Background

Faria Education Group specialises in building and operating software systems for use in international education. The main products are ManageBac and OpenApply . We are a remote-first company that values diverse teams. The worldwide technical team behind these products are spread between Taiwan, United States and Ukraine. We have additional technical staff in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada.

The Interop division within Faria Education Group is tasked with integrating key partner systems and services with ManageBac. This is an area where we project substantial growth in the next 2-5 years and we are growing our staff accordingly. Integration relies on a variety of APIs and SSO connections, both written by FEG and supplied by external partners.

Currently we are a Ruby shop, though you may have the chance to explore additional technologies as our systems mature. We use a variety of other software in production including Rails, Redis, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Memcached, and more.

Role Description

This is a mid-level, full-time, remote development position. We expect you to be able to contribute to the development of high-quality software solutions with some guidance. You should already be familiar with web development using Ruby on Rails, and have experience using and creating API solutions. You will need to work with APIs at a variety of maturity levels. We also value high-quality UI/UX work that matches our emphasis on customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Integrate partner products and services with our own products through use of partner APIs.
  • Implement UI/UX specs from our design team.
  • Support partners in their use of Faria APIs.
  • Troubleshoot API and SSO issues, suggest and implement solutions.
  • Work effectively as part of a remote team.

Communication

Because this is a remote position, effective communication is essential:

  • Communicate with other parts of Faria Education Group including product teams, QA, design, support and marketing.
  • Proper remote presence & etiquette through Slack, BaseCamp, GitHub and other systems.
  • Adherence to operating procedures with timely followups to avoid surprises and dropped work.
  • You will report to the Principal Developer for Interop, who is a direct report to the VP of Engineering.

Location

This is a 100% remote job. The ideal candidate will be in the GMT timezone (London time) or prepared to have daily availability during GMT business hours. Candidates in other EMEA timezones will also be considered. Because of the global nature of our business, you should also be prepared for conference calls outside of business hours. Potential emergency situations can call for support at any hour, though we work hard to minimize those situations.

*Please note: Due to a high volume of applicants, only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.*

Benefits

  • Salary negotiable, expected range USD 60K-90K/year
  • Company-supplied laptop (Retina MacBook Pro or other)
  • Desk space in our London office is available if desired
  • Books ('unlimited within reason') and conference attendance budget. We expect you to have a plan for professional development.
  • Remote-first environment

This year

Front Row is a small, lean, early stage (series A), tight-knit education technology company of about 15 people that has a history of hiring folks who are able to get a lot done with few resources. In just a few years we went from one classroom to being used in 30% of US schools by over 3 million students. Our mission is important to us, and we're looking to hire competent, professional and driven self-starters to join our team.

We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer, responsible for designing and developing applications and distributed systems for the Front Row ecosystem in Haskell, Flow, ReactJS, PostgreSQL, Ansible and many others. The role would involve bringing best practices to Front Row engineering, mentoring junior developers, and the option to move into a Tech Lead position (if you’re interested).

We're one of the few companies in the world built on a purely functional stack and, as an engineer here, you will get to work on your deliverable end-to-end, from the UX to the deployment logic. We’re also a major steward of the Haskell open source community, shaping the direction of the language and the up-and-coming ecosystem for years to come.

The Opportunity
At IWT, we take pride in creating some of the best online programs in the world, from Zero to Launch, to Find Your Dream Job, to Earn1K, and many more. And we’re just getting started. As a Product Developer, you will take ideas and transform them into finished products that make a huge impact on thousands of students around the world. You’ll be working with a world-class product development team and will learn more about human psychology in 3 months than you have in your entire career. We’ll teach you proprietary product development techniques that you won’t learn anywhere else. Most importantly, you’ll see first hand how your work helps thousands of people live better, richer lives.

You will own the entire product development lifecycle, from initial research, to content creation, to user experience and seeing it through to product launch. Some of your day to day work will include the following:
Product Ideas
You will collaborate with your product development peers and brainstorm big product ideas to pursue. You’ll be an integral part in deciding which ideas have the potential to impact thousands of students.

Research
You’ll not only be performing market and competitive research, you’ll also talk to our students and learn how we dig deep to discover their deepest hopes, fears and dreams.

Scoping & Positioning
Working closely with the team, you’ll develop a product vision, define what our product is/is not, and work with designers and marketers to create the product name & logo.

Content Creation
Each product will bear the mark of your creativity and dedication. You’ll own the creation of the program including developing course outline, video scripts, presentations, case studies and customer emails that are read by hundreds of thousands of students.

Product Improvement
We are constantly updating our material to make sure we only deliver the best to our students. You will analyze customer feedback and make corresponding product improvement recommendations.

