**DESCRIPTION**

Before you start reading, keep in mind that the aim of this job ad is to give you a feel for what it’s like to work at Catapult. There’s lots of research which suggests people often don’t apply because of so-called “requirements” in a job description. If you’re an experienced engineer, like the sound of working here and see something you’re not an expert in yet, that’s great, apply and you can learn it here!

What you’re getting yourself in for

Our mission is to build the worlds best part time job. We spend our time thinking about how to give a global workforce complete control of their own work life while completely automating the hundreds of thousands of man hours which would normally be required to manage people on this scale.

We do this through React Native based iOS and Android applications, React based web applications, a mixture of Ruby/ Rails and Phoenix/ Elixir on the backend and Rest API’s to communicate with machine learning services from our data science team.

Businesses ranging from the largest high-street retailers to five star hotels and and independent coffee boutiques rely on Catapult as their casual workforce. If you’ve spent time in London, you’ve probably been served by a Catapult waiter or sales assistant without even realising it!

Our company values https://writing.joincatapult.com/our-values/ are really important to us and influence every facet of how we work together.

Things we’ve been working on recently

No two days are ever the same in a startup, but to give you a flavour of what we’ve been up to recently:

Building a stand-alone signup service to test different approaches to user on-boarding. We took this as an opportunity to test out Phoenix + GraphQL. We were so impressed with the productivity boost we’re also now incorporating GraphQL into our primary Rails application
Using Kubernetes to deploy standalone environments for our feature branches, complete with anonymised production data
Re-thinking how we test Javascript and what the line should be between unit tests and acceptance tests
About the role

We’ve been growing rapidly over the last three years and as we start our international roll out, we’re looking for ambitious engineers to help us build the future of work. Our engineering principles https://writing.joincatapult.com/engineering-principles/ give a good feel for how we work together and what we value.

You’ll be working joining out remote team so working from anywhere in Europe is fine! We work in small cross-functional pods of developers who focus on a particular product area and encourage people to rotate across teams.

**REQUIREMENTS**

We've found that the best developers are outliers so these are guidelines rather than firm requirements. If you're passionate about building great software, finding the best tools for the job and learning new skills, we'd like to hear from you!

About You

* Solid experience developing web or mobile applications commercially
* You really buy into the importance of getting things into the hands of a user quickly and then iterating
* You actively think about when to incur technical debt and when to pay it back
* You like to explore new technologies and have a keen eye for when something new can add real business value
* Bonus points for Rails, React, Phoenix or GraphQL

**BENEFITS**

As well as being a part of a well funded startup at one of the most exciting phases of it’s growth, you’ll get:

* Competitive salary + stock options
* A strong approach to professional development and mentorship, everyone has a dedicated L&D budget for books, training, conferences and the like
* Product retreats at least every two months where the whole team either comes to London or goes somewhere warm (the next one's in Lisbon!), looks back on how we can improve and then spends a week together hacking on new ideas and exploring new technologies
* Regular social events & the opportunity to travel to our other offices
* Company Macbook Pro which you’re free to take home
* A flexible work environment focused on output not hours
* 25 days holiday + bank holidays

Hiya 👋We’re the folks at Jilt, an email marketing platform built for eCommerce. We help thousands of stores surprise and delight their customers with automated emails that drive sales. We’re looking for a smart, detail-oriented person to join our team as our first front-end engineer.

**The Role**

You’ll work closely with your teammates on the engineering team (Justin, Lucas, Hannes, Dani, and Jonathan) to create intuitive & engaging interfaces based on direction from the product team (Beka). While Jilt is built as a traditional Ruby/Rails app, we use Angular (v1) to power our visual email editor and Vue.js for some areas with a lot of dynamic content. You’ll work on both areas and help engineer an incredible user experience.

While the majority of your time will be spent focused on the app front-end, we have some features that are powered by JavaScript running on our customer’s stores. This means you’ll be able to flex your defensive programming skills and ensure our code works in harmony with a wide variety of browsers and other 3rd party scripts.

As our first dedicated front-end engineer, the team will often look to you for advice and direction. You’ll help shape our best practices, decide on frameworks and tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. You’ll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.

**Here are some things you may do on a given day:**

- Write some new JavaScript (with unit tests 😄) to improve part of the onboarding flow
- Track down a tricky bug in the email editor and develop a hotfix
- Research and write a pitch to migrate our CSS to a new framework
- Transform the design for a new part of the UI into HTML / CSS

**On the first day you will:**

- Meet your team and get familiar with how we work
- Setup your local environment and tooling
- Commit a small tweak to the codebase and ship it to production

**In the first week you will:**

- Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement
- Participate in code review for a teammate’s code
- Help a team member with fixing a bug

**In the first month you will:**

- Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature
- Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues
- Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project

**You**

You love writing JavaScript that’s clear, self-documenting, and standards-compliant, whether by itself, alongside jQuery, or as part of a JS framework like Vue, Angular, or React. You believe in combining JS with beautiful & semantic HTML / CSS and are comfortable with supersets like CoffeeScript and templating languages like Slim. You’re also comfortable with Ruby / Rails and can move seamlessly between working on the back-end code that produces the data you need for front-end interactions.

