Fly.io is hiring a Remote Developer Relations Engineer JS
Weโre Fly.io, and weโre building a new public cloud. We transmogrify containers into lightweight VMs and run them on our hardware around the world โ hundreds of thousands of applications rely on us, running on every continent except Antarctica. Unlike all the rest of our roles, these roles are geographically specific; DevRel here is in large part about engaging local communities and going to in-person events. Weโre currently hiring DevRel people who can travel and work full time in North America. Quickly building proof-of-concept applications that show off cool things about Fly.io, like how quickly you can start up a new VM, or the timeless elegance of our IPv6 addressing.
Building and delivering presentations for events, presentations that have the net effect of customers (err, the developer community) liking us more. Also, having the good taste to do this in ways that are interesting even to people who might never deploy an app on Fly.io.
Talking to people working on all kinds of applications, from side projects to large teams building microservice ensembles, and talking them through making the best use of Fly.io, the Fly Machines API, our integrations with products like Supabase, that sort of stuff.
Maintaining a public presence in online communities where developers congregate, and somehow doing all of this while maintaining your own authenticity and credibility. Weโll help!

This is a fully-remote, full-time position.
In order to optimize for pay equity, Fly.io doesnโt negotiate salaries. We have standardized salaries for each employee level. The salary for this role is, depending on level, $134k or $190k USD. We offer competitive equity grants with a long exercise window. US employees get health care, everyone gets flexible vacation time (with a minimum), hardware/phone allowances, the standard stuff.

Our appโs frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in Reactย (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest and React Testing Library. We house our design system in Storybook.
We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. This means diving into lo-fi wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Figma and code.
Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.
We're looking for an experienced full-time (or part-time) Frontend Software Engineer to join our engineering team. Someone who has a solid understanding of web technologies and wants to help design, implement, and launch major user-facing features.
You should have senior level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with at least 3 years of that experience using React.
You should have significant experience designing, debugging, and optimizing frontend applications to make them fast and reliable. You have significant experience with REST APIs and thoroughly understand HTTP requests. You have experience participating in code reviews and providing overall code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase.
You should have great product sense and be able to think through user experience issues before diving into the code, and you exhibit a love for great UI.

Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP

Some things to know about our workflow
Every Monday, we have a one-on-one Zoom meeting to discuss our goals, whether you are meeting your goals, what went well, what did not go well, and so on.
You would work directly with the CEO, Simon, who trusts you with your responsibility areas and empowers you to come up with and for you to find the solutions. In other words: this role has a lot of freedom for you to work in the way that you think is best for the company. Simon and the team do not micromanage and have no interest in doing so.
Youโre also responsible for maintaining the Github repository of the project youโre working on, committing/pushing/documenting your changes, commenting on your code, and writing SOPs or technical documentation (if necessary). It doesnโt have to be pages long and can be very short and concise. But, as a developer, it makes life so much easier if you can return to your code in the future without having to think too hard about what you did. This is also about being considerate of your teammates' time.
There must be some overlap in our working hours so you can respond to urgent requests (if any) or chat with your manager or any of our departments on demand if they have an IT question. This means that some extra tasks may arise during the week.
You might have a day where one of our team members needs something urgent and needs it done the same or the next day, which can be valuable to the company, or a major issue needs to be fixed ASAP, in which case you might have to drop what you're working on and work on that. If your main project's deadline cannot be met because of this (which is understandable), you should be able to communicate this on time.
However, most of the time you are able to work on your main projects in solitary. We understand that developers need complete focus. You can also chat and ask questions in our Slack channels.