What We're Looking For
Product Development Experience

  • You are an exceptional copywriter. When it comes to copywriting, you’re second to none. You have a proven track record of taking on the appropriate voice and style to write compelling content, scripts and pitch copy. You understand that this is a very writing-intensive role and you are thrilled about it.
  • You have prior and relevant product development experience and know what it takes to bring a product from concept to market. You’re no noob to the product development lifecycle. You LOVE digging deep and are passionate about researching your customers. You have an impressive portfolio demonstrating your expertise, understanding of your customers, and products you’ve brought to life.
  • You have deep experience, interest and knowledge of IWT material. Preference will be given to those who have signed up for several IWT courses and know them inside and out.
Empathetic, Detail-Oriented and Passionate

  • You are highly empathetic. You understand people inside out and know how to get inside a customer’s head.
  • You are obsessed with getting it right. You’re known as the perfectionist and are willing to try something 100 different ways just to get it right.
  • You are a great teacher and communicator. Not only are you a master at breaking down complex topics into simple concepts, and communicate them in a way that beginners can understand, but you also do it in a way that’s 100X more valuable than what’s already out there.
  • You are passionate about online business. You may even have direct experience in online sales and conversion optimization (huge plus!).
This is a full-time, 100% remote position.
If you’re excited about this, we’d love to talk to you. Use the “Apply Now” button below to get in touch with us.

Do you enjoy working on a small team where you can have a significant impact? Are you willing to maintain a legacy .NET software stack in exchange for our open-mindedness on the best technologies to use for new initiatives going forward? Do you do your best work in an environment with sane timelines, a stable roadmap, and business owners who will seek out and appreciate your input? If so, we'd love to hear from you.

We have a smooth-running application built in the .NET framework which runs every aspect of our education business. Our 'Compass Points' web-based data management system connects office staff, tutors, and clients in a paperless environment, handling client intake, communication, billing, testing, and feedback. Instructors have an online center for lesson scheduling, notes, timesheets, and payroll.  We need a seasoned developer who can help to maintain the system and complete essential updates and extensions within the current framework. Our goal is to thoughtfully refactor and modernize this system over time.

We also seek to build out new functionality, including mobile-optimized sites for our instructors and clients as well as integrating and white-labeling tools to continue improving our delivery of web-based tutoring services.  These new initiatives are typically best served with different technology, so we seek someone who enjoys, and has experience with, weighing options and discussing such decisions. Recent modernization efforts include upgrading a smaller .NET application to Express and a pending migration to cloud infrastructure.

A good estimate is 25% of your time would be spent on the legacy .NET platform and 75% on new initiatives. You would be part of a small full-time team on the development side, collaborating regularly with the business owners and leaders of our operations, product/curricula, and marketing teams. We are growing our team and its capabilities at a steady, deliberate pace.

DESCRIPTION

Seeking an experienced Software Engineer to join a fast-growing education startup transforming the way 3+ million K-8 students learn Math and English. This role will report directly to the CTO.

You’ll have an immense impact on our company, product, and culture; a ton of autonomy and responsibility; and equity to match the weight of this role. If you're looking for an opportunity to both grow and do meaningful work, surrounded and supported by like-minded professionals, this is THE place for you.

Our mission is important to us, and we want it to be important to you as well: millions of students learn math using Front Row every month. Our early results show students improve twice as much while using Front Row than their peers who aren’t using the program. Front Row is growing at a rocketship pace, and is projected to make a massive impact on the world of education in the next few years.

In addition to being mission-driven, Front Row is a bastion of engineering best practices and a pioneer in the Functional Programming community: we're one of the very few companies in the world to use Haskell in production at scale, for all of our systems. We're active contributors of the open source community and regular hosts of Haskell meetups around the Bay. If you've ever written Haskell for the web, then you have used tools our engineers wrote. We combine advanced tooling and theory to support a vast range of products with a minimal team. Our competitors are regularly bewildered when they learn that we ship more than they do at 1/10th their size. Even our ops is type-safe.

Remote employees are welcome assuming BOTH of the conditions below can be met:

  • you're located in the continental US timezones
  • you are looking for an Individual Contributor-only position. We need you to be onsite in order to transition to the Dev Lead role

    What you will be doing

  • Architect, design and develop new web applications, tools and distributed systems for the Front Row ecosystem in Haskell, Flow, PostgreSQL, Ansible and many others. You will get to work on your deliverable end-to-end, from the UX to the deployment logic.
  • Potential to advance to Dev Lead and oversee the success of your team
  • Mentor and support more junior developers in the organization
  • Create, improve and refine workflows and processes for delivering quality software on time and without incurring debt
  • Work closely with Front Row educators, product managers, customer support representatives and account executives to help the business move fast and efficiently through relentless automation.

    ----

    REQUIREMENTS

  • A track record of working in, or leading, teams that rapidly ship high quality web-based software that provides great value to users and purchasers
  • Exceptional emotional intelligence and people skills
  • Understanding of Agile-flavored development processes and the balance between discipline and agility
  • Must be extremely organized and meticulous about details, while still being able to focus on the big picture of the product
  • A ton of startup hustle

    ----

    BENEFITS

  • Competitive compensation + benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • A lot of flexibility: while we all work towards the same goals, you’ll have a lot of autonomy in what you work on; option to work from home up to one day a week.
  • Catered lunch & dinner 4 days a week + snacks on snacks
  • Convenient office in SF right next to the Powell station
  • Awesome monthly team events + smaller get-togethers (board game nights, trivia, etc)

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

DESCRIPTION

Canopy Education Inc. is looking for a product-focused full-stack developer to help engineer the democratization of the college admissions process and higher education attainment.

