Our backend Ruby engineers manage the ingestion and normalization of large data sets from data extraction through to product delivery. We believe in working smarter not harder: much of our backend code is “meta-“ code that parses government specifications and then generates our actual code from that.

WHAT WE WILL EXPECT FROM YOU
You will have ownership of an entire module, including responsibility for:

  • Creating new features in a clean and maintainable way
  • Re-factoring existing code to ensure that we stay agile
  • Reviewing teammates’ code and providing feedback
  • Keeping yourself focused and your projects on track
  • An “I can run through walls” mentality to ensure that goals are met

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US
  • Autonomy to solve problems in the way you best see fit
  • A manager who is accountable for ensuring you meet your professional goals
  • A team who helps each other and always strives to improve
  • The time to focus on creating the right solution, instead of the easiest one

    REQUIREMENTS
  • Professional experience as a software engineer
  • Experience with Ruby or a transferable language
  • A desire for continual self-improvement
  • An understanding of best practices regarding maintainability and scalability
  • Must have US work authorization and be located in the US (we cannot sponsor visas at this time)
  • There are no formal education requirements for this position

    BONUS POINTS
  • Experience with functional programming (e.g. Haskell)
  • Experience with data scraping and parsing

Founded in 2012 by noted database experts, and backed by major venture capital and high-wealth individuals, VividCortex is headquartered in Charlottesville, Virginia with a remote team in Montevideo, Uruguay. With more than 750% year-over-year growth, VividCortex is a company on fire!

About VividCortex

VividCortex is a modern database monitoring platform that gives developers and DBAs deep visibility into the database. Our solution is delivered as software-as-a-service and helps our customers see and analyze the work their databases are doing in great detail. It addresses critical pain points in measuring and managing today's large, distributed, diverse storage tiers composed of multiple different clustered products, all working together.

We have a fast-growing customer base of well-known companies, and a tremendous reputation in our market for delivering a high-quality, innovative solution for database performance problems that are common in tens of thousands of small and large organizations.

About The Role

VividCortex is looking for experienced software engineers with deep knowledge and interest in PostgreSQL to help us build and improve the platform that ingests, secures, and analyzes the massive amounts of performance and other data we measure from our customers' database servers. Our platform is written in Go and hosted on the AWS cloud. It uses Kafka, Redis, and MySQL for data storage and analysis. We are a DevOps organization building a 12-factor microservices application; we practice small, fast cycles of rapid improvement and full exposure to the entire infrastructure, but we don't take anything to extremes.

The position offers excellent benefits, a competitive base salary, an opportunity for equity, and a path to promotion. Diversity is important to us, and we welcome and encourage applicants from all walks of life and all backgrounds.

Responsibilities

  • Discover, define, document, and design selected portions of our infrastructure, whether that's public APIs, internal services, background worker tasks, statistical computations, or the like.
  • Write code, tests, and deployment manifests and artifacts, using CircleCI, Git and GitHub, pull requests, issues, etc. Collaborate with peers on code review and approval.
  • Engage with our product development and sales teams, as well as external stakeholders to advocate for our PostgreSQL product offering.
  • Deploy, observe, and operate the systems you build. Use ChatOps, VividCortex, Ansible, the Unix command line, and other tools to do this.
  • Measure and improve the code and system as it runs in production.
  • Help provide customer support. Help other departments, such as Sales, as needed.
  • Rotate through on-call duty.
  • Continually seek to understand and improve our security posture and practices; security is part of everyone's job here.
  • Continually seek to understand and improve performance, reliability, resilience, scalability, and automation. Our goal is that systems should scale linearly with our customer growth, and the effort of maintaining the systems should scale sub-linearly.
  • Contribute to a culture of blameless learning, responsibility, and accountability.
  • Collaborate as needed; work independently when needed. You must be self-managing. You must be present and online during your team's normal working hours, and attend and participate in team calls and the like.

    Ideal Qualifications

  • Successful candidates are collaborative, self-managing, and experienced in general development, deployment, and operation of modern API-powered web applications using continuous delivery and Git in a Unix/Linux environment.
  • SaaS multitenant experience is a bonus.
  • Experience with enterprise security is a plus.
  • You know PostgreSQL pretty well, and will advocate for it
  • Experience with Go and MySQL is very beneficial.
  • Bash scripting experience is desirable.
  • A 4-year degree from an accredited university.
  • A driver's license.

At VividCortex, we want to build a diverse team because it's the right thing to do, and because we believe diversity is strength. We encourage applicants from all walks of life and all backgrounds.

Note to Agencies and Recruiters: VividCortex has a strict company policy against engaging with unsolicited contact from agencies or recruiters. Unsolicited resumes and leads are property of VividCortex and VividCortex explicitly denies that any information sent to VividCortex can be construed as consideration.

Apply

We are a team of distributed software developers focusing on exciting challenges of voice, video and text: real-time communications. We are Mojo Lingo: Voice Applications that Work Like Magic.

At Mojo Lingo, the focus of everything we do is communications. Communications underlie everything humans do: every new idea that spread, every magnificent cathedral built, every successful revolution happened because the team behind it communicated effectively. Our mission is to bring seamless, contextual, powerful communications to the world.

We seek an experienced Voice & Messaging Engineer to join our team creating these applications. As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and depend on conferencing, instant messaging and screen sharing for collaboration. Your strong problem-solving skills and love for a challenge will be brought to bear delivering ambitious features and vanquishing complex bugs. Each person on our team is empowered to make decisions and enjoys great latitude in choosing the right tools and method for the job, and so will you.

You should have experience developing, deploying, supporting, troubleshooting services that support voice & messaging. Ideally, this will include Voice over IP (such as SIP) and/or Instant Messaging (such as XMPP). You should be familiar with popular open source options, and even better if you know about commercial ones too. You also should not be afraid of pulling out tools like Wireshark and wrangling gigabytes of logfiles.

From the beginning we have been a distributed team, with headquarters in Atlanta, but our team members are located around North America, South America, and Europe. We build tools that enable people to communicate fluidly across a wide range of devices, technologies and physical spaces. We are known as application developers and often use technology like speech recognition, text-to-speech, Voice over IP (telephony and non-telephony), instant messaging/text chat and everything to do with the Web.

If you enjoy delighting people by making computers do unexpected things, all while solving complex, technical challenges in a unique industry, come join us!

As a Site Reliability Engineer at ReactiveOps, your primary goal will be to ensure our client’s applications are available, fast, and secure. Our clients need the best service, support, and products, and we need you to help us deliver.

JOB DESCRIPTION

At ReactiveOps, we offer two main products: DevOps consulting and managed operations. Through DevOps consulting, we write infrastructure automation, migrate to high-availability solutions, and craft Docker/CoreOS microservices architectures for our clients. You’ll work directly with clients to ensure their goals are met through automation, analysis, and infrastructure configuration.

Via managed operations, we act as our client's “outsourced, in-house DevOps team”, on top of AWS and other cloud vendors, as best meets our client’s needs. You’ll manage globally load balanced AWS installations, cross-datacenter replication on different vendors, or within client’s data-centers.

