Fly.io is hiring a Remote Developer Relations Engineer JS
Weโre Fly.io, and weโre building a new public cloud. We transmogrify containers into lightweight VMs and run them on our hardware around the world โ hundreds of thousands of applications rely on us, running on every continent except Antarctica. If you havenโt already, take us for spin. Your app will be up and running in just minutes.
Unlike all the rest of our roles, these roles are geographically specific; DevRel here is in large part about engaging local communities and going to in-person events. Weโre currently hiring DevRel people who can travel and work full time in North America. Of course, our whole thing is that we deploy everywhere else in the world, too, so weโll be expanding from there soon.
There are a lot DevRel jobs where you have to make your own fun, because the product is about eliminating some gnarly business slog like inventory management or expense tracking or underwriting. Weโre not knocking those jobs! Thereโs nobility in eliminating slogs!
But this isnโt one of those jobs. Weโre doing something big, something thatโs about software development itself. Weโre one of a number of upstart companies rethinking the public cloud, breaking down infrastructure problems that used to take months of work and dedicated headcount into a platform that our users can gain fluency with in a matter of minutes. If youโre our kind of developer, the fun in this job is built-in.
Weโre looking for people who are passionate about JavaScript. On the client, on the server, or even on the microcontroller. Whatever framework you like: we support you, even though we still donโt understand how you can know what `this` is.
Folks working in DevRel at Fly.io interact with three different groups of people:
Group A: our product teams, like in every other devrel job: the people building the platform and its features.
Group B: our โframeworkโ teams, which are a fun quirk of Fly.io: these are small teams of people organized around individual application frameworks like Rails, Django, Phoenix, and whatever people are doing in Javascript these days.
Group H: the โdeveloper communityโ, a term the industry uses because it is apparently squicked out by the word โcustomerโ.
As a DevRel engineer here, your whole deal would be connecting the groups, per this schematic diagram:
Youโll accomplish this by deploying all of your โskills of an artistโ, hopefully including things like:
Quickly building proof-of-concept applications that show off cool things about Fly.io, like how quickly you can start up a new VM, or the timeless elegance of our IPv6 addressing.
Building and delivering presentations for events, presentations that have the net effect of customers (err, the developer community) liking us more. Also, having the good taste to do this in ways that are interesting even to people who might never deploy an app on Fly.io.
Talking to people working on all kinds of applications, from side projects to large teams building microservice ensembles, and talking them through making the best use of Fly.io, the Fly Machines API, our integrations with products like Supabase, that sort of stuff.
Maintaining a public presence in online communities where developers congregate, and somehow doing all of this while maintaining your own authenticity and credibility. Weโll help!
25% monthly travel (focusing on small local meetups to medium sized conferences) to hang with developer communities in person to build authentic developer interest in various regions and communities.
This Role Is A Good Fit For You If:
You enjoy building applications and are particularly psyched about the prototyping phase of building things, because thereโs going to be a lot of that here.
The idea of a little bit of chaos appeals to you, because itโs a sign to you that thereโs an opportunity to help define a new practice and make some big moves.
Youโre opinionated enough to be interesting, but exceptionally good at listening, empathizing, and rolling with the opinions of our users. Thatโs a hard tradeoff and not a lot of us here can do it!
Your career goals involve increasing your public profile. We punch above our weight in getting attention from developers, and your job here would be part of building and expanding on that.
Going to a bunch of different developer events sounds like a good time to you. We are focused on in-person events as our strategy.
Youโll Know Youโre Succeeding If:
The numbers are going up and to the right (or youโve built a time machine and can make the numbers go left).
More JavaScript apps are launched on Fly.io.
Youโre involved in helping systematize our content development past blog posts and documentation and into a library of different kinds of content to connect with people at different phases of their use of the product, and youโre seeing results.
Youโre comfortable with how Fly.io intersects with all the major app frameworks and can effectively talk people through solving problems, and when you do that, the result is that people are excited to use us.
