Vaan Group is hiring a Remote Senior Frontend Engineer

Hi there! Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Xavier Armand and I am the co-founder of The Vaan Group (www.vaangroup.com): a fully remote UX design and engineering agency with headquarters in NYC. Weโ€™re looking to hire a senior frontend engineer to work on e-commerce projects. \n\nWe build commerce engines. We're not a 360 agency. We're not a marketing agency. We're a design and engineering studio. Thatโ€™s our difference. Our e-commerce stores are designed and built to give our clients a technical edge over their competition. To do this, we synthesize business requirements, UX requirements, marketing requirements, technology requirements and creative requirements into a single digital shopping experience built for our clients and their consumers โ€“ a commerce engine. Our technology becomes the foundation upon which business' scale their operations, escalate their marketing efforts and grow their sales. The value of our work is defined by how big of a moat our clientsโ€™ technology creates between them, their competition, and Amazon.\n\nOur clients range from large e-commerce enterprises (>$100M per year) to successful mid-stage ($1M - $100M per year) direct to consumer (DTC) e-commerce brands. We very often work with the following platforms: Shopify Plus, Contentful. DatoCMS, ReCharge Payments, and Algolia\n\nWeโ€™re a realistic group, not looking for rockstar ninja wizards or whatever people say these days. Our team resides (or is working from) around the USA, Poland, Spain, Brazil, and Norway. We are looking for someone with Shopify experience who's built custom frontend experiences (themes, apps, features). \nYou should be comfortable working solo or leading a team.\nYou should feel comfortable taking responsibility for a completion and launch of a project.\nYou should care about the quality of the code and the output.\nYou would work closely with our CTO.\n\nBy experience I mean we're looking for someone who's led the development of commercially available e-commerce websites or apps built or integrated with Shopify. \n\n Agencies are problem solvers by nature - we often march forward with 70% of a brief and our clients expect us to complete the puzzle. A perfect candidate has well-formed opinions, great discipline, naturally established work habits, and takes delight in their work.\n\nA great quote about what we're looking for from people who have been managing remote teams longer than us:\n\n"Everyone has to be an A-player. Remote team members are used to four to six hours of focused, uninterrupted work every day. You have to be able to get through problems on your own and be productive without asking for help. Thereโ€™s no substitute for skill and experience in those cases."\n\nWe look forward to hearing from you!\n\n#Location\nEurope or Latin America

Shopify is now permanently remote and working towards a future that is digital by default. Learn more about what this can mean for you.\n\nShopify is the leading cloud-based, multi-channel commerce platform. Merchants can use the software to design, set up, and manage their stores across multiple sales channels, including web, mobile, social media, marketplaces, and brick-and-mortar locations. The platform also provides merchants with a powerful back-office and a single view of their business. Shopify was engineered for reliability and scale, making enterprise-level technology available to businesses of all sizes. Shopify powers over 1,000,000 businesses in over 175 countries โ€” and hereโ€™s how weโ€™ve been helping more merchants survive, thrive, and navigate the impacts of COVID-19.\n \nShopify is on a fast-moving mission to make the best products for merchants, buyers, and partners around the globe โ€” and engineers play a vital role in building that future. Here are just some of the stories from the engineering teams who build and scale Shopify.\n \n*Intrigued? Thatโ€™s great! Weโ€™re looking for Senior Software Developers to join our team, and maybe youโ€™re the person weโ€™re looking for!*\n\n**What types of Senior Software Developers might be interested in joining?**\n \n**Backend Development**\n\nAt Shopify, Backend Developers with a passion for solving tough problems with performant code work on teams that ship on quality instead of on time. Our teams deploy new code many times a day, and our production scale is massive. Weโ€™re talking over 1 million online stores, and hundreds of millions of requests a day. Thousands of entrepreneurs will see your work within seconds โ€“ a difficult but incredibly rewarding responsibility. Shopify is the largest Ruby on Rails application in the world and we're a big part of the Rails community. Weโ€™re constantly improving our codebase to make it even better.\n \n**Mobile Development (React Native, Android & iOS)**\n\nOur Mobile Developers work along with designers and product managers to build and launch new features for our apps. Youโ€™ll work on large-scale apps that are ever-changing, enabling entrepreneurship for hundreds of thousands of entrepreneurs. Our Android developers use Kotlin and our iOS developers use Swift. Our teams are increasingly working with React Native so openness to cross-platform mobile development is a plus!