No matter the product, we take a DevOps-centric approach with our clients - we believe that we provide amazing service and our clients get the best value when we work closely together. We integrate task trackers (Pivotal, Trello, Asana), chat (Slack, Hipchat), and source control (github) into our own workflow through careful and clever use of automation, giving our clients the ability to contact us like they would with an internal DevOps team but without an operational burden on us.

You’ll work with virtualization and container technologies like Docker, CoreOS, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Vagrant, and Ansible. You will setup and automate high availability data clusters (MySQL Galera, PostgreSQL replication, Redis cluster, ElasticSearch clustering, Memcached, MongoDB etc.), application instances for technologies like Ruby-on-Rails, Django, Node, and Scala (to name a few). You'll engineer management, orchestration, monitoring, and alerting for fleets of instances. If you’ve ever wanted to work at a scale that few companies do, you’ll find the right challenge here at ReactiveOps!

We all work from home and have a “Remote First” culture. We are a Results-Only Work Environment, have a transparent and public technical ladder, minimum vacation policy and unlimited time off, and require healthy work-life balance. We pay 100% of individual and family health insurance premiums, participate in 401k match and have been bootstrapped and profitable since our founding. All employees participate in quarterly profit sharing, and we all get together for periodic all-expenses-paid retreats.

We're hiring across experience bands from mid to senior levels.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform DevOps-focused consulting work for diverse clients
  • Create and maintain system architecture, design, and automation
  • Pair with other SRE/SAs, mentor junior staff
  • Release and maintain open-source software and projects
  • Author blog posts and participate in the community by going to meetups, conferences, etc. as a ReactiveOps representative
  • Manage availability and performance problems for clients; automate resolution to prevent re-occurrence

Who we are

With LaterPay, we want to change the way people buy and sell digital content on the Internet. Why? Because we believe paying for digital content should be fast, convenient, and fair. And because we think you should be able to buy the exact piece of content you want.

We want to create a great software product which influences and changes the way people use paid content of any kind on the Internet. The usage of paid content should be as easy and convenient as going out to dinner: you are served first and pay later. We want to build a user-centric product that makes users feel smart. It should represent the simplest, most secure way to buy digital goods. We want to change the way people regard paid content, turning it into a great experience. We want to enable businesses to offer "paid content as a service", convincing users of their content's value instead of forcing them to pay before actually getting the content.

We want to create an environment of excellence in which performance meets comfort and fun. We have an office, located in the center of Munich next to the Isar River, but around half of the company works remotely, meeting up together every few months.

About You

After joining the ops team at LaterPay, you will often work independently to help take our current automated infrastructure to the cloud. Your responsibilities would involve a very proactive approach to successfully planning, building and maintaining our platform into the future.

Here at LaterPay we believe that work is about doing something you enjoy and that it should be self motivating. This is a hands-on position where you will lead by example, oversee project and architecture decisions and help others build the next big thing.

You will implement best practises in security, manage operations and implement seamless upgrades with the team.

What we have

We're primarily built around Python/Django, deployed as RPMs by Jenkins to a handful of CentOS boxen in a local datacentre, configured with Puppet.

We've got PostgreSQL, we've got Redis, we've got a Cassandra cluster.

Right now, we're looking at moving that to AWS.

We'll want you to help with that.

Slack, JIRA, and GitHub are our working tools.

Icinga, Graphite and ELK help us know what's going on.

Things we're particularly looking for

  • Demonstrated previous responsibility for maintaining high-availability systems
  • Experience using Puppet, especially around testing and deployment
  • Experience with AWS - particularly Elastic Beanstalk, DynamoDB and VPCs and related services
  • Familiarity with the "Twelve-Factor App" principles (http://12factor.net/)
  • A penchant for multitasking when needed
  • Capacity and forecast planning
  • Experience in ensuring PCI-DSS compliance

DESCRIPTION

Who we are:

We’re in the business of delivering awesome meals to your home.
We build and run a superb website, suite of mobile apps, and a fleet of drivers, all so you can order from real restaurants, to your doorstep.

We work with hundreds of the UK's best loved restaurants (Carluccio's, GBK, Nando's, Rossopomodoro, many top quality independents) to deliver their meals to homes and offices everywhere. Our customers are as passionate about great food as we are — and we satisfy them in just 32 minutes on average!

What we do:

As a logistics company, our software is used to transport physical goods and solve real-world problems. We handle rapid decisions about dispatching drivers in real-time and remove slow human think-time and inefficient information discovery from every interchange point in the order processing workflow so food deliveries can be fulfilled as quickly as possibly. Our current total order fulfillment time from the time that the customer submits an order until they receive their meal is, on average, 32 minutes, although we know we can do better.

You:

Our product team needs to grow, quickly: our breackneck-paced growth comes with many challenges, from our dispatch backend to excellence in front-end UX, and from software architecture to highly usable mobile applications.

We're uncompromising though: we're like smart, ambitious software engineers, designers, and product managers to join us, and help us build and scale this lovable (and loved!) product.

We are looking for like-minded developers who truly love the craft of software engineering. We value a job well done rather than unreasonably long hours. We encourage engineer to be curious, put time into studying software development (learn new languages, study design patterns or algorithms, experiment with new open source frameworks, etc) and to continue to develop new skills.

As a Software Engineer (backend) on our team, you will:

  • Work with great product people, like Greg (our CTO), Simon (Head of design), Marty (full-stack engineer), or Julien (backend engineer).
  • Be exposed to the whole business, in an environment where your ideas counts.
  • Work with teams from the entire company to design and deliver features for a rapidly growing suite of products
  • Design, build, ship and maintain software features across one or more parts of our stack — from operations, backend, and APIs to highly interactive front-ends and mission-critical mobile applications.
  • Contribute to a learning organisation: you'll help defining how we work together, and how we build a great product.
  • Report to the CTO.

    REQUIREMENTS

  • Pride in readable, well-designed, well-tested software.
  • Professional experience with Ruby and Ruby on Rails (2+ years)
  • We'll still consider you if you have done some Ruby on the side, and have worked with similar environment (Python/Django, Perl/Catalyst, PHP/Laravel, Groovy/Grails).
  • Experience with relational databases (PostGreSQL, MySQL) and key-value stores (Memcache, Redis)
  • A relentless desire to satisfy every customer's palate.
  • A sense of humour.
  • A stash of Kangaroo GIFs (Cat GIFs tolerated).

    Nice-to-haves:

  • Experience with PostGIS, or any geography-heavy applications.
  • Experience with "NoSQL" data backends (Redis, MongoDB, ElasticSearch).
  • Experience with Go.
  • Experience with logistics.

    BENEFITS

  • Work where you want.
  • As long as you have a great internet connection, and you're happy to come see us regularly of course!
  • Top-notch kit. Bring your own or we'll get you a shiny new Macbook and stuff.
  • Eat great food.
    • If you're remote, that's a good reason to come to the office regularly!
    • If not, watch that waistline ^_^
  • Tech and food events with the team.
  • Gym membership (if in London). Probably important in a food company.

