**Overview**\n\nThe Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana, and Beijing.\n\n**Position Summary**\n\nWe are seeking a creative and experienced individual to join the NRDC Digital Technology Team and help build websites, web applications, and hybrid mobile apps for both NRDC and its 501(c)(4) affiliate, the NRDC Action Fund. The position reports to the Digital Technology Director and will be located in New York, but we will consider another U.S. location.\n\nYou should possess a strong technical knowledge of front end systems, working with APIs, and JavaScript programing. Responsibilities include but are not limited to implementation, testing, reporting, documentation, deployment and debugging code.\n\nWe're looking for a professional who has proven front end web development experience building websites from the ground up with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Experience working with Rest APIs or GraphQL is a must. Examples of completed themes for Drupal, WordPress, or similar systems is a plus. We value strong interpersonal skills, empathy for others, the ability to work strongly in a team, a desire to help the mission of NRDC and a knack for describing technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.\n\n# Responsibilities\n * Build websites using Drupal, WordPress, Gatsby, and other possible CMS or Static Site Generators.\n* Build working static prototypes from Invision wireframes using the Bootstrap framework or similar and the NRDC design system.\n* Administer bug fixes and features to front end code across NRDC web properties.\n* Provide input on the best coding techniques or technology enhancements that can make our workflow and output more efficient.\n* Oversee code reviews of vendor work for standards compliance and efficiency of front end work. \n\n# Requirements\n**Qualifications**\n\n* Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent work experience.\n* Minimum 3 years of experience in front-end development.\n* Strong understanding of the web design and development process.\n* Strong experience managing multiple web projects at one time and meeting deadlines consistently.\n* Strong verbal and written communication skills.\n* Ability to produce quality code but also an understanding that perfection is the enemy of progress.\n* Detail-oriented and organized.\n* Experience working within waterfall and/or agile project management.\n* Ability to meet deadlines, handle and prioritize multiple simultaneous requests, manage laterally and upwards, all with a professional and courteous attitude.\n* Ability to identify and implement process and policy improvements.\n* Experience developing Mobile first Responsive UI design.\n* Experience with Bootstrap framework, SCSS and mix-ins.\n* Experience with Gulp and/or Webpack.\n* Working knowledge of RESTful web services and using APIs to create custom web applications.\n* Experience developing for modern web browsers and devices.\n* Comfortable working in a small, collaborative team environment, as well as external vendors.\n* Exhibit passion, creativity and commitment.\n\n**Desired Experience**\n\nPriority will be given to candidates with a combination of some of the following expertise:\n\n* Expert knowledge of HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript\n* Understanding of PHP in CMS like WordPress and Drupal\n* Experience with Angular, Vue, React, Node or similar JavaScript framework\n* Experience with SQL and ability to run queries, administer with Sequel Pro or similar application.\n* Experience working with Action Kit or similar platform.\n* Agency or non-profit experience preferred.\n* Familiarity with Scrum. \n\n#Location\n- 🇺🇸US-only

+ You’d be developing custom WordPress sites using PHP, CSS, Javascript and more. We are looking for a skilled, experienced developer who can tackle coding custom sites from scratch as well as creating new features and functionality for sites that you can't get with any existing plugin.\n\n+ You'd be working with our team to address technical support tickets and client requests as they come in. Flexibility, problem solving, and team collaboration are key aspects of this responsibility.\n\n+ You’d be communicating with the team regularly. We use Slack for regular communication and Basecamp for project management. There are occasionally some video chats we'll need to do either via video chat.\n\nJOB BENEFITS:\n\n+ You can work from anywhere. No moving for a job involved. If you’re happy where you are, stay there. If you’re unhappy, move somewhere new. This job will go with you. (If you want to spend a month working from the Italian countryside or in a Scottish pub, more power to you.)\n\n+ You decide what you want your hours to be for projects. For technical support, we do need someone who would be available standard East Coast time work hours (9am-ish to 6pm-ish). You will need to communicate with the team regularly.\n\n+ You get paid on a per project basis for larger projects and hourly for technical support work. \n\nSKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:\n\nYou should have a solid understanding of Wordpress, SASS, CSS, PHP and Javascript. You should have experience coding Wordpress themes.\n\nOther skills:\n\n* You know how to work with Woocommerce.\n* You're comfortable working with Advanced Custom Fields before.\n* You understand how to work with cPanels, update databases directly, and are confident migrating websites to new hosts.\n* You can troubleshoot when a site has been hacked or simply been broken by a client who has gone too far in code.\n\nThis job IS for you if:\n\n* You believe the best code is clean, simple, and well-organized.\n* You are detailed oriented and meticulous. You get letter spacing, fonts, and column widths right. And you’ll even make sure the site ends up with custom favicon.\n* You get projects done on time (or early).\n* You are honest and have no tolerance for drama.\n* You like working on projects for soulful and creative entrepreneurs.