You love beautiful design and working with others to transform concepts into real-world interfaces that are a joy to use. You love keeping up-to-date with the latest best practices and tools, and are constantly tweaking and improving the way you work.

You’re excited to solve engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible, and most importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.

Finally, you can’t wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. You’re an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, or editing a wiki page. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand.

Our team is fully remote and stays in touch primarily via Slack and weekly check-ins over Zoom. That said, we believe spending time together is important — availability for 1-2 company-paid [team trips](https://jilt.com/blog/remote-team-retreat-2018/) per year is necessary.

This is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.

**Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:**

- Competitive salary
- Annual incentive for meeting team and company goals
- 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀)
- Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents)
- 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents)
- 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers
- Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection
- Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive
- Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences)
- Home office or co-working allowance
- A Kindle to help you keep learning

*We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.*

Requirements

Please apply directly through the link below. Applications accepted through **August 31st.**

**Plug in Useful make some of the [most popular SaaS web apps for Shopify](http://https://www.pluginuseful.com/collections/apps). With over 100k users we've followed the rapid growth of Shopify and are looking to add a senior engineer to our 100% remote team of six.**

As a Senior Software Engineer you'll have worked with React and Rails before and ideally have used the Flux pattern on a decent-sized web app. You can both architect software, building it from the ground up, and maintain existing systems in a thoughtful way.

Just as important is how you approach problems and work in the team. We don't want someone who puts their headphones on for three days and churns out code. Your instinct is to collaborate.

You'll work closely with our product manager to gather requirements, come up with technical solutions, present these in a clear non-technical way and agree on what to do.

You'll both mentor and learn from our software engineer through code reviews and working on problems together. And you'll help our QA tester to understand changes, how best to test them and be responsive in fixing bugs.

We're 100% remote across different timezones so clear, regular communication is key. Your location isn't important as long as there's a roughly 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time.

You're experienced in working remotely and have found a schedule and setup that works best for you. If that's a coworking space we can pay for that, but that's optional since you decide where you're at your most productive.

### Skills & Experience
* 1+ years React or similar frontend frameworks
* 3+ years Rails
* 5+ years software engineering
* Have worked on web apps, ideally B2B SaaS
* Software architecture
* Have used a few different software patterns
* Very collaborative
* Clear non-technical communicator
* Have worked remotely
* Curious about new technologies
* Ideally have worked with Kanban

Full time, 100% remote from any location with a 4 hour overlap with Eastern Time and European Time. We believe strongly in work/life balance with reasonable hours (usually 37.5 hours or occasionally more when required) and paid time off.

Requirements

Apply by sending your CV and a brief email intro to jobs@pluginuseful.com. We love it when you mention something from the job description.

Senior Software Engineer - Core

Reaction Commerce is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join our growing core engineering team. As a part of the core team at Reaction Commerce you’ll have the opportunity to help shape the fastest growing open source commerce platform in the world. We’re looking for people who are highly communicative, self-directed, with well developed critical thinking skills.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you’ll be expected to write great code, ship product features independently and with a team, propose architectural recommendations, teach and enforce documentation standards and software design patterns during code reviews,  and participate in the technical interview process.

Responsibilities

As a senior software engineer at Reaction Commerce, the day to day responsibilities are broad and you’re ultimately responsible for shipping software. While not exhaustive, this is a list of the type of work that we expect you’ll spend the majority of your time on day to day.

* Write great code that is well tested and thoroughly documented

* Develop, support, and improve our GraphQL API

* Design, build, and maintain real-time, event-driven systems, services, and features

* Create new components and improve existing components in our React component library

* Teach and enforce software engineering patterns during code reviews

* Work with the architecture team by proposing recommendations, building prototypes, and providing feedback.

* Work with the QA Engineering team to define test patterns and implement and improve CI processes for projects you’re working on.

* Author documentation for development patterns and features

* Actively communicate status of tasks and projects to peers and leadership

Qualifications

This list of qualifications are our “hard requirements.” We’ve worked to keep it short and move anything that isn’t truly a requirement into the nice-to-have section. We believe you’ll excel in this role if you have significant experience doing the following:

* Writing modern JavaScript/ECMAScript code that is clean, well tested, and thoroughly documented

* Developing, optimizing, and scaling React and/or Node applications in production

* Writing automated tests in JavaScript

* Developing, securing, and consuming an API

* Developing with either relational (e.g. Postgres) or document databases (e.g. MongoDB)

* Communicating complex issues to technical and non-technical people in writing through documentation, proposals, and blog posts.

We value your knowledge and skills more than an arbitrary amount of experience using any specific technology or a university degree in a specific field. As a Senior Software Engineer, we expect that you’ll have the skills and knowledge that are typically gained working on production applications for many years and studying in a university Computer Science program, but we don’t care how you’ve acquired those skills or how long it took you.

