**ABOUT US**{linebreak}{linebreak}At [Close](https://close.com/), we're building the sales communication platform of the future. With our roots as the very first sales CRM to include built-in calling, we're leading the industry toward eliminating manual processes and helping companies to close more deals (faster). Since our founding in 2013, we've grown to become a profitable, 100% globally distributed team of ~33 high-performing, happy people that are dedicated to building a product our customers love.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our app’s frontend is a single-page JavaScript web app mostly written in React (originally built with Backbone.js). We bundle with Webpack and target only modern browsers. We test with Enzyme and Mocha run via Puppeteer. Our UI updates in near real-time and is written in LESS/CSS (with flexbox and grid layout) using BEM methodology and takes advantage of fun technologies like Websockets and WebRTC. {linebreak}{linebreak}We care about performance (e.g. route-based code splitting), maintainability, and testability of our frontend code. We sweat the UI/UX details and work collaboratively with the Product team throughout the design process. This means diving into lo-fi Freehand wireframes, and communicating continuously when those ideas are brought to life using Sketch/Abstract and code.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our frontend app is built on top of our REST API & GraphQL endpoints. Our backend tech stack consists of Python/Flask, MongoDB, Postgres, Elasticsearch, and Redis. We run our services in Docker on AWS.{linebreak}{linebreak}We ❤ open source – using dozens of open source projects with contributions to many of them, and released some of our own like [Microphone Recorder to Mp3](https://github.com/closeio/mic-recorder-to-mp3), [filevalidator.js,](https://github.com/closeio/filevalidator.js) [addresscompiler](https://github.com/closeio/addresscompiler), [backbone.mousetrap](https://github.com/closeio/backbone.mousetrap) and more at [Close Github](https://github.com/closeio). {linebreak}{linebreak}**ABOUT YOU**{linebreak}{linebreak}We're looking for an experienced full-time Frontend Software Engineer to join our engineering team. Someone who has a solid understanding of web technologies and wants to help design, implement, and launch major user-facing features.{linebreak}{linebreak}You should have senior level experience (~5 years) building modern frontend applications in JavaScript, HTML, and CSS, with at least 3 years of that experience using a JS framework (React, Vue, Angular, Backbone etc).{linebreak}{linebreak}You should have significant experience designing, debugging, and optimizing frontend applications to make them fast and reliable. You have significant experience with REST APIs and thoroughly understand HTTP requests. You have experience participating in code reviews and providing overall code quality suggestions to help maintain the structure and quality of the codebase.{linebreak}{linebreak}You should have great product sense and be able to think through user experience issues before diving into the code, and you exhibit a love for great UI.{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a small and talented team where you're supported in your efforts to grow professionally. You are able to manage your time well, communicate effectively and collaborate in a fully distributed team.{linebreak}{linebreak}You are located in an American or European time zone.{linebreak}{linebreak}**BONUS POINTS IF YOU**{linebreak}* Experience implementing real-time (e.g. websockets, polling, etc.) web apps{linebreak}* Experience working with GraphQL endpoints{linebreak}* An eye for design and experience with Sketch, Abstract, Photoshop, or similar{linebreak}* Led small project teams building and launching features{linebreak}* Contributed open source code (core or plugins) for a popular frontend framework such as React, Vue, or Angular{linebreak}* Built B2B SaaS products{linebreak}* Experience with sales or sales tools{linebreak}{linebreak}**COME HELP US WITH PROJECTS LIKE**{linebreak}* Conceiving, designing, building, and launching new user-facing features{linebreak}* Working with Twilio's API, WebSockets, and WebRTC to improve our calling features{linebreak}* Building user-facing analytics features that provide actionable insights based on sales activity data{linebreak}* Improving real-time collaboration user experience{linebreak}* Expanding our frontend GraphQL usage{linebreak}* Extending our React component library{linebreak}{linebreak}**WHY WORK WITH US?**{linebreak}* 100% Remote (*we believe in trust and autonomy*){linebreak}* 2 x Annual Team Retreats ([Lisbon Retreat Video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gKjyXMz-q-Q&feature=youtu.be)){linebreak}* Competitive salary{linebreak}* Medical, Dental with HSA option - 99% premiums paid *(US residents)*{linebreak}* 5 Weeks PTO + 6 Government Holidays + Dec 24 - Jan 1 Company Holiday{linebreak}* Parental Leave *(10 wks primary caregiver / 4 wks secondary caregiver)*{linebreak}* 401k matching at 4% *(US residents)*{linebreak}* [ Our story and team](https://close.com/about/){linebreak}* [ Glassdoor Reviews ](https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Reviews/Close-Reviews-E1155591.htm){linebreak}{linebreak}At Close, everyone has a voice. Howdy 👋We’re the folks at Jilt, an email marketing platform built for eCommerce. We help thousands of stores surprise and delight their customers with emails that drive sales. We’re looking for a driven, detail-oriented engineer to join our team and build fast, scalable backend systems in Rails.