2yr

Apply

We'd like you to join our development team and help us build scalable, reliable services that will make customers and residents happy.

As a backend engineer, you'll help design and implement our cloud architecture, to keep ReCollect services available and resilient to problems. You'll explore some of the latest technologies, you'll share your experiences and wisdom building highly available systems, and you'll get your hands dirty as we migrate existing systems and build new systems.

As a systems engineer, you'll have great peers to work with - folks who will understand the challenges we face and will help you grow and get where we need to be. Our development team is geographically distributed, and has many, many years of telecommute experience and working on drama-free, highly productive teams.

This listing is for a full-time position, based out of Vancouver, BC or working remotely from anywhere in North America.

What we are looking for:

The right person for this job will be experienced designing, building and operating internet-scale web systems. You'll have hard won lessons and experience working with a variety of technologies such as Docker, Solr, ZooKeeper, Kafka, PostgreSQL, Nginx and HAProxy.

You'll be a polyglot - someone comfortable in several languages - who is comfortable hacking out some bash glue, or updating our backend API codes. You won't be scared off by the need to explore a large code base to fix bugs and understand system dependencies.

You'll have experience working on an entirely distributed team. You'll understand how to keep yourself productive, happy and healthy while working from your home-office or co-working space. Your written communication will be strong, and you know how to make the best use of your tools on a distributed team. When we get together a couple times a year for all-hands face-to-face, you'll value the time with your awesome peers!

You'll have a lot to share and teach, and also a desire to learn and grow. We are all about learning and getting smarter as we build ReCollect! By the end of your (hopefully long) career at ReCollect, you will be happy, healthy and have lots of new lessons and learnings to share.

You must be prepared for hard work with our small team, as we continue to explore new markets and customer segments. You will need to be comfortable with ambiguity and making decisions to keep our future options as open as possible. You should also be prepared to occasionally carry the weight for others and take on tasks outside of your typical responsibilities when needed.

We will support you with:

A stable and drama-free development process and team. (Regular blame-free retrospectives, little-a agile, kanban)
A clear vision of where we want and need to get to. (Stable strategic priorities, no giant swings in the idea du jour)
Documentation on how existing systems work. (Confluence, Google Docs, code commenting. Not perfect but always improving)
A modest but growing test automation system. (Unit & integration testing, lots of Selenium expeirence on the team)
Excellent communication & dev tools. (Slack, Github, Pivotal Tracker, ScreenHero, Join.me, Hangouts, GNU Screen, Sauce Labs, ...)
Peers with many years of development experience.

You will have experience with these or similar technologies:

  • Docker
  • Ansible
  • Dynamic languages (Javascript, CoffeeScript, Perl, Bash)
  • PostgreSQL, Nginx, HAProxy
  • Systems Administration & Security
  • Restful HTTP APIs (building & using)

    And will have:

  • Strong written communication skills
  • A sense of humor with our team and clients
  • Desire to achive our engineering goals
  • An interest in the future of civic technology.

Our customers are mostly local government organizations, and you'll get to interact with them and help provide the legendary customer service that we have become known for.

Most importantly, we want you to be bright and fun. We also want you to care about a greener planet, happy citizens, and more efficient governments.

If this sounds like a good fit for your skills, and you are up for a challenge in the civic technology space... please contact us and tell us why you are uniquely qualified to join our team.

We are looking for someone who loves cyber security, machine learning, and big data, and at the same time appreciates a polished product with beautiful UI and developer-friendly API:s.

You will be building models for verifying users based on their browsing behavior, mouse movements, keystroke dynamics, location changes and device properties – i.e. primarily unsupervised learning and anomaly detection. One of the major challenges is to follow users between desktop and mobile devices, as well as distinguishing between two individuals even though they're using the same device.

You will also be responsible for architecting our streaming machine learning platform using open-source tools such as Spark, Kafka, Hadoop, Cassandra, etc.

The rest of the product is built primarily in Ruby, Rails, and JavaScript with AngularJS for the client dashboard. We use several storage technologies, including PostgreSQL and Redis. We deploy our Unicorns with Ansible to AWS, manage source and issues on GitHub and plan our daily tasks in Trello. Most importantly we post images of what we have for lunch in #watercooler on Slack. We all work on MacBooks (though most of us come from a Linux background).

Experience with information security or fraud prevention is a big plus.

Work environment

  • We have no specific business hours, nor do we track number of hours worked. We don’t fiddle with sick leave or fixed vacation days. Employees are judged entirely on the results they produce and otherwise are free to work whenever they see fit.
  • We work from home, or coffee shops, or co-working spaces, or (hypothetically) a swimming pool in Brazil
  • We default to transparency and honesty. You will have deep visibility into how decisions are made and the financial status of the company.

    Product

Castle uses state-of-the-art machine learning to protect web and mobile apps from user account fraud. Users are profiled based on their typing patterns, mouse movements, device characteristics, browsing patterns, and hundreds of other signals. When something suspicious occurs, both the administrator and the user are alerted and can immediately take appropriate action, such as locking the account or having to go through additional verification.

    Why us?

Every line of code that you write will have a great impact. Every suggestion you make that can make our product perform better (ms, ROC, UX or $) has the potential to take the company a huge step forward. You will make a difference!

We're still a small company staying under the radar. Our vision is to transform the security industry in a way similar to how Stripe revolutionized payments – replacing the traditional sales-driven process with a five minute JavaScript snippet.

When it comes to company culture, building a diverse and inclusive team is at the heart of Castle. We look for voices unlike our own because they help us learn and expand our perspective. It's depressing to see inequality and exclusion as the defaults of the security industry. Without intentional effort, we will inherit those failings and worsen the problem.

We are seeking an experienced Web Front End Developer to join our team creating these applications. As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and depend on instant messaging and screen sharing for collaboration. In particular, we’re looking for someone who is a strong problem-solver and relishes a challenge in wrangling ambitious features and vanquishing complex bugs. Each person on our team is empowered to make decisions and enjoys great latitude in choosing the right tools and method for the job.

When we say “Front End” we are primarily looking for someone who can use the great power of JavaScript and Ruby on Rails to create interactive and ultimately usable web applications. The skills we think you’ll need the most are JavaScript (experience with frameworks like React, Angular, Ember or similar is required, but we’re looking for someone who is flexible), as well as experience delivering applications with Ruby on Rails. Obviously you should also be strong with HTML and CSS. If you’re not a great designer, not to worry. We’re more concerned about someone who can deliver the function over the form.

Summary Requirements

Groupon’s Points team is designing a customer loyalty program which rewards our best customers for their continued patronage.

Working (remotely) as part of a small agile team of 3, you’ll help deliver the next iteration of our points loyalty platform. You will work on the web applications and services that provide points information to the user and other internal web applications within Groupon. We work full-stack so you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to each component and realize new features end-to-end. We work remotely using HipChat and Cisco teleconferencing to stay in touch constantly.

