Shopify is hiring a Remote Senior Software Development Manager

**Company Description**\n\nShopify is now permanently remote and working towards a future that is digital by default. \n\nShopify is the leading cloud-based, multi-channel commerce platform. Merchants can use the software to design, set up, and manage their stores across multiple sales channels, including web, mobile, social media, marketplaces, and brick-and-mortar locations. The platform also provides merchants with a powerful back-office and a single view of their business. Shopify was engineered for reliability and scale, making enterprise-level technology available to businesses of all sizes. Shopify powers over 1,000,000 businesses in over 175 countries — and here’s how we’ve been helping more merchants survive, thrive, and navigate the impacts of COVID-19.\n \nShopify is on a fast-moving mission to make the best products for merchants, buyers, and partners around the globe. \n \nIntrigued? That’s great! We’re looking for Senior Software Development Managers to join our team, and maybe you’re the person we’re looking for!\n\n**Job Description\nYou’ll be working on things like:**\n\n* Managing several teams and helping them prioritize, build and ship the most impactful features to our merchants and community of developers.\n* As a member of the product area leadership, build a composite roadmap that reflects the priorities in the different areas and continuously rebalance the teams to react to changes in the surrounding conditions.\n* Work on problems with your teams, roll up your sleeves, form an opinion and advocate for engineering-specific roadmap items.\n* Work with product, UX and other disciplines to discover the best solutions for our merchants.\n* Grow a team of teams both through internal development and helping with external hiring.\n\n**Qualifications\nQualities you likely have to be well suited to this role:**\n\n* Proven technical leadership skills using technologies and frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Java/JEE, Node.js, ReactJS, PHP or Python.\n* Familiarity with distributed and highly available systems at scale.\n* A strong technical foundation. You feel comfortable diving into the code and interacting with developers at all levels of seniority.\n* Experience designing and developing APIs.\n* Proven leadership skills. Your management skills and technical depth allows you to develop and mentor others as well as build credibility with your team while executing broader engineering strategies.\n* You are comfortable working with senior stakeholders (Director level and up), both technical and non technical.\n* You have successfully built and grown large teams of engineers during your career.\n* A commitment and drive for quality, technical excellence and results.\n\n**Bonus Points:**\n\n* Domain experience in eCommerce, shipping & logistics, or financial services is ideal but not necessary for versatile engineering leaders who are strong in their craft.\n* You have experience building your own app(s) on platforms like Shopify.\n\n**Additional information\nHere's how to apply:**\n\nWe know that looking for a new role can be both exciting and time-consuming, and we truly appreciate your effort. Jane is an actual real live person (👋🏻) and is looking forward to learning more about you through your application. And remember, we want to know what you're really interested in building and why you want to build it at Shopify, so please give us as much detail on this as you'd like in the answers on the next page. 👍 📖\n\nAt Shopify, we are committed to building and fostering an environment where our employees feel included, valued, and heard. Our belief is that a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion enables us to truly make commerce better for everyone. # Role\nWe are looking for a passionate Backend Engineer that wants to own and help shape our microservices architecture. The main responsibility for this role is to produce high quality code that is robust, including designing data models for scalability and performance.\n \nOne area our application is growing into is Documents management, so having previous experience in similar problems areas, like revision and approval workflows, auditing of projects, access control levels (ACL) is a big plus for this position.\n\nPrevious experience on managing projects and leading a team of developers is a prerequisite for this role. You will be working as part of a small and highly effective 100% remote team, taking part in major technical decisions, defining technical requirements, scoping and helping to create new features for our Bimsync application with the team. \n\nAs one of the lead developers in the team, you are expected to have a good structural thinking, being able to break-down complex problems into smaller parts that can be delivered to production independently in a timeboxed fashion. \n# What we are looking for\nWe believe in a growing and learning mindset, where people will be up to face a new challenge and learn a new technology when needed. Thus, having the right skills and a positive attitude to learning is more important for us than the degree. A BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related subject is important, as we value an understanding of the fundamentals, but it’s not a prerequisite.\n\nWe define ourselves as an agile company, so being open for feedback and adapting to change is core to being a good fit to our team. Our company's working language is English, so we expect all candidates to effectively communicate (written and spoken).\n\nAs a lead developer, you are expected to be an excellent communicator, able to consider different points of view (Product, Sales, other devs) and manage these expectations in order to settle and deliver on a plan.\n\nYou should have a very good understanding of backend technologies and the different challenges of creating backend services that are cloud native, having previously developed applications in the public cloud (AWS preferably). We expect a strong intimacy with Java, as most of our backend stack is written in this language. We also look for proficient knowledge of databases, both SQL and NoSQL, to tune and shape the best data structures for each specific microservice. Another important point is having familiarity with REST APIs and a good understanding of backwards compatibility for public APIs. An interest and an ability to fix and contribute to the frontend React code is a bonus point for this position.\n\nThis position is open for fully remote, but has a requirement of being located in the EU.\n# What we offer\nYou will be part of an amazing journey to transform the construction industry with a bold and caring team. Along this path, we will challenge each other, have difficult open conversations and develop, as we learn.\n\nIn addition to the above, we will also take care of you and provide you with the right challenges for growth. Some of our benefits:\n\n* Paid time off (25 vacation days per year)\n* Flexible working hours\n* Full remote possible\n* Share options program\n* Company gatherings twice a year (in person when possible again)\n\n# Location\n**EU**\n\n# About Catenda\nCatenda is a Norwegian scale-up company with a global ambition to make the construction industry data-driven, with less waste and greater transparency along the way.\n\nOur company values are: Openness and Quality.\n\nWe believe in open standards for all our customer data to achieve interoperability between applications, from inception, through design and construction onto the maintenance of a building. Another core belief is that our customers should have full control over their data: all data that goes in, can also be exported out.\n\nWe value quality of the code and the product by working as a tight and effective distributed development team, preferably asynchronously, often sharing screens to collaborate. Catenda has offices in Oslo and Bergen, composed by an international team of 10+ nationalities working remotely across the EU.\n\nOur solution, Bimsync, is a cloud-based collaboration platform, consisting of a web application, a mobile application and our APIs. Many companies across the world are using our products to build better airports, hospitals, stadiums, homes and roads.\n\nOur technology stack runs 100% on AWS, using the most appropriate technology for the problem at hand. Our backend is mostly in Java and we are currently using different managed databases in our backend, like PostgreSQL, MySQL and DocumentDB. Our frontend is in Javascript, using React and React Native for our mobile app (iOS and Android).\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$80,000 — $110,000/year\n\n\n#Location\nEu

