Nathan James is hiring a Remote Lead Software Engineer

Nathan James is looking for an experienced Lead Software Engineer to help drive one of our teams in the development and support of our in-house ERP system that's tailored to meet the needs of our rapidly growing eCommerce business. The product spans inventory, warehouse management, purchasing, and more. You will play a key role in guiding the implementation and growth of the team and product leading to improving our control and tracking of every aspect of the business as well as help increase productivity and reduce costs for the company. We are looking for someone to help dive in and solve some interesting problems that exist between the digital and physical world via our API first ERP.\n\n\nPeople-first company, design-first home.\n\nWe are a design-first, home furnishing company focusing on the habits of urban dwellers and first time home buyers. We pride ourselves on the best in class customer happiness, providing the highest possible quality products that are affordable for the majority and assembly that isn't dreadful.\n\nBecause we are a people-first company, we understood the importance of being fully distributed from the beginning. We strive to reduce friction at work while preserving the human experience. Taking this approach helps our teammates avoid compromising who they are or their values in pursuit of a career. \n\n\nABOUT THE ROLE:\nThis role will be part of a continually growing engineering department solving real world issues and be a key player in bringing to life new functionality for the system.\n\nAs a Group Lead you will collaborate with the team to review requirements, build out functionality, squash bugs, and expand automated testing. During on-boarding, you’ll be expected to be proactive in your process and learn quickly. Once fully up-to-speed (2-3 months), the initial focus will be on or related to Purchase and Sales Orders, Inventory Management, Warehouse Management, and Accounting. The team will help with direction and design decisions, trade-off and risk recommendations, and general experience improvements.\n\nYour work will be leveraged by Nathan James to move away from 3rd party systems, improve existing workflows, enhance business processes, and reduce costs.\n\n\nABOUT US:\nWe understand, now more than ever, that time is finite. That’s why with everything we work toward, we try to solve for happiness. Happiness means a lot of different things to different people, so we put in the work that goes into building an inclusive and supportive place for you to do the best work of your career. Our values and our benefits are designed to support a healthy relationship with your work. Our operating values provide the framework we use in building a happy and resilient organization.\n\nWe also understand working for Nathan James isn’t the main function of your life, and we don’t expect that! We’ve found that a team member who will be happy and fulfilled as a remote team member at Nathan James is someone who values their personal life and identity outside of work. \n\nThat’s why we don’t create mandatory team hangouts or events. We focus on how to improve collaboration, not forcing engagement.\n\nWe collaborate best when we listen and learn from each other. We become stronger when we advocate new perspectives and viewpoints. This gives us all the chance to amplify our voices to achieve our goals. We focus on what we’re solving for, so we don’t create barriers or expectations that distract us from our mission. We also don’t set unreasonable working hours, deadlines, or goals. We create with calm, “slow is smooth and smooth is fast”. \n\nWhen you join the Nathan James team, you can expect a thorough, but mindful onboarding process with ramp-up time to learn. You can expect to give and provide direct feedback. You can expect minimal meetings. You can expect to work with smart and good people. You can expect to be counted on. Most importantly, you can expect to do the best work of your career here. \n\n\nABOUT YOU:\nWe’re looking for someone who is an open and active communicator, with a strong team mentality, and is actively curious. You have experience with API-first products, deploying features often and well tested, passionate about automation, and comfortable knowing when you need help or don’t know something.\n\nYou love complex challenges, you’re driven by problem solving and not just duct tape solutions. If you don’t know how to do something you use existing documentation and your resourcefulness to dive-deep and figure it out. You don’t require constant hand-holding, but you’re not afraid to speak up when requirements aren’t clear or they require additional context and details.\n\nYou have 6+ years of experience working in a LAMP/LEMP stack with Laravel and REST APIs. Additionally, experience with queues (Redis, RabbitMQ, etc), Vue, and/or DevOps is an added plus. You have at least 3+ years developing and deploying consumer or enterprise applications at scale. At a minimum, you must have deep interest and knowledge of the eCommerce landscape.\n\nYou have experience leading a team, balancing thoughtful leadership and mentorship to both provide answers when needed and allow your teammates to grow. You also know when to push back to ensure the team is not overwhelmed. \n\nThis is a remote role, since we are a remote company. With the freedom and flexibility of a remote role comes the luxury to work in whichever manner helps you perform your best! However, this ideal is best coupled with an individual who has a keen ability to self-regulate and self-manage. Our salaries are competitive for similar roles based in the country you will be working from.\n\nOur team works from home offices, co-working spaces, and coffee shops. You’ll find us in places that foster effective writing, self-discipline, and comfort with open communication.\n\nIf everything you’ve read so far is exciting you in a very natural and not forced way, then you are the type of person to be a key contributor to innovation and scaling a business like Nathan James!\n\n\nBENEFITS & PERKS: \nOur benefits aim to support a life well lived, both at and away from work.\n\nWith these benefits, we want and expect you to take vacations, spend time with your family, be conscious of your wellness, invest in broadening your education, and strengthen your personal happiness. \n\n\nHOW TO APPLY:\nPlease submit an application here that speaks directly to this position. There are no right answers or cookie-cutter expectations. A cover letter is not required, but those that clearly demonstrate how Nathan James would be a great fit for you and how you would be a great fit for us, will be given full attention and are highly appreciated. \n\nYou’ll hear from us about advancement to a video screen and then on to a work sample, where you’ll get a chance to see the types of challenges you would be solving in this role. Our interviews are all remote by video chat, with your future colleagues, on your schedule.\n\nWe aim to make an offer and have this person start by the end of November 2021. \n\nWe appreciate your consideration in having Nathan James be part of your career. Our open conversation starts with this post. We look forward to hearing from you.\n\nCheck us out on LinkedIn here! \n\nBe sure to mention the words **PIANO MORAL TODDLER** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants.\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$180,000 — $190,000/year\n\n\n#Location\nNorth America Preferred