\n \n**UX Development **\n\nAt Shopify, UX Developers work on building experiences inclusive of everyone regardless of location, language, device, assistive technology, or network speed. Youโ€™ll work across disciplines and are excited about building human-centered experiences. Youโ€™ll work closely with the teams that create compelling content, build awareness of Shopify, and communicate stories about Shopify's role in commerce to a global audience. Or, you might focus on creating thoughtful product interfaces for our users, shape our design language, and contribute to our shared component libraries in a maintainable and scalable way. Our teams primarily work with the latest web standards in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, React, and Ruby on Rails.\n \n**Web Development**\n\nOur Web Developers work closely with software engineering teams, designers and product managers to not only build incredible merchant-facing products, but also developer-facing tools. Youโ€™ll use modern technologies and frameworks like Typescript, React, GraphQL and Apollo to develop large front-end web applications that scale and perform well on all devices. Ruby on Rails is used to add and modify controllers, models, views, and integrating front-end code into a Rails application.\n\n**Youโ€™ll be working on things like:**\n\n* Collaborating with other designers and developers\n* Creating beautiful and fast code that improves our code base in meaningful ways\n* Using test-driven development to write well-tested code\n* Fixing bugs fast and taking your time to solve hard problems well\n* Contributing back to the open source community\n\n**Qualities you likely have to be well suited to this role:**\n\n* Experience using technologies and frameworks like (but not limited to) some of our most-used languages โ€” Ruby on Rails, GraphQL, Java/JEE, Node.js, PHP, Python, React or React Native โ€” is an asset, but not required. Donโ€™t have experience with many of them? No problem โ€” deep experience with any object-oriented language and willingness to learn our tech stack goes a long way. (Also: Check out our StackShare here.)\n* Curiosity and passion to constantly learn new things; Shopify changes fast, and we need the people who work here to be able to change and learn fast too\n* Experience with relational databases and SQL \n\n**Bonus Points**\n\nYouโ€™ve mentored teammates on new ways to deepen their technical craft\n\n#Location\n๐ŸŒ Worldwide

We are Shogun ๐Ÿ‘‹. We help brands take on Amazon with faster and better sites of their own. We have over 15,000 active paying clients and most of them are [happy](https://apps.shopify.com/shogun#reviews).\n\nWe were in the Winter 2018 batch of Y-Combinator, we just raised a Series B investment. You can read more in [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2020/10/07/shogun-raises-35m-to-help-brands-take-on-amazon-with-faster-and-better-sites-of-their-own/).\n\nOur teams are fully distributed and global (check out our [team page](https://getshogun.com/about))! You still don't know if SEO is a science or art (or magic)\n- You can write clean CSS and reusable components. You know you don't need jQuery this decade\n- You have done some Shopify work before and you really dislike liquid\n- You are crazy about optimizations. You only stop optimizing when the only issue on PageSpeed Insights is the ga script. You can talk with other humans. You can explain ARIA to my mother\n\n### Responsibilities\n- Support agencies and customers with [Shogun Frontend](https://getshogun.com/frontend) builds. You will discuss architecture, you will be the technical guru during the implementation. You will celebrate when it is shipped ๐Ÿš€ and you will measure the results closely and with bated breath. \n- You will have to review and improve some shocking code that will make you fall off your chair. You will fight against external scripts. You will be the guardian of best practices\n- Build awesome internal tools that make your life easier and help the team to ship things faster\n- You will be organized and communicate decisions, issues, and lessons learned internally to the squad and externally to agencies and clients. You love a little bit of show and tell.\n\n### Our Values\n- *Work in the open:* Operate with high integrity and choose what's right over what's easy. Be transparent as a company and with each other\n- *People are People:* Treat yourself, colleagues, and customers with dignity, empathy, and respect. ## Your Day-to-day\n\nThis is a hands-on, fully-remote programming position. You'll be working on eCommerce platforms and CMSes like Magento, Shopify and WordPress. The core technologies you'll be working with are PHP, HTML, CSS, and JS.\n\nOur projects are generally focused around making large, material changes to our clients' sites or designing and developing new sites from the ground up. You work closely with client stakeholders, our project managers, and other developers to design, develop and deploy features and updates that *best serve our clients and their customers*.\n\nWe have quite a bit of work booked for the next few months, so an ideal applicant will be ready to hit the ground running. Despite the amount of work we have, I strive to minimize context switchingโ€”if you're on a project, you shouldn't expect to be bombarded with unrelated tweaks on other projects here and there.