Our services are written in Clojure with a PostgreSQL database and our “front end” (the term is used loosely here) is served using Node.js – more than 80% of our work is on the Clojure side. We’re OK with bringing you up to speed on Clojure, especially if this is exciting to you: say you’ve been using Java for a long time and eyeing it, or say you’ve written a whole bunch of custom emacs lisp and it was fun, or say you just learn a lot of languages.

We often remote pair, although we’re keeping the number of developers at an odd number for now, so we’re looking for someone who can communicate while coding, especially if you can say, “I have no idea what you just meant,” and who can also tackle a pull request on their own (after we get you up to speed on our system, of course).

It would be nice, but not required, to see you bring to the team your experience designing very high throughput transactional systems (50k writes per minute). Or how to better distribute workload among our VMs. Or interesting techniques for testing and deploying seamlessly. Or some interesting math to alleviate false positives in our monitoring system. Or some kind of algorithm that …?

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years experience developing in JavaScript, Ruby, Java, or Clojure.
  • Strong Computer Science fundamentals
  • A passion for continuous improvement and exploring new technologies.
  • Proven track record of delivering results, especially in the area of writing high-performance, reliable and maintainable code.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with scripting languages such as Ruby, Perl or Python and tools such as GitHub, Unix, etc.
  • Experience and understanding of relational databases such as PostgreSQL.
  • BS/MS in Computer Science
  • Knowledge of large-scale applications, and asynchronous architectures.
  • Creative problem-solving skills.

Culturally, we believe that great people make great companies and that starting with the customer and working backward moves us forward. Community matters to us on an internal, local and global scale—it’s fundamental to our company’s growth and to the well-being of the world at large. We also value self-awareness, candor, lunch and WiFi. If we match with you, please apply to join us.

DESCRIPTION

Let’s just cut right to the chase. This job is for you if

  • you’re passionate about the idea of helping churches solve ministry problems through data and intelligence in a way that truly impacts the lives of the people they (we!) serve;
  • solving these ministry problems with JavaScript (browser and Node.js), Elasticsearch, and Redis in a distributed, service-oriented architecture is firmly in your wheelhouse;
  • you thrive working remotely (if not, we also have an office in San Diego).

Is your head nodding in agreement as you’re reading this? Please, keep reading!

    What We’re Building

Here at MonkDev, we’ve spent nearly ten years building Ekklesia 360 into a platform that’s now used by thousands of churches across the globe. It’s likely that you’ve visited a church website powered by us, such as The Village Church or Eagle Brook Church.

As you can imagine, this provides us with access to a lot of data. But it’s data that churches have no idea how to interpret and apply. In fact, most churches still rely on giving and attendance numbers to make ministry decisions. Not that those are necessarily bad metrics, but consider how rudimentary they are compared to the tools available to sales/marketing or even us in the product/engineering world.

We want to change that. By tapping into the data to provide intelligent, actionable metrics, we believe we can truly help churches make better ministry decisions.

So, that’s what we’ve begun building, and we need your help to further the vision!

    REQUIREMENTS

  • A passion for helping the church and its members. All of us at MonkDev feel incredibly blessed to serve a market we care so deeply about and get to nerd out with code and technology. It’s a special combination that’s not easily found. Be sure to read more about us and see our lovely faces.
  • Real-world experience shipping stuff using JavaScript (browser and Node.js), Elasticsearch, and Redis in a distributed, service-oriented architecture. We’re a very small team, so chances are you’ll touch just about everything up-and-down our stack. To be clear though, it’s heavier server-side than front-end. This is not a job for strictly front-end JavaScript developers.
  • Curiosity and drive to be learning continuously. We’re looking for pretty specific skills here and now (the ones listed above), but that doesn’t mean they’ll always be the right tools for the job. Maybe we’ll decide that Elixir or InfluxDB is better suited for the problem down the road. The only way we’ll know is by staying curious.
  • The ability to collaborate and communicate in a remote environment. While part of the team is centralized in San Diego, a number of us are scattered throughout the US working from homes, coffee shops, and co-working spaces. Slack and Google Hangout are our dear friends.
  • Care for writing simple, clean, and beautiful code. Code is craft. However you like to word it, we’re looking for excellence and attention to detail. Yet, it’s balanced with a desire to ship early and often, and not two years later when every line is perfect and fully tested. (It’s a hard balance, don’t get us perfectionists wrong.)
  • An eye and appreciation for good design and user experience. We want to build a product that delights, and we believe that starts within the culture of the Engineering team.
  • BONUS: Experience with PHP, Ruby/Rails, and MySQL/PostgreSQL. We use these in other parts of Ekklesia 360, so it only helps us as a team if you can jump in and get familiar quickly.

    BENEFITS

  • Competitive salary
  • Health, dental, vision and life insurance
  • 401(k) matching options
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA/Section 125)
  • Premium Only Plan for pre-tax deduction of eligible benefits
  • Comprehensive employee assistance program (counseling and advice on legal, financial, and personal matters)

Front End Designer Developer

UpHex

2yr

Apply

UpHex is a tiny, nascent SaaS company that helps marketing agencies monitor analytics for their clients.

We're completely bootstrapped with a current runway of about 18 months, though we plan to seek seed funding at some point. In August 2014 we also won a $50,000 grant from the state of Virginia's Commonwealth Research and Commercialization Fund. We don't yet charge our users anything during this trial phase, but we'd like to do so (very) soon.

We're currently in the middle of a pilot with a few hundred brave customers. In total, they're sending us about 1,250,000 data points per day across a number of connected Twitter, Shopify, Facebook, and Google Analytics accounts. At the moment, we can effectively use only a fraction of that data. We need to make the interface we expose to users more usable before we can do some of the things we want to do.

That's where you come in.

About the role

We're looking for a front-end designer to help us build this platform. We're looking for someone who has a passion for software development, loves making things work well, and who thrives in a high-impact, low-ceremony startup environment.

In general, you would be responsible for:

designing and building component-based, reusable, modular designs for web, mobile, and e-mail user-agents
constructing new components and helping us solve difficult design problems
presenting information in a clear, effective, and straightforward way
writing SCSS, Haml, and very occasionally JavaScript
The initial project is to redesign our prototype administrative backend and to develop a design vocabulary of components we can use in other contexts on our site. From there, we'd like to work further with you on a number of other projects -- designing new interfaces for features we want to build, implementing ways of showing large amounts of relevant information, and others in the pipeline.

This is a contract position that pays US$450 per day. Generally we'd expect you to work 2-3 weekdays per week and to have some time overlap with US ET (UTC-4/-5), but we otherwise care much more about the results you deliver than the hours you spend. We prefer that people work when they want to, not when a clock tells them to, so you don't need to keep track of your time other than to tell us how many days you worked in a particular week.

Our technology

We generally place a high premium on architectural and code simplicity, and try to minimize complexity at all levels.

Our styles are a small custom theme built on top of Bootstrap 3 and Flatty, written in SCSS; the pages are in Haml and pipelines to HTML.

