\nAbout balena\n\nBalena's mission is to unlock the potential of physical computing by removing friction for IoT fleet owners. We believe that edge computing is the next major computing paradigm, and every new computing paradigm needs a scalable development platform to match. We're building that platform with a complete, end-to-end solution that makes it easy for any developer to build applications for IoT and the Edge.\n\nOur software platform helps developers build, deploy and manage code on connected devices. We brought Docker to embedded GNU/Linux devices in 2013 and have been building our toolkit ever since. Our core product is the balenaCloud platform, but we also maintain a variety of successful open source projects including Etcher, openBalena, balenaOS and balenaEngine and made contributions to high-exposure projects such as Docker, Electron, and AppImage. We've also recently released our first hardware product, the balenaFin.\n\nOur technology is open, standards-based, and proven in production across a wide range of scenarios from robotics, drones, smart buildings, 3D printing, agriculture, medicine, and more. Our investors include OpenView, Threshold Ventures, Aspect Ventures, GE, and Ericsson.\n\nBalena is a highly distributed, remote-friendly company We rely on clear communication and the rule of "assume positive intent" to help us work together across time zones, cultures and first languages. As an organization, we have little hierarchy, and organize as needed to build complex features and solve big problems. We are looking for people who want to bring us even more diversity, and strongly encourage applications from people underrepresented in tech.\n\n\n\nOn being an Embedded Linux Engineer at balena\n\nAs an Embedded Linux Engineer at balena, you will be a core member of our on-device software and operating system team. You’re primary responsibility will be helping to build and maintain balenaOS, our open-source Linux distribution designed to run containers on resource-constrained IoT devices. Our operating system is built using Yocto Linux and is comprised of a common meta-layer plus device-specific layers for the 50+ device types that we currently support, such as the Raspberry Pi.\n\nYou’ll work on building new features for balenaOS, such as giving customers the ability to add functionality at the host OS level and remotely deploy updates to their host OS, just like they currently do at the application level. You’ll build scalable tools and processes to help us support 1,000+ different device types on balenaOS. You’ll also help maintain and manage contributions to our open source repositories and community-contributed device support.\n\nOur users and customers rely on balenaOS for everything from home projects to production use cases; our Embedded Linux Engineers are focused on providing a solid and reliable operating system with an excellent developer experience.\n\n\n\nResponsibilities\n\n\n* Help architect, build, and maintain balenaOS, the first open source embedded operating system tailor-made for running Linux containers at the edge\n\n* Add balenaOS support for new boards and maintain support for our 50+ existing supported boards (e.g. Raspberry Pi, Intel NUC, NVIDIA Jetson, etc)\n\n* Help build tools and processes to enable our team to scalably support 1,000+ device types\n\n* Contribute to upstream open source projects such as Yocto Linux Project and all of our open-source components that we maintain\n\n* Develop and maintain OS components that provide new features for the host OS and/or integrate with other components in balena ecosystem, such as the host OS update mechanism\n\n* Consider the impact and tradeoffs of changes to balenaOS across the entire balena fleet and ecosystem through in depth analysis and understanding of our products and services\n\n* Debug various issues in device BSPs (board support packages), in the OS itself, and in the interfaces with other balenaCloud components\n\n* Design and write tests for balenaOS releases\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRequirements\n\n\n\n* Abstract and genericize subtle variations across different device types\n\n* Have a product mindset: gather feedback, understand and articulate user needs, help develop the OS roadmap, and build solutions\n\n* Perseverance to understand the root cause when investigating elusive bugs\n\n* Strong problem-solving abilities. You can split a complex problem into incremental pieces\n\n* Continuous improvement mindset and desire to make yourself and others more effective\n\n* Comfortable working in an environment that practices radical candor and transparency\n\n* Excellent written communication skills, and fluency in English\n\n\n\n\nBonus points for the following\n\n\n* Experience with the Linux Kernel and the Yocto project\n\n* Having worked remotely before\n\n* Experience with low-level hardware programming of microprocessors and embedded systems, ideally on ARM\n\n* Experience leading projects or bringing people together to collaborate and build great products\n\n* Experience leading or contributing to OSS projects (please include a URL)\n\n* Experience with the balena ecosystem as a user\n\n* Experience with technologies like Docker, Rust\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout working at balena\n\nWe come from 15+ countries, and we embrace a remote culture with flexible hours. To us, this means being highly productive while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance. You need to be able to work remotely, and have a dependable internet access available so you can join video calls.\n\nWe are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity. We value knowledge and initiative more than educational and personal backgrounds, age, or location. We maintain a work environment in which team members are treated with respect at all times and in which thoughts and ideas can be shared openly.\n\nWe communicate proposals, discuss with others in the team and accept feedback if it makes the result better. We value the ability to learn, which is more important to us than knowledge of specific technologies. We know that learning fast means being outside our comfort zone, which is OK — we'd rather learn than let our assumptions get in our way.\n\n\n\n\nBenefits\n\n\n\n* Work with an extremely talented, diverse team\n\n* Equipment of your choice\n\n* Remote-friendly\n\n* Flexible working hours\n\n* Generous vacation policy\n\n* Annual company gathering in an international location\n\n* We send you hardware for side projects!\n\n\n

