\nWe're looking for someone to lead the development of our recently launched web app, [Manga Method](https://mangamethod.com/), as well as help us to improve our content-focused Wordpress site, All Language Resources.\n\nBoth sites are in the language learning niche (ie, Spanish, French, etc).\n\n**Manga Method** makes it easy to learn a language via comics. While reading, users can hear the dialogue spoken by a voice actor, as well as see translations of the lines in English. Users are also able to contribute translations and recordings to the site. \n\nAdditionally, we make a donation to a non-profit that provides clean water access when users contribute. \n\nYou'll be taking over this project from the development agency we worked with on the initial version. For now, you'll be the only developer working on it. \n\n**All Language Resources** is a content website where we write reviews of language learning products. While the majority of your time will be spent on Manga Method, we'll also need some help in fixing bugs and other updates, such as connecting data from airtable into our content. \n\n**Terms**\n* Full time (40 hrs/week) - Could consider alternatives for the right candidate\n* 3 Weeks PTO\n* Flexible working hours, but some overlap with Beijing time would be preferred\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$30,000 — $60,000/year\n\n\n#Location\n🌏 Worldwide

If you have a soft spot for bootstrapped, profitable companies with a meaningful product, and you want to use your frontend development skills for good, you’ll like this.\n \n\nAbout us:\n\nDrops’ goal is to turn language learning into a delightful game while ensuring effective learning. We teach 31 languages, was featured by both the App Store and Play Store multiple times - and received the β€œBest of 2018” title this year! - and the company is still run by the founders. We are a small, super-capable remote team mainly spread across Europe. We’re working synchronously, so time zones matter for us. We communicate via Slack, Github and have releases multiple times a week.\nWe want to be the #1 app for vocabulary learning and we are getting there quickly with our current user base of 9 million, a monthly active of >1,000,000 and an average store rating of 4.7.\nYou can find us here: https://languagedrops.com\n \n\nAbout you:\n\nYou’ll be responsible for establishing Drops on the web, from a technical perspective. This means a lot of ownership, which we cultivate by having a flat structure.\n\nYou’re a no-nonsense person, who is comfortable taking on and managing multiple different projects at the same time, who has been working in working at a product company and has extensive front-end development experience.\n\nYou have been working with React for years, have deep knowledge of everything that’s happening in the browser and looking for challenges in growing a product from tens of thousands to millions of visitors per month.\n\nYou strongly prefer static typing over dynamic languages, and use every opportunity to transform code that doesn’t use types into code that does. You generally prefer to use a minimal set of simple tools to a diverse range of complex ones.\n\nWe’ve built our mobile app with react-native, so we can easily port it to the web and start sharing most of our code - and the challenges that this brings are of your interest.\n\nYou like to have a variety of projects - at this job, you’ll be developing a complex web app, a static site generator (gatsby), and even sometimes helping out on our marketing website, that’s being re-built with webflow. \n\nWe want everyone to see the big picture: this means you already pushed your boundaries outside of β€œbeing a developer” and are knowledgeable about web product growth frameworks, SEO, best practices regarding retention and monetization.\n\nWe’re building a small, but super capable team. You’re naturally more interested in the fate of the product & driven to grow professionally, than in managing people.\n\nWe value clear and honest communication and transparency, it’s the linchpin of our culture and current success and freedom. You will be involved in both high and low level decision making and will be available during European working hours (9AM - 6PM GMT).\n\nWe are looking for a missionary rather than a mercenary.\n\n\n# Responsibilities\n You will:\n* Work cross functionally with our designer / data analyst / backend developer / project owner to define, scope, estimate and plan various aspects of the product.\n* Work independently and with other engineers to develop new web experiences.\n* Support of production applications / sites that you’ve built or helped to build.\n* Communicate effectively and often to ensure that everyone is aligned. \n\n# Requirements\nYou have:\n* At least 4 years of experience in building web products.\n* At least 2 years of experience in building with React.\n* Experience in architecting and developing web apps and programmatically generated sites (static site generators, like gatsby) with with thousands of pages.\n* Experience in understanding basic funnels, and collaborating with support to resolve user-facing issues.\n* Strong understanding of SEO, and experience in optimising websites for Google.\n* Project management experience (everyone is managing projects at Drops).\n* Strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work well cross-functionally.\n* Experienced in strongly typed languages, and/or Typescript/Flow.\n

\nAt ActiveState we have made a name for ourselves providing language distros for Perl, Python and TCL. Now we’re building an ambitious Platform to build and distribute every language on the platform so that no engineer ever has to suffer dependency hell again, and we need your help to add Ruby to it!\n\nThis position is open to full-time telecommuters anywhere in North America. You can also choose to work from our headquarters in beautiful Vancouver, BC.\n\nThis position is open to both junior (including fresh out of school) and senior applicants. The salary for this position will be commensurate with your experience.\n\nWhat You’ll Be Doing\n\nAs a Ruby Language Specialist on our team, you are responsible for using your deep understanding of Ruby; it’s internals, dependency management, idioms and community to teach our Platform to build and distribute Ruby for multiple Operating Systems.  You'll be responsible for building a Ruby runtime from its source code and writing software to consume everything in the Ruby ecosystem.  Note this is not a Ruby development role, rather you'll be writing software to create custom Ruby distributions and this software won't necessarily be written in Ruby.\n\nOur day to day work practices are centered around GitHub, pull requests, code review, CI for testing, and agile development with Pivotal Tracker as our project management tool. We’re always looking to improve our practices and we expect you to help us to do so.