Nice to have

Reaction is creating the leading commerce platform for enterprise retailers and the world’s first event-driven commerce platform. As we’re working with a lot of newer technology, we don’t expect candidates will necessarily have experience with our entire tech stack. The idea candidate will have deep experience in a few of these technologies, exposure to more, and excitement and capability to learn new skills as necessary.

* Designing, developing, documenting, securing, and/or consuming a GraphQL API using Relay or Apollo

* Developing inclusive, accessible applications, including experience with accessibility (a11y), internationalization (i18n), and localization (l10n)

* Using MongoDB at Scale

* Developing event driven applications using software such as Kafka

* Functional programming experience

* Programming in a JVM language such as Clojure, or Scala

* Developing commerce or logistics software

* Developing and deploying containerized applications using Docker and/or Kubernetes

* Developing with Elasticsearch or other search engine technology

* Maintaining or contributing open source projects

* Experience with Kafka

* Experience using Clojure

* Working remotely

Characteristics

As a distributed team, building open-source software, we deeply understand that being a great software engineer is much more than just understanding design patterns and having a deep technical skillset. Our culture is one of communication, character, cooperation, and competence and we believe that people who have these foundational characteristics will fit in well and be able to hit the ground running.

We believe in being inclusive, welcoming, and supportive of anyone who comes to us with the desire to build, collaborate, and lead. To learn more, read our diversity statement.

* Motivated, self-starter who can work in a distributed team environment

* Open-minded mentality

* Goal oriented personality

* Empathy for customers, community, and co-workers

* Tendency to teach others what you know and excitement for sharing knowledge

* Growth oriented mindset and a desire to be better today than yesterday

* Desire to deliver an exceptional customer experience

* Critical thinker who will work to solve the right problem

* Cooperative attitude and an ability to pair program effectively with other engineers

* Ability to think holistically for a given project or problem

Details

* Position:  Full Time

* Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience, stock options, medical and dental benefits

* Location: Americas Time zone

* Hours:

* ~40-50 hours/week

* Flexible: need to run an errand or have an appointment? Communicate and coordinate with your team and it’s not a problem.

* You’ll be expected to make team meetings and work at least 5 hours/day that overlap with 9AM-5PM Pacific

Benefits and Perks

* 100% coverage for medical, dental, and vision

* Minimum vacation policy & stipends

* Up to 12 weeks for new parent leave

* Stocked kitchen, weekly lunches, and office dogs at Santa Monica HQ

* 401K retirement plan

* Work from anywhere in the world

* Learning stipend for books, classes, or trainings

* Diverse and inclusive culture

* Bi-annual in-person all-hands meetups

Application Process: What to expect

Our application process begins once we receive your application and cover letter. Due to the volume of applicants, we only consider candidates who submit both and application with the required information, along with a detailed cover letter outlining why you want to work at Reaction Commerce. Candidates who don’t submit the necessary information will not be considered.

If we decide to move forward with your application, we’ll schedule a 30-45 minute screening video call via Zoom to learn more about your interests, talk about the role, and determine if Reaction Commerce is a mutual fit

We’ll then have a series of technical interviews. The first interview will be a technical conversation where we’ll discuss previous experience and work to uncover how your skill set might fill a need at Reaction Commerce.

Following the technical interview we’ll have one or more interviews focused on collaboratively solving problems with members of the engineering team. These interviews will involve writing code in a remote pair-programming type of scenario.

Finally, if appropriate based on location, we’ll conduct an onsite interview so that you’ll have the opportunity to meet key stakeholders on the team. If we can’t do this in person, we’ll arrange it as a video call.

At the offer stage, you will learn more about compensation, equity range, and benefits. While the entire process can take 4-6 weeks total depending on schedule availability, we’re committed to communicating progress frequently so you won’t be left wondering about the status of your application. We look forward to meeting you!

An amazing opportunity for full-stack Javascript developers to build a modern, serverless product from scratch, creating the team working-style and best practice as we go.

Job description

If it involves client and server-side Javascript, you can build it, and if it's some new technology you haven't used before... you'll figure it out.

Selecting and using modern development methods and following agile practices, you will build top-to-bottom functionality with ReactJS and React Native for the web & mobile front-ends, through to AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, Kinesis, Aurora, Cognito, Pinpoint, Cloud Directory, Redshift, SQS, Quicksight… and as much of the rest of the AWS FaaS and platform services as make sense to allow you to focus on building applications rather than plumbing.

You will be part of a new, three-developer team, to deliver a modern application suite that enables companies, public sector organisations, schools and the general public to book and manage the transport they need to get their staff, students and holidaymakers to where they need to be…. think Uber™ for coaches!

Working in harmony with a devops lead, you’ll also need to lend a hand defining the Terraform based configurations, and figuring out the best methods and tech to introduce CI/CD efficiencies.