## Your Day-to-day\n\nThis is a contract-to-hire remote project manager position. Individuals only, please :)\n\nFundamentally, your job is to make sure our people are working efficiently on the our clients' biggest opportunities, and that our clients have visibility into what we're working and are bought in to our timing and approach.\n\n## How We View the Role\n\nOne of the most common complaints from clients about other agencies is that they are absolutely terrible at communicating. We're happy to report that we take communication as seriously as the implementation work itself, so the Project Manager role is absolutely critical to our success as a company. Communication is your primary responsibility. As such, much of your work will happen inside our communication tools—Slack, Jira, Zendesk, Email, and Hangouts.\n\nAs the nexus of information in the company you'll ensure information gets to the right people at the right time. There are three distinct roles you'll work closely with: Account Executives, clients, and Individual Contributors.\n\nYou'll collaborate closely with an Account Executive to break down project requirements they've produced for larger client initiatives into actionable tasks.\n\nYou'll work with our clients to document and schedule smaller tasks, keep them up-to-date on larger initiatives, and gather feedback and other project-related information.\n\nFinally, you'll work with individual contributors to make sure they understand the scope of their weekly work and have what they need to do it.\n\n## About BranchLabs\n\nBranchLabs is a small but rapidly growing fully remote eCommerce consultancy. We provide eCommerce strategy and implementation services for our clients. Our clients are generally vertically integrated, branded B2C businesses. We help them sell more online, show their brand in the best light, and optimize their backend eCommerce processes.\n\nOur reputation is built on delivering results. We take pride in the work we produce. The products we deliver are high quality inside and out, and they help our clients capitalize on real opportunities. We work closely with stakeholders on our clients’ marketing teams, combining their understanding of their customers with our understanding of all things eCommerce. Together, we craft solutions that work for our clients and their customers.\n\n## Some Notes on Culture\n\nHere are some of our values. They’re always being refined based on what works and what doesn’t.\n\n- We value clear, concise communication.\n- Quality can only be assessed with a clear problem definition.\n- Context—understanding our clients and their customers—empowers individual contributors to find better solutions.\n- Automating repeatable processes frees up time for more interesting problems.\n- No process for process’ sake. No meetings for meetings’ sake. But there’s a place for both.\n- Build or use tools to provide predictability and eliminate boring work.\n- Individual productivity is hugely dependent on a minimally distracting, supportive environment.\n\n# Responsibilities\n ## Accountabilities\n\nAs a manager, you will be measured by the output of your team. Here’s how we do that.\n\n- Projects are consistently completed on time and on budget. When a project is not on track—it happens!—the appropriate stakeholders are informed as soon as possible.\n- Individual contributors are able to make rapid progress on their tasks, as every bit of required information is organized and ready for them to begin work.\n- Priority tasks are being triaged and worked on appropriately, and critical issues are not slipping through the cracks.\n- Clients feel confident they have insight into their projects' progress, and are confident about our approach.\n\n## Responsibilities\n\nThis is what you’ll actually be doing on a day-to-day basis.\n\n- Helping coordinate communication between our internal staff and clients.\n- Capturing requirements as issues in Jira, written with contextual information so they’re actionable for the individual doing the task.\n- Shepherding client requests from initial contact through to actionable format in our issue tracker, Jira.\n- Managing work requests from clients in Zendesk.\n- Gathering and documenting information to unblock individual contributors.\n- Reviewing and approving work before it is presented to clients or deployed.\n- Conducting status calls with clients to keep both our teams pointing the same direction.\n- Identifying and implementing opportunities to improve our process so we can deliver better results more efficiently. \n\n# Requirements\n## Required Qualifications\n\nThese are the must haves.\n\n- Prior experience managing or leading.\n- Able to understand the boundaries of technical systems well enough to have an intuition for what requests might be small/medium/large.\n- A conversational knowledge of the web. Example knowledge might include rough HTML/CSS knowledge, understanding what Javascript is used for, how a server responds to a request for a web page, what a browser cache is, what cookies are used for, etc.\n- As a remote first company, excellent written communication skills are a must.\n- You are punctual and organized.\n\n## Ideal Qualifications\n\nIf you fulfill the above *and* have experience with a few of the below, definitely get in touch.\n\n- Prior experience in an agile environment.\n- Technical enough to be able to help guide clients towards effective solutions in realtime, without developer input at all times.\n- Prior eCommerce admin, design, or development experience—particularly on Magento or Shopify. \n\nBe sure to mention the words **ALERT ONLY SMOKE** when applying to show you read the job post completely. This is a beta feature to avoid spam applicants.\n\n