There aren't many industries left that haven't been significantly disrupted by technology in some way, but you're reading about one right here! You will find many opportunities to apply high-leverage computer science (think machine learning, probabilistic reasoning, etc.) as well as plenty of opportunities for the more human side of the problem, as the current admissions process is a huge source of stress and confusion for students and parents alike. If we execute correctly, your work will impact the entire next generation of college graduates-to-be.

You will join a company whose culture centers around authenticity, excellence, and balance. You'll find that everyone likes to keep things simple and transparent. You'll find everyone to be goal-oriented and hands-off as long as you are a self-starter. And you'll feel right at home if you don't like sitting in front of a computer all day for hours on end.

But for those times we do sit in front of a computer, we are a polyglot functional programming shop, with emphasis on Haskell and Purescript, yet open to almost any high-level functional programming language used in industry. Our infrastructure and non-mission-critical tooling tends to be in whatever works best: sometimes Ruby, sometimes JavaScript, never PHP. We're functional pragmatists, basically, so bring your own.

We have a distributed company culture, so this position can be remote for the right person. You will be provided a setup stipend to help kit your home to your specifications, or you can get a co-working membership on us. Every quarter, we vote on a choice destination in the US and you get a travel stipend to physically gather under the Canopy with the rest of us. Once a year, we vote on a bigger destination (think Maui, Stockholm, Thailand, New Zealand, etc.) and work from there instead for a week or two while enjoying our lives.

----

REQUIREMENTS

You know you are right for this position if:

  • You have at least five years of professional software engineering experience, and at least two years of preference for a high-level programming language that's used in industry, like Haskell, Purescript, Elm, Clojure/Clojurescript, OCaml, Erlang, F#.
  • You are a self-starter and internally motivated, with a strong desire to be part of a successful team that shares your high standards.
  • You have great written communication skills and are comfortable with making big decisions over digital presence (e.g. video chat).
  • You have polyglot experience along several axes (dynamic/static, imperative/functional, lazy/strict, weird/not-weird).
  • ES6 + React ecosystem are bonuses.
  • You are comfortable with PaaS like heroku. Or even BaaS like Firebase. Your preferred db is postgres. You have basic but passable sysadmin skills.
  • You are fluent with git.
  • You instrument before you optimize. You test before you ship. You listen before you conclude. You measure before you cut. Twice.
  • You have good remote-work discipline and can stick to a schedule that we agree to ahead of time. You can have weird hours outside of our daytime core hours—they just have to be predictable and well communicated.
  • You don’t mind going to awesome places (usually warm and sunny) for a week or two every few months. You're ok with a bit of travel hacking to make it all work out.

    ----

    BENEFITS

We offer a competitive salary and a full suite of benefits, some of them unconventional, but awesome for the right person:

  • Medical, dental, vision insurance and 401k
  • Flexible hours with a 4-hour core (5-hour wall-clock) - plan the rest of your workday as you wish, just give us the majority of your most productive hours
  • Goal-based environment (as opposed to grind-based or decree-based environment; work smarter, not harder). We collaborate on setting goals, but you set your own process for accomplishing those goals. You will be entrusted with a lot of responsibility and you might even experience fulfillment and self-actualization as a result.
  • Daily physical activity/mindfulness break + stipend (take an hour and the company's money to make yourself more awesome by using it for yoga, tap-dance lessons, a new bike, massage, a surfboard - use your imagination! Just don’t sit at a computer all day!) Come back to work more relaxed and productive and share your joy with the rest of the team!
  • Equipment/setup budget so you can tool up the way you want. A brand new 15" MBP is standard issue if you have no strong opinions.
  • Quarterly travel stipend, as explained above. Short version: four quarterly trips per year = three smaller ones in US + one big one somewhere else.

Remember: We’re a startup. You’re an early employee. We face challenges. We have to ship. Your ideas matter. You will make a difference.

Basic Overview

We're looking for a senior software engineer who cares about building meaningful native applications that enrich the personal and professional lives of our customers. Safari is a leading subscription-based library of technical and professional development books and videos. Our content is used and enjoyed by a variety of developers, designers, students, and managers to improve their skills and be inspired by the best of their field.

In this role, you'll work in a small team focused on building compelling native applications on top of a family of highly available, robust, and scalable services. Our offline reader and video player, as well as its associated projects, are a central component of our platform and the future of our business, and not an afterthought to a conventional desktop experience. You will enjoy the pleasure of working with a set of colleagues that believe deeply in the lifelong importance of education and learning.

Skills & Requirements

We are interested in individuals with experience developing complex new applications for iOS and Android (but you don’t need to know both). Our Safari Queue app for iOS is in active development and on a relatively young codebase (18 months), and (Django) RESTful APIs. We have a dedication to testing, listening to our users, and working well across distributed teams. You’ll join a team that is dedicated to improving our existing apps while looking for opportunities to build entirely new products from scratch.

We are also interested in individuals who share our core beliefs in education, self-improvement, and work-life balance. We welcome diversity and non-traditional paths into the developer profession, and advocate strongly for hiring the right person as opposed to the right combination of tech keywords.

About Patchman, the product

Our customers comprise of large web hosting providers all around the globe. Security is – obviously – extremely important to them. However, there’s one layer of the security stack they have little or no control over: the code of their end users. Most websites use standard software as a foundation. Did you know that about 30% of the web is running on WordPress, Joomla or Drupal? Hackers continuously exploit security vulnerabilities in these foundations to upload and execute malware. Effectively, this allows hackers to run any malicious code they want. For example: to send spam, launch DDoS attacks or inflict far worse damage.