Based amongst some of your user base in our Cox Green, Maidenhead office, you will have ample opportunity for corridor testing of ideas through prototypes, whilst more formal UAT will be structured to ensure you (and we!) have the confidence your product will deliver in live.

Please note that this is not a home or remote worker role, so you must be commutable to Cox Green, however, as with all developer roles, we expect there will be a number days during each week where you simply need to stay home, get your head down and code!

About you

You’re a self-starter: a highly enthusiastic and motivated Javascript-centric developer used to adapting to and learning new technologies, design patterns and architectures as the need arises.

You love building product that people actually use and just as importantly you care passionately about quality: not just in the end product, but also in delivering code that other developers can maintain, using best-practice design principles and coding standards.

You wouldn’t dream about writing code without an accompanying test, and you treasure the DevOps principles of developers and technical operations working in harmony to embed security, scale and resilience into your continuous delivery strategy.

Teamwork means more to you than just sharing the tea-runs and buying the Haribo™  on your birthday. You actively assist and mentor your peers in their own learning, know when to ask for help yourself, and the two highlights of your sprint cycle are the planning and retrospective sessions, where you both give and take across story definition, personal recognition and constructive suggestions for improvements.

Your skills

* Javascript Expert: you know your promises from your closures and can tell the difference between your observables, prototypes and modules.

* ReactJS: if you haven’t yet, then you know you want to; and can instead demonstrate your expertise across Angular, Ember, Dojo or Vue.

* React Native: you may have only dabbled, or you may have apps already on the stores, complete with shelling out to native components and SDKs like Geolocation or NFC. Alternatively, if you’ve got some Android Java, SWIFT or ObjectiveC under your belt, then it all counts.

* AWS Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions… or NodeJS: Let’s be realistic… not every developer has worked for forward-thinking companies that know serverless is the future, so if you haven’t yet had a chance to ditch the [virtual] tin, prove to us instead that you are a NodeJS guru and can learn the modern AWS FaaS methodologies as you go.

* Redux? Webpack? Gulp? Browserify? Flux? Relay? Flow? ImmutableJS?: If you have the skills and can prove the advantage of your preferred libraries to your peers, then consensus will mean go for it (license agreement permitting).

* HTML/CSS/SASS/LESS/REST/JSON: Duh!

* TDD/BDD: we shouldn’t even have to mention it. You’ve been on Github. You know that no self respecting NPM ships without its tests. You practice what you preach and provide unto others what which you expect to consume yourself… and it’s not an afterthought.

* Terraform: if you’ve got it, we’ll take it.

* Security ingrained: You know your CAPTCHAs from your SQL injection from your brute force attacks, how to specify and develop to mitigate them, and under the covers you know your IAM from your KMS from your Secrets Manager and will layer security throughout your application stack. ...PII - encrypt it!

* English Communication Skills: you can debate your technical solutions with developers and business people alike. You won’t be expected to write War & Peace, but you will be expected to keep the development wiki comprehensible

Who We Are

HLT was sparked by paper flashcards that Alec Whitters, Co-Founder and CEO, and his peers were using to study for their dental boards. Wouldn’t it make better sense, he thought, to use their smartphones to study? When he didn’t find an effective mobile-learning solution, he decided to create it. HLT was born. Since its start in 2012, HLT has attracted millions of learners and become the market-leading platform for mLearning applications.

HLT’s rapid growth is directly attributable to their emphasis on attracting top talent and building a culture that is nationally renowned.  This includes being on Entrepreneur Magazine’s coveted “Top Company Cultures” list.

What You Will Be Doing

You will be part of the development team building our content management system(CMS) that powers our mobile and web applications.  You will get to come to work everyday knowing you are helping educate millions of people all around the world.

Who We Are Looking For

We are looking to work with the best. Our peer. Someone who learns from us as much as we learn from them. We are looking for someone bright with a proven track record in developing software for high quality, scalable applications. Someone we'll be proud to say is part of our family and who will play a large role in pushing HLT forward.

We’re not going to list 100 technologies you need to know to join our team. Through our hiring process we’ve determined that there are really only a few must-haves to pass the bar:

* You understand Computer Science fundamentals such as data structures/algorithms

* You have a passion for continuous learning and improvement

* You are a seasoned JavaScript developer and have a solid knowledge of modern JS frameworks.

Other things that are helpful to know are Vue.js, Postgres, Heroku and Rails.

How We Work

While our offices are in Coralville, Iowa, our developers work wherever they want. We just need you to be online and available via Slack during regular business hours. We're a team and we work as a team, so even if your preferred hours are the wee hours of morning, that doesn't work for us because we need a team player, not a lone wolf.

What We Pay

This is a full time position and everyone who works for us gets paid pretty darn well. In addition to medical, dental and vision insurance, we also offer 8 holidays + 3 floating paid holidays. We have always maintained a "take what you need but don't screw it up for others" stance on vacation and PTO.

