Vox Media, LLC is hiring a
Remote Games Editor Polygon

\nPolygon is looking for a Games Editor to help shape and direct its coverage of video games. This role will manage editors and writers, edit and shape coverage, and also write occasionally as well.\n\n \nWHO WE ARE\n\nPolygon is a modern entertainment brand, covering the media that young people love. We connect our audience directly to the content they want to enjoy; to the culture and the inclusive community they want to be a part of; and to the stories and ideas they otherwise wouldnโ€™t know existed.\n\nPolygon is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. We guide our audience from discovery to obsession. We inspire essential conversations about whatโ€™s now, whatโ€™s next, and whatโ€™s possible.\n\nAs a community of journalists and storytellers, business professionals, creators and technologists, we believe it is a moral and business imperative to amplify voices: to cultivate diversity, equity, and inclusion throughout our organization and media. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.\n\n \nWHAT YOUโ€™LL DO\n\nAs Games Editor, youโ€™ll work with our Deputy Editor, Games to bring high quality video games coverage to Polygon that meets our readersโ€™ interests. Youโ€™ll find stories, vet pitches, assign work to writers and other editors, and edit coverage, which includes news, analysis, reported stories, impressions, reviews, and continuing post-release coverage. Youโ€™ll lead brainstorms and plan around big tentpole events, and find stories to delight our readers between the big releases. Youโ€™ll use data to see what coverage resonates with Polygonโ€™s audience. Youโ€™ll lead by example by writing as well.\n\nThe Games Editor also will be a linchpin in managing members of the games team, including both editors and writers. Youโ€™ll help them set and reach their own goals while also aligning with the overall demands of the Polygonโ€™s games section. Youโ€™ll also collaborate with writers and editors across our guides, culture, entertainment, curation, commerce, and video teams.\n\n \nWHO YOU ARE\n\nOur ideal candidate is an empathetic people manager with experience leading teams. Vox Media, LLC is hiring a
Remote Future Perfect Fellowship Vox.com

\nFuture Perfect covers the world through a particular prism: What are the best ways to do good in this world? What are the stories that are both important โ€” meaning they affect large numbers of people โ€” yet are undercovered by the media at large? And what are the solutions to those problems that have actual traction in the world we live in? \n\nInspired in part by the philosophy of effective altruism โ€” but not beholden to it or any other movement โ€” Future Perfect strives to shine a light on neglected stories that have, or will have, a profound impact on the lives of billions of humans and animals.\n\nSince its launch in 2018, Future Perfect has developed a loyal following for its idiosyncratic, mission-driven approach to news. Among our key subject areas include global poverty and public health, the catastrophic and existential threats that we face, and animal welfare and factory farming. We cover the philosophies and practices surrounding philanthropy and altruism, and the moral and ethical questions that underpin individual and policy choices.\n\nTrue to the name of the vertical, we constantly ask ourselves: In 10, 20, 30 years, what will we look back on and wish we devoted more time covering? Then we go ahead and do those stories today.\n\nThis fall, thanks to a generous grant, weโ€™re hiring three fellows to help us ensure Future Perfect is telling the most important stories to our audience and approaching those stories with nuance and discernment. The fellowship is a one-year, full-time position.\n\nThe Future Perfect Fellowship is a perfect opportunity for emerging journalism talent, subject-matter experts looking to move into journalism โ€” especially in our key areas, like animal welfare, AI, biotechnology and global development/health โ€” or established journalists who want to switch beats or gain expertise on a new platform. \n\nThe fellowship will be a year-long program to receive extensive training and mentorship along with opportunities above and beyond that of traditional entry-level positions. Aside from intensive feedback from editors, fellows will also have dedicated mentors, exclusive networking opportunities, skills training sessions featuring journalists from Vox Media and other outlets, and the chance to attend one professional conference per year.\n\n \nWHO WE ARE\n\nVox candidly shepherds audiences through politics and policy, business and pop culture, food, science, and everything else that matters.\n\nVox is part of Vox Media, the leading modern media company. This applies to our candidates, our teams, our storytelling, our creative work, and our platforms, products, and partnerships.