Patchman comes to the rescue! We offer web hosting providers a fully automated SaaS solution to index security vulnerabilities/risks and resolve them by automatically applying safe backported patches and by defusing malware. On top of that, we offer a web app that helps all stakeholders (including security officers, system administrators, helpdesk employees and end users) to operate Patchman and keep the web secure.

Your role:

As a Linux Security R&D Software Engineer you play a critical role in the organization. You will have full autonomy and responsibility in doing research and development for our product in two major areas: 1) our agent software that is running on our customer’s web hosting servers and 2) innovative methodologies to more efficiently and effectively perform scans, resolve security vulnerabilities and clean up malware. You need to have a deep understanding of Linux, C/C++ and security. Your work directly impacts the safety and workings of millions of websites around the world, so attention to detail and a high quality standard for your work are extremely important skills that we are looking for in evaluating our candidates.

Your responsibilities:

  • Design, build and deploy new features for our Linux agent software.
  • Achieve maximum performance and effectiveness by utilizing and developing the Linux kernel, Linux subsystems, Linux ecosystem and low level optimizations.
  • Research and develop innovative methodologies to mitigate security risks and issues.
  • Review and iterate architecture to ensure scale along with our incredible growth.
  • Review and iterate architecture to ensure sensitive data is stored securely at all times.
  • Review and iterate implementation of Linux agent software to ensure maximum performance and low resource usage along with our increasingly complex methodologies.
  • Work with external firms on security audits.

    Our requirements:

  • You have a true passion for the security field.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science or an equivalent professional education.
  • For Dutch candidates: Master’s degree in Kerckhoffs Institute for Computer Security is +1.
  • Several years of relevant work experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Advanced proficiency with C/C++.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of the Linux kernel, its ecosystem and subsystems.
  • Deep understanding and knowledge of security.
  • Must be comfortable with customer-facing roles including support and documentation.
  • Self-driven work ethic. You need to love taking initiative and seeing things through to completion.

We are a team of distributed software developers focusing on exciting challenges of voice, video and text: real-time communications. We are Mojo Lingo: Voice Applications that Work Like Magic.

At Mojo Lingo, the focus of everything we do is communications. Communications underlie everything humans do: every new idea that spread, every magnificent cathedral built, every successful revolution happened because the team behind it communicated effectively. Our mission is to bring seamless, contextual, powerful communications to the world.

We are seeking an experienced Web Front End Developer to join our team creating these applications. As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and depend on instant messaging and screen sharing for collaboration. In particular, we’re looking for someone who is a strong problem-solver and relishes a challenge in wrangling ambitious features and vanquishing complex bugs. Each person on our team is empowered to make decisions and enjoys great latitude in choosing the right tools and method for the job.

When we say “Front End” we are primarily looking for someone who can use the great power of JavaScript and Ruby on Rails to create interactive and ultimately usable web applications. The skills we think you’ll need the most are JavaScript (experience with frameworks like React, Angular, Ember or similar is required, but we’re looking for someone who is flexible), as well as experience delivering applications with Ruby on Rails. Obviously you should also be strong with HTML and CSS. If you’re not a great designer, not to worry. We’re more concerned about someone who can deliver the function over the form.

From the beginning we have been a distributed team, with headquarters in Atlanta, but our team members are located around North America, South America, and Europe. We build tools that enable people to communicate fluidly across a wide range of devices, technologies and physical spaces. We are known as application developers and often use technology like speech recognition, text-to-speech, Voice over IP (telephony and non-telephony), instant messaging/text chat and everything to do with the Web.

If you enjoy delighting people by making computers do unexpected things, all while solving complex, technical challenges in a unique industry, come join us!

Summary Requirements

Front End Developer - Rails & JavaScript

Must Haves - Soft Skills:

  • Curiosity and aptitude for learning complex systems
  • Excellent communication skills - since this is remote work, strong communication by phone/IM/email is critical
  • A commitment to deliver quality work on time
  • Mid-level developer with history of successful projects

    Must Haves - Technical Skills:

  • 2-5 years relevant experience
  • Experience developing web applications with Rails
  • Experience developing Single-Page Applications and other complex JavaScript-powered interactions
  • Strong understanding of HTML & CSS
  • Experience with Bootstrap and jQuery
  • Experience with at least one front-end JavaScript framework: React, Angular, Ember
  • Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals

    Nice-to-Have - Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with WebRTC
  • Experience with XMPP or other instant messaging systems
  • Experience with multiple JS frameworks
  • Basic design abilities

    Duties and Responsibilities

Drive development of important, customer-facing projects

  • Work on stories as described in our agile project management tool (Pivotal Tracker or Sprintly)
  • Join our daily standup calls to report status to the team
  • Take feedback from testers and users to identify and resolve application problems
  • Make recommendations on additional features or functionality
  • Diagnose failures in staging and production environments, understand the underlying issues, and resolve them
  • Maintain knowledge of JavaScript & Rails developer tools and best practices
  • Communicate with clients to understand requirements and report regularly on progress
  • Be self-sufficient delivering assigned tasks - we work as a team, but we expect the members of that team to pull their own weight and contribute independently

    Technology

This is some of the technology we use on projects with our clients. Not every project uses every technology, but we get to apply a diverse range of technology to solve the problems.