How To Apply

So if you are interested in working for a great company alongside a bunch of really talented developers, building cool software with the best tools, all from the comfort of your own home then please send us:

* Your github username

* A short description of something really cool you've worked on - code or tech-related, and preferably as your own project rather than something as part of an existing job. Perhaps a web app, node package or a mobile app. Or a fun game you built. Something!

That it's. You can send us your resume too, but those things read like fiction anyway, so we're more interested in seeing the work you've done and projects that you've contributed to.

Life at HLT

Benefits

* Remote working

* Flexible hours

* Large amounts of autonomy

* Great pay, insurance, benefits

So Why HLT?

If you’re interested in

* Coming up with solutions, not just completing tasks

* Being part of a passionate team determined to improve education

* A fast paced and fun work environment

* A career with a higher purpose

Then we we would love to talk to you!

Elastic

Senior JavaScript Engineer

We have a simple goal: to solve the world's data problems with products that delight and inspire. Elastic is the leading software provider for making structured and unstructured data usable in real time for search, logging, security and analytics use cases. Since its initial release in 2012, Elastic's products have achieved more than 100 million cumulative downloads. Today thousands of organizations like Cisco, eBay, Dell, Goldman Sachs, Groupon, HP, Microsoft, Netflix, NY Times, Uber, Verizon, Yelp, and Wikipedia use the Elastic Stack, X-Pack, and Elastic Cloud to power critical systems that drive new revenue opportunities and massive cost savings. Elastic is backed by $104 million in funding from Benchmark Capital, Index Ventures, and NEA; has headquarters in Amsterdam and Mountain View, California; and has employees across 30+ countries into one coherent team, while the broader community spans across over 100 countries.

Kibana is the window into the Elastic Stack

Kibana lets users visualize their Elasticsearch data and navigate the Elastic Stack, so they can do anything from learning why they’re getting paged at 2:00 a.m. to understanding the impact rain might have on their quarterly numbers. Kibana gives users the freedom to select the way they give shape to their data. And they don’t always have to know what they’re looking for. With its interactive visualizations, users start with one question and see where it leads them. Kibana core ships with the classics: histograms, line graphs, pie charts, sunbursts, and more. They demonstrate the full aggregation capabilities of Elasticsearch.

Are you a top Javascript developer who wants to add to Kibana and X-Pack? We want to meet you!

Engineering Philosophy

Engineering a highly complex distributed system that is easy to operate via elegantly designed APIs is a non-trivial effort. It requires solid software development skills, and more importantly, a sharp mind and the ability to think like a user. We also care deeply about giving you full ownership of what you’re working on. Our company fundamentally believes great minds achieve greatness when they are set free and are surrounded and challenged by their peers, which is clearly visible in our organization. At Elastic, we effectively don’t have a hierarchy to speak of. We feel that anyone needs to be in the position to comment on truly anything, regardless of his or her role within the company.

Responsibilities

* Innovate, lead and contribute to front end and visualization experience of the Kibana and other UI products using JavaScript

* Collaborate with other development teams, quality engineering team, and documentation team to execute on product work

Skills & Requirements

* Strong JavaScript programming skills

* 7+ years of front end development work

* Experience with one modern MVC style JS Framework

* Experience writing automated tests

* Ability to work in a fast paced start-up environment

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills, a great teammate with strong analytical, problem solving, debugging and troubleshooting skills

* Strong preference for operational experience

* Strong preference for knowledge of building complex data visualization and related tooling

* Strong preference for Open Source experience

Additional Information

* Deeply competitive pay, medical, dental, vision, disability, benefits

* Stock options

* Catered lunches, snacks, and beverages in most offices

* An environment in which you can balance great work with a great life

* Passionate people building great products

* Employees with a wide variety of interests

* Your age is only a number. It doesn't matter if you're just out of college or your children are; we need you for what you can do.

* Distributed-first company with employees all over the world, speaking over 30 languages! Some even fly south for the winter :)

As part of this, we're growing the team and we're looking for another smart & passionate JavaScript developer to come on board.

Here at Noggin, we're smart and innovative yet pragmatic and we like to get elbows deep in solving some of the world's most challenging problems. We like to push technology as far as it can go and we're always looking for ways to improve. You've also had experience with Webpack (or something similar), LESS, SVG, Web Sockets, Flexible Box Model and a wide variety of libraries. Both in Berlin as well as in a remote position, we offer you...

* a small team of super smart and driven people who believe in changing things for the better.

* an informal working atmosphere based on direct communication and feedback: We believe in Slack, limited meetings and transparency.

* direct influence on anything you build: We know what we want, but if you have a better solution, we will go your way!

* an environment to grow: Learn from your team, help others around you, get and give feedback regularly and understand more than just the technical side of our business.

* lots of additional perks such as awesome team events, regular team lunches and dinners, free of choice hardware,...

We hope to find in you...

* experience in JavaScript web development proven by contribution to at least one or two projects

* a passionate developer who loves to code

Salary £65k-£70k

Are you an experienced web developer from an open source or Java/C# background wanting to cross-train into Node.js and work on large Greenfield projects?

