak}* Scala  {linebreak}{linebreak}* MongoDB{linebreak}{linebreak}* RabbitMQ{linebreak}{linebreak}* Puppet/Boxen{linebreak}{linebreak}* AWS                                                                                                                        {linebreak}{linebreak}* Hadoop / RedShift / Looker /Tableau{linebreak}{linebreak}* Cucumber / RSpec / Jasmine                              {linebreak}{linebreak}* SASS / HAML / HTML5 / CSS3 / JavaScript / CoffeeScript / jQuery{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}This list changes all the time, as being on the lookout for new technology trials and opportunities is part of our code. We don’t believe in limiting ourselves, or the company. If there are other tools that could get the job done better, we’re committed to exploring them.{linebreak}{linebreak}Things we believe in:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* TDD / BDD{linebreak}{linebreak}* Continuous Delivery{linebreak}{linebreak}* Pair Programming{linebreak}{linebreak}* Build – Measure - Learn{linebreak}{linebreak}* Active participation to open source{linebreak}{linebreak}* Our business people writing code (we've not seen this anywhere else!)                                {linebreak}{linebreak}* Cross functional teams (Dev / QA/ Data / UX / Product owners all sitting together)            {linebreak}{linebreak}* Release early and learn quickly - we release our software to production around 15 times a day on average!        {linebreak}{linebreak}* Continuous learning - we look to pay for courses and conferences and actively encourage our Devs to get out and about in the community. We have even sent some of our Devs to Miami, Portugal and Barcelona for conferences recently.                                                              {linebreak}{linebreak}* Have fun! We do ruby coding challenges during lunchtimes over pizza, we have desk beers on a friday, we have several social events throughout the year, we do fortnightly hackathons, we have afterwork clubs like: UX, Data science and Robotics club, we have flexible working hours, weekly 'show n tell' sessions, and lot's more!                                                                                                 {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}

{linebreak}We are a small, established, and profitable technology company providing online exam software to customers in over 25 countries. We are looking for a senior developer to join our team. You can work remote as long as you overlap with the U.S. Eastern Time zone.{linebreak}{linebreak}This is a great job for someone who loves technology and wants to work on a cool project without big company bureaucracy. You won’t be pigeonholed into doing the same thing every day. In fact, the ability to wear multiple hats is essential. Here are some of the roles you’ll play on the team:{linebreak}{linebreak}Handson Programmer. As a Senior Developer, you will definitely write code. Most of it will be Python, JavaScript or SQL. You may have to set up an Ubuntu server or write a Python module for a new feature or script a Webbased API to integrate with another application.{linebreak}{linebreak}R&D engineer. As our product evolves and our company grows you will assist us in evaluating new technologies, designing product architecture, and thinking through Internet security issues.{linebreak}{linebreak}Design Opinionator. While we won’t ask you to fire up Photoshop, you can certainly help us find JavaScript widgets or CSS tricks that make the site drive better and more fun to use. We don’t stuff programmers into code hell; feedback on all aspects of product development is expected and encouraged.