\n\n \nWHAT YOUโ€™LL DO\n\n\n* Produce distinct Future Perfect content\n\n* Participate in story meetings and pitch fresh ideas\n\n* Work with editors to shape and improve content\n\n* Participate in skill shares, training, and mentorship opportunities \n\n\n\n\n \nWHO YOU ARE\n\n\n* A demonstrated passion for and familiarity with Future Perfectโ€™s areas of coverage, including global poverty and public health; climate change, pandemics, and other catastrophic threats to humanity; animal welfare; moral philosophy; effective altruism more broadly; and philanthropy. A major factor is being able to understand and articulate what makes Future Perfectโ€™s approach different from that of other verticals in subjects like climate change or health that may crossover with our material. Bonus points for demonstrated expertise or previous work in one or more of the above subjects \n\n* An interest in explanatory journalism of the kind long-practiced by Vox.\n\n* Previous newsroom experience (including college papers) or comparable experience in another field โ€” we have had great luck turning lawyers, think tank staffers, scientists and other subject-matter experts into great journalists\n\n* Tenacious curiosity and a creative approach to storytelling, including an interest in telling stories about the world through the Future Perfect lens\n\n\n\n\n \n\nIf you think you have what it takes, but don't meet every single point in our job posting, please apply with a cover letter to let us know how you believe you can bring your unique skills to the Vox Media team or get in touch! Weโ€™ve hired chefs who became editors, DJs who became UX designers, and sommeliers who became writers.\n\n \nWHERE YOUโ€™LL WORK\n\nThis job is remote. Weโ€™re dedicated to the health and wellbeing of all of our employees, and when we reopen, will require everyone who works from one of our offices to be fully-vaccinated against COVID-19. Employees with approved religious or medical exemptions may be subject to additional safety requirements, such as submitting to regular COVID-19 testing and/or wearing a face covering in our offices.\n\n \nWHY VOX MEDIA?\nWHAT WE OFFER\n\nThis is a temporary, full-time position. This job is benefits-eligible. We pride ourselves in providing comprehensive benefits to support all of our employees wherever they are in life. You can find more information about our benefits here.\n\nThis role is a part of the Vox Media Union, represented by the Writers Guild of America, East\n\n \nOUR DEI+ COMMITMENT\n\nVox Media is committed to building an inclusive environment where everyone can show up as their authentic selves and create their best work. We recognize that great stories, platforms, products and services come from people with all manner of backgrounds and experiences. We recognize that our commitments require ongoing work and sustained attention, as well as adaptation to new insights and best practices. We keep our diversity data public for the sake of accountability, transparency and communication. Learn more about our values here, and our approach to corporate citizenship here. \n\nVox Media is an Equal Opportunity Employer and qualified applicants will receive consideration without regard to race, color, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, religion, disability, national origin, protected veteran status, age, or any other status protected by applicable national, federal, state, or local law. Vox Media will also consider all qualified applicants with criminal histories in accordance with applicable Fair Chance laws. We are also committed to providing reasonable accommodations as part of the application process to candidates with disabilities. If you require a reasonable accommodation as part of the application process, please contact our People & Culture team ([email protected]).\n\n \nWHAT COMES NEXT\n\nTo apply, please submit a resume and a one-page cover letter that includes the following by December 29, 2023:\n\n\n* Describe what it is about Future Perfectโ€™s approach to covering the news that inspires you as a potential journalist, what about your experiences makes you right to join our team as a fellow, and the kind of subjects and stories youโ€™d see yourself pursuing as a fellow. \n\n* One to three previous writing samples (journalistic stories, research papers, reports, etc.). \n\n\n\n\nOur recruiting team will go through applications in a timely manner. Please note that our recruiting team will only contact you from @voxmedia.com email addresses, never via text message. Octopus Energy is hiring a
Remote Senior Backend Developer Supportsite Team