Do you want our full support to become a truly full-stack engineer, including learning React and Redux on the front-end?

This is the role for you!

This is a UK-based role in London, with potential for 2 days remote working and 3 days int he London office.

At Concrete, we’re looking to accelerate the delivery of our product feature roadmap for our new SaaS-based platform. It’s used to connect the Head Office of retail brands to markets and stores, globally, protecting their reputation and revenue by ensuring the best shopper experience wherever a brand trades.

We need you to join us as an experienced Back-End Engineer and work closely with our Senior Engineers to ensure new features are completed at a consistent pace. We’re Agile and build, test and deploy all new Back-End features to a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline, working predominantly in Node.js and ES6+ whilst utilising a range of modern tools including Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon Web Services and MongoDB.

Working as a Back-End Engineer you will be actively building APIs using Node.js with Express.js as a framework. Day-to-day, Node, Express and ES6+ (JavaScript) will be your bread and butter letting you take full advantage of the latest features and industry practices to create new Greenfield services, ensuring that our platform remains both scalable and future-proof.

To succeed as our Back-End Engineer you will:

* Bring your experience of working in an Agile environment as a Back-End Engineer (maybe as a web developer using open source tech or as a Java/C# engineer – we don’t mind as long as you want to focus on JavaScript!)

* Write native JavaScript and have a solid technical understanding of asynchronous programming in ES6+, enabling you to discuss how promises function and, ideally, how to use them in relation to the ‘async’ and ‘await’ functions.

* Build transactional APIs and features from scratch and generally working on the API-layer, including integrating APIs into pre-existing systems.

* Know the fundamentals of NoSQL databases such as MongoDB (such as queries, creating tables and how indexing works)

* Focus on code quality including self-testing and understanding the benefits of unit testing (using e.g. Jest, Jasmine, Mocha, JUnit, or even PHPUnit), as well as relishing code reviews as a learning mechanism.

* Have some knowledge of a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) setup, including awareness of Docker and a basic understanding of DevOps skills, such as installing a Cloud server or starting a machine.

Sound intriguing…?!

We believe you should always “Stay Hungry”! As the team scales to support further platforms, services and projects coming from our pipeline, there will be a real opportunity for driven individuals to take on more senior positions within the department, including transitioning into a DevOps focused role, Technical Lead or Lead Engineer roles – whatever motivates you!

There will be regular opportunities to work on large Greenfield projects with a genuinely global reach. We have a busy project pipeline so there will be plenty of possibilities for you to really make a mark on the direction of our platforms and services, whilst gaining exposure to a wide variety of areas of the business.

Take your future in your hands and apply now to join our team!

Concrete Platform – Back-End Node.js Engineer

Location Farringdon London

Salary £65k-£70k

Benefits - We have a healthcare scheme, 25 days’ holiday and a flexible 2-day/week work-from-home policy.

The Role Concrete are looking to accelerate the delivery of our product feature roadmap for our new SaaS-based platform. To make these goals a reality we are expanding our engineering team, providing greater resources to reduce development times and enabling more projects to be worked on simultaneously.

The scrum team are responsible for building, testing and deploying all new back-end features to a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline, working predominantly in Node.js and ES6+ whilst utilising a range of modern tools including Docker, Kubernetes, Amazon Web Services and MongoDB. As work begins to ramp up, we are looking for an experienced Back-End Engineer to join our team and work closely with the Senior Engineers to ensure new features are completed at a consistent pace.

By providing an Agile induction we’ll get you up to speed very quickly and you’ll be actively involved in projects in no time, participating in team Scrum meetings and following a two-week release cycle within a Kanban work-management system.

Supporting your daily work, you will utilise a diverse range of tools and services from the cutting edge of industry adoption. Using non-relational databases such as MongoDB, you will build queries and create tables, whilst using Kubernetes and Docker when deploying your code to Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Quality is important to us, so you will take responsibility for the tech debt that you create: testing your own code and taking part in code reviews form a core part of the role. We currently use Jest for testing purpose and have a rigorous peer review process, helping to ensure that the code you create is always the highest quality possible. Once your code is signed off, you will merge it into the master branch, triggering, testing and orchestrating deployment into the Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline.

As a company, we believe in fostering a supportive environment when you need it, but otherwise take a hands-off approach, giving you autonomy over your work. There’s already a great senior team in place, that is always happy to lend a hand. There may be times when you will work in a paired-programming environment alongside another engineer, but for the most part you will work independently from the user stories and materials provided.

What we need from you You will, first and foremost, have a proven track-record in a Back-End Engineering role, working in an Agile product environment. We don’t mind whether you’ve worked as a web developer using open source tech or as a Java/C# engineer, so long as you’re excited by the prospect of moving to a JavaScript focused role moving forward.

The ability to write native JavaScript is crucial to the role, including a solid technical understanding of asynchronous programming in ES6+, enabling you to discuss how promises function and, ideally, how to use them in relation to the ‘async’ and ‘await’ functions.