{linebreak}{linebreak}**The Role**{linebreak}{linebreak}You’ll work closely with your teammates on the engineering team to design, create, and refine systems that power the core platform; things like syncing data with external eCommerce platforms, optimizing our sending architecture & scheduler, and analyzing browsing & shopping behavior data. Jilt is built as a traditional Rails 5.2 app, with Postgres & Elasticsearch for persistence, and Sidekiq for background jobs. We use Angular (v1) to power our visual email editor and Vue.js for some areas with a lot of dynamic content, and are actively replacing both with React, so you’ll be able to help architect the APIs that will drive those new interfaces.{linebreak}{linebreak}While the majority of your time will be spent working on backend systems & features, you’ll also have the opportunity to work on various front-end systems, like fixing a bug with our email editor, replacing a legacy Slim template with a React view, or adding a new feature to our storefront JS.{linebreak}{linebreak}As one of our senior engineers, the team will look to you for advice and direction. You’ll help shape our best practices, decide on libraries & tooling, and refactor older or underperforming parts of the codebase. You’ll also be responsible for moving your projects forward, communicating your progress and milestones with others, and clearly documenting your work.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Here are some things you may do on a given day:**{linebreak}* Research and write a pitch to improve the performance of our email scheduling system{linebreak}* Refactor our storage subsystem to abstract how we handle file uploads{linebreak}* Troubleshoot an issue with our campaign segmentation feature by deep diving into our Elasticsearch cluster{linebreak}* Analyze a slow SQL query and suggest ways to improve it{linebreak}* Construct a detailed, multi-step data migration to split an existing model into two, with zero-downtime and including complicated data transformations{linebreak}* Triage the Sentry queue for any exceptions that need investigation{linebreak}* Develop a new API endpoint to support updated React components{linebreak}{linebreak}**On the first day you will:**{linebreak}* Meet your team and get familiar with how we work{linebreak}* Setup your local environment and tooling{linebreak}* Commit a small tweak to the codebase and ship it to production{linebreak}{linebreak}**In the first week you will:**{linebreak}* Develop, QA, review, and ship a small feature improvement{linebreak}* Participate in code review for a teammate’s code{linebreak}* Help a team member with fixing a bug{linebreak}{linebreak}**In the first month you will:**{linebreak}* Work closely with the product team to ship a large feature{linebreak}* Participate in your first support rotation week and help our support team with escalated issues{linebreak}* Publish a retrospective on your first large project to share successes & planned improvements for the next project{linebreak}{linebreak}**Who you’ll work with:**{linebreak}* Justin Stern, CTO - You’ll work with Justin to deeply understand our codebase, and learn how the various parts of our systems work together.{linebreak}* Beka Rice, Head of Product - Beka will help you learn our platform, in detail, and all the ways that our customers use Jilt.{linebreak}* You’ll also work with the rest of the product & engineering teams (Ivan, Lucas, Jonathan, Wes, Artan, Jared, Chase) to review one another’s work and collaborate on projects.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}**You**{linebreak}{linebreak}**To succeed in this position, you should have:**{linebreak}* Deep experience & proficiency in Ruby & Rails{linebreak}* Demonstrated ability to break larger epics out into smaller discrete stories with detailed implementation tasks{linebreak}* Experience working on the front-end and excitement for combining front-end frameworks like React alongside Rails{linebreak}* Familiarity working with external APIs (have experience with eCommerce platforms? This is a bonus — tell us!){linebreak}{linebreak}You love writing code that’s clear, self-documenting (but you know that self-documenting doesn’t mean no comments), and standards-compliant. You prefer writing Ruby, but are comfortable in JavaScript or picking up other languages (like Go or PHP) as needed. You have deep experience working with Rails and all of its libraries and know when to roll a custom solution to a problem or use a gem. You’ve worked with Sidekiq or a similar background processing system, and understand the subtle but important guidelines to follow when architecting performant, fault-tolerant background workers.{linebreak}{linebreak}You also love data and working with complex queries in SQL, whether as part of ActiveRecord or on the console. You have experience with Elasticsearch, or are excited to learn it, and are interested in the challenges involved with keeping separate datastores in sync. You love keeping up-to-date with the latest best practices and tools, and are constantly tweaking and improving the way you work. You know how to operate a hydraulic press, or least watched a YouTube video about them and think they’re totally rad.{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re excited to solve engineering challenges in the most pragmatic way possible, and most importantly, you keep the end user in mind and love getting feedback from customers to help improve our products.