\nKraken is the technology tentacle of the Octopus Energy Group. \n\n\nAll technology is written and maintained by a multi-discipline engineering team of around 300 people globally. Our engineers work in โ€˜super teamsโ€™ which are focused on key areas of our platform as well as other innovative products. This also includes server-side, client-side and mobile engineers working closely with UX experts, copywriters and designers. \n \nTeams are empowered to choose a way of working that works for them, often opting for a Kanban-like approach. Notion and Asana are then used to specify and manage work; Github, CircleCI and Terraform Enterprise as part of an immutable-infrastructure, continuous delivery pipeline; and Datadog, Sentry and Cloudwatch to measure performance and monitor production. \n \nSome of our coding conventions are open-source . \n \nKraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills.  \n \nOur technology\nOn the server-side, we mainly use Python. Most of our websites are powered by Django, Django-REST-framework and GraphQL (Graphene).  \n \nWe use AWS heavily  as part of a continuous deployment pipeline. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery. \n \nClient-side, we use React, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.\n\n\nOur team\nOur teamโ€™s goal is to make Kraken as awesome as the Energy Specialists who use it every day. We work closely with them and our in-house designers to keep making it better and better. Beyond that, our work empowers Krakenโ€™s many backend teams to build amazing features without having to worry about CSS and JavaScript getting in their way. We do this by building our own design system, working with other teams on building new features, and ensuring Kraken is a joy to work on. All while adding new features and maintaining existing functionality.\n\n\nWeโ€™re looking for a strong backend developer with a solid understanding of Django, to help us become even more of a full-stack powerhouse.\n\n\nSo, would you like to work in a team that gets the opportunity to collaborate with others, and dip into many domains? Would you like to help shape the experience of Energy Specialists using Kraken? Would you like to help come up with the best patterns to build an awesome website, from Django templates, to React, to HTMX? Would you like to mentor Frontend devs who want to build out their skills and go full-stack, while learning a few Frontend tricks from them? Give us a shout.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll do\n* We have lots of difficult design challenges to solve. The UK utilities market is complicated, outdated and process-heavy - there's an awful lot of domain modelling that we need to get right. Strong attention to detail is essential.\n* We have challenging technical problems to solve; like processing tens of millions of meter readings a day. We need the right technology in place to handle this smoothly as well as feeding data into a machine learning pipeline that models and predicts consumption. Or thinking about how we adapt Kraken to improve other utilities like water and broadband.\n* There's a great opportunity for disruption in the UK energy market. The big suppliers still dominate, but are not exactly popular. The energy landscape is changing as we move to more dis-aggregated forms of generation, with less predictability, more dynamism and smarter technology.\n* You'll be working for a company thatโ€™s fighting climate change. Our generation arm is the largest investor in solar generation in the UK, and is funding wind and anaerobic digestion. As a supplier, we're helping people to use greener technology and renewable energy, all helping move the UK towards a lower carbon future.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll need\n* We're looking for someone with a general interest in technology and problem-solving; someone diligent and thoughtful. It would be helpful to have experience/expertise in the following (in rough priority order):\n* Python\n* Django (or equiv. web framework)\n* Domain modelling\n* HTTP and REST APIs\n* Writing robust and fault-tolerant software\n* Celery and async processing\n* Postgres\n\nPlus experience in the following would be a bonus:\n* AWS\n* Terraform, Packer, Consul\n* React and Redux\n\n\n\nWhy else you'll love about us\n* Wondering what the salary for this role is? Just ask us! On a call with one of our recruiters it's something we always cover as we genuinely want to match your experience with the correct salary. The reason why we don't advertise is because we honestly have a degree of flexibility and would never want salary to be a reason why someone doesn't apply to Octopus - what's more important to us is finding the right octofit!\n* Octopus Energy is a unique culture. An organisation where people learn, decide, and build quicker. Where people work with autonomy, alongside a wide range of amazing co-owners, on projects that break new ground. We want your hard work to be rewarded with perks you actually care about! We won best company to work for in 2022, on Glassdoor we we're voted 50 best places to work in 2022 and our Group CEO, Greg has recorded a podcast about our culture and how we empower our people \n* Visit our perks hub - Octopus Employee Benefits\n\n\n\n\n\nWe would prefer someone who can work in our London office but will consider remote candidates. However, you do need to be able to work in the UK. \n\n\nWe're very excited to be growing our team. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.\n\n\nIf this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you. \n\n\nStudies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements. Whoever you are, if you like one of our jobs, we encourage you to apply as you might just be the candidate we hire. Across Octopus, we're looking for genuinely decent people who are honest and empathetic. Our people are our strongest asset and the unique skills and perspectives people bring to the team are the driving force of our success. As an equal opportunity employer, we do not discriminate on the basis of any protected attribute. Our commitment is to provide equal opportunities, an inclusive work environment, and fairness for everyone.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n No salary data published by company so we estimated salary based on similar jobs related to Design, React, GraphQL, Django, JavaScript, CSS, Mobile, Senior and Backend jobs that are similar:\n\n $50,000 — $100,000/year\n

Monzo is hiring a
Remote Senior iOS Engineer

\n๐Ÿ“Anywhere, UK | ๐Ÿ’ฐ ยฃ80,000 - ยฃ140,000 base salary per year โž• plus stock options + Benefits \nAbout us\n\nWeโ€™re here to make money work for everyone and we're doing things differently. For too long, banking has been obtuse, complex and opaque.\n\nWe want to change that and build a bank with everyone, for everyone. Our amazing community suggests features, test the app and give us constant feedback so we can build something everyone loves.\n\nWe're focused on solving problems, rather than selling financial products. We want to make the world a better place and change people's lives through Monzo.\nAbout our mobile engineering practice\n\nOur mobile engineers have a variety of different backgrounds\n\nThere are 25 iOS engineers at Monzo and weโ€™re looking for one more to join the team. We have several non-graduates; only some of us studied Computer Science; some of us have worked in huge companies; some have only ever worked in startups; others are former consultants. As long as you enjoy learning new things, weโ€™d love to talk to you.\n\nWe are actively creating an equitable environment for all of our engineers to thrive\n\nDiversity and inclusion are a priority for us and we are making sure we have lots of support for all of our people to grow at Monzo. We provide a sponsorship framework in Engineering for women and people of colour; all of our leaders are trained on privilege awareness and we are creating partnerships with organisations dedicated to supporting underrepresented groups.\n\nWe encourage an open and transparent working environment\n\nYou can get involved in any aspect of the business you are interested in and, following Stripeโ€™s example, all emails in the company are visible in an email archive. We default to transparency and prefer to communicate openly in Slack rather than by email or in DMs. Our blog is an excellent place to learn even more about what we do!\n\nMonzo works in project-based sprints in small, interdisciplinary teams\n\nWe have 200+ engineers out of roughly 2,500 people in total - and we have big ambitions. There are many interesting challenges ahead, and we're happy for people to move between teams or to specialise, whatever you prefer. As an engineer here you'd be able to work directly with anyone across the company, and we run regular knowledge-sharing sessions so youโ€™ll learn heaps about everything from how banks work to effective communication.\nYour day-to-day\n\nWeโ€™re searching for a product-aware Senior iOS engineers with a passion for great UI and UX to join our team. You understand the need for tested, resilient code balanced against the need to move fast and iterate.\n\nYouโ€™ll be working on a product that is a part of day to day life for more than 6 million people already, and your work here will shape the way that people interact with their finances.\n\nThis role is all about collaborating across disciplines to test hypotheses and make a difference to customers. As an iOS engineer at Monzo you'll work in a small, autonomous product squad alongside Android Engineers, Backend Engineers, User Researchers, Product Designers, Product Managers, QA Testers, Data Scientists and Business Analysts.\n\nYour mission will depend on the squad, but currently mobile engineers are working on the core personal banking experience, paid products, lending products, business banking and internal operations. We also have a small squad dedicated to enabling other mobile engineers to move faster.\n\nYou and your team will be responsible for an overall company goal, rather than building a specific feature - you'll have the opportunity to have impact on both what we build, and how we build it.