  • Version control: Git (Github)
  • Web backend: Rails
  • Web frontend: jQuery, Bootstrap, Candy
  • Asynchronous workers: Resque, Sidekiq
  • Development project management: Pivotal Tracker
  • Database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, LDAP, ElasticSearch

    Education and Experience

  • 2-5 years of relevant industry experience, majority with Ruby
  • Proven track record of delivering projects
  • Experience working on small teams preferred

    Location

Live wherever you like! This is a remote position. Of course, if you happen to be in the Atlanta area, you’re welcome to work out of our offices downtown. If you’re not in Atlanta, please be within 5 hours of US Eastern Timezone.

  • Are rock-solid on the fundamentals
  • Can convince others when you're right, and learn when you're wrong

    We:

  • Make static-analysis tools that are used worldwide by Fortune 500 companies, educational institutions, startups, and government agencies

    Bonus Skills:

Know one or more of these? So much the better.

  • Knowledge of general Java-analysis frameworks, such as Soot or WALA is a big plus
  • C, C++, Scheme, Python, or JavaScript
  • Machine code, especially x86, PowerPC, or ARM

We're hiring another iOS developer to help us build great native apps for Basecamp on all Apple platforms. You'll join an existing iOS team at Basecamp that's currently hard at work building a next-generation native app, but you'll also help keep our legacy catalogue of apps humming.

It's an offering for an experienced developer. You should have multiple shipped iOS apps under your belt (or one amazing one). You should be well-versed in iOS frameworks and APIs, but also be comfortable going off the golden path when necessary.

Our native development approach at Basecamp is hybrid (https://signalvnoise.com/posts/3743-hybrid-sweet-spot-native-navigation-web-content). We combine great native navigation around WebViews and ground-up native features to get the best of both worlds: Productivity through shared codebases on the web, and great fidelity through native.

So while the bulk of the work is in ObjC/Swift, you should also be reasonably comfortable with both JavaScript and Ruby. Enhancing a Rails application to extend the API or tinkering with Turbolinks (https://github.com/rails/turbolinks) to make it work with a native-JavaScript bridge shouldn't scare you.

It's a great time to join Basecamp and our iOS team. We've recently gone all-in on Basecamp (http://37signals.com). Millions of people have used Basecamp, and our iOS apps are both well-liked and growing rapidly as the way people use the system. The latest work we've been doing, and that you'll help us finish, will make that even more so the case.

We're looking for someone who's ready to do the best work of their career – without risking their health, sanity, or life outside of work. Basecamp is here for the long term. We've been in business for 16 years (5 before Basecamp, 11 since Basecamp), and we've been profitable the whole time. We're not beholden to or on any venture capitalist timeline. Private and profitable allows us to set our own course given what's best for our customers and employees.

We believe in taking great care of our incredible team (https://basecamp.com/team), most of whom have been with us for a long time. This means lovely benefits to help you be the best you possible: fitness and massage allowances, fresh fruit/vegetable subsidies, helping out with continued education, matching charity donations, and of course great healthcare and retirement assistance (401k match in the US). When you've been here for a year, you're also in on Fridays off in the Summer. It's a great package that's part of creating a great scene (https://signalvnoise.com/posts/1164-average-environments-beget-average-work).

Since we literally wrote the book on working remotely (http://37signals.com/remote/), we're of course also open to applicants from both the Americas and Europe (any further away is tough to get enough timezone overlap). We do, whoever, expect your proficiency with English to be at or close to a native speaker. If you happen to be in Chicago, we have a lovely office (http://37signals.com/office) for you to work from as you please. If not, we'll pay for co-working space or help you outfit a great home office.

Who You Are

We're looking for a full-time backend Rails developer to help build and maintain our social media management tool, Edgar. Edgar launched less than a year ago and has thousands of paying customers that will use the features you build every day. We’re growing ~20% month on month. (No pressure, right?)

You’ll be working on big, exciting projects like optimizing our Sidekiq queuing system to work JIT, creating an intelligent scheduler (analyze users’ data and figure out when they should be sending social media updates out), and migrating our customer analytics code to use a middle layer like segment.io. You’ll also have shared responsibility for choosing and mentoring a junior dev or two, Obi-Wan Kenobi-style.

(We have a dedicated, amazing, devilishly handsome front end Rails dev on the team - who totally didn’t write this listing or anything - so it’s ok if you’re not super comfortable with the front end stuff. You’ll be the go-to person for the backend stories, with the confidence and experience to back that up.)

Our stack is Rails 4, Ruby 2.1, Heroku, Postgres, Sidekiq + Redis, HAML, Coffeescript and React.js.

Our Dev Process

We do a fair amount of pair programming and a lot of code reviews, we love solid tests and CI, and we’re moving toward CD as quickly as we can. Basically? We’re constantly improving our process so we can create an ideal developer environment - low overheads, high transparency, and as flat as we can be. Estimates were inaccurate and irrelevant, so we dropped ‘em. Artificial deadlines weren’t doing it for us, so we switched from scrum to pure kanban and never looked back. When something isn’t working, we’re not afraid to throw it out and try something new - so if you have exciting ideas about the dev process and how to make your own job even easier, you’ll fit right in.

