Job Description
The Role
SOCi is a new-age social media management platform aimed at streamlining the process of managing social.
We’re looking for someone who considers programming an art form; someone who loves writing elegant code and has an innate need to create components that are easy to reuse and work well together. The thought of copy-pasting coding should cause you to shiver in horror, and badly formatted code should give you nightmares.
The candidate will need the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment where quality controls and regular code reviews are rewarded by the chance to work side-by-side with other extraordinary developers - all while goofing off in the team chat room. We work hard, but make sure to laugh a lot, too.
As a new software engineer at SOCi you will kick off things by learning your way around our system. Once you are up and running, we will end up passing you bigger objectives like rewrites, new features, or system updates (and naturally, there will always be some bug maintenance, too). We move fast, so you will usually be handed some feature mocks, discuss the user cases, and then head off to the tracks. We do, however, roadmap all of our development - so despite the fast pace, you will have at least a vague understanding of where we are at, and where we are going with the product in the next few months.
The Product
SOCi helps businesses, particularly those with many locations, scale social media management. By leveraging the SOCi product, businesses can save significant time ideating, creating and managing all aspects of the social media management workflow. Can't think of great things to post? SOCi can help by leveraging our content discovery engine. Want to post the same message to hundreds of social profiles all at once? We can do that too, using our group profile manager... and these are only a few of the many awesome features housed in the SOCi platform!
Skills & Requirements
Required
- Solid knowledge of full-stack web application development
- Familiarity with JS, Backbone, and the LAMP stack
- Solid understanding of object oriented and functional programming
- Ability to work, learn, and thrive in a fast-paced environment
Beneficial
- Experience with MySQL, PHP, Python or Ruby (we use PHP)
- Experience with web UI/UX best practices
- Experience with JavaScript testing frameworks
- Familiarity with Facebook, Twitter and other social APIs
- Experience with Amazon Cloud platform services
Ideally the candidate will have 2-5 years of web development experience.
About SOCi, Inc.
Winner of the San Diego Innovator of the Year (http://on.mktw.net/ZULfCc) and named a San Diego Venture Group 2014 and 2015 COOL Company, SOCi brings Big Brand social media campaign and promotion capabilities to small businesses and their service providers. SOCi, Inc. is based out of downtown San Diego.

Your main focus will be on developing new features, building enhancements and supporting/maintaining our PHP5.6 (and getting ready for 7!) application within GitHub.
You'll work with HTML5/CSS3, appreciate a clean/simple UI and be all "OMG!!!1 RESTful JSON API, jQuery, handlebarise all the things!" and know what that means!
We work with some chunky MySQL databases, so profiling and optimising experience is essential.
You'll have a good understanding, and be able to take advantage of, the broader technologies we use and rely upon such as Vagrant/Puppet, Composer, Redis, LAMP/SSL, AWS S3, DNS, SSH /SFTP, PHPUnit and Behat.
We're big believers in "Done is better than Perfect", so when you come across code that isn't quite MVC and hasn't seen a unit test, you're still able to quickly carry on with the task at hand while concocting a cunning plan for improvement.
You'll join in with your fair share of evening/weekend on-call support for which you're paid extra on top of salary. This is only used for rare emergencies (2–3 times/year) but provides vital reassurance for our customers.
Work from home, or wherever you like really
We love working remotely, so above all, you need to be comfortable in that environment or be willing to try something new. This means you get to choose where you work, providing you're suitably drenched in wi-fi and in reach of Trello/Slack. We're all about the output, and trust you to do a great job wherever you are.
That said, a lot of the team live in Leicester so usually meet up in person every week or two with lunch on us, just because it's nice to do so. And we work closely with our customers, so it's likely you'll need to say hello to them in person a couple of times a year too.
With great power, comes great responsibility
Attention to detail, clear written skills and the ability to work in a team are essential.
Since we're not usually all in the same room, you absolutely must be able to communicate well, and share progress often. That doesn't mean we interrupt/distract each other though, as we're firm believers in being approachable through asynchronous working.
We'll expect you to be constantly learning and developing your skills, and to be fully involved in sprint planning, retros and daily scrums along with all the developers and our project manager. |

