Sugar is hiring a Remote Senior Software Engineer

At [Sugar](http://www.sugarliving.com), we make residential properties feel like home by fostering community among residents and integrating deeply with the technology stack that powers modern buildings.\n\nMost residential apps are clunky, outdated, and a pain to use. Tasks as simple as paying rent, communicating with your property manager, or unlocking your door are cumbersome and tedious. Many residents feel isolated and disconnected from their neighbors, which is especially relevant in the light of COVID-19 and its impact. This leads to high resident turnover, negative online reviews, and decreased revenue for building owners. \n\n**By building delightful experiences for our users, we're creating a positive-sum world where residents thrive and property value is maximized.**\n\nAs residents ourselves, we're creating the living experience we wish we had - and helping property owners deliver that experience to their residents. We're fortunate to have built a team of ambitious, curious, talented, and diverse individuals who are passionate about this problem space.\n\nWe're looking for an experienced full stack engineer to help us drive our mission forward. This role reports to the Lead Software Engineer.\n\n### Importance of Engineering\n\nOur users trust us with one of the most personal aspects of their lives - access to their home and their community. As such, we hold ourselves to incredibly high standards of reliability, security, and usability. Building systems that meet these demands is a challenging task.\n\nSome of the engineering problems that we solve on a daily basis include:\n\n- Reliably and securely controlling on-premises hardware and IoT devices in varying network conditions\n- Integrating with legacy enterprise software in a way that masks the underlying complexity\n- Crafting fluid, intuitive interfaces with sub-100ms interactions on a wide variety of end-user devices\n\nBuilding the systems that represent the future of residential living is brimming with complexity and opportunity. We'd love your help.\n\n### What we’re looking for:\n\n- You have 5+ years of experience building consumer-facing applications, or can demonstrate a similar proficiency\n- You have a strong command of technologies like Django, Postgres, Redis, React/React Native, and GraphQL\n- You're able to learn quickly and you embrace the opportunity to share your knowledge with others\n- You enjoy experimentation and can build large applications through small iterative releases.\n- You thrive in an early-stage startup environment, working closely with a tight knit team, learning daily from users, and having autonomy and ownership over the products you build\n- You're an excellent communicator, and are able to clearly distill complex topics for both technical and non-technical team members\n- You're able to break down large problems down and deeply understand the tradeoffs involved in solving them\n- You're humble, kind, and incredibly self-aware\n- You know your own weak spots intimately and have a genuine desire to improve\n- You’re looking for a long-term role with a company that has long-term ambition\n\n### Bonus points if:\n\n- You have experience working with physical access control systems\n- You have a background in information security\n- You have experience building applications that meet the standards of SOC-2 or ISO-27001 compliance\n\n### Working @ Sugar\n\nOn top of interesting work, Sugar provides:\n\n- The ability to grow from the ground up with a VC-backed startup in a high-growth industry\n- Competitive salary + equity grants\n- A commitment to using, support, and building open-source\n- A culture focused on optimizing for learning and personal development\n- Sane working hours\n- 15 days/year PTO + All major holidays off\n- Medical, Dental, and Vision Health Insurance Coverage (Sugar pays 80% for employee + dependents)\n- $100/month Health + Wellness Stipend (gym membership, yoga classes, massages, therapy, etc.)\n- $1000/year professional development stipend (conferences, leadership / communication coaches, books, courses, etc.) \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$120,000 — $140,000/year\n\n\n#Location\nUS / Canada