To our future Senior Embedded Engineer\n\nAt Density, we build one of the most advanced people sensing systems in the world. The product and infrastructure is nuanced and one-of-a-kind. Building this product for scale has been an exercise in patience, creativity, remarkable engineering, laser physics, global logistics, and grit. The team is thoughtful, driven, and world-class.\n\nWhy this is an important role\n\nLast week our deployed DPUs detected a million humans walking through doors. A number that increases every week.\n\nAs engineers, we think it's pretty cool to be capturing events at this volume. Especially when it's done anonymously, accurately, and in real-time. Although counting people is a DPU's top priority, it needs to do so much more.\n\nOur system must efficiently and reliably:\n- Receive and process improvements through command and control functionality\n- Seamlessly interact with our network of partner products (think building automation and security integrations)\n- Push diagnostic data so we can remotely monitor and troubleshoot.\n\nOur DPU has a growing set of responsibilities. We need an experienced hand to help us imagine, build, and maintain these mission critical systems and functionalities. Are you up for the job?\n\nThis position reports to Density’s Director of Software.\n\nRead our values here.\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\n\n* Deep understanding of modern C++\n\n* Exceptional comfort with networking, specifically in enterprise environments (this is big for us)\n\n* Strong experience with the Linux system level APIs, placing an emphasis on designing AsyncIO/event loop based embedded user space daemons.\n\n* Experience integrating with custom hardware via standard Linux interfaces.\n\n* Strong understanding of TLS based communication (ideally using OpenSSL).\n\n* Experience interfacing with large scale cloud based backends.\n\n* Experience with an embedded Linux build system (Yocto, Buildroot, Linux from Scratch)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBonus Points for:\n\n\n* Computer Vision\n\n* Machine learning and machine learning hardware\n\n* Experience with building automation. Specifically Bacnet protocol.\n\n* Python 3 AsyncIO\n\n* AWS lambda\n\n* Nomad/Terraform\n\n* ZMQ\n\n* Kafka\n\n* BLE\n\n* 802.11 \n\n* CDP or LLDP\n\n\n

\nWir machen IoT powered by light.

\nDescription\n\nWe are looking for a software engineer to join our team as we expand our connected portfolio. Reporting to the Communications Software Engineering Manager, you will be a key member of the software team and will help to develop the next generation of connected solutions for future Dyson products. We work in a supportive environment, in a team which is constantly aiming to improve itself. We’re looking for someone who shares this ethic, and expresses a desire to create high-quality, robust code to solve diverse real-world problems. You must be fluent in C/C++ and be equally comfortable with high-level design and abstraction as with implementation, deployment, testing and debugging of application code.\n\nMarket Overview\n\nHome to our global Research, Design and Development centre and all of our Commercial functions, Dyson HQ is tucked away in countryside famous for the railway tunnels and bridges of Isambard Brunel, who revolutionised modern engineering. Our secluded location helps us to protect our ideas and stay independent-minded. Yet nearby are the fashionable cities of Bristol and Bath (where a young James Dyson invented cyclone technology).\n\nThe building is the heartbeat of Dyson. In 2017, our HQ will double its footprint with an ambitious new expansion.\n\nFunction Overview\n\nIn the future, the way technology is controlled will be integral to how it performs. Dyson software engineers are already transforming the way our owners interact with their machines. Our first connected robot vacuum launched in 2014 and its companion app takes cleaning into the digital era. Scheduling cleans. Reviewing mapping data. Diagnosing technical issues. Our new technology is advancing at speed. Network-based robotics and intelligent sensing technologies, all enabled by advanced software and app platforms. And all cementing Dyson’s place as a pioneering global technology organisation.\n\nAccountabilities\n\n• Development and delivery of embedded software and communication protocols for consumer products, using agile practices\n\n• Development of tools to support embedded software product development.\n\n• Development of testing and validation strategies.\n\n• Maintenance and enhancement of software for existing Dyson products.\n\n• Administration and maintenance of supporting infrastructure for software development.\n\n• Integration of software with hardware\n\nSkills\n\nEssential\n\n• Experience of developing real-time embedded products\n\n• Experience in high level languages including: C and C++\n\n• Experience of RTOS and/or embedded OS e.g. FreeRTOS, ThreadX, Linux etc\n\n• Exposure to one or more of the following: WiFi (802.11), Bluetooth V4.x, ZigBee, 802.15.4, 3GPP, MQTT\n\n• Knowledge of UML\n\n• Exposure to development in an Agile (Scrum) environment\n\n• Ability to prioritize and manage your workload\n\n• Strong communication skills\n\nDesirable\n\n• Experience in scripting languages, including Python\n\n• Experience in Java and Objective C\n\n• Experience of Atlassian Development and Collaboration tools (JIRA, Confluence, Stash etc.)\n\n• Experience of using Enterprise Architect\n\nBenefits Overview\n\nDyson monitors the market to ensure competitive salaries and pension contributions. Beyond that, you’ll also enjoy a profit-related bonus, generous leave and life insurance. But financial benefits are only the start of a Dyson career. Rapid professional growth, leadership development and new opportunities abound, driven by regular reviews and dynamic workshops. And with a vibrant culture, flexible working hours, the latest devices and a relaxed dress code, it’s an exciting team environment geared to creativity, innovation and ambition.