You will have experience working independently, building APIs and features from scratch and generally working on the API-layer, including integrating APIs into pre-existing systems. Your level of knowledge should be sufficient to walk us through the lifecycle of a RESTful request, drawing on your own experiences and starting from the HTTP request all the way to testing end-points.

We work with MongoDB, but you don’t need direct experience. You should be able to explain why NoSQL databases would be used instead of relational databases (e.g. MongoDB/Couchbase instead of MySQL/PostgreSQL/SQL Server) We want someone who understands the fundamentals and is interested in learning more.

The ability to self-test your code will be critical to the role, so you should have a firm understanding of the benefits that this strategy brings. Your experience with testing tools (e.g. Jest, Jasmine, Mocha, JUnit, or even PHPUnit) will have left you with a strong understanding of why unit testing is important.

On top of that, you’ll also relish code reviews and recognise them as a feedback mechanism that helps both you and your team to improve.

We’ll expect you to have some knowledge of a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery (CI/CD) setup, including awareness of Docker and a basic understanding of DevOps skills.

We work in a collaborative environment and you will “Be Part of a Great Team”, so you should enjoy working closely with other team members. In particular, you must be happy to work paired with another engineer and should be able to discuss how this strategy can benefit your productivity, skills development and the integrity of the wider project itself.

Finally, at Concrete we love what we do and expect you to be fascinated by every element of your job. You will be passionate about the front-end sector, getting stuck in to technical conversations whenever possible and will always be eager to provide your opinion, viewing challenges as a learning opportunity rather than a roadblock.

What you’ll get from us A supportive and flexible learning environment, including great opportunities to gain new skills – or hone existing ones – with technologies that are rapidly becoming industry standards, particularly Node.js and the latest features of ES6 (JavaScript). You will be up-skilled as a priority with the aim to make you a truly full-stack engineer, including learning React and Redux on the front-end. We’re happy to adjust to your interests and strengths, so if you want to learn more about the front-end, Minimum Viable Products, Node.js or anything else, we’ll support you to develop those abilities, leaving you with a truly desirable skillset – after all, we believe you should always “Stay Hungry”!

By working closely with our DevOps teams, you will gain a strong understanding of the DevOps mindset, alongside hands-on experience using Amazon Web Services (AWS), Kubernetes and Docker. These skills will give you a great overview of the processes and methods required to work in a Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery pipeline, with the potential to transition into a DevOps focused role if that is desirable.

As the team scales to support further platforms, services and projects coming from our pipeline, there will be a real opportunity for driven individuals to take on more senior positions within the department, including transitioning into Technical Lead or Lead Engineer roles.

There will be regular opportunities to work on large Greenfield projects with a genuinely global reach. We have a busy project pipeline so there will be plenty of possibilities for you to really make a mark on the direction of our platforms and services, whilst gaining exposure to a wide variety of areas of the business.

We’ll trust and support you to truly take ownership of your work, providing real autonomy on the projects you work on. We’ve got your back if necessary, but you’ll be entrusted to get stuck in and put your skills, and vision, to work. We truly believe that brilliant products are built by teams that work brilliantly together; but brilliant teams can only be built with brilliant people!

## About the role
Draftable Compare is our document comparison product for individuals. Over the last year, it’s been really taking off. We are currently planning on a major new version.

You will be the technical lead for Draftable Compare. You will start by assisting in this next major release and then take over leadership. You will be working with our Product Lead and other team members to prioritize and build features.

You will also be heavily involved with developing our document comparison viewer, which is written in Javascript and used in all our products.

You will spend at least 80% of your time thinking about how to implement things and writing code.

## About you
* You have a few years of experience with both .NET (including WPF) and Javascript.
* You are a problem solver are willing to dive into Python and other code when necessary.
* You’re independent and self-reliant. You’re happy working on a task by yourself but you will take initiative to involve other team members when necessary.
* You like working close to the end-users and delivering them value.
* You have a strong awareness of efficiency and computer science fundamentals (but you don’t need to know this stuff cold like a grad).
* You appreciate the importance of clear communication, especially in a remote role.

## Work/life balance
We understand you have a life outside work and we will respect your non-working and family time. We expect engineers to work a full time load of 40 hours per week (and no more) and to be very productive during that time.

Our team is mostly remote and we prefer working with remote engineers, but also we’re also open to welcoming you into our Melbourne office.

You will have flexibility to schedule your work around your other obligations but you will usually work at a fixed time. If your work hours don’t have much overlap with Australian business hours, you will need to be flexible with scheduling meetings late at night or early in the morning.

We don’t need you to be on-call, except for when you push potentially breaking changes. Our service is very stable and we haven’t had any critical incidents that required urgent attention in the last few months.

## About our culture
We’re easy-going and easy to work with. We’re developer-led and have a flat structure. We are collaborative, and we expect you to take an active role in evolving our engineering culture. We like writing things down. We love Slack.

