This month

Hi there,

I'm Gavin, founder and CEO at Acuity Scheduling.

I’m proud to say we’ve been helping small businesses manage their appointments for 11 years now. In that time, we’ve grown. What started with me pecking away at a keyboard all by my lonesome has turned into a company with nearly 40 employees scattered around the globe. And we’re continuing to grow at a healthy pace.

But I need your help.

We've been able to build a completely remote company with a phenomenal culture and happy employees. And I want Acuity to stay that way. It is deeply important to me that our people are happy — more important to me than just raking in profits. But people aren't my forte. And, as we grow, I'm being pulled in many different directions. So we need someone like you to work full-time to maintain our happiness.

Can you help us to continue to grow and to enjoy our jobs more?

**REQUIREMENTS**

Here's some of what you'll be expected to do:

* Think of new ways to delight remote employees
* Oversee our benefits and manage them in conjunction with Justworks (our PEO)
* Help ensure job postings and interviews are fair and inclusive
* Make sure new employees feel supported even before they start
* Work with other folks to organize company retreats
* Find ways to keep the pulse of employee morale
* Keep me informed of issues so we can solve them together
* You're all about ethics, and you want to be sure we're always on the right side of employment laws

Experience in these areas will help:

* You've helped other managers get better at their jobs
* You know your way around insurance (PPO, HMO, and POS are more than just letters slurped from your alphabet soup)
* Extending job offers is something you can do in your sleep
* You've helped terminate enough people to know how painful it can be, as well as what to do in advance to avoid surprises

**BENEFITS**

And by the way? These other qualities would probably help bucketsful:

* You’re in favor of having 100% of your medical, dental, and vision premiums covered.
* 401K is your middle name. (Or if you just really like the idea of having 3% of your salary contributed to one.)
* You’re an autodidact. Go on. Look it up. (You’ll get a $5,000 credit toward continuing your education.)

If this description sounds like you, there’s a chance that I’d like to offer you $80k-$115k, straight-up cash money. I mean, it’d be in exchange for your professional services each year, but still.

Write me. Or, you know, fill out the application that I will review personally.

cheers,

-Gavin

HEADLINE: STARTUP CHANGING WORLD SEEKS AWESOME HUMAN BEINGS WHO KNOW FREQUENT FLYER TRAVEL AND HUSTLE.

We're looking for a smart, dedicated operations associate with deep experience and passion for reward travel. Our ideal candidate dreams about the best current credit card offers and knows United Airlines' award chart off the top of their head.

Maybe you've worked at a startup - but maybe not. You're diligent, hard-working, and you learn quickly. You can think strategically, but understand that much of the work at this stage is in the details.

About us:

Jane on Main St. has an ever tightening budget and 19,000 miles orphaned across United and American Airlines frequent flyer accounts. Free reward travel is tremendously exciting - yet impossibly complicated, due to an ever-changing ecosystem of multiple programs and offers, airline alliances, and award redemption charts.

SlingShot is here to make it easy. We collect Jane's preferred destinations, spending patterns, credit info and more across 20+ data points, then turn it into a custom-tailored, actionable plan to get her where she wants to go - for free, by applying for the most relevant, effective credit card out of a sea of hundreds.

We don't stop there - after her first trip, we continue to help her optimize her personal finance and travel throughout the customer lifecycle, so that when she thinks travel, she thinks free travel, and when she thinks free travel, she thinks SlingShot.

We’re on a mission to help more people visit more places, expanding on a $30bn TAM as we show America that responsible use of credit can open the door to traveling the world.

We deeply believe that in an increasingly disconnected world, bridging cultures through travel is the path towards a more inclusive, peaceful world.

About our team:

SlingShot's team is completely remote. We subscribe to Buffer's ideology around transparency, culture, and location independence. We expect our folks to be the best, regardless of where they are and when they work.

What you'll do:

As an early stage startup employee, you'll have access to all parts of the business. Your primary responsibility will be putting together comprehensive plans for our users and consulting with them to answer any questions - this is where you will spend 90% of your time. But it doesn't stop there - candidates who show strategic thinking and attention to detail will have input into operational processes, marketing campaigns, and more.

We use a full suite of tools and web apps to serve our clients - you'll quickly learn the ins and outs of each platform, and come up with new suggestions to streamline systems.

About the position:

This position currently pays $15 an hour and starts part-time. The right candidate may have an opportunity for a full-time position within three to six months, depending on business needs and their skill set.

