Hi, I’m Brian, Director of Product at Customer.io,{linebreak} {linebreak}I’d first like to introduce you to Fly, our current design system. We’ve reached a point where Fly is struggling to scale and hiring you is the piece of the puzzle we need to invest in leveling it up. I’m looking for someone to join our product team and be the vanguard of this effort!{linebreak}{linebreak}Our product work is done by squads: small groups of product managers, engineers, and designers like you, focused on solving a customer problem. In addition to wrangling our design system, you'll also be an integral part of a squad, helping to define and design the user experience.{linebreak}{linebreak}The work you do here will raise the bar for the everyday communications we all receive. It drives us crazy when we get useless emails and notifications that feel like spam from companies we admire. Despite how poorly some companies communicate, we don’t think marketers are bad people. In fact, we believe they care about their customers, don’t want to waste their time, and simply don’t have the tools to do better. At Customer.io we’re on a mission to give our customers the superpower of sending and tracking great email, SMSes and push notifications. {linebreak}{linebreak}Our customers are marketers, growth hackers, and engineers who are always dreaming up fresh ideas for how to be genuine and personal in their messages to customers. We help businesses send relevant messages based on what people do or don’t do when using a web or mobile app. {linebreak}{linebreak}Sound like the next step in your career? Read on and apply!{linebreak}{linebreak}P.S. Identify more as a UX Designer? UX Engineer? Don’t worry about it - let us know if you think this is the place for you.{linebreak}{linebreak}**What will you be doing?**{linebreak}{linebreak}- Taking over Fly, the component library we use to construct our app in close partnership with our front-end engineers and your fellow designers. Understand what works, what doesn’t, and take ownership of improving it.{linebreak}- Standardize and document these modular components, so the entire team knows how, where, and why to use them{linebreak}- Own UI and UX design for product features while partnering with engineering throughout the creation process{linebreak}- Use both data and customer research to validating your designs and refine concepts for new features{linebreak}- Separate trend from truth when it comes to design systems -- meaningfully leverage best practices, but don't be afraid to ignore the buzzwords and forge a path (and a Medium post) yourself!{linebreak}{linebreak}**You’ll be working with...**{linebreak}{linebreak}- Ivana, Sr UI/UX designer, to take features from concept to Customer.io! Together, you’ll collaborate on distilling user feedback into user goals, wireframes, visual designs, prototypes -- whatever the team needs to make our customers’ lives easier.{linebreak}- Kieran, Sr Product Designer, who will be your visual design partner as you corral our design system and take it to the next level.{linebreak}- Brian, our Director of Product, to figure out what we need to build next for our customers. With Brian you’ll focus a lot on customer problems and outcomes in order to cultivate an iterative design-driven team culture. Brian joined last year from Adobe, where he spent years building products for designers.{linebreak}- A team of front-end engineers with a passion for design and usability. They’ll be close partners: you’ll laugh together, you’ll cry together, you’ll do the best work of your lives together.{linebreak}{linebreak}**What will you bring to the table?**{linebreak}{linebreak}**You’re a natural systems thinker**and that’s exactly what makes you a great designer. Grids, modules, and typographic scale are your paintbrush. You see nonstandard, one-off interfaces as a rough design critique. You enjoy applying your systems in service of customer needs just as much as you enjoying crafting those systems.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Your north star**is making a design system and user experience harmonize perfectly. You realize it’s not just about a pattern library, it’s about constraining the ways the patterns can be assembled so they accelerate the both process of designing a product and empowering its user.{linebreak}{linebreak}**You’re hungry to learn**, and you love to understand how things work under the hood. You thrive in technical conversations with engineers where you need to balance constraints with design goals.{linebreak}{linebreak}**You’re scrappy and self-directed**when it comes to problem-solving and working on multiple projects at once. You’re looking to work with a startup where you’ll be responsible for the impact you make and have a lot of freedom. Working with folks in different time zones will be standard issue for you around here, so being able to stay determined, even when the answers aren’t in front of you, is essential. {linebreak}{linebreak}**You are a proactive communicator**. You strive to be articulate and empathetic in your interactions and believe in “working out loud” to share work early and helpfully. This might mean writing out your questions for the team, jumping on a quick call to clarify feature requirements, or building wireframes after documenting your assumptions.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Bonus!**Not a requirement, but shout about it if you have experience with... {linebreak}- Writing the HTML, CSS, and JS for the design system you create{linebreak}- Marketing Technology and/or SaaS Companies{linebreak}{linebreak}**Why should you work with Customer.io?**{linebreak}{linebreak}Work at our head office in Portland, OR or anywhere in the world you want. We want to enable you to do your best work, and this is how we aim to do that—{linebreak}{linebreak}**Competitive salary**- We’re offering $80,000-$100,000 USD for this position, with flexibility for location and experience.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Equity**- You'll own a piece of the company. It's not a get-rich-quick deal, but if you stay around for a while, we're planning to be a long-lasting company and your piece of it may be a nice bonus. {linebreak}{linebreak}**Big Impact**- Our team is small, but growing quickly. The work you do will materially impact how successful we are as a company. {linebreak}{linebreak}**Great Tools**- Everyone in the company has a budget for a computer, a motorized standing desk, Steelcase Leap office chair, external monitor, and anything else you'd like to get your job done.