Who We Are
BuySellAds operates the largest self-serve advertising marketplace on the web. We were recently named to the Inc500 as one of the fastest growing private companies in the United States. We're a technology-focused company that believes in building great software to make advertisers and publishers more efficient and successful. We're a team of 18, mostly remote, with a small component of the team working out of our Boston HQ. We have tens of thousands of users and a growing product offering. Our web apps are primarily built with PHP and MySQL. We also maintain some ad serving software in Go and C++.
What You'll Do
- Help shape and implement new features within BuySellAds' web applications. This means working with the rest of the engineering team (fellow developers, designers, and product owners) as well as sales and support folks to figure out what we should (and shouldn't) be building and how to build it well.
- Write code. PHP, SQL, JavaScript, CSS... you know the drill. We're not expecting you to design our UIs, but you'll need to be able to take a non-functioning UI and make it all work. This will entail some database design, some API documentation research, etc.
- Integrate with in-house and third-party ad servers through REST and SOAP APIs.
- Keep things running smoothly by identifying and fixing bugs, keeping vulnerabilities out of our codebase, etc.
- Help the company grow.
- Do this all from your home somewhere in the United States or from our office in Boston.
Requirements
- We don't have strict requirements for formal education or years of experience with specific technologies, but needless to say, we're looking for someone knowledgeable and experienced. To that end, these bullet points should seem comfortable:
- Full-time experience in web development, preferably with a LAMP-like stack
- Experience working with sizable MySQL installations
- Experience working with a team of developers and designers
- Experience with complex API integrations
- Knowledge of software/web development best practices, including web security basics, etc.
- Ability to get things done as a "self-starter," i.e., without micromanagement
- Eligibility to work in the United States

We are seeking a full-time Front-end Developer who can thrive as part of a dynamic and progressively-thinking front-end team. We are looking for someone who writes clean, semantic, well-documented code, and who enjoys working collaboratively with a team of developers, managers, and project owners. We expect that all candidates for this position will possess a mastery of CSS, HTML and the DOM, be comfortable building strategic CSS architecture for some of the biggest sites on the web, and have an affection for up-and-coming technologies and techniques.
Here at Lullabot we strive to implement best practices and follow coding standards for all of the code we produce. This requires the candidate to have experience with Sass and Compass, as well as a knowledge of Drupal, JavaScript, and PHP.
We are looking for a team member with impeccable technical skills, combined with the ability to be creative and collaborative. They'll be able to manage themselves in a distributed working environment while providing superb communication to team members and clients. Equally important is an individual that can stand behind and support the core values we have here at Lullabot.
Technical Expectations:
- Proficiency in core technologies for front-end development (CSS3, HTML5).
- Hands on experience with projects that implemented responsive design.
- High level usage and history using Sass and Compass.
- Talent for all aspects of Drupal theming including: using the UI, configuration, and basic site administration, creation/manipulation of template files, preprocessing, and writing/overriding theme functions.
- Comfortable working with jQuery and other JavaScript libraries for front-end development.
- Knowledge and adherence to coding standards.
- Debugging experience in IE8+, as well the other more modern browsers.
- Familiarity with Git, LAMP stack, terminal commands, and project ticketing systems.
Personality:
- Strong communication skills and a positive attitude toward your work. We love our work and you should too!
- Self-directed: able to work independently and within a team, and consistently manage your own tasks.
- Team player: we expect that you work and play well with others.
- A healthy work/life balance: we encourage you to have a life outside of work.
More about Lullabot:
We are an 8-year-old distributed (sometimes called "virtual") company without a central office. Though both of the company's founders now live in the Providence, RI, area, the remainder of our 40+ employees are spread out across the Western Hemisphere. We're very proud of our team of experts and our contributions and leadership in the Drupal community. We simply hire the most talented people wherever they are. We prefer to provide an intimate, high-quality, highly focused relationship with our clients. This focus on quality over quantity means that we try to grow slowly and we turn down many more projects than we accept.
We're asking applicants to submit a 2-minute video introducing themselves. We realize that for many people this is an exercise in self-consciousness; however, being a virtual company, it helps us quickly get to know you. Just shoot something with your computer's webcam and post it as a password-protected video on Vimeo. You can post your video elsewhere, or get more fancy with it if you like, but we're really just looking for a brief introduction. Take a look at one - of - these - videos to see what's gotten folks hired in the past.