\n\nWe're a small but quickly growing agency. As one of the early hires, there is opportunity for this to be a high impact position. An appropriately ambitious individual will have huge opportunity to lay the groundwork of the company's future.\n\n## About BranchLabs\n\nBranchLabs is a small but rapidly growing fully remote eCommerce consultancy. We provide eCommerce strategy, design, and implementation services for our clients. Our clients are generally vertically integrated, branded B2C businesses. We help them sell more online, show their brand in the best light, and optimize their backend eCommerce processes.\n\nOur reputation is built on delivering results. We take pride in the work we produce. The products we deliver are high quality inside and out, and they help our clients capitalize on real opportunities. We work closely with stakeholders on our clients' marketing teams, combining their understanding of their customers with our understanding of all things eCommerce. Together, we craft solutions that work for our clients and their customers.\n\n## Some Notes on Culture\n\nHere are some of our values. They're always being refined based on what works and what doesn't.\n\n* We value clear, concise communication.\n* You can only produce high quality work if you have a clear understanding of the problem.\n* Contextโ€”understanding our clients and their customersโ€”empowers individual contributors to find better solutions.\n* Free up time for interesting problems by automating repeatable tasks and learning your tools inside and out.\n* No process for process' sake. No meetings for meetings' sake. But there *is* a place for both.\n* Build or use tools to provide predictability and eliminate boring work.\n* Individual productivity is important to us, and it is hugely dependent on a minimally distracting, supportive environment.\n\n# Responsibilities\n When you start, this is what you can expect to work on.\n\n* Full Magento, Shopify, or WooCommerce site development\n* Design architecture, then implement features for existing eCommerce stores\n* Implement designs in CSS/HTML/JS\n* Configure middleware services like Redis, Memcached, Varnish, Solr, ElasticSearch, etc.\n* Integrate with 3rd party APIs \n\n# Requirements\n## Qualifications\n\nThese are the must haves. Basically: be a web developer!\n\n* 3โ€“5+ years of industry experience\n* Hands-on programming experience with Magento, Shopify or WooCommerce\n* Proficient in HTML, CSS, and JS\n* Git experience\n* Understand the webโ€”REST, HTTP verbs, basic HTTP status codes, etc.\n* Familiarity with the Unix command line\n\n## Ideal Qualifications\n\nIf you fulfill the above *and* have experience with a few of the below, definitely get in touch.\n\n* Hands-on programming experience with all three of the core eCommerce platforms we support\n* Enterprise software development\n* Strong UX/UI chops\n* Deep understanding building complex database queries, particularly MySQL\n* Experience setting up and configuring Apache\n* Opinionated about designโ€”visual and code\n* A portfolio of personal projects (not necessarily code related)\n\n#Location\n๐ŸŒ Worldwide

**Plug in Useful make some of the [most popular SaaS web apps for Shopify](http://https://www.pluginuseful.com/collections/apps). With over 100k users we've followed the rapid growth of Shopify and are looking to add a senior engineer to our 100% remote team of six.**\n\nAs a Senior Software Engineer you'll have worked with React and Rails before and ideally have used the Flux pattern on a decent-sized web app. You can both architect software, building it from the ground up, and maintain existing systems in a thoughtful way.\n\nJust as important is how you approach problems and work in the team. We don't want someone who puts their headphones on for three days and churns out code. Your instinct is to collaborate.\n\nYou'll work closely with our product manager to gather requirements, come up with technical solutions, present these in a clear non-technical way and agree on what to do.\n\nYou'll both mentor and learn from our software engineer through code reviews and working on problems together. And you'll help our QA tester to understand changes, how best to test them and be responsive in fixing bugs.\n\nWe're 100% remote across different timezones so clear, regular communication is key. Your location isn't important as long as there's a roughly 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time.\n\nYou're experienced in working remotely and have found a schedule and setup that works best for you. If that's a coworking space we can pay for that, but that's optional since you decide where you're at your most productive.\n\n### Skills & Experience\n* 1+ years React or similar frontend frameworks\n* 3+ years Rails\n* 5+ years software engineering\n* Have worked on web apps, ideally B2B SaaS\n* Software architecture\n* Have used a few different software patterns\n* Very collaborative\n* Clear non-technical communicator\n* Have worked remotely\n* Curious about new technologies\n* Ideally have worked with Kanban \n\nFull time, 100% remote from any location with a 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time. We believe strongly in work/life balance with reasonable hours (usually 37.5 hours or occasionally more when required) and paid time off. \n\n# Requirements\nApply by sending your CV and a brief email intro to [email protected] We love it when you mention something from the job description.