# About the role\nDraftable API is our cloud API service for comparing documents, powered by our world-class Draftable technology. It is one of our two main products. Over the last year, we’ve been experiencing strong growth and we are now looking for an excellent generalist to join our team.\nYou will be the technical lead for Draftable API and oversee much of web infrastructure. You will be working with our Product Lead and other team members to prioritize and build features. \nYou will also be involved with developing our document comparison viewer, which is written in Javascript and used in all our products.\nYou will spend at least 80% of your time thinking about how to implement things and writing code.\n\n# About you\n* You have 5+ years of experience with Python (Django, Django REST Framework).\n* You have 3+ years of experience with front-end development (Javascript, CSS, HTML).\n* You have at least a year of experience with React.\n* You are independent and self-reliant. You are happy working on a task by yourself but you will take initiative to involve other team members when necessary.\n* You have a strong awareness of efficiency and computer science fundamentals (but you don’t need to know this stuff cold like a grad).\n* You appreciate the importance of clear communication, especially in a remote role.\n\n# Work/life balance\nWe understand you have a life outside work and we will respect your non-working and family time. We expect engineers to work a full-time load of 40 hours per week (and no more) and to be very productive during that time.\nOur team is mostly remote (5 in Melbourne, 2 in Poland, and a few travelling the world). And we prefer working with remote engineers, but we’re also open to welcoming you into our Melbourne office. \nYou will have flexibility to schedule your work around your other obligations but you will usually work at a fixed time. If your work hours don’t have much overlap with Australian business hours, you will need to be flexible with scheduling meetings late at night or early in the morning.\nOur service is very stable and we haven’t had any critical incidents that required urgent attention over the last year.\n\n# About our culture\nWe’re easy-going and easy to work with. We’re developer-led and have a flat structure. We are collaborative, and we expect you to take an active role in evolving our engineering culture. We like writing things down. We love Slack.\nWe launch things as soon as they’re ready. We do things right the first time, even if it takes a little longer. We don’t have much technical debt. From time to time we promise a feature to customer, but we otherwise don’t have many external deadlines.\n\n# Some things you might be doing in your first few months\n* Adding a new end-point to Draftable API\n* Build an admin interface for internal staff\n* Get our integration tests running inside docker\n* Build a marketing sign-up page for our website that pipes form data through to Salesforce\n* Work with our product lead to add a feature to our comparison viewer\n\n\n# About our technical stack\nWe have a fairly standard tech stack: Python (Django, Celery, SaltStack), React, PostgreSQL, Redis and RabbitMQ. Our frontend is JS, react, CSS, HTML.\nOur core algorithms and products are written in .NET (mostly C# with some F# and some C++). In this role, it’s not intended that you will contribute to the core technology. \n\nRead more about our hiring process here: https://draftable.com/careers/hiring-process \n\n#Salary and compensation\nUS$70000 to US$110000/year\n\n\n#Location\n🌏 Worldwide

Development specialized on the free software project Open edX, used by many universities and companies to run online courses. See edx.org, stanford.edu or fun-mooc.fr for examples of Open edX instances.\n\nThe Open edX platform is a large Python/Django codebase, with good code standards and architecture (a lot of the edX engineers come from MIT).\n\n# Responsibilities\n You would work on different clients contracts using the platform. The clients list/references include Harvard, MIT, edX themselves, the French government, and various startups & universities currently running their own instances, or looking to create one. Tasks are very varied, from developing core platform features, custom exercises and tools for specific courses (XBlocks), customizing and deploying instances, working fullstack, operating our service infrastructure, improving our hosting platform, etc. You won't get bored here.\n\nMost of your work is published as free software (Open edX is released under the AGPL license, which requires clients to release modifications under the same license), and you would also contribute to the free software project, pushing most of your developments upstream through pull requests, contributing features, documentation or help on mailing-lists.\n \n\n# Requirements\n**Basic requirements**\n\n* 3+ years working with Python\n* Experience with Python web frameworks, specifically Django\n* 3+ years of HTML, Javascript, and CSS (experience with React is a big plus!)\n* Experience with unit testing\n* You feel comfortable working in a Linux environment, specifically Debian or Ubuntu\n* Experience with databases: MySQL, MongoDB, PostgreSQL\n* Experience with contributing to free software projects, and communicating within a free software community\n\n**Additional skills**\n\nYou would have to work with tasks from the following categories, but you would be able to pick up the skills on the job if you don't master this yet:\n\n* DevOps experience, especially on Debian/Ubuntu servers, Terraform, Vault, Packer, Prometheus, ELK, Docker. We are building a modern infrastructure and having a strong DevOps presence on top of core software engineering skills is a big plus with us.\n* Cloud computing, like AWS or OpenStack\n* Configuration management tools such as Ansible\n* RabbitMQ, Redis & Elasticsearch\n* git source control\n* Mobile development (iOS and/or Android)\n* Managing clients & projects from beginning to completion (senior developer)\n* Public speaking at conferences (you would present a talk every year at the Open edX Con)\n