\nAt DAQRI, our goal is to change the way the world works. Might seem lofty, but that’s what we work towards every day. We wholeheartedly believe that if you change the way people work, you change lives. But enough about us, let’s talk about you.\n\n\nDo you watch “Back to the Future 2” and get angry about the fact that we don’t yet have hover boards? Do you watch the Jetsons and wonder where the heck our moving sidewalks are? Do you lie awake at night and wonder how much time you’d have to commit to the project if you decided to build an invisibility cloak? Then you’re one of us! We’ve found that sweet spot where technology and science fiction meld to create a new reality, and our super secret proprietary projects are changing the world for the better.\n\n\nDAQRI Smart Helmet boasts the most advanced sensor suite of any wearable or mobile device to date along with unparalleled processing power to back it up, provided by state of the art systems on a chip to run DAQRI's state of the art computer vision algorithms. We're able to invest in creating the best-augmented reality device thanks to our premium industrial customer base that is focused on performance. (Helmet performance, not dance performance – although, we do love to move to the beat! We’ve got plenty of poppers, lockers, and whackers, but we’re looking for someone who has mastered Memphis Jookin to join our office dance crew, so please note all dance experience on your resume).\n\n\n\nOur team is small (but not, like, scary small – not like the breath-stealing troll in Stephen King’s “Cat’s Eye”), made up of top talent (our karaoke nights are legendary), and rapidly growing (but not, like, scary growth. Not like sprouting horns or a tail or a third ear or anything), which provides an excellent opportunity for ambitious engineers to make a huge impact and expand their careers. Do you want to help define the future? Or do you just wanna dance? Either way, let’s do this!

Many of our current projects are still super secret (shhh!) and provide a unique opportunity to work with some of the best customers on some of the most-interesting problems in the world.\n\nAbout Tome: A passion for connecting hardware products to software applications led Jake Sigal and Massimo Baldini to establish Tome, Inc. in April 2014. Founded in metro Detroit, Tome develops connectivity products to keep people mobile and active, while creating value as a focused niche within the larger Internet of Things movement. Tome is a member of the StartUp Health accelerator, based in New York City. Sigal and Baldini sold their previous startup, Livio, to Ford Motor Co. in 2013. \nWho are we looking for?\n\nWe are looking for a proactive self-starters with a flair for innovation and a passion for doing a job right. Our software team is expanding to cope with the influx of new business and we need to add new people to help us succeed. A good background in digital TV is an advantage, as is an understanding of the constraints of embedded programming and hands on development in a Linux environment. \n\nOur working environment\n\nWe promote a quiet no frills, working environment where software engineers can focus on the task of writing code. It’s an open office environment so discussions can be quickly done letting you get back to what you're best at, writing code. We’re a small company so we look for people that can be self sufficient on the tasks, even to the point of doing you own IT support, though help is on hand if you need it. We work on Linux desktop and laptop machines mainly running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. You’ll mainly be developing in a x86 based simulated set top box  environment for code that will be run on a target embedded system so you need to be familiar with both and understand the constraints that places on your code. You will also be expected to move your code to the embedded product giving you the chance to see how it performs in the real world of target hardware. We have a continuous integration system based on GIT, Gerrit and Jenkins and integrate it with our Redmine system that we use for issue tracking and as an Agile tracking board. We use quality metrics like Valgrind, CppCheck, and Google unit test frameworks to automatically check the quality of checkins and functional tests with Cpplint to constantly check the quality of tip. You're expected to take ownership of your assignments and to  produce high quality code that you're proud of and that you can document using Doxygen so  that you can maintain it and have others take on maintenance in the future. In short we focus on helping you write the best code you can and not attending dozens of meetings or writing lengthy reports.