We’re striving for a flat organisation, so you’ll be choosing your own priorities from incoming stories (with support from customer service, marketing, and the rest of the company, of course). You’ll also have final responsibility for features, from inception all the way through to delivery, so your teammates know exactly who to shower with praise when you score a big win.

Benefits

We cover 75% of your health insurance for you and your family. We do 401k matching. We’re really into ongoing education, so of course we’ll cover any education materials you need to enhance your mad skills. (Right now we’re looking into using airplay.com to get some external pair programming in, too, so that’s cool.) We don’t have a fancy espresso machine or free beer on Fridays. We will pay you enough to be able to buy all the beer and espresso you like.

About Us

We’re a small team of 10 people, all working remotely across the US. We do a lot of collaborating and meme-swapping on HipChat, along with virtual team meetings on the regular and a twice-annual meetup week where we work together on cool projects all day and generally make fools of ourselves all night. We’re proudly bootstrapped and profitable, which means we get to turn down VC money a lot and keep doing things the way we like. We’re big fans of the Thoughbot Playbook. Oh, and doughnuts! We love those, too, man.

Requirements

  • You have senior level backend Rails skills and 3 years+ experience
  • You live anywhere in the USA or Canada
  • You love Ruby and you love Rails
  • You are passionate about improving the dev process and recognize the value of an awesome company culture

We are seeking an experienced Full Stack Ruby developer to join our team creating these applications. As a remote position, you will be largely autonomous, and will be required to work independently. In particular, we’re looking for someone who is a strong problem-solver and relishes a challenge in combating ambitious features and complex bugs. Each person on our team is empowered to make decisions and enjoys great latitude in choosing the right tools and method for the job.

What does “Full Stack” mean to us? When we deliver an application, we don’t just throw it over the wall. We think about how our customer will deploy the application and make sure we give them something they can run. That means we are looking for help not only writing the software, but also figuring out how to package it and how to troubleshoot and manage it in production. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable digging into operational issues and finding ways to make everything work that much more smoothly.

From the beginning we have been a distributed team, with headquarters in Atlanta, but our team members are located around the United States, South America, and Europe.

Must Haves - Soft Skills:

  • Curiosity and aptitude for learning complex systems
  • Excellent communication skills - since this is remote work, strong communication by phone/IM/email is critical
  • A commitment to deliver quality work on time
  • Mid-level developer with history of successful projects

    Must Haves - Technical Skills:

  • 2-5 years Ruby experience
  • Experience developing web applications with Rails
  • Strong grasp of software engineering fundamentals
  • Experience troubleshooting Linux Operating System issues
  • Familiarity with network tracing tools like Wireshark

    Nice-to-Have - Bonus Skills:

  • Experience with Voice over IP, especially any of Asterisk, FreeSWITCH, SIP, Telephony, etc
  • Experience with WebRTC
  • Experience with XMPP or other instant messaging systems
  • Basic skills with HTML, CSS & Javascript, but no design skills required
  • Knowledge of programming languages other than Ruby, such as C, Java, Javascript, Go, Erlang/Elixir, etc. We’re looking for someone with a capacity to learn.

    Duties and Responsibilities

  • Drive development of important, customer-facing projects
  • Work on stories as described in our agile project management tool (Pivotal Tracker or Atlassian JIRA)
  • Join our daily standup calls to report status to the team
  • Take feedback from testers and users to identify and resolve application problems
  • Make recommendations on additional features or functionality
  • Diagnose failures in staging and production environments, understand the underlying issues, and resolve them
  • Maintain knowledge of Ruby developer tools and best practices
  • Communicate with clients to understand requirements and report regularly on progress
  • Be self-sufficient delivering assigned tasks - we work as a team, but we expect the members of that team to pull their own weight and contribute independently

    Technology

This is some of the technology we use on projects with our clients. Not every project uses every technology, but we get to apply a diverse range of technology to solve the problems.

  • Version control: Git
  • Web backend: Rails
  • Web frontend: jQuery, Bootstrap
  • Asynchronous workers: Resque, Sidekiq
  • Development project management: Pivotal Tracker
  • Database: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, LDAP

  • 2-5 years of relevant industry experience, majority with Ruby
  • Proven track record of delivering projects
  • Experience working on small teams preferred

    Location

Live wherever you like! This is a remote position. Of course, if you happen to be in the Atlanta area, you’re welcome to work out of our offices downtown. If you’re not in Atlanta, please be within 5 hours of US Eastern Timezone.

The Gist

We're a stealth mode education start-up in the Los Angeles area that is re-inventing the way institutions utilize technology. The founders and many of the employees at the company were instructors themselves at universities so we have an intimate knowledge of how desperately this area needs to be properly served. We set out to build a solution to this problem and have since received nothing but support and positive feedback from many large players in the industry.

We are looking for a strong Ruby on Rails web developer to join our small but talented web team. We are flexible on location and are open to a remote developer as long as you are a strong communicator and have experience working remotely.