More Details
This is a fully-remote, full-time position.
In order to optimize for pay equity, Fly.io doesnโt negotiate salaries. We have standardized salaries for each employee level. The salary for this role is, depending on level, $134k or $190k USD. We offer competitive equity grants with a long exercise window. US employees get health care, everyone gets flexible vacation time (with a minimum), hardware/phone allowances, the standard stuff.
Our hiring process may be a little different from what youโre used to. We respect career experience but we arenโt hypnotized by it, and weโre thrilled at the prospect of discovering new talent. So instead of resumes and interviews, weโre going to show you the kind of work weโre doing and then see if you enjoy actually doing it, with โwork-sample challengesโ. Unlike a lot of places that assign โtake-home problemsโ, our challenges are the backbone of our whole process; theyโre not pre-screeners for an interview gauntlet. (Weโre happy to talk, though!)
If youโre interested, mailย [email protected]. You can tell us a bit about yourself, if you like. Please also include 1. your location, 2. your GitHub username, and 3. your favorite industry euphemism for โcustomerโ, so we know youโre not a bot.
Please mention the word INFALLIBLE when applying to show you read the job post completely (#RMy4xMzguMTc1LjE4MA==). This is a feature to avoid fake spam applicants. Companies can search these words to find applicants that read this and instantly see they're human.

About Us
Close is a bootstrapped, profitable, 100% remote, ~90 person team of thoughtful individuals who value autonomy and impact. Weโre eager to make a product our customers fall in love with over and over again.
We โค๏ธ startups & SMBs. Since 2013, weโve been building a CRM ย that focuses on better communication, without the hassle of manual data entry or complex UI. Our goal: double the productivity of every sales rep.
Our appโs frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in Reactย (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest and React Testing Library. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSSย (withย flexbox and grid layout) using CSS modules and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC. We house our design system in Storybook.
We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. We sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with the Product team throughout the design process. This means diving into lo-fi wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Figma and code.
Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.
We're looking for an experienced full-time (or part-time) Frontend Software Engineer to join our engineering team. Someone who has a solid understanding of web technologies and wants to help design, implement, and launch major user-facing features.
You should have senior level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with at least 3 years of that experience using React.
You should have significant experience designing, debugging, and optimizing frontend applications to make them fast and reliable. You have significant experience with REST APIs and thoroughly understand HTTP requests. You have experience participating in code reviews and providing overall code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase.
You should have great product sense and be able to think through user experience issues before diving into the code, and you exhibit a love for great UI.
Youโre comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a small and talented team where you're supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively and collaborate in a fully distributed team.
You are physically located in the United States.
We are open to hiring mid, senior and staff level engineers for this role.
Bonus points if you have...
Experience implementing real-time (e.g. websockets, polling, etc.) web apps
Experience working with GraphQL endpoints
An eye for design and experience with Figma, Sketch, Abstract, Photoshop, or similar
Led small project teams building and launching features
Contributed open source code (core or plugins) for a popular frontend framework such as React, Vue, or Angular
Built B2B SaaS products
Experience with sales or sales tools
Come help us with projects like...
Conceiving, designing, building, and launching new user-facing features
Working with Twilio's API, WebSockets, and WebRTC to improve ourย calling features
Building user-facing analytics features that provide actionable insights based on sales activity data
Improving real-time collaboration user experience
Expanding our frontend GraphQL usage
Extending our React component library

How We Work Together
Productivity, Quality & Impact: We donโt track hours. We trust youโre an adult and know best how to prioritize, meet your goals and contribute at a high level.ย
Asynchronous communication & collaboration: We have team members all over the world. We donโt expect anyone to work untraditional hours, that means our default is async. Most teams have 2-5 hours of internal meetings weekly.ย
Appreciation for Deep Work: *During your normal work day, not after a day of meetings*.ย
Autonomy & Freedom: Create a work environment that is sustainable for you. We place a high amount of trust and responsibility with our team members from the start.ย
Working from 22+ countries, weโre a collection of talented humans rich in diverse backgrounds, lifestyles, and cultures. Close has been 100% remote since 2016, creating an intentional workplace around asynchronous communication and collaboration. Every year we meet up somewhere around the world to spend time with one another. These gatherings are an opportunity to strengthen the relationships within our global community.