{linebreak}{linebreak}Finally, you can’t wait to join a small team that loves their work as much as you do, affords the opportunity to work on challenging & interesting projects, continuously learn and improve, and constantly ship your work. You’re an excellent writer and can communicate effectively whether drafting up a bug report, chatting in Slack, editing a wiki page, or drafting a retrospective. You know that code is about communication and explaining your thought process clearly goes hand-in-hand. {linebreak}{linebreak}Our team is fully-remote and we communicate primarily through Slack, Clubhouse, Google Docs, Basecamp, and weekly stand-ups via Zoom (a few short meetings) — we believe the best work happens when given lots of uninterrupted time that’s free of distractions.{linebreak}{linebreak}As a remote team, we believe that regular meetups are invaluable for getting to know each other better, so you should be available for 1-2 company-paid team trips per year. Curious about what those are like? Check out our recap of our last team retreat (SkyTrip), which brought the entire team out to Lake Tahoe, California for a week. It’s a plus if you think (like we do) that bears are absolutely the coolest animals in the forest. {linebreak}{linebreak}This is a full-time, salaried position, but hours are flexible. We know your work will speak for itself with commits, issues closed, and wiki edits.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Process**{linebreak}{linebreak}After an initial screening, you’ll get an email with a few questions to answer. Following that, you’ll have a few 45 minute phone chats with different people on our team to learn more about you and answer any questions you have about the position and company. {linebreak}{linebreak}The most qualified candidates will then be invited to complete a short one-day research project. If this goes well, we'll invite you to the final stage of our evaluation process: the trial project. During this ~2 week period, you'll work closely with your future manager, as well as a few other team members, as a paid contractor to implement your proposal from the research project. You'll be welcomed in Slack, introduced to any team members you may be working with, and will have regular chats with your future manager to share feedback and make sure all is going well. This brief trial period is a great way for you to make sure you enjoy the work and the team, and it also gives us an opportunity to do the same. At the end of the period, assuming a great experience for all, you'll be offered a full time position 🎉Then the real fun and full onboarding experience will begin! 😄{linebreak}{linebreak}**Benefits**{linebreak}{linebreak}Here are some benefits we're happy to offer to our team members:{linebreak}* Competitive salary{linebreak}* 27 days of paid time-off, in addition to 2 company holidays (SkyVerge Day in March, Founders Day in June 😀){linebreak}* Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance for US and Canadian residents and their families (reimbursements for comparable care for non-US/Canadian residents){linebreak}* 401k/RRSP Retirement plan with 4% company match for US/Canadian residents (contributions to comparable plans for non-US/Canadian residents){linebreak}* 8 weeks paid parental leave for new mothers and fathers{linebreak}* Work flexible hours from anywhere that has a reliable internet connection{linebreak}* Tools (hardware/software) to help you be productive{linebreak}* Allowance for professional growth (books, courses, conferences){linebreak}* Home office or co-working allowance{linebreak}* A Kindle to help you keep learning{linebreak}{linebreak}*We support workplace diversity and do not discriminate on any protected class. We believe when we work together as a team of different views, experiences, and ideas, we can build amazing things.*

Ideal Candidate{linebreak}We're interested in someone comfortable with a generalist and devops role. You should be knowledgeable of standard system administration tasks and have a firm understanding of the role of load balancers and cluster architecture. It's 100x harder to write code if you don't know how the underlying operating system works.{linebreak}We're looking for someone with a legitimate passion for technology, big data, and analyzing vast amounts of content.{linebreak}We are also looking for people outside of the U.S. and Canada to maximize our time zone distribution. Ideally there should be least a 4 hour overlap with the Pacific Standard Time Zone (PST / UTC-8). We're based out of San Francisco but are migrating to the international level. If you don't have a natural time overlap with UTC-8 you should be willing to work evenings to be able to communicate easily with the rest of the team.{linebreak}Culturally, we’re a remote company and want to embrace it as a way to reward our employees. We are fine with you working in remote locations as long as you’re generally available for communication and are productive.{linebreak}We want someone to come in full time in a contractor role. We will need about 40 hours from you per week. {linebreak}Job Responsibilities:{linebreak}Understanding our crawler infrastructure and ensuring top quality metadata for our customers. There's a significant batch job component to analyze the output from the crawl to ensure top quality data.{linebreak}Making sure our infrastructure is fast, reliable, fault tolerant, etc. At times this may involve diving into the source of tools like ActiveMQ, Cassandra and understand how the internals work. We contribute a LOT to Open Source development if our changes need to be given back to the community.