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Health Benefits**- We pay 100% of your premiums for medical, dental and vision. {linebreak}{linebreak}**Paid Parental & Medical Leave**- including adoption{linebreak}{linebreak}**Retreats**- We get our whole company together once a year. We've had retreats in Iceland, Barcelona, and Romania. {linebreak}{linebreak}**Vacation**- Rest and recuperation is important. We offer unlimited paid time off with a 2-week minimum per year.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Diversity statement**{linebreak}{linebreak}At Customer.io, we’re committed to building a diverse environment, and encourage minority applicants. So far, we have team members in France, Germany, Canada, and all over the US. Our CEO and CTO grew up in Singapore and Arkansas respectively, but met in New York City. Our company culture is always evolving; people from different backgrounds bring valued perspective and thoughtfulness to the work that we do and the culture we foster.{linebreak}{linebreak}Customer.io provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or genetics. In addition to federal law requirements, Customer.io complies with applicable state and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment in every location in which the company has facilities. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leaves of absence, compensation and training. Basically, we follow the law, but also like you for who you are!{linebreak}{linebreak}**Come Join Us!**{linebreak}{linebreak}Apply below, and make sure you tell us why you’re interested in the position! We’ve added a few questions that will also help us understand how you think. {linebreak}{linebreak}- Provide a resume or LinkedIn profile{linebreak}- Provide a portfolio or a few work samples{linebreak}- What’s the difference between an atom and a molecule?{linebreak}- When are you allowed to break the grid?{linebreak}- What do you think is the most interesting (or least interesting, red-herring) debate going in design today? {linebreak}- Creamy or crunchy peanut butter?{linebreak}

{linebreak}Hi! We’re Action Verb.{linebreak}{linebreak}We build two Infrastructure-as-a-Service Platforms that empower organizations worldwide.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our products include BrickFTP, a hosted file sharing service for business, and Vae Platform, a unique web hosting platform with an integrated CMS system.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our company consists of 15 (but growing to 19 by the end of the year) full time USA-based staff, as well as sales and support outposts in France, Germany, and Latin America.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our infrastructure platforms are used by over 2,000 enterprises and SMBs, including Mozilla, Canonical, UPS, DirecTV, GoPro, Marriott, and more.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our Success Strategy{linebreak}{linebreak}We’ve been able to achieve the rare combination of high double-digit annual growth and industry leading profitability.{linebreak}{linebreak}We do it by aggressively recruiting the absolute best and brightest people and structuring our company in a way that makes them want to work here forever.{linebreak}{linebreak}It’s easy to say, but exceptionally hard to execute. Here’s how we do it.{linebreak}{linebreak}We Practice Holacracy{linebreak}{linebreak}We are one of the early adopters of Holacracy, a new style of running an organization in a self-organizing manner that draws inspiration from agile software development and lean manufacturing processes.{linebreak}{linebreak}Rather than hiring people for exactly one job description, we instead look to find well rounded team members with skills in software engineering, design, marketing, sales, and our other needs who are interested in filling multiple roles within the organization.{linebreak}{linebreak}As a self-organizing team, our people have multiple roles and our role descriptions are regularly updated via small iterations. As their interests change and our needs change, the roles people fill change dynamically over time.{linebreak}{linebreak}"Most startups believe in iteration of their products. Now they need to apply the same thinking to their organizations."{linebreak}– Adam Pisoni, Yammer co-founder & CTO{linebreak}{linebreak}Holacracy is not unstructured: you’ll have a clear understanding of your current roles and responsibilities, as well as a set of rules and processes for changing those roles and responsibilities in real time.{linebreak}{linebreak}Even though Holacracy is a lot to learn, we have a great onboarding process and the rest of our team will guide you through your first few months. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a weeklong official Holacracy training event at our expense.{linebreak}{linebreak}MORE ABOUT OUR HOLACRACY PRACTICE→{linebreak}{linebreak}We also practice Open Book Management, meaning that we share the exact details of our Balance Sheet and P&L Statement with our entire team in real-time, ensuring that our staff has the data they need to treat the business as if it were their own.{linebreak}{linebreak}MORE ABOUT OPEN BOOK MANAGEMENT→{linebreak}{linebreak}Our team members work from home and choose their own hours, allowing them to make time for family, recreation, vacations, or anything that is important to them.{linebreak}{linebreak}Every full-time team member gets 10 company-wide holidays per year as well as 20 paid time off days intended to be used for vacations. Go have fun. Don’t work all the time.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our team members also work hard, are constantly learning, and accomplish a ton for the company in the time that they are working.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our team spends at least 12 days together face-to-face per year at four to six in-person meetings spread out through the year and hosted all over the country. We try to do these meetings in cities that are fun to visit. In the last few years, we’ve been to Austin, Orlando, Minneapolis, San Diego, Las Vegas, New York City, Detroit, and Fort Lauderdale.