\n\nOur team is scattered around the US and Canada, so we coordinate with each other and the rest of the company using Slack for chat, Highfive for video calls and screen sharing, Pivotal Tracker, and Google Drive.\n\nWe like to use open source software whenever possible, and we also like to contribute back to the open source ecosystem. We embrace open sourcing both libraries and tools developed in-house as long as those are not mission-critical code.\n\nWhat’s In It For You\n\n\n* Working for a stable and growing company that offers the environment and personal growth potential of a start-up.\n\n* The chance to work with a smart, passionate team of people.\n\n* Competitive salary, bonus, and stock option plan.\n\n* Comprehensive benefits package and health/wellness credit program.\n\n\n\n\nRequirements\n\n\n* Deep understanding of Ruby internals and ecosystem\n\n* Experience with C programming on multiple operating systems (Windows/UNIX/OSX) and the Ruby build system\n\n* Excellent written and spoken skills, both technical and non-technical. You’ll need to work closely with your developer teammates, as well as be able to have coherent conversations with people from QA, sales, marketing, and other parts of the company.\n\n* A willingness to engage in the process of defining our work through conversations with product management, other engineering teams, and the rest of the company.\n\n\n\n\nAssets\n\nIf you have experience with any of the following please make sure to highlight it in your cover letter:\n\n\n* You are a maintainer, contributor to the core Ruby code base or have a popular Ruby based Open Source project. We make special accommodations to help you maintain those activities.\n\n* Experience working on a build system.\n\n* Experience building the core Ruby language runtime from source code\n\n* Agile processes, including breaking large projects up into smaller stories, estimation, working in branches (GitHub Flow), code review, and CI.\n\n* C or C++ code and debugging compiler issues across platforms.\n\n* Perl, Python, Tcl, or Ruby, especially an understanding of their respective language communities and their toolchains.\n\n* Big iron operating systems including Solaris, AIX, and HP-UX.\n\n* Build tools such as make, autotools, bazel, etc.\n\n\n\n\nWorking At ActiveState\n\nActiveState has a collaborative, respectful, and professional culture. We’re all about working together to find the best solutions, and making sure that the experience of doing so is positive for everyone involved. There is a commitment from the CEO on down to making work at ActiveState a great experience for all.\n\nOur company is a team of 40+ and growing, with 2/3rds of the positions in technical roles. This job post is closed and the position is probably filled. Please do not apply.
\nWARNING\n\nI am just a one-man startup (with a few part timers), pre-product with no outside funding (yet). But I experienced a huge problem and have a great solution for it. But I need help.\n\nThis isn’t a job posting for someone who likes the 9-5 life and the safety of a regular paycheck.\n\nThis is a posting for someone who wants to make a fundamental improvement in the life of millions of people. There are approximately 1.5 billion language learners in the world, but only 7-15% can claim fluency. That means there are more than 1 billion people who started a language but never got there.\n\nIf you’re still reading and excited about the opportunity to promote foreign language literacy, you’re probably who I am looking for. \n\n--\n\nThe problem\n\nI speak Vietnamese, English and Japanese. My language ability has opened many doors and allowed me to travel the world. But learning a language IS HARD. And now I want to give back by making it easier to master a language. A. LOT. EASIER.\n\nStudying Japanese was probably one of the hardest things I have ever done. I have been studying for 7 years and at this point I still can’t say I’m fluent. I’m stuck at the intermediate hump, where real-world content is too difficult and time-consuming to master and most edtech tools like Duolingo are too basic. After a long day at work, I can’t be bothered to pick up a dense book full of characters that I don’t even know how to put in a dictionary in the first place. Studying a language requires persistence, time and motivation, which come in rare quantity for people with work and personal responsibilities.\n\n35% of all language learners are at the intermediate level, meaning that there are more than 500 million people who are likely facing the same issue I have. The most motivated ones make it over the hump, but most don’t.\n\n--\n\nThe solution\n\nI always wish I had a personal learning assistant, someone who would know my level and give me content that matches my current ability. Someone who would answer questions on the spot when I run into words or phrases I don’t know. Someone who would give me daily quizzes to make sure that I retain what I’m studying. That way, most of the time I spend studying is actually for studying, not fumbling around with a dictionary or flashcards.\n\nThat is the product I want to make. Using machine learning and natural language processing, as well as some good old spaced repetition system, I want to create a product that serves as your personal learning assistant. Showing is better than telling, so here is what it looks like: www.helium-app.com/?utm_source=stackoverflow. I don’t want to make a cookie-cutter language app, I want to make a pedagogically-informed, intelligent and personalized learning app. This is the future of edtech.\n\n--\n\nThe feedback\n\nIn about five days we’ve had 500 completely organic signups and tons of positive feedback. The average conversion rate is 20% (having excluded the first day which was mainly friends and family signups). People need this!\n\nHere is one:\n\n“My name is James and I'm more interested in Helium than the average person. I've been learning Chinese for years, and this is something I've always thought needed to be made. But on top of that, I'm a developer as well, and really appreciate the work you must be putting into this app. Right now I'm living in China still trying to improve my Chinese, and this app is basically exactly what I need. I have plenty of friends here studying for the HSK test that would absolutely love it as well.”\n\n--\n\nWhat’s in it for you\n\nIf you’ve gotten this far, chances are the opportunity to create something from scratch with massive potential impact together with smart and passionate colleagues is what gets you going. In addition to that, I will give you equity, and a lot of it, to make this thing happen. I’m committing my foreseeable future to this and just quit a very well-paid PM gig, and I want to make sure you do too.\n\nWe can talk about a minimal salary to support your expenses, but there is nothing that says I’m in like sipping ramen for months in exchange for a chunk of nothing that would be something when we make Helium a reality.\n\nJoin Helium, and rise!