We run a Padrino stack on Cloud66 and DigitalOcean. ActiveRecord 4 is used for the small number of models that interact with the database directly. The datastore is Postgresql 9.3; we also use Redis to store jobs for Resque.

The architecture is likewise fairly simple: there's one load balancer, two web servers, one process server, and one Postgresql database. Our codebase is small right now, clocking in at around 1,500 lines including all models, controllers, and services.

You can run all the tests (RSpec and Rubocop) with a single command, and you can deploy to production or any other environment with a single command.

About you

You:

  • are comfortable working with a remote team
  • are comfortable using tools like Google Hangout and Flowdock to collaborate with teammates
  • enjoy one of XKCD, SMBC, Model View Culture, or PBF
  • are a fan of DRY, STTCPW, and YAGNI

Your technical experience includes most or all of the following:

  • proficiency with SCSS, Haml, CSS3, and JavaScript
  • fluency and experience with writing modular, composable, reusable (S)CSS
  • ability to leverage your design experience in the context of an information-heavy application
  • constructing interactive components, controls, or interface elements
  • you understand and can use git to make commits on topic branches

    Bonus points if:

  • you can point to public commits you've made on a project you like
  • you have written an interesting technical blog post, essay, rant, etc. that you can link to
  • you have worked at a startup before

    How to apply

If you think you'd be a good fit, we'd love to hear from you! (Please, no recruiters or agencies -- individuals only.) To apply, send an e-mail to tech-team+github@uphex.com that includes the following info:

  • the URLs for two companies or projects that you've previously worked on, along with a short description of what you did there and when
  • the URL of the most interesting thing you've read, listened to, or watched lately, along with a short description of why it's interesting to you
  • the URL of a commit that you made to a public project, or a commit that you think is particularly interesting

Please also include at least two of:

  • any public web presence (blog, portfolio site, Dribbble profile, et cetera)
  • your GitHub or Bitbucket account URL
  • your StackOverflow user profile URL
  • your LinkedIn profile URL
  • your Twitter handle

    Please don't send a resume. We're not hiring a PDF -- we're hiring you!

We promise to be in touch within one business day. If you have any questions, we invite you to talk directly to John Feminella, our CTO. His e-mail is @uphex.com (but use tech-team+github@uphex.com once you're ready to apply).

We look forward to hearing from you!

Loco2 (http://loco2.com/) is an independent online agent for rail tickets in Europe. Our mission is to make booking a train as simple as booking a flight. We're integrated with the booking systems of major rail operators, and our ticket coverage is unrivalled and growing.

About us

We're a small team of passionate people. Our technical director is former Rails core team member Jon Leighton. Meet the rest of the Loco2 family at http://loco2.com/about/team/.

Our customers are at the centre of what we do, and we're proud to have an average rating of 9.2 out of 10 (https://www.trustpilot.co.uk/review/loco2.com).

We're growing quickly, and most of this growth is organic, as customers spread the word about the great experience they've had booking tickets with us.

We have an office in London, but our technical team works remotely and with flexible hours. Everyone in the company uses online tools like Hipchat, Trello, Github and Basecamp to work together.

We are not a VC-backed startup and we don't think caffeine-fuelled all-nighters are a very good way to grow a company that is built to last. We're driven to delight our customers, but we have lives outside of work too.

Technical challenges

Our software stack consists of a modern Rails application, a PostgreSQL database and a pure-Ruby backend library which we use to communicate with train booking APIs.

We're currently integrated with 6 different European rail booking systems, which is how we achieve our very wide coverage. But it also means that we need to diligently manage technical complexity, as each system works in a slightly different way, with its own features and quirks. SOAP is (unfortunately) used by many APIs, which is why we released our open source library, LolSoap (https://github.com/loco2/lolsoap).

Some of the most difficult challenges we face relate to routing and making sense of lots of data. Which routes are best to get from A to B? Which booking systems should be queried? How might we cache data without affecting accuracy of results?

As well as improving and perfecting our product, we also need to scale the business as our sales continue to grow. This involves making sure that performance is optimised and customer problems are minimised.

About you

We're looking for new engineers to join the team. An ideal candidate:

  • Has 4+ years of programming experience
  • Knows Ruby or another similar language
  • Is comfortable designing object oriented software from scratch, not just implementing CRUD Rails apps; a pragmatist who can see the trade-offs involved in the different approaches to solving a problem
  • Thinks independently and critically, striving to discover the root causes of problems rather than treating the symptoms
  • Actively considers future maintainability when deciding how to implement something
  • Communicates very well using written English
  • Learns quickly and independently, but doesn't hesitate to ask for help when needed
  • Enjoys getting their teeth stuck into complicated problems, as well as being willing to pitch in on some of the more routine tasks which inevitably arise
  • Can be on call from time-to-time during some weekends, in case we need to respond to an emergency problem
  • Can work hours that have some overlap with London daytime
  • Is motivated by Loco2's mission

We are a team of distributed software developers focusing on exciting challenges of voice, video and text: real-time communications. We are Mojo Lingo: Voice Applications that Work Like Magic.

At Mojo Lingo, the focus of everything we do is communications. Communications underlie everything humans do: every new idea that spread, every magnificent cathedral built, every successful revolution happened because the team behind it communicated effectively. Our mission is to bring seamless, contextual, powerful communications to the world.

We are seeking an experienced Full Stack Ruby developer to join our team creating these applications. As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and will be required to work independently. In particular, we’re looking for someone who is a strong problem-solver and relishes a challenge in combating ambitious features and complex bugs. Each person on our team is empowered to make decisions and enjoys great latitude in choosing the right tools and method for the job.

What does “Full Stack” mean to us? When we deliver an application, we don’t just throw it over the wall. We think about how our customer will deploy the application and make sure we give them something they can run. That means we are looking for help not only writing the software, but also figuring out how to package it and how to troubleshoot and manage it in production. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable digging into operational issues and finding ways to make everything work that much more smoothly.

From the beginning we have been a distributed team, with headquarters in Atlanta, but our team members are located around the United States, South America, and Europe.

Summary Requirements

Must Haves - Soft Skills:

  • Curiosity and aptitude for learning complex systems
  • Excellent communication skills - since this is remote work, strong communication by phone/IM/email is critical
  • A commitment to deliver quality work on time
  • Mid-level developer with history of successful projects

    Must Haves - Technical Skills:

  • 2-5 years Ruby experience
  • Experience developing web applications with Rails
  • Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals
  • Experience troubleshooting Linux Operating System issues
  • Familiarity with network tracing tools like Wireshark

    Nice-to-Have - Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with Voice over IP, especially any of Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, SIP, Telephony, etc
  • Experience with WebRTC
  • Experience with XMPP or other instant messaging systems
  • Basic skills with HTML, CSS & Javascript, but no design skills required
  • Knowledge of programming languages other than Ruby, such as C, Java, Javascript, Go, Erlang/Elixir, etc. We’re looking for someone with a capacity to learn.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive development of important, customer-facing projects
  • Work on stories as described in our agile project management tool (Pivotal Tracker or Atlassian JIRA)
  • Join our daily standup calls to report status to the team
  • Take feedback from testers and users to identify and resolve application problems
  • Make recommendations on additional features or functionality
  • Diagnose failures in staging and production environments, understand the underlying issues, and resolve them
  • Maintain knowledge of Ruby developer tools and best practices
  • Communicate with clients to understand requirements and report regularly on progress
  • Be self-sufficient delivering assigned tasks - we work as a team, but we expect the members of that team to pull their own weight and contribute independently

    Technology

This is some of the technology we use on projects with our clients. Not every project uses every technology, but we get to apply a diverse range of technology to solve the problems.