We practice a mature approach to the workplace -- manage your time effectively, communicate thoughtfully with your teammates and customers, and produce high quality work. We have impressive tenure amongst the team; we stay at Close because we love working with our colleagues, we appreciate the autonomy and we thrive in an environment that challenges us to do our best work.
Unanimously, our favorite value is โBuild a house you want to live in.โ We make decisions that are rooted in helping our customers become more successful. We care equally about the health of our business and the wellbeing of our people.ย
Our application process was designed to promote equitable and unbiased hiring practices. We ask a small series of questions that are similar to what would be asked in the first interview. This helps us learn more about you right from the start so please be sure to answer each question thoughtfully. Each application will receive two screens by two different reviewers. Regardless of fit, you will hear back from us letting you know if we'll be moving forward.

This job post is closed and the position is probably filled. Please do not apply. Work for Pangolia and want to re-open this job? Use the edit link in the email when you posted the job!
(btw, here's a quick video that explains the position: https://youtu.be/s8aW66ZB8_o?feature=shared) ๐ Are you a talented web developer who loves WordPress? And do you get excited about building new features that will be used by millions of pet lovers every month? Then this could very well be the opportunity for you!
Weโre Pangoliaโone of the fastest-growing pet companies, and weโre on a mission to create the biggest, most helpful pet company in the world. Our largest sites: Catster.com, Dogster.com, Hepper.com, and PetKeen.com are visited by more than 60 million pet lovers every year, and weโre undergoing rapid growth.
Our media sites are all built on WordPress, and our own cat furniture e-commerce brand, Hepper, is running on WooCommerce.
In this position you would be the lead web developer, which will consist of fixing the issues that come up, proactively keeping our sites secure, and building new things.
Weโre a 100% remote company so youโd have the freedom to work from anywhere. It's a full-time position (40 hours a week), yet you get to plan your own schedule and work whenever you want. You will become an integral member of our team at Pangolia consisting of a diverse group of more than 80 talented individuals from all over the world, joining us on our united goal of building the biggest, most helpful pet company in the world.
๐ Note: weโre a fast-paced kickass team with very high expectations of ourselves and each other, and we work really hard. The webdev department needs to become kickass, so this position will definitely require working on some weekends.
๐ป Weโre looking for a fullstack developer. However, for this position, it is much more important to be great at backend coding than frontend design. Our sites already look great on the front end, but itโs mainly on the back end where a lot of work needs to be done. (we also have graphic designers on our team)
๐ฌStrong communication and team collaboration skills are a MUST. We're a remote company, so great communication is a fundamental part of making the company thrive.
โ> All in all, this is a great opportunity if youโre an amazing developer looking to rapidly grow your skills whilst working alongside peers who are at the top of their field.
Big projects in front of us right now:
1. Make Catster.com, Dogster.com, PetKeen.com, and Hepper.com the fastest loading websites when compared to our competitors, and have fewer display ads than the competition. 2. Build out the Hepper.com e-commerce experience: revamping checkout pages, category pages, product listings, and making sure that data analytics on Hepper is properly configured. 3. Clearing the big backlog of tasks that has piled up over the last couple of months. We are behind, and we have lots to do, so itโs important that you hit the ground running!
4. In this role, you would over the next 3-4 months hire 1-2 developers in your department. So, itโs crucial that youโre excited about managing, inspiring, and doing code reviews with other developers too.
You will be responsible for
Making the webdev department kickass: catching up with the backlog of tasks, and being an amazing communicator.