{linebreak}{linebreak}Design Skills We’re Looking For{linebreak}{linebreak}This position is designed to appeal to designers who are not afraid to get their hands dirty writing code. You will be working on web applications, mobile apps, desktop apps, marketing websites, and email.{linebreak}{linebreak}We are looking for candidates who bring the following skills to the table:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Experience with web application design, marketing website design, and offline (print) design{linebreak}{linebreak}* Comprehensive understanding of UI/UX principles{linebreak}{linebreak}* Solid web front-end development skills in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Even though we have a great team to help you integrate your designs with our applications, in order to be a great application designer, we expect that you can implement enough JavaScript to make your designs come to life (even in a basic way).{linebreak}{linebreak}* Experience and interest in both actual application design and marketing design. We want our designers to be able to work on both sides.{linebreak}{linebreak}* History designing and supporting actual applications that have seen production usage with a large userbase.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Our best applicants tend to have at least 5 years history of producing marketing websites and web or mobile applications.{linebreak}{linebreak}We expect to see an extensive portfolio that includes both static websites and applications.{linebreak}{linebreak}Some of Our Core Beliefs{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe that everyone in the company should have programming skills. We want everyone here to be able to take their ideas and bring them to life. For designers, that means you have to be able to write code. It doesn’t mean you have to be an expert, but you should at least be able to implement intermediate-level jQuery and also work with React.{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe that allowing and supporting 100% remote work gives us access to great people we wouldn’t otherwise be able to hire. We tend to hire folks who are later in their careers, which means they usually have their family established somewhere. By offering remote work, we can hire the best people, no matter where they’re located.{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe that the best way we can acquire top talent is by being an amazing place to work. Work from home, travel with the team, and surround yourself with top tier people at Action Verb. Read about everything we’ve done to make working at Action Verb great.{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe that building great infrastructure and platform products requires a great internal infrastructure. We have Continuous Integration, a full staging environment, and considerable test coverage. We built our own application deployment system. We self-manage our server environment on Amazon Web Services and custom hardware.{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe that engineers should support what they build. We expect our teammates to take responsibilty for the engineering decisions they make. If there are performance problems in production, nobody should have to chase anyone down. All engineers participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and all engineers speak to customers.{linebreak}{linebreak}We believe in building products that we actually use ourselves. We are our own toughest critics and we put all of our products through their paces every day.{linebreak}{linebreak}READ THE REST OF OUR CORE BELIEFS→{linebreak}{linebreak}Salary and Pay{linebreak}{linebreak}As you might expect from a company that is so open, we also post our salary information right here in the job post. We will pay you $100,000 in your first year, plus a great benefits package, and a $2,500 signing bonus to purchase a new computer.{linebreak}{linebreak}After your first year with Action Verb, we will update your salary based on the value that you have been able to demonstrate for the company. We continue to update salary levels every year. It is possible to reach a pay level of double the starting salary if you come in and absolutely crush it.{linebreak}{linebreak}We fully pay for your health insurance (exact plan details depend on your state of residence), and we’ll pick up the tab for 50% of your spouse or family if they wish to also join the healthcare plan. We want your family to be healthy.{linebreak}{linebreak}We recognize that other companies may offer higher initial salary offers or signing bonuses, but at Action Verb, we know that for our ideal candidate, the exact level of pay is just one criteria by which they choose where to work. Our goal is to offer the greatest work environment possible and pay people well enough to make it possible for them to join the team. Come learn our way of working, take on as many roles as you can, and establish yourself as a valuable asset to us. Then after your first year, we’ll re-evaluate your salary and make sure it’s more than fair, given the value you’ve been able to generate for the company.{linebreak}{linebreak}Plus, you can join Action Verb Risk Free because of our $7,500 Quitting Bonus Within Your First 90 Days.{linebreak}{linebreak}We get it. Holacracy is new. Working remote is hard. We love these things about our culture, but you might not be sure if you do. Or maybe you just don’t trust us that we really do embody the Core Beliefs on this webpage. To our prospects who may be on the fence about joining Action Verb, we want to make one more offer to push you over the edge and convince you to join us.{linebreak}{linebreak}If you don’t like working at Action Verb for any reason, quit within the first 90 days and receive a $7,500 quitting bonus. That should be enough to keep you and your family afloat while you decide on your next path. We hope that you won’t take us up on the offer, but we want you to feel good knowing that it’s there.{linebreak}{linebreak}Ready To Apply?{linebreak}{linebreak}Working here isn’t for everyone, but if you think it might be for you, please apply.{linebreak}{linebreak}We only