  • Version control: Git
  • Web backend: Rails
  • Web frontend: jQuery, Bootstrap
  • Asynchronous workers: Resque, Sidekiq
  • Development project management: Pivotal Tracker
  • Database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, LDAP

    Education and Experience

  • 2-5 years of relevant industry experience, majority with Ruby
  • Proven track record of delivering projects
  • Experience working on small teams preferred

    Location

Live wherever you like! This is a remote position. Of course, if you happen to be in the Atlanta area, you’re welcome to work out of our offices downtown. If you’re not in Atlanta, please be within 5 hours of US Eastern Timezone.

TL/DR: We are a distributed team of 5 building an incredible SaaS platform that helps companies make their people happy. We are in stealth, have done this before and are launching our beta soon - so this is an “all-in” role. If you’re looking for a cushy “9-5” job, please keep looking, but if you want to change the world and help make 1,000,000 people happier at work while being part of an amazing team and learning a lot along the way, please keep reading...

Who we are

We are currently in stealth mode, but right now we can tell you that:

  • Our mission is to make 1,000,000 people quantifiably happier at work
  • Our founder has previously built 3 successful companies and raised $100M
  • We are well funded and focused on an industry that’s ripe for disruption
  • We are looking for the best talent, regardless of where you are
  • We are a small team of 5 working ridiculously hard to realize our vision

We will of course tell you more if you apply for the position and if we feel you’re a good fit. Because we’re in stealth mode, we simply want to limit the amount of information we put out publicly right now. Thanks for understanding.

    What we’re building

A beautiful, simple SaaS platform that helps fast-growing companies dramatically improve their culture and retain their best people as they scale.

    Who you are

If these words describe you, then please keep reading:

  • Entrepreneurial
  • Results-driven
  • Reliable
  • Passionate
  • Committed
  • Resourceful
  • Life-long learner

You love building things and you’re a hardcore technologist - but you’re not arrogant or set in your ways. You know when it’s time to whiteboard ideas but you also know how to avoid analysis paralysis and build great software.

You make technical decisions that take into account today’s considerations (ship early and often) but you also think a few years down the track. Sure, 100 people might use that feature today, but how will it perform when there are 1,000,000 users in 3 years? You know the delicate balance between over-engineering and under-planning.

    What you’ve done

You’ve done a good amount of freelancing or remote work in the past, so you’re used to using tools like Slack and Google Hangouts to keep in constant communication with your team - whether they’re in the same city or on the other side of the world.

You can work as part of a small team or on your own, but you’re an excellent written and verbal communicator. You probably have your own personal blog and/or regularly contribute to Medium or Quora to help others. You’re always learning and have a thirst for knowledge.

Because you’ve worked at fast-growing startups before, you’re comfortable wearing multiple hats and switching between them regularly - sometimes hourly. Nothing is too much effort for you and you like getting in and rolling up your sleeves to solve a problem. If you need to learn a new technology or skill, no problem - you’ll get it done.

You’ve worked on both small and large projects in the past and love building software. You’re also extremely proficient working with:

  • Ruby on Rails
  • Sass, Haml, CoffeeScript
  • AWS, Rackspace, Fastly
  • PostgreSQL
  • Solr

Ideally, you also have one or more of these skills:

  • Experience designing service-oriented architectures
  • Web operations or system administration experience
  • Strong front-end development skills

    How you see the world

In past roles, you’ve worked directly with customers to help understand their needs and translate a product spec into functional, production ready code. You’re mature enough to know that being a senior engineer is about much more than writing code and you think about architecture, scalability, performance, design implications and most importantly - the customer - with every decision you make.

You care deeply about your legacy. Code quality is extremely important to you and as such you pay close attention to detail. Anything pushed into production by you is known to be polished and well thought out - and you take pride in that. You’re a craftsman (or woman) and see code as the tool you use to create software that people love.

Finally, when asked what you’re best at, “learning” would top the list. You know that technologies come and go and understand that a continual commitment to learning is really the only thing that matters.

    In regards to experience, you:

  • Have 3-5 years of experience as a senior engineer with a good chunk of that time spent at fast-growing startups
  • Are used to working with RoR and have advanced experience building RESTful web services & APIs
  • Have strong experience working with multiple languages and can speak to the pros and cons of each
  • Are not a jerk and don’t have an ego - you respect people and go out of your way to be helpful
  • Have led teams in previous roles and are comfortable hiring and interviewing other engineers
  • Have passions or hobbies outside of work - you understand the need for balance

    Where you are

At home, at your local coffee shop or living life as a digital nomad. You are wherever you want to be and wherever makes you happy. We are a fully distributed team.

    Things you might do

  • Build and ship features independently, with fast release cycles (every week)
  • Fix bugs ranging from small logic changes to more complex issues involving complex SQL queries
  • Enhance and extend our SaaS architecture to support rapid growth in number of customers
  • Reply to support inquiries not because you feel you have to, but because you want to understand customers better
  • Work with other engineers and product designers to brainstorm and test new ideas
  • Help onboard new engineers and show them the ropes
  • Drive to continuously maintain high product quality and improve the process

    Benefits and perks

  • Highly competitive salary
  • Stock options
  • Premium health coverage
  • Work from wherever makes you happy
  • Reimbursement for a desk in a co-working space if required
  • Choose the hours you work (4+ hours overlap with U.S. required)
  • Macbook Air
  • Unlimited books from Amazon
  • Unlimited Starbucks card
  • Membership at your favorite health club
  • 2 international trips per year for team events (2 weeks total travel)

A BIT ABOUT SMARTCARE

We’re on our way to redefining an industry — one that was left for dead.

What do Stanford, Harvard, Yale, University of Miami, Duke, University of Michigan, Baylor, Costco, Sam’s Club and (soon to be) Walgreens all have in common?

They run hearing aid centers.

A hearing aid center is a place where those who suffer from hearing loss can be tested, counseled and hopefully fit with a pair of hearing aids.

At Smartcare, we’re building a software that will transform how hearing aid centers all over the world operate and deliver patient care. We’ve spent over a year creating a product that’s beautiful, functional and above all, something people want.

We’re two months out from shipping the app and couldn't be more optimistic about the future.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

An awesome Senior Ruby on Engineer who feels at home in Ruby on Rails, PostgreSQL, ActiveAdmin, Chef and AWS. You must be very comfortable writing tests (we use Rspec), and be the type of person who wouldn't dream of shipping a feature without writing a suite of tests. You don’t have to be an expert in all of this, but you do need to demonstrate the interest, drive and desire to keep learning and improving.