What you’ll be doing
Although there are many moving parts to what we are trying to accomplish, our flagship product runs as a Ruby on Rails web application that makes heavy use of Amazon’s cloud hosting and services environment. We have made great progress so far towards our goals, but are looking for an additional developer to help shift into the next gear. The web team itself is currently only a handful of people, so you’d be coming in near the ground floor with a chance to contribute ideas as much as code.

  • Resourceful - Finds ways over, around or through barriers
  • Team Player – Approachable, good collaborator
  • Fun - Good sense of humor as we LOVE to crack jokes and have fun
  • Great communicator - strong written and verbal communication

7 Reasons You’ll Love Working Here:

    1.) Stability

We've been in business since 2003 and have gone through many of the "rough patches" already. We are now a very strong and healthy company and aren't going anywhere for a very long time. In 2011 we were awarded a spot in the Inc 500/5000 coming in at #595.

    2.) Opportunity

Unlike most companies that want to keep your pay as low as they can, we do the opposite! Our goal is to pay you as much as we possibly can because when we do, we know that means you are creating tremendous value for our customers and our business.

We only want A level superstars so we offer above average compensation as well as performance-based bonuses.

    3.) Flexibility

Location doesn't matter to us. I don't care if you're working on the beach, your kitchen, or in your backyard. I don't care if you work from 6 a.m. - 2 p.m. Or from noon – 8 p.m… As long as you stay productive and produce results – that's all that matters. Note that some positions do require working in our Austin, TX office.

    4.) Freedom

We believe that all people deserve to be free... free to make their own choices... free to create their own success... and we strive to create a work environment that not only allows, but empowers you to be creative and take risks (well thought out of course).

No company politics or popularity contests. We are a team of "producers"... people who are results oriented and believe that each person should be responsible for themselves.

    5.) Great People

You'd be joining an existing team of superstars, many of which have been with the company for years. There is virtually no “drama” within the team that most companies have. Everybody is fun, passionate, great at what they do, and willing to help out. If you're that kind of person – you'll fit in perfect.

    6.) Training and Education

We invest heavily in our knowledge and skills. As part of our team you'll have access to an enormous library of "how to" and "self improvement" books and courses and we also reimburse our team when they invest in continued education.

    7.) Growth

We are growing at warp speed and have continued to increase profits year after year. This growth also means growth for you... in knowledge, skills, relationships and income.

    Company Description

The Healthy Back Institute is a fast growing natural health publishing and consumer products company with the focus on helping people to live without pain.

We are not a “start up”. We’ve been in business for over 10 years and have nearly a million customers in over 120 countries around the world. We are stable, profitable and there are no outside investors.

We offer flexible work hours, the option of working remotely (some roles, though we prefer people working together in the office) as well as lots of unusual perks. Our company headquarters is currently located in Austin, TX (Dripping Springs).

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re a company with a social media training past (http://LKRsocialmedia.com) and software future (http://MeetEdgar.com). Your focus will be on designing marketing materials, websites, and landing pages for both sides of our business, with an emphasis on making sure your creations fit in well with our existing designs. While we have already established our brand identity for both LKR Social Media and Edgar, you will have room to grow, reinvent, and evolve our brand.

You’ll be our dedicated web designer, with some branding and interface design work as well. That means:

  • creating websites and landing pages- making all of our sites functional and beautiful on mobile/tablet
  • designing keynote presentations
  • designing worksheets and other content marketing materials
  • ensuring all materials and web properties are consistent with our existing visual identity and on-brand
  • turning your designs into well coded HTML/CSS/PHP
  • split testing different design options to find the highest conversion
  • creating shareable images to complement our blog posts
  • creating ad images and other marketing assets

This is the right fit for someone who loves creating their own projects top to bottom. You’ll be proactively overseeing the look everything that our company produces - everything from fixing up poorly aligned text to creating innovative landing page designs. You’ll spot opportunities for large and small-scale improvements and will push us to make them. This is not a boring role and you’ll work at the micro and macro levels - being both our creative director and button-maker!

    ABOUT YOU

You are fast on your feet, dedicated to your craft, fun to be around and of course . . . an incredibly talented web designer. You dream of helping to define the design of an entire company, from home, on a flexible schedule. That’s why you’re perfect for this gig!

Beyond being a j’mazing designer, you can identify with our users and create the best possible experience for them as they interact with our company. This means that you’ll follow every step a visitor will take as they check out our blogs and resources, learn about our products (ranging from our social media training courses to our software product, Edgar), make purchases, and in and begin interacting with our products. Everything from opting in to asking us questions will be enjoyable and simple because you’ve designed it that way.

Our sites are in Wordpress - you must be experienced with the Genesis framework, along with a bit of Twitter Bootstrap. You’ll have the support of our WP developer for any advanced, fancy stuff that you might need help with. But you will be expected to make your own designs live. If you have experience with version control systems like Git or Mercurial, that’s a HUGE plus!

    ABOUT US

We are a 9-person team, and we all work from our own homes all over the country. You’ll do the same. That means you need to be great at time management - organizing your own projects and completing them on time. Here are some designs we love - if your style isn’t similar, we aren’t a good fit: http://pinterest.com/lkrsocialmedia/design-we-love/

We’re NOT your typical startup. We don’t work weekends or nights (for real) and we don’t expect you to, either. That being said, we love our work and take huge pride in creating experiences for our customers that are fun, useful, and rewarding. The work environment you’ll be a part of is casual, open, and relaxed. Two of our core values are “dorkiness” and “whimsility”. (Yes, we made that second one up.) You can read more about us at http://lkrsocialmedia.com/company/ and learn more about Edgar at http://meetedgar.com/.