We launch things as soon as they’re ready. We do things right the first time, even if it takes a little longer. We don’t have much technical debt. From time to time we promise a feature to customer, but we otherwise don’t have many external deadlines.

## Some things you might be doing in your first few months
* Rewrite the comparison display code in our Desktop Compare product. Currently it uses a separate code base to our other products but we want to embed our HTML/JS Comparison viewer so that we only have to work on one code base.
* Work with our User Experience Lead on a new feature.
* Replace our ClickOnce installer with something more flexible.
* Clean up some multi-threaded code using Rx.NET.
* Assist support to address a technical issue.
* Conduct a training session via Webex with our customers’ engineers.

## About our technical stack
Our core algorithms and products are written in .NET (mostly C# with some F# and some C++). Otherwise, we have a fairly standard tech stack: Python (Django, Celery, SaltStack), React, PostgreSQL, Redis and RabbitMQ.

Apply

[Note: we are open to remote work but only if you can spend a minimum of one day per week in our Belfast office.]

THE ROLE
You’ll be the person responsible for building the front-ends to Opal, a cloud platform to create and manage Structured Documents: documents represented as data, created and managed programatically.

You'll be using JavaScript, React, HTML, and CSS to make the user experience sing. We don’t want your typical ugly enterprise app: it has to be elegant, delightful to use, and enticing during a demo.

As well as a magnificent web front-end, you’ll be working with Microsoft’s Office 365 JS API & Office Fabric to build document editing services right into the Word app.

Our clients will generally be financial firms in the world’s leading financial centers, primarily New York City and London. You may need to travel occasionally, but not often.

We don’t care about prior experience in our industry (fintech); frankly we’d love it if you came from a design agency or other non-enterprise background. We want someone to build a wonderful user experience, and you can learn about the business domain while doing so.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES
You’ll be doing some or all of the following:

* working with our product manager to refine the UI/UX requirements

* coding the front-end for the web and Office apps

* writing some basic test packs. We won’t go overboard but we aren’t flying by the seat of our pants, either

* in partnership with the CTO, the technical lead, and the rest of your team, defining and implementing standards for how we work: our agile methodology, coding standards, development tools, deployment practices, and more. This is a green field development and we want to use tomorrow’s best practices today.

WHO WE WANT
We are looking for a smart person with initiative and good judgment, who works well with others, and who will always look to balance the urgent needs of clients with the long-term technical architecture for our product.

You need to have:

* excellent verbal and written communication skills

* an eye for good design. You won’t be getting detailed wireframes, so your role will be at least partly that of a designer

* a minimum of three years’ experience using client-side web technologies with a solid knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3, preferably gained from working at a design agency or product company

* experience with ReactJS and knowledge of Node JS and webpack, as well as a unit testing framework such as Jest

* prior experience working in agile

* a pragmatic, get-it-done approach to things developers often don’t like e.g. writing tests, updating documentation, and talking to clients

* a desire to learn new things. For example, we have a Ruby on Rails API, so there is an opportunity for someone who has good front end skills to become a full stack developer.

A degree in Comp Sci or equivalent is great, but it’s not essential. It’s most important that you have good coding & design skills.

Any of these things will help you stand out:

* opinions – preferably grounded in knowledge and experience

* experience on a team that has implemented a good continuous integration strategy (or if not, an awareness of the benefits of these strategies so you can champion them within the role)

* Office 365 JS API experience would be wonderful (we know it’s a bit niche)

* experience with Bootstrap or similar – we’ll be using Office Fabric, a similar library from Microsoft

* working with RESTful API back-end components

* development of a SaaS web product

* experience working within a distributed development model i.e. with people in other locations and time zones. We’ll mostly be Belfast-based, but we may use specialists in other places such as sales engineers in London and New York.

WHAT WE OFFER

Salary is dependent on your experience and skillset. As well as the basics - competitive pay and benefits – we offer work on a greenfield product, in a small startup-like team. We’ll invest so you have good tools to work with and we’ll keep your skills up-to-date with a budget for technical books, training, and the like.

We're looking for a Javascript engineer with front-end application design experience, focused in this case around a new version of our user interface written with React, Redux, Webpack and our Javascript open source client. This is intended to be a "lightweight" application which talks exclusively to our back-end APIs for business logic, but which nonetheless has many moving parts and a lot of significant challenges in user experience design, components creation and information presentation -- the overall Platform ecosystem is complex and we are looking for a developer who is keen to solve those type of usability challenges.

Must have:

- Senior-level experience with Javascript front-end development, ideally comfortable building out a major application with React, Redux, Styled-components, Webpack, Nightwatch

- Desire to tackle user experience/interface design challenges from a high level user story view all the way to implementation

- Solid level of experience with web development patterns and the needs of engineers using a web app development & hosting tool

Nice to have:

- Familiarity with the other languages in our stack (Python, Go, PHP)

- Experience or interest in the "cloud computing" stuff that makes up our back end, anything from distributed computing to networking to devops stuff and the big box that is "make a bunch of Linux containers play nicely together"