After 3-4 hiring months: hiring 1-2 web developers who will work under you. Itโs therefore important you are excited about hiring, managing, and doing code reviews with developers. We can help teach you the skills to hire and manage developers, though, you must be excited about this for this to work.
Developing new tools and software that help millions of pet lovers every month (could for example be to develop a Puppy Weight Chart Tool / Calculator that helps pet owners predict how fast, and how big their dog will grow)
Developing, testing, and maintaining new features and solutions for our WordPress sites for desktop and mobile browsers that are optimized for high traffic.
Create, review, and update technical documentation such as contributing to our development processes, QA procedures, and technical planning
Communicating and supporting our content and marketing departments with dev/IT requests, troubleshooting, fixing bugs
Performing scheduled and non-scheduled maintenance and security updates on our WordPress sites
Always proactively being on top of things and securing and protecting our WordPress sites from hackers and malware, as well as eliminating risks
Be informed of relevant new technology and best practices
You are expected to have:
Experience with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/jQuery, and PHP
Experience with MySQL and managing databases
Experience with WordPress development (e.g. themes, hooks, filters, plugin API, etc)
Experience with build tools like Webpack or ViteJS
Experience with Composer and a basic understanding of autoloading, dependency management, and dependency injection
Experience with SSH and comfortable with basic terminal usage
Experience with Git (and GitHub)
Troubleshooting abilities (ie include finding CSS and JavaScript conflicts using browser developer tools, navigating codebases in theme and plugins, and determining whether a plugin or theme code could be causing a code conflict)
The ability to take a project on your own and get it done before the deadline
Strong communication skills. This is a MUST as we work remotely. (most of our communication is written in Slack with occasional calls)
The Type of Person We Would Love For This Role
โ> You are a dependable, friendly communicator
โ> Youโre passionate about solving problems with smart and elegant programming solutions. Your code is clean, understandable, and well-commented
โ> Youโre a self-starter who loves taking initiative and seeing things through to completion.
โ> You have the curiosity and desire to learn and grow your skills and discover new modern practices and follow the latest trends in WordPress
โ> Youโre able to juggle around and work on different projects and side tasks on a weekly basis. While we wish we could focus on one thing for weeks at a time to make it perfect, thatโs often not the reality in a competitive market.
Benefits/Perks when working at Pangolia
๐ Work from anywhere (weโre 100% remote)
๐ก Work with a hard-working, talented team of kickass people
๐ Flexible work hours, you get to plan your own schedule and work whenever you want
๐ด Company retreats! (we just did a company retreat in Phuket, Thailand!)
๐ฐ Your payment is paid biweekly (Youโre paid every two weeks)
๐ป We encourage you to find a working environment that suits your needs the best if working from home every single day isnโt for you. (Weโll cover monthly membership and/or day passes for co-working spaces.) โฑ๏ธ 21 days of paid time off every year
๐ค Your work with a great, talented team that produces a high-growth work environment (we move fast)
๐ Opportunity to move up in the company, and earn higher pay and bonuses
Some things to know about our workflow
Every Monday, we have a one-on-one Zoom meeting to discuss our goals, whether you are meeting your goals, what went well, what did not go well, and so on.
You would work directly with the CEO, Simon, who trusts you with your responsibility areas and empowers you to come up with and for you to find the solutions. In other words: this role has a lot of freedom for you to work in the way that you think is best for the company. Simon and the team do not micromanage and have no interest in doing so.
Youโre also responsible for maintaining the Github repository of the project youโre working on, committing/pushing/documenting your changes, commenting on your code, and writing SOPs or technical documentation (if necessary). It doesnโt have to be pages long and can be very short and concise. But, as a developer, it makes life so much easier if you can return to your code in the future without having to think too hard about what you did. This is also about being considerate of your teammates' time.
There must be some overlap in our working hours so you can respond to urgent requests (if any) or chat with your manager or any of our departments on demand if they have an IT question. This means that some extra tasks may arise during the week.