You’ll also need to:

  • Have a passion for craftsmanship and elegantly designed apps.
  • Be proactive, not reactive.
  • Write well and communicate clearly.
  • Work closely with our team of engineers and designers.
  • Be a “no-ego” doer.

    A BIT ABOUT OUR TEAM

We have a small team of truly kind people – the type we think you’ll want to work with. We have a few engineers, a designer, a writer, a hearing center owner/practitioner and a sales and marketing guy. Our main office is located in St.George, Utah, but most of our team works remotely.

When you come work with Smartcare you’re not employee #80, you’re team member number six. Your impact will be felt.

WORKING WITH US - THE PERKS

  • Live where you want. Live and work from wherever makes you the happiest (and the most productive). If that place just happens to be our office, great we’ve got room for you. If not, that’s fine too. We place far more value on what you get done, not where.
  • No crazy hours. We rarely work more than 40 hours per week. There’s of course the occasional crunch time when more hours are required, but most make sure to take extra time off to balance it out. We fully believe in having a life outside of work.
  • Take a vacation(s). We want you to, in fact, we have a minimum vacation policy of three weeks per year (plus two extra weeks for Christmas break). It’s important to get out and do something, just send the team a picture.
  • Build a culture. The exciting thing (we think) is that you won’t just be building an app, you’ll also play a role in building this company. Our hope is that you’ll want to help shape the culture of Smartcare by your involvement in choosing future team members, company vacation spots and what to include in a new office build out.
  • Make money, have ownership. The starting salary for this role is $70-90k (based on cost of living and experience). We’re also entrusting our first string of team members with part ownership of the company.

Unit: Centre for Gene Regulation and Expression

Job Reference: LS0587

Closing Date: Friday, May 22, 2015

Salary: Grade 8 (£38,511-£45,954)

Are you a great developer with a knack for making great software and changing your users’ lives? Looking for a great team working on fantastic software used by 1000’s of scientists worldwide?

The Open Microscopy Environment (OME) is seeking Software and Devops Engineers to build an international image repository and data-processing tools for the life sciences. We already have lots of great functionality, now we need to scale this up to handle millions of images and petabytes of data across multiple hosts, together with real-time analysis tools, all integrated with other world-leading databases and scientific resources-- Ensembl, etc.

We work hard, have a great time, and deliver unique, world-leading applications that are changing the way bioscience works. Everything we do is open-source; our tools are playing a vital role in supporting the move towards open-data and open-science. We work in several different domains—from basic research to drug screening to education to publication--and we need your help!

Our current stack includes Java, Python, JavaScript, PostgreSQL, ZeroC’s ICE and SciPy, with a touch of NoSQL. Maintaining the security and integrity of our users’ data is critical, and we embrace modern continuous integration and testing practices. Think you have the technical skills to help us perfect our applications?

We value collaboration, and thrive on creativity and well-designed code. We passionately follow open source development and licensing, and use a Kanban-style work pattern to deliver the goods. For more information, see http://openmicroscopy.org.

We are hiring a wide range of people including software engineers, sysadmins, devops, HPC specialists, and data curators. Successful applicants will interact closely with scientists and software developers based in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and the USA.

No one on our team does only one thing. Technical skills are important, but a willingness to take the initiative to research and suggest new tools is critical- we’ll give you the time and support to learn and extend your skills.

Interested? Send us the goods: Your GitHub profile, apps you have created, teams you have been a part of.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage and update our CI and testing infrastructure (cross-platform)
  • Develop a distributed image analysis framework
  • Maintain a HPC/Hadoop cluster
  • Manage distributed storage
  • Participate in the entire life cycle of our applications; development, testing, documentation, and deployment
  • Contribute to development of Bio-Formats and OMERO

    Requirements:

  • Experience with client-server application development
  • Experience with Linux, Mac OS X or any proprietary Unix flavour
  • Strong collaborative skills with an eye towards efficiency and creativity
  • Advanced Java/Python programming experience
  • Experience with RDBMS (especially PostgreSQL)

    Pluses:

  • Experience with CI
  • Experience in an open source development project
  • NoSQL and/or message queue experience
  • Previous work in distributed processing and HPC clusters
  • Knowledge of object request brokers such as ZeroC’s Internet Communications Engine (ICE)
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation tools such as Ansible
  • Experience of virtualisation technologies such as Docker, VMWare, OpenStack

This is a full-time position, in the UK (Dundee, Scotland). Remote working is possible for the right individual, especially for those based in the UK. Appointment is available immediately until June 2016, with an option of extension depending on funding.

Our customer base is growing quickly, and we want your combination of tech and people skills to help our customers solve problems and get the most out of their databases at Compose. We operate a fleet of various databases, so there's something for everyone: MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Redis, Elasticsearch, RethinkDB, InfluxDB and likely many more!

If you are a developer, DevOps/SRE magician, or database junkie and know how to help developers with technical questions, we want to talk to you. You will be most effective if you have an inquisitive nature, love to learn, and can read and tweak source code written in a variety of languages. We're not just looking to fight fires, we're looking to prevent them. We pride ourselves in providing top-notch support and guidance, so being able to communicate effectively with empathy and compassion is a must.

This is the perfect position for a smart hacker who wants to gain experience at a customer-focused infrastructure startup. Spending time with our customers and product will let you improve your tech chops vastly, and should be solid preparation for a high-end distributed systems engineering position (we need those too, so if you start on support and do a great job, there's a huge amount of room for growth).

Our crew are deep analytical thinkers, group participants, and tenacious bug-squashers. Sound like you? Talk to us about the engineering problems we help customers with every day.

We keep our hiring process pretty straight forward and it's better than what you're use to. How does it work you ask? We start with sample exercises. These are real-world problems our team handles every day. They show you what work at Compose is like (so you can decide if it's a good fit for you) and your responses show us how you work (and we can see how you'd fit at Compose). After we get your sample exercises back and our team objectively looks over them (they don't know anything about applicants, they just see the samples), we'll schedule a group interview (usually over Google Hangout). Once that's behind you, you get a second interview with more Compose folks, and then the possibility of an offer. The whole process is pretty quick and usually done within a few weeks. Pretty cool, right?

Technology isn’t the answer to questions of poverty, public health, education, and the environment, but it shouldn’t be the problem. The current landscape is disjointed and it’s prohibitively difficult for most NGOs to turn promising technologies into better decisions. We’re building an AppStore and data-integration platform that helps social-impact organizations find, connect, and successfully implement key technologies. openFn is a non-profit, open-source project that's funded both by forward thinking foundations and revenue from our integration product.

Apply

You'll help build our Rails REST API and have a hand in backend administration.

What we are looking for

You will be responsible for developing the backend of the application. We use mainly Ruby on Rails and Postgresql. You will implement the different features and endpoints for our API. We have many different challenges that range from pure backend (implement metric calculations) to system administration (setting up a Docker infrastructure) or optimization (scale a database with millions of records). Hopefully, you are comfortable with a unix environment and you see the beauty in finding a simple solution to a problem.