You will be an independent contractor for our company and our only designer. You’ll report in to work PART-TIME, within normal US business hours, Monday through Friday. This is a stable job and we're looking for someone to grow with us long term. Please do not apply unless this sounds like your DREAM JOB. We’ll get back to you if we think you might be our DREAM designer!

You

You are a competent front end developer interested in extending existing libraries and writing new ones. Particularly, you wish to explore the intersection of everyday life and commerce with automation that lies at the heart of the Internet of Things. You will be happy creating tools for others to use, rather than focusing on the particular uses of a tool to suit a client’s needs.

SkyWard

We are the system or record for the most important stakeholders in the drone ecosystem: commercial operators, insurers and regulators. We are a company with decades of experience in both professional aviation and computer science. We cultivate a culture of transparency and empowered productivity; responsibility to provide above need to know.

The SkyWard platform is delivered through web and native mobile applications to cover all aspects of enterprise fleet management, from scheduling and dispatch to automated flight data processing and maintenance cycles. The current ontology we're working with reflects the global commercial UAS industry and regulatory landscape as they exist today. The horizon we're aiming for includes a time when aerial robots (AR) will pass autonomously through the air as easily as packets of information pass over the Internet.

Our main office is located on the Portland waterfront in a large loft space with bay windows, skylights, a mezzanine overlooking the open front area, and a second story patio. Our build-out includes both collaborative and quiet spaces for those employees joining us on a regular basis. Remote is fine, depending on the position. For this position, remote is possible based on a candidate’s skills and experience.

Your Role

Design and test three dimensional, geospatial visualization and interaction libraries for web mapping. Design and test smart document/workflow libraries for streamlining insurance, regulatory, and other processes. Express the scheduling, parameters, state, and outcome of automated processes in intuitive user interfaces. Your FTE will fluctuate between these three realms of responsibility.

Required

  • Three or more years of professional experience || equivalent education.
  • Experience with open source technologies for building modern web apps (angular, bootstrap, etc.).
  • Production experience with data visualization libraries such as threejs or d3.
  • Production experience with geospatial libraries such as leaflet.
  • Production experience extending existing libraries or writing new ones.
  • Experience working with development teams to identify features requiring expanded or new libraries.
  • Understanding of data transport protocols, common web formats such as JSON and XML, and basic web security.
  • Ability to contribute to API development as a code and technical stakeholder.

    Bonus

  • Some experience with Java application development (Maven, etc.).
  • Familiarity with technologies for front-end automation (Grunt, etc).
  • Experience working within a formally agile team process.
  • Industry experience; manned/unmanned aviation, fleet/inventory management, system-of-record software.

    The Process

    You Apply

Fill out this simple web application and provide one code sample solving a non-trivial and interesting problem within the realm of front end visualization and interaction. A hosted repository is required; we are agnostic RE: bitbucket v. github. Make sure to include instructions for quickly compiling and/or running in an interpreted environment.

    First Interview

We get to learn who you are “off the page”. You interview us about our product and culture. Usually done by G+ Hangout or Skype.

    Second Interview

We pair coding and architecting sessions with Dana Maher and CTO Marcos Osorno, either face to face at our headquarters in Portland or remotely.

    Decision

We confer internally and get back to you with any follow-up queries

    Audition Period

We hire everyone through the same process. It starts with an offer to audition with us for six weeks. This can be full-time or part-time. It gives us both a chance to actually work together and see if we're truly a good fit for each other.

    Employment

After a successful audition, candidates will move to full-time, salaried status with benefits including:

  • Competitive salary and early equity at an exciting, venture-backed startup
  • $3,600/yr to support your remote office setup (unless you're at the office in PDX)
  • One “in-person” week per qtr in PDX (or other location) at company expense
  • $1,000 allowance for your own, personal drone... everyone in the company enjoys flying these things!
  • Choose your own smartphone ($50/month plan allowance + $250 purchase allowance)
  • Health and Dental
  • Paid vacation as well as an unlimited unpaid vacation policy

Reaktiv Studios is on the lookout for a senior developer to join us in providing and maintaining bespoke WordPress solutions to our valued clients. This is not an entry-level developer position; candidates need to be able to jump into complex code scenarios and hit the ground running. We’re not all tied-up in years, but typically this is a developer with five or more years of relevant development experience.

You likely call yourself a full-stack developer.

Let us tell you what that means.

Our ideal developer is skilled at ALL of the following:

  • PHP
  • Javascript
  • MySQL
  • CSS and CSS pre-processors
  • Git and similar version control tools.

You’re equally comfortable painting the car and building the engine (from scratch). Familiarity with WordPress is a bonus, but not a must.

As Reaktiv is a 100% remote company, the ideal candidate has experience managing that arrangement. Self-motivated and a good communicator– these are key traits we will be looking for in an individual.

We are a lean and mean company, but we’re proud to offer a competitive compensation package that includes paid time off, a flexible work schedule, and continued education (conferences, training seminars, books, etc.).

Please, United States-based candidates only, and no recruiters.