You might have a day where one of our team members needs something urgent and needs it done the same or the next day, which can be valuable to the company, or a major issue needs to be fixed ASAP, in which case you might have to drop what you're working on and work on that. If your main project's deadline cannot be met because of this (which is understandable), you should be able to communicate this on time.
However, most of the time you are able to work on your main projects in solitary. We understand that developers need complete focus. You can also chat and ask questions in our Slack channels.
The team (and our work culture)
Youโll get to be part of a 100% remote company consisting of a diverse group of 80 talented individuals from all over the world. The people you will find on the team are veterinarians, marketers, content writers, editors, social media managers, graphics designers, content managers, and a lot more.
And youโll get to join us on our united mission of improving the lives of pets and those who care for them. We dream big, and our mission is to become the biggest, most helpful pet company in the world.
Youโll get to be part of a company thatโs undergoing hyper-growth, and the fast-paced work environment that comes with it.
And weโve managed to grow at a healthy pace without ever sacrificing our culture and values.
Our company culture is focused on work and collaboration, but also being open to the casual humor and chatter that makes us get to know each other.
We value the freedom of being able to work from anywhere, trust, and collaboration.

Internet Game is inspired by innovative projects that combined social apps with gaming, like Pokemon Go and HQ Trivia. We take the highly social aspects of AAA games like Fortnite and apply them to casual games that anyone can play.
We launched as an experiment back in March 2022. 8000 players battled through 5 mini-games across 5 days, elimination-style (inspired by Squid Game). Those still in at the end won huge prizes.
Since then, we've raised $7M and expanded our fully-remote team to 18 people.
Now we're building out our platform to allow anyone to play our ever-growing library of mini-games.
Our mission is to create new ways for the world to play together.

Make a difference in the lives of 1,000s of ethical hackers by designing and building the tools they need.
Product designers at Security Roots are always working on different things. You may be working on polishing up an existing feature, implementing a design with HTML/CSS, pitching something brand new, or fundamentally rethinking how we do something.
Our tool, Dradis Framework, is used by 1,000s of hacking experts in 44 countries around the world. We're looking for folks who like to solve problems and build a business and product that people genuinely love to interact with.
We're small, self-funded, profitable, and have beenย in business for 12 years.
In this role, you will learn a ton and be part of a small, global, and user-centered company. You'll have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of 100s of ethical hackers. Plus, as a small team, you will have a lot of choice about what to work on, and there are still a lot of untapped opportunities for you to grow as the company does.
What we offer and what we are looking for:
You'll be a trusted and key member of our team, and this is (some of) what you'll end up doing on a day-to-day basis:
Pitching and designing new features to improve the experience for our users.
Implementing your designs in code, while working closely with the rest of our team. You must write well-structured HTML/CSS.
Discovering opportunities to enhance and improve our design & development process.
Improving our existing products and internal systems. We want to learn from you as you learn from us.
Prioritizing and deciding what features we should tackle next.
Our stack:
Rails 6 (although we started with Rails 1.2 in 2007)
We're looking for a solid Product Designer with ยซadequateยป experience who is comfortable in a 100% distributed team and is self-driven.
This is a full-time position for the right candidate and it has an immediate start date.ย Work 100% remotelyย on a flexible schedule withย reasonable overlap with EU business hours.
About you
Ideally, you've held a remote position before, or you've held a similar position of responsibility in a traditional organization but now are looking to improve your work-life balance.
You are a well-rounded individual, work is not everything in life, you may have a family and social life. You work hard when it's work time and areย able to switch offย when it isn't.
You don't think of yourself as a "UI Designer", or a "Web Designer" or a "Front End developer". You're an individual that can bring it together. Someone who loves Getting Real.
You must write well-structured HTML/CSS. Basic Javascript or Rails skills are a plus, but not required. A background in Information Security wouldn't hurt either.
You're comfortable communicating with others verbally and in writing.ย Our team is spread across the world, and so are our users.
