As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and depend on conferencing, instant messaging and screen sharing for collaboration. You should have experience developing, deploying, supporting, troubleshooting services that support voice & messaging. Ideally, this will include Voice over IP (such as SIP) and/or Instant Messaging (such as XMPP). You should be familiar with popular open source options, and even better if you know about commercial ones too. You also should not be afraid of pulling out tools like Wireshark and wrangling gigabytes of logfiles.

From the beginning we have been a distributed team, with headquarters in Atlanta, but our team members are located around North America, South America, and Europe. We build tools that enable people to communicate fluidly across a wide range of devices, technologies and physical spaces. FreeTextbooks is a startup revolutionizing the college experience. We're just starting with textbooks. We know textbooks are about as sexy as Mr. Rogers (R.I.P.), but we're punching into a huge industry ripe for radical change.

Students spend $14 billion every year on textbooks, and we're creating an on-campus experience that eats into that. We take frequent trips to campus & throw some fun parties. We currently have more than 300 student reps on 30 campuses, and, after doubling in size since last year, we're shooting to do it again in 2015.

  Demonstrated proficiency in Javascript, HTML5 & CSS3, jQuery, & front-end Development. To a lesser extent, some junior knowledge of Ruby on Rails.

We are now looking for a full stack developer to join our core team in developing the next generation solution for social media moderation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Actively participate in development planning and innovation
  
• Implementing and deploying new features on our existing software and developing new projects
  
• Participate in requirements analysis and development planning activities
  
• Understand business and actively participate in decision making
  
  REQUIREMENTS
  
  Preferably but not limited to:
  
  
• PHP , Hack, Python
  
• OOP and functional programming
  
• Data modeling and relational databases. Elastic search and/or other database search optimizations. NoSQL and/or previous work with big data would be great.
  
• ReactJS (would be an asset), jQuery, JavaScript, HTML 5, CSS 3, Bootstrap, Backbone, responsive design.
  
• REST APIs. Experience with Facebook, Twitter, Youtube APIs would be an asset.
  
• Amazon AWS and experience with server management.
  
• Spam filtering and language processing technologies would be an asset.
  
• Git, automated testing, Agile methodologies.
  
• Network protocols and web security
  
• (optional) general knowledge of developing mobile apps