At Snowplow, we are on a mission to empower people to differentiate with data. We provide both the technology and services to enable our customers to not only take control of their data, but allow them to do amazing things with that control.

As part of that effort, we're changing the way that people do digital analytics by moving companies away from a one-size-fits-all mindset and enabling them to collect and own their data themselves.

The Opportunity

Having recently brought on our first dedicated Digital Marketing Manager, we’re now looking to expand this new and critical team. The role will comprise of 3 main parts: (i) working with our Growth Team to identify target audiences that will generate ideas for campaigns and drive awareness of Snowplow (ii) executing, tracking, analysing and testing campaigns, (iii) learning and improving, with a view to scaling our marketing function.

You will be given budget, support and guidance but the rest is up to you. The role comes with huge scope to have a material impact on the growth of Snowplow.

* Our Digital Marketing Manager writes brilliant, insightful content. It will be your job to think how best we can use this content to build effective campaigns

* Just having campaigns however, isn’t enough. We want to know exactly which ones work and why. Therefore tracking, analysing and improving on all live campaigns will be crucial

* We understand the importance of tooling; it’s up to you to decide what works best and we will invest in the tools that you think will best support our growth ambitions

* We believe that collaboration is key. You’ll be working closely with our Sales Team to measure the success of campaigns and uncover whether the right leads are being generated

* We’re growing fast and need to build a function that can scale at pace; you’ll be instrumental in figuring out how we achieve this

We’d love to hear from you if:

* You have a degree in an analytically rigorous field such as Economics, Engineering, Maths, Physics etc, or proven experience in a metrics-focused marketing role

* You’re a doer that gets satisfaction from making things happen

* You are a creative problem-solver

* The opportunity of joining a newly formed team in a growing startup inspires you

* You’re obsessed with metrics and tracking progress

* You love combining technology with imaginative thinking

* A competitive package based on experience, including share options

* Freedom to work wherever suits you best

* Two fantastic company Away-Weeks in a different European city each year (next one is Milan in May 2018!)

We’re quite up-front about the technical challenges our business faces. Running a platform with multiple white-labeled front-ends, that maintains real-time connections into thousands of restaurants’ POS systems, and coordinates complex transactions between these and other third parties (such as payment gateways and gift card providers) is not for the faint of heart!

Olo is located at 26 Broadway in the historic Standard Oil Building, the former home of John D. Rockefeller.  We offer great benefits, such as 20 days of Paid Time Off, fully paid health, dental and vision care premiums, stock options, a generous parental leave plan, and perks like FitBits, rotating craft beers on tap in our kitchen, and food events featuring our clients' menu items (now you know why we give out FitBits!). Swyfft is a fast-moving insurance company that totally gets why people don't normally use "fast-moving" and "insurance company" in the same sentence - and wants to change that.

You know the drill: we need an experienced and flexible operations engineer to help manage every aspect of our runtime systems. Swyfft’s business is cloud-centric (we run on Azure), distributed (nearly everyone in Tech is remote) and data-heavy (we’re in the insurance industry, so of course). As a startup with certain overriding concerns, our infrastructure has grown, shall we say, “organically”, and we need someone who not only can spin up VM’s in Azure, but who knows and cares about the best ways to organize, architect and script them. We need to integrate everything we’re doing into Active Directory, secure our infrastructure, plan for disasters, track software licenses, and figure out how to scale our backend databases. (This is not primarily a DBA position, but the more experience you have with SQL Server in its various flavors, the better.)

So, where will you focus your energy?

* Seek out meaningful certifications and security measures to increase our customers confidence in the delivery of our SaaS solution

* Adopt a CI/CD mindset that is more advanced (and more beneficial) than our current DevOps mentality to accelerate deployments, reduce cost of ownership, and maintain quality

* Understand and simplify the complexities of maintaining both on-premise installations as well as SaaS installation of the same technology stack

Team

* Understand the skills and capacity of your team and how to best utilize them to achieve our goals

* Identify and employ data to empower your team’s continuous improvement

* Develop career paths for your engineers and provide opportunities and feedback that will help them pursue those paths

Organizational

* 2+ years of experience managing a team of at least 5 engineers

* 2+ years as an operations engineer yourself

We're a small shop running a busy site with great aspirations. Come help us keep the site up and the code flowing!

Short term the position will focus on system administration and monitoring. Are we up? Are we patched? Are we highly available? Are requests moving smoothly through the system? etc.

Long term the position is more about release engineering, QA automation, and related tasks. Does the code build? Is it good enough to release? Do the tests pass? Are the core tests automated? etc.

This is a junior to mid-level position. If you are a sysadmin who can script, it is a great opportunity to get into devops.

We're open to remote candidates within a few hours driving distance of Manchester, VT or Ogden, UT.

Operations Engineer

Overview

Brief Description

Azavea is a civic technology firm that uses geospatial data to build software and data analytics for the web.  We’re excited about what we do, we're growing, and we hope you will join us.

Azavea is based in Philadelphia, and we are looking to grow our Operations team to support new cloud computing operations capacity.  Azavea both builds custom web apps and SaaS in several civic domains, including:  climate change, urban ecosystem management, public safety, watersheds, and elections.

We are looking for

We’re looking for an Operations Engineer (devops) who enjoys the intricacies of deploying and scaling an application as much as building it.  We are looking for a person that is passionate about building and operating software that will have a positive impact –someone interested in public service, but not necessarily in working for a government or a non-profit organization, and someone who enjoys working in a variety of technology environments.

Skills & Requirements

Who we are and what we’re doing

As a B Corporation, we’re committed to working on projects that have social and civic impact and advancing the state-of-the-art through research.  Most of our customers are local governments, non-profit organizations and academic or federal research projects.  We build custom apps; perform geospatial analysis; manage several open source civic software projects (DistrictBuilder, OpenTreeMap and others); and develop an open source, high performance computing framework, GeoTrellis, that enables us to build fast analytical applications by distributing the geospatial data processing.  Our developers work across the technology stack, from the server to the database to the front-end.

Half of our colleagues are software engineers and most of the rest are fairly technical, so we don’t have a lot of traditional IT support requirements, but much of our work is increasingly based on Amazon Web Services cloud infrastructure, and we believe that investments made in automated deployment and management processes are important to improving productivity, software quality and user experience.  In addition, over the past year we have deployed three new SaaS products, OpenTreeMap, Cicero, and HunchLab, that are based on AWS.  These new products rely on auto-scaling, EC2, VPC, S3, SWF, RDS and other services and APIs.  While our software developers are all experienced with AWS, as more of our customers rely on these new SaaS products, we are interested in expanding our capacity to research, monitor, optimize, and adapt our infrastructure to changing conditions.

What you’ll do:

* Work with our software teams and the Director of Operations to build out and maintain our IT infrastructure, particularly as it relates to Amazon Web Services.

* Engage in multidisciplinary work that applies an agile process to system architecture, software development, testing and deployment.

* Optimize database, server and client performance to create applications with both functional and responsive user experiences.

* Contribute to both a growing company and to the open source communities that support our work.

You should:

* Know your way around Linux systems.

* Experience architecting solutions based on Amazon Web Services, Rackspace or Google Compute Engine.

* Demonstrate experience with automated deployment, continuous integration, and source control.

* Know how to build and support scalable web applications in a variety of languages (Python, Scala, Go).

* Demonstrate familiarity with networking and security concepts.

* Be interested in working with a small, collaborative team on meaningful projects.

* Get excited about a diversity of both projects and technologies.

You get extra points for:

* Demonstrating your open source or other community service contributions

* Experience with core web technologies (HTML/CSS/JS) and contemporary frameworks like jQuery, Angular, Backbone, and Bootstrap.

* A good understanding of MVC architecture and RESTful design patterns

* Experience with configuration management tooling (Chef, Ansible, Puppet) and application containerization techniques.

* Familiarity with web and AWS security best practices.

You’ll notice that we don’t say “X-Y years of experience” or “M.S. in Computer Science.”  Formal credentials like these are not irrelevant, but we are primarily looking for people who have had experience successfully building sophisticated web applications.  You might have had these kinds of experiences without a college degree.  Or you may be just out of school but worked your way through school and had some great co-op experiences.  Or you might have a math or humanities background but a have a great head for software development.  These are all potentially great backgrounds, and we’d be interested in hearing from you.

Office and Benefits

Our Philadelphia office is located in a brightly lit office on the 4th floor of a converted factory building in the Callowhill neighborhood, a short walk from Center City, the Reading Terminal Market and SEPTA subway and regional rail stations.  For bicyclists, we have in-house bike parking, a shower and lockers.  It’s an open office plan with several smaller rooms for team meetings, private space and concentration time.  You get a top-end Linux workstation, Mac or Windows laptop with a pile of memory for VMs and extra monitors.  We have flex-time to deal with personal stuff, and most people work a 40 – 45 hour week on a regular schedule.  After the first six months, our developers can also spend up to 10% of their time on a geospatial open source, professional development, or R&D project.  For example, some of our colleagues are contributors to the PostGIS, OpenLayers, GDAL and GeoTrellis projects.  Other research projects have included improving dev ops tool chains; using FFT for fast kernel density estimation; working with Spark to develop machine learning tools; and hijacking GPUs for raster data processing.  Once a quarter, we all get together to share our research and learning with our colleagues.

We offer a salary commensurate with skills and experience and a benefits package that includes:

* Fully subsidized health care, dental, prescription plan, including for spouse/partner and children

* Medical reimbursement plan to cover what the health insurance does not

* Retirement plan with matching percentage

* Almost 4 weeks paid vacation plus sick/personal time off

* Family and medical leave

* Flexible work schedule

* Paid maternity and paternity leave

* Paid time off for voting and volunteering

* Education assistance plan

* Student loan assistance

* Public transit and biking reimbursement plans

* Monthly lunches on the house

* 10% time for Research or Training Projects

* Profit-sharing bonus plan

* Financial transparency through an open book policy

* Supremely awesome colleagues

We welcome qualified candidates from all walks of life and value diversity in our company, and we prohibit discrimination based on race, color, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, veteran status, military service, disability unrelated to job requirements, marital status, or domestic partner status.

Job Responsibilities

* Make sure our infrastructure stays up and running 24/7.

* Repair nodes as they fail and deploy new hardware as we scale our infrastructure.

* Perform task related to deploying new software, managing DNS, maintaining OS security patches, etc.

* We have an existing infrastructure that you will be managing for the next 90 days as we transition to our new stack.

* Deploy new systems and scale our infrastructure as we expand our capacity for more content and customers.

Ideal Candidate

This position can be located anywhere in the world with ideally at least a 4 hour overlap with the Pacific Standard Time Zone (PST / UTC-8). We're based out of San Francisco but are migrating to the international level. If you don't have a natural time overlap with UTC-8 you should be willing to work evenings to be able to communicate easily with the rest of the team.

Culturally, we’re a remote company and want to embrace it as a way to reward our employees. We are fine with you working in remote locations as long as you’re generally available for communication and are productive.

The plan is to transfer all operations management to you, including being on call for outages, and knowing our operations tasks including bringing up new machines, dealing with failures, etc.

We want someone to come in full time as a contractor role. I suspect we will need about 40 hours from you per week.

Architecture:

Our infrastructure consists of Java on Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) with the stack running on ActiveMQ, Cassandra, Zookeeper, and Jetty. We use Ansible to manage our boxes. We have a full-text search engine based on Elasticsearch and store our firehose API data within Cassandra.

We have a totally new stack and infrastructure at this point. We recently did a full-stack rewrite and moved all the old code to our new infrastructure. This means we have very little legacy cruft to deal with.

Here's all the cool stuff you get to play with:

* Large Linux / Ubuntu cluster running with the OS versioned using both Ansible and our own debian packages for software distribution.

* Massive amount of data indexed from the web and social media.  We index from 5-20TB of data per month and want to expand to 100TB of data per month.

* Large Cassandra install on SSD.

* SOLR / Elastic Search migration / install.  We’re experimenting with bringing this up now so it would be valuable to get your feedback.

Compensation:

* Salary based on experience. We're willing to be competitive and a great company to work for.

* Ability to work remotely at home. Live work balance is a must.

Elite Digital is a small company of 25 employees specializing in the sale of media through online channels. We work behind the scenes to sell millions of different products around the world. If you've ever bought a rare book or cd through Amazon, you probably bought it from us.

We've been in the industry for more than 10 years, so we are an established company but we still have that scrappy startup spirit. We currently have a single developer handling our entire system, which consists of 150k lines of Perl running on 50 machines.

Your primary role will be leading strategic development efforts and guiding the evolution of our systems. Your secondary role will be assisting with operational support (occasionally after-hours). You will wear many hats in this position: project manager, system administrator, architect, devops, software developer, and more. You'll have the opportunity to tackle some challenging analytical and architectural problems at scale. You'll get to make the big decisions and your work will have a visible impact on the bottom line, every day.

This is a 100% telecommute position, but candidates must be located in the US, ideally in the Los Angeles area. We especially like people who can show us their contributions on GitHub, StackOverflow, or CPAN.