{linebreak}Building out new products and technology that will directly interface with customers. This includes cool features like full text search, analytics, etc. It's extremely rewarding to build something from ground up and push it to customers directly. {linebreak}Architecture:{linebreak}Our infrastructure consists of Java on Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) with the stack running on ActiveMQ, Cassandra, Zookeeper, and Jetty. We use Ansible to manage our boxes. We have a full-text search engine based on Elasticsearch, and store our firehose API data within Cassandra.{linebreak}We have a totally new stack and infrastructure at this point. We recently did a full-stack rewrite and moved all the old code to our new infrastructure. This means we have very little legacy cruft to deal with.{linebreak}Here's all the cool stuff you get to play with:{linebreak}Large Linux / Ubuntu cluster running with the OS versioned using both Ansible and our own debian packages for software distribution.{linebreak}Massive amount of data indexed from the web and social media. We index from 5-20TB of data per month and want to expand to 100TB of data per month.{linebreak}Large Cassandra install on SSD. {linebreak}SOLR / Elasticsearch migration / install. We’re experimenting with bringing this up now so it would be valuable to get your feedback.{linebreak}Technical Skills:{linebreak}Here's where you shine! we're looking for someone with a number of the following requirements:{linebreak}Linux. Linux. Linux. Did I say Linux? We like Linux.{linebreak}Experience in modern Java development and associated tools.{linebreak}Maven, IntelliJ IDEA, Guice (dependency injection){linebreak}A passion for testing, continuous integration, and continuous delivery.{linebreak}Cassandra. Stores content indexed by our crawler.{linebreak}ActiveMQ. Powers our queue server for scheduling crawl work.{linebreak}A general understanding and passion for distributed systems.{linebreak}Ansible or equivalent experience with configuration management.{linebreak}Standard web API use and design. (HTTP, JSON, XML, HTML, etc).{linebreak}Cultural Fit:{linebreak}We’re a lean startup and very driven by our interaction with customers, as well as their happiness and satisfaction. Our philosophy is that you shouldn’t be afraid to throw away a week's worth of work if our customers aren’t interested in moving in that direction.{linebreak}We hold the position that our customers are 1000x smarter than we are and we try to listen to them intently, and consistently.{linebreak}Proficiency in English is a requirement. Since you will have colleagues in various countries with various primary language skills we all need to use English as our common company language. You must also be able to work with email, draft proposals, etc. Internally we work as a large distributed Open Source project and use tools like traditional email, Slack, Google Hangouts, and Skype.{linebreak}Familiarity working with a remote team and ability (and desire) to work for a virtual company. {linebreak}Should have a home workstation, fast Internet access, etc.{linebreak}Must be able to manage your own time and your own projects. {linebreak}Self-motivated employees will fit in well with the rest of the team.{linebreak}It goes without saying but being friendly and a team player is very important.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Extra tags: Linux. Linux. Linux. Did I say Linux? We like Linux. Experience in modern Java development and associated tools. Maven, IntelliJ IDEA, Guice (dependency injection) A passion for testing, continuous integration, and continuous delivery. Cassandra. Stores content indexed by our crawler. ActiveMQ. Powers our queue server for scheduling crawl work. A general understanding and passion for distributed systems. Ansible or equivalent experience with configuration management. Standard web API use and design. (HTTP, JSON, XML, HTML, etc).

CTO. python - django full-stack coder.{linebreak}{linebreak}who are you? {linebreak}{linebreak}you work well with people. you know its better to manage a large domestic dev force than to do it yourself. and you want to outsource dev work all across the globe. you don't look down on outsourcing. you're mindful of business efficiencies even if it is not your strong suit. and more importantly you believe in distributed workflows. also you know its a lot of hard work to create big companies that change the world. and that means a ton of code creation that you cannot do by yourself. although you push yourself to your limits because only then will you learn who you are. only then can you change the world- when you change yourself. you wish to reproduce yourself. you envision an army of brilliance that relies on a global supply chain of intellectual property. and you embrace leadership and all the qualities that that entails. all the trials and tribulations that pave its way. you're an evangelist for your company and its mission. and you are creating and maintaining its core- its heart. you have a lot of answers, but your most important one is that in the long run- "you don't know.' and so you push and you strive for understanding. you search out help. you take initiative and you ask a ton of questions. and by pushing yourself to always be learning- you better understand yourself and you keep recreating yourself and your company’s core technology to make it better, faster, stabler. {linebreak}{linebreak}#Salary{linebreak}150000 - 150000{linebreak} {linebreak}{linebreak}#Equity{linebreak}150000 - 150000{linebreak} {linebreak}{linebreak}#Location{linebreak}- New York City