\nWe probably shouldn't tell you this, but practically the entire wine industry's eCommerce systems run on ColdFusion.  Let that sink in for a moment.  You can practically hear the Sarah McClachlan music and see the sad puppies.\n\nSomebody has to rescue the wine industry and that person will be you.  You'll lead a brand new team to rebuild our wine industry technology from the ground up.  In the process you'll help fuse our wine technology with our restaurant point-of-sale systems - because it turns out, a lot of wineries have restaurants.  They're great for date nights.\n\nYou'll work with other teams in our restaurant software division to create a modular architecture that we can all share.  It'll be microservice-ish, but not full blown because wine is a niche industry without the scale and team size of most microservice adopters.  This process is already underway in the restaurant division and the tech stack is Spring Boot, Couchbase, Rabbit MQ, and Elastic Search with Angular 2 on the front end.  You can live with that.\n\nYou'll lead a small team of engineers as they modernize the old ColdFusion tech stack.  You'll be expected to be a hands on coder, particularly on the back end, leading by example.  You'll deal with a minimum of corporate nonsense and get the freedom to do things right.\n\nAnd you'll do all this from the comfort of your own home.  This is a remote position, but you'll keep in touch with your team with daily virtual standups.  We'll pick a spot on the map every so often and get together for a technical conference or in person design confab.  And yes, there will probably be free wine and excuses to take your main squeeze on a trip to Napa Valley.  Tying a sweater around your neck for the duration is optional.

We are looking for driven & professional web developers who are familiar with: \n• Javascript MVC Framework (knowledge of Angular.Js) \n• HTML5/CSS3 (preferred knowledge of LESS or SASS) \n• PHP Yii Framework, PostgreSQL \n• Graph API integrations/application, SEO \n• Basic server management (bandwidth optimization, uploading to AWS) \n• UI and UX knowledge\n\nYour Responsibilities will include: \n• Stability fixes \n• Roll-out of new features \n\nYou will start immediately without training and report to the Head of Technical Development while working closely with the co-founders.\nPlease note that where work visas are involved, we will require the candidate to work for us full-time for at least 2 - 4 months before we are able to consider processing this. \n\nThis is due to the considerable amount of monetary & time investment required for us to support a work visa, making it necessary for us to have absolutely no doubts about a candidate's suitability for the role before we proceed.\nThis is a salary-based role, with equity on offer for the right candidate. There is potential for the position to evolve into a Product Manager role and incorporate leadership of a full team if growth makes it necessary. \n\nCompensation won't be Google level, but it will grow with further funding rounds & deliverables achieved. We have raised a seed round, much of which will go towards paying for you & your hardware because we recognise the value of solid technology.\n\nZoposh is an output-driven company which offers a flexible working schedule.\nPlease note that we are unable to support work visas at this time, although we are of course open to discussing this with exceptional candidates. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$1,000 — $24,000/year\n \n\n#Equity\n1.0 - 5.0\n\n\n#Location\nKuala Lumpur

CTO. python - django full-stack coder.\n\nwho are you? \n\nyou work well with people. you know its better to manage a large domestic dev force than to do it yourself. and you want to outsource dev work all across the globe. you don't look down on outsourcing. you're mindful of business efficiencies even if it is not your strong suit. and more importantly you believe in distributed workflows. also you know its a lot of hard work to create big companies that change the world. and that means a ton of code creation that you cannot do by yourself. although you push yourself to your limits because only then will you learn who you are. only then can you change the world- when you change yourself. you wish to reproduce yourself. you envision an army of brilliance that relies on a global supply chain of intellectual property. and you embrace leadership and all the qualities that that entails. all the trials and tribulations that pave its way. you're an evangelist for your company and its mission. and you are creating and maintaining its core- its heart. you have a lot of answers, but your most important one is that in the long run- "you don't know.' and so you push and you strive for understanding. you search out help. you take initiative and you ask a ton of questions. and by pushing yourself to always be learning- you better understand yourself and you keep recreating yourself and your company’s core technology to make it better, faster, stabler. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$150,000 — $150,000/year\n \n\n#Equity\n1.0 - 5.0\n\n\n#Location\nNew York City