\n* You can handle a workload of at least 1-2 custom projects per month. Projects vary in length, taking anywhere between 20 and 50 hours (for a skilled developer), with some larger ones taking longer.\n* You are comfortable using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop to gather information from designs for development.\n* You can commit to the position for at least nine months (ideally, we'd love to have you with us long-term).\n\n\nOur ideal candidate is a developer who has an exacting aesthetic eye and the ability to make things so intuitive that the non savvy user can feel comfortable editing.\n\n\nThis job IS NOT for you if:\n\n* You are repeatedly late getting work done.\n* You dislike or have problems with regular communication.\n* You prefer to start out with a pre-made theme with page builders for website development.\n* You often miss details.\n* You think that a 28px margin is the same thing as a 25px margin. It’s a project that has been running since 2011, where the initial development began. The core features are creating price comparisons, by scraping webshops, primarily within the affiliate marketing industry.\n\nThe plugin is currently in it’s second version, but the development of v3 has begun, and is a rewrite from scratch, where the initial architecture has been defined.\n\nCurrently, Affiliate Plug.in only operates in Denmark, but the international potential is there, and with v3 we’re going all-in on the international approach.\n\n### TTF\nTTF is the other main project of 8-). The development has just begun a month ago, and the initial thoughts about the architecture has just begun.\n\nThe project is essentially an analysis-platform, that calculates a set of results based on a lot of user input, through a formula created on a WordPress site.\n\nThe system is a bit unusual in the WordPress sense, since we’re using MongoDB as our data storage.\n\nSo far the project is still in it’s initial phase, so you’ll have great opportunities to impact the actual architecture and development in the future.\n\n## The skill set of the ideal candidate\nWe’re looking for a person to assist and take a leading role in developing the projects, alongside our current developer (and co-founder).\n\nThe requirements for this position are:\n\n- PHP, ninja-level\n- Git\n- HTML\n- CSS\n- JavaScript\n- WordPress\n\nYou do not have to be a WordPress export, but some knowledge about how WP is build, would be preferable.\n\nAs a bonus, but not a requirement, we’d love for you to have some experience with:\n\n- MongoDB\n- LESS/SCSS\n- Building WP Plugins/Themes\n- AngularJS\n\n## The Team\nCurrently we are a team of 4 people. Lars is the original founder and developer of Affiliate Plug.in. Lasse teamed up with Lars and they founded 8-) together. Lasse has a background with online marketing.\n\nOn a daily basis, they’re working at DuGlemmerDetAldrig.dk, a danish startup which Lasse founded in 2012. Currently DGDA is a team of 11 people, whereas Lars, Leo and Jonathan are the developers and form the ‘technical team’.\n\nBoth Leo and Jonathan are also working on the TTF project at the moment, and you will be working with all 4 (Lars, Lasse, Leo and Jonathan) in your work with both Affiliate Plug.in and TTF.\n\nExtra tags: wordpress, php, javascript, html, css, less, architecture, crawling

We are looking for a designer/developer who will have two main goals:\n\n1. Brainstorm creative changes to our sites that improve traffic and performance, and then...\n2. Make those ideas happen.\n\nHe or she must be able to continually imagine new strategies — everything from the obvious to the insane — and then design them, build them, test them, report on them, and finally make them live.\n\n**Skills & experience…**\n\n*Web development.* Proficient in JS, HTML, CSS, WordPress, and PHP (optional but preferred).\n\n*A/B testing.* You know how to set up and track A/B tests that measure whether users are doing what you are predicting they do.\n\n*Design.* Proficient in the major design softwares. UX-driven.\n\n*Comfortable in Google Analytics.* You know what questions to ask regarding the effectiveness of your tests and you know where to look to get the data.\n\n*Data-driven aesthetics.* You have your design ideals, sure, but you’ll shut them down as soon as you see the numbers pointing toward a different aesthetic. If the data shows that Papyrus is the font people click on more, we use it. It hurts, we know…but it works.\n\n*Familiarity with the viral web.* You understand that even though this corner of the web is all about happy and heartwarming content, really it’s a strategy and numbers game. And you want to win.\n\n*Self-motivated.* You care enough to do something crazy. We don’t want to ask for your ideas every day. We want to tell you to chill out because you have too many ideas on your own. And when you’ve been given the green light on an idea, you drive the project forward with little need for oversight.\n\n*Cunning.* You push every boundary except ethical ones in your creative attempts to grow traffic and improve performance.\n\n*Self-learner.* When you need to know something that you don’t already, you figure it out.\n\n*Confident and personable.* You can interact well with the team, pitch your ideas, and convince the rest of us to try your crazy plans.\n\n*Idea-generation.* “Brainstorm” is too mild of a word for the insane rush of creative thought spinning around in your mind.\n\n**This role’s constant workflow…**\n\n* Have a new idea for how traffic and site performance might improve.\n* Design and develop this innovation.\n* Create and track A/B tests to see if your new idea is effective.\n* Analyze data and create a report based on the results.\n* Present the results to the team.\n* Decide with the team whether to implement the new idea.\n* Implement the proven idea on the site.\n* Manage meticulous QA.\n* Start over at step 1.\n\n\n\nExtra tags: design, development, wordpress, data, google analytics, javascript, html, css, creative, growth hacking, testing, a/b testing