\n\nEvery week we meet as a discipline to discuss tools, techniques, problems we're encountering across the company and work together to improve our codebase and processes.\n\nYou'll report to an engineering manager who will meet with you every 2 weeks 1:1, their mission is to help you develop and grow as an engineer.\nOur iOS app\n\nAt Monzo, you'll get to work with industry standard tools and technologies - and help us define what great looks like for iOS engineers.\n\nOur app is 100% Swift, built using a Model, View, View-Model architecture (MVVM). We use Coordinators to ensure we can re-use screens wherever possible, and avoid tightly coupling one screen to another. We make heavy use of protocols and extensions throughout our app.\n\nOur networking stack is built upon Alamofire, using a generic interface to easily de-serialise objects of a certain type, and we mirror our backend micro-service architecture by building individual services to house our API logic.\n\nWe persist objects using Realm when we need to.\n\nOur testing stack comprises of unit tests for business logic, stubbed API tests for pseudo-integration tests, snapshot tests for UI, and XCUITest for testing user input and sequencing.\n\nWe've published some talks and blog posts about how we work:\n\n\nWorking with backend services on iOS\n\nPushing Protocols to their Limits\n\nThe Release Mindset (how we release our apps)\n\n\n\nYou should apply if\n\nOur open roles are for Senior iOS Engineers at present.\n\n\nYou'll care about the impact your work has on our customers, and optimise for impact rather than the number of lines of code you output\n\nYou are excited about and have experience in programming in Swift\n\nYouโ€™ve shipped and iterated on at least one app in the App Store\n\nYou have a product mindset: you care about customer outcomes and you want to make data-informed decisions\n\nYou love turning excellent design into beautiful products\n\nYouโ€™re comfortable working in a team that deals with ambiguity\n\nYou have an understanding of the principles of computer science\n\n\n\nThe interview process\n\nOur interview process consists of a 45 min initial call video interview, a take-home code test followed by a 45 min video call with an engineer to discuss it, and 2 hours of final interviews conducted via video call as well. The final rounds consists:\n\n1h iOS technical\n\nYou'll meet 2 other iOS engineers. Together we'll go over some technical challenges we've faced as a company. We'll ask you to come up with designs to solve these problems, and we'll ask you questions about your experience using Swift in production.\n\n1h Behavioural\n\nYou'll meet 2 Monzonauts to chat about some of the non-technical parts of being a product engineer at Monzo. These include your experience in delivery, team work, coaching/mentoring and persuasion.\n\nAt each stage you'll have an opportunity to ask us questions about what life is like at Monzo. \n\nWe promise not to ask you any brain teasers or trick questions. We might design a solution together on a whiteboard, the same way we often work together, but we wonโ€™t make you write code on one.\n\n\nOur average process takes around 3-4 weeks but we will always work around your availability. You will have the chance to speak to our recruitment team at various points during your process but if you do have any specific questions ahead of this please contact us on [email protected] \n\nOne of our Hiring Managers has written a detailed blog on our process, for extra details, hints and tips please see this blog post.\nWhat's in it for you\n\n๐Ÿ’ฐ ยฃ80,000 - ยฃ140,000 base salary per year โž• plus stock options & benefits, we also provide all of our engineers with the latest MacBook Pro (M1 Pro).\n\nโœˆ๏ธ We can help you relocate to the UK \n\nโœ… We can sponsor visas but please note we aren't able to support remote working outside of the UK at the moment\n\n๐Ÿ“ This role can be based in our London office, but we're open to distributed working within the UK (with ad hoc meetings in London)\n\nโฐ We offer flexible working hours and trust you to work enough hours to do your job well, at times that suit you and your team\n\n๐Ÿ“š Learning budget of ยฃ1,000 a year for books, training courses and conferences\n\nโž• And much more, see our full list of benefits here\n\nIf you prefer to work part-time, we'll make this happen whenever we can - whether this is to help you meet other commitments or strike a great work-life balance.\nEqual Opportunity Statement\n\nWe are actively creating an equitable environment for every Monzonaut to thrive.\n\nDiversity and inclusion are a priority for us and we are making sure we have lots of support for all of our people to grow at Monzo. At Monzo, embracing diversity in all of its forms and fostering an inclusive environment for all people to do the best work of their lives with us.