You don’t have to know Rails or Ruby (apparently they don’t always come together). However, you must have some extensive experience with a language and you need to be able to learn Ruby and Rails quickly and eventually become great at it.

You value regular and transparent communication. You should also be comfortable (experience valued) working remotely or with a remote team. Our current product team includes: Luiz (Chicago), Chris (Colorado), Mikhail (Moscow) and Karel (depends when you read this). Feel free to join us in Chicago though!

How we work

We are a young, seed stage venture backed company, with a team of 7. It means that we are big enough to pay competitive salaries yet small enough that everyone strongly impacts the company. In no particular order we value autonomy, transparency and genuinely nice people.

We are a distributed team because we believe that you should live wherever you are happiest and that diversity is awesome. We care more about what you do than when, where, and how you do it. We care more for quality than quantity.

We believe a company should serve their employees and will do whatever we can to assist you or make your life better.

Fine print

  • We will provide whatever equipment you need to get work done
  • If you chose to work remotely, the entire team meets up in person at least once a year in a new destination every time.
  • You’ll get a salary (US$70-90k)
  • You’ll get meaningful equity .2-.5%

2yr

Apply

About the role:

Lonely Planet currently has developers around the world and we're looking for more Ruby folks to join a distributed team working roughly in US time zones. Experience working on web APIs is a bonus but not mandatory.

The Lonely Planet Online team is responsible for delivering lonelyplanet.com and all the underlying technology, a place that inspires, connects, and helps travellers. We are challenged with bringing over 40 years of authored travel content to life on the web in a way that is engaging for our community and relevant for individual travellers.

We’re passionate about our products and the evolving technologies we use to build them. We want engineers that want to build stuff quickly, probably break things along the way and fix it even faster. We use lean principles. We value rapid deployment, metrics driven engineering, and experimentation.

We love open source development and encourage developers to open source their work or contribute to open source projects. Do you contribute to an open source project or write a blog? Let us know. We’re interested in what you’re excited about. Here’s what we’ve been up to:

  • our engineering blog: http://engineering.lonelyplanet.com
  • our GitHub repo: https://github.com/lonelyplanet.

    You:

  • love and have mastered Ruby (and hopefully some other languages too)
  • bore friends by talking about test-driven development and automated testing frameworks (we use minitest, RSpec, Cucumber and Selenium)
  • always use CI and continuous deployment (we use Jenkins)
  • are unable to live without source code management (we use Git and GitHub)
  • need to understand technology problems as part of a broader product vision
  • respect Ron Swanson (OK, this one isn’t really a requirement)
  • have passion for travel and interest in building systems that connect travellers with content and each other.

    Our Technology:

We’re big believers in ‘right tool for the right job’ and encourage engineers to try new technology. But just to give you a taste, this is some of the technology we’re currently big fans of:

  • Ruby and Ruby on Rails
  • Sass, Haml, CoffeeScript
  • iOS and Android
  • AWS, Chef
  • Ubuntu, PostgreSQL

We challenge engineers to be involved in the product, not just the code. In weekly planning sessions, engineers bring product and technology ideas and work together with stakeholders to set priorities and goals for the week.

    At Lonely Planet we:

  • support a healthy work-life balance
  • provide flexible working arrangements
  • work as a unified team across Design, Development, Product, Operations and other broader groups of very talented people
  • are pretty relaxed about most things (every now and then someone even swears, you have been duly warned)
  • don’t really care what you wear (so long as you are clothed)
  • are obsessed with table tennis (not all of us).

Across LP we’re working with large amounts of content from our amazing authors and a growing number of other sources so we can continue to deliver rich, up to date content to travellers through a variety of products and platforms.

Lonely Planet has always been at the forefront of travel in the digital world launching lonelyplanet.com in 1995 and travel guides for Palm Pilot in 1999 and iOS apps a decade later. That passion continues today with teams in London and Nashville continually innovating and improving the experience for travellers visiting our website. We’re entering an exciting new era of Lonely Planet on mobile, being led from our Nashville office.

If you were part of the Media Suite Team last month, you might have:

  • Attended company-wide Agile training;
  • Worked on a real time traffic monitoring and visualisation tool;
  • Contributed to a government-backed system to help plan, coordinate and collaborate on the Christchurch rebuild;
  • Enjoyed a retrospective session on a large project we rolled out just before Christmas;
  • Added a ton of new features to a clever online professional development tool;
  • Rolled out a large event website;
  • Got your head into a web tool for visualising road safety data;
  • Hacked on traffic light signals;
  • Deployed a website for a government agency
  • Eaten Yum Neua (usually a Wednesday);
  • Enjoyed our Friday developer lunch (where one of the team presents “something new” over pizza or sushi).
  • Helped plan New Zealands first Node.js Conference;

The good news is that we are looking for a talented software developer to join our team.

Our projects are generally interesting, large enough to get your teeth into but not so big that you get bogged down forever. We offer variety so you need to bring flexibility.

We use Agile methods (mostly based on Scrum) to deliver our projects and continually reflect upon and make improvements to our systems and processes.

You will be embedded into a multi-developer environment committed to a culture of testing, automation, peer review, knowledge sharing, professional development, remote working and embracing change.

Ideally you would have experience with (or a burning desire to learn) any of the following:

  • Node.js
  • AngularJS or Ember.js
  • SQL databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL)
  • NoSQL databases (MongoDB, CouchDB, Redis)
  • Other server side languages (ruby, python, php)

Why did we put the skill-set last? Because we genuinely value cultural fit and attitude ahead of specific experience. At Toptal, we push the boundaries on what’s possible with Rails every single day, and we’d would love for you to help us get even further. This is a remote position that can be done from anywhere; however, we do things like [rent out hotels in Africa or mansions in Thailand[(http://www.toptal.com/remote/the-ultimate-remote-culture), and you will certainly be invited to come work with us.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, build, and maintain efficient, reusable, and reliable Ruby code.
  • Integrate user-facing elements developed by front-end developers with server-side logic.
  • Identify bottlenecks and bugs and devise elegant solutions.
  • Make strategic technical decisions related to new products and functionality.
  • Help maintain code quality.
  • Onboard and mentor new team members.

    Requirements:

  • You must have 3+ years of web development experience—preference given to candidates who have experience with large applications of some scale.
  • You must have a solid grasp of object-oriented programming, automated software testing, databases, development, and testing methodologies.
  • You must have experience developing a web framework—with Ruby on Rails a plus.
  • Be interested in working across the software stack (Ruby on Rails, JavaScript/CoffeeScript, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch).
  • Be excited about deploying to production multiple times a day and collaborating daily with your team and other groups while working via a distributed model.
  • Take smart risks and champion new ideas.
  • Be comfortable with iterative and incremental development.
  • Be willing to help your teammates, share your knowledge with them, and learn from them.
  • Be open to receiving feedback.
  • You must be a world-class individual contributor to thrive at Toptal. You will not be here just to tell other people what to do.