You are organized, like to be on top of your responsibilities, and don't let things slip through the cracks. You will be sure to include the name of your favorite tv series as part of your application.
You believe in giving back to the community.ย We startedย with an open-source project and to this day we remain firm believers of open-source and giving back. A lot of what you will be creating with the team will be released as open-source.
Benefits of working with us
Work anywhereย - We're 100% remote.
Flexible work hoursย - Provided you have reasonable overlap with the team (roughly within US/EU business hours).
Great salaryย - You will be making more than others in your region.
Flexible vacationย - Take time off when you need it, we trust you (no less than 4 weeks each year).
No external pressuresย - Our users are king, we do what's best for them. We're self-funded, and don't have any investors, so we can make the right decisions for our customers without worrying about artificial deadlines or financial targets.
Autonomyย - You will be given a lot of freedom to do what you think is right, without needing to explain every decision.
Meaningful workย - You will take initiative and ownership to see things through to completion. We won't micro-manage you. And your work will be measured by your results.
You'll be working in the two greatest markets in the world these days...ย Softwareย &ย Security.
You will have great hardware and tools to work with.

About Us
Close is a bootstrapped, profitable, 100% remote, ~70 person team of thoughtful individuals who value autonomy and impact. Weโre eager to make a product our customers fall in love with over and over again.
We love startups & SMBs. Since 2013, weโve been building a CRM that focuses on better communication, without the hassle of manual data entry or complex UI. Our goal: double the productivity of every sales rep.
Our appโs frontend is a single-page TypeScript web app mostly written in React (originally built with Backbone.js). Our mobile app is built using React Native. We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Jest, React Testing Library, and Playwright. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSS (with flexbox and grid layout) using CSS modules and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC.ย
We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. Our product development process is inspired by Shape Up.
We're looking for an experienced full-time Frontend Engineering Manager to join our engineering team and build & lead the 3rd Frontend team. You should be an empathetic leader, have spent part of your career as a senior-level engineer, and want to help build & grow a team of high-performing engineers.
You should have senior-level (4 years+) experience building modern frontend applications, preferably using React or similar framework.
You should have significant experience (2 years+) leading and growing a team of engineers. You enjoy helping engineers thrive and grow in their roles. You should have a very good idea of how to run 1:1s with your direct reports and how to form strong relationships. You should be comfortable with giving continuous feedback and doing performance reviews. You are expected to grow the team as-needed and help lead a hiring process.
You have a track record of managing engineering teams that delivered great products and features. You should be very comfortable working with the Product and Design teams to formulate product ideas, skilled at writing & reviewing technical specifications, and planning work for your team. You can take on non-critical path technical work if time allows.ย
Youโre comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a medium-sized talented team where you're supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively, and collaborate in a fully distributed team.
You are physically located in the United States.
Bonus points if you have...
Experience practicing theย Shape Up product development methodology
Experience scaling a small engineering team into a few teams
Experience building JS-based mobile apps
Built B2B SaaS products
Experience with sales or sales tools
About the Role
Manage and grow a team of 4-6 high-performing engineers (US and EU timezones), support them through 1:1s and continuous feedback, and empower their career growth.
A mix of team leadership, people management, product ideation, project coordination, and maximum 10% of your time spent on non-critical path IC work.
Work with a team of mostly-senior engineers, product managers, and designers to deliver great features.
Manage and optimize development processes as the team grows.
Participate in formulating a long-term frontend strategy.

How We Work Together
Productivity, Quality & Impact:ย We donโt track hours. We trust youโre an adult and know best how to prioritize, meet your goals and contribute at a high level.ย
Asynchronous communication & collaboration:ย We have team members all over the world. We donโt expect anyone to work untraditional hours, that means our default is async. Most teams have 2-5 hours of internal meetings weekly.ย
Appreciation for Deep Work:ย *During your normal work day, not after a day of meetings*.ย
Autonomy & Freedom:ย Create a work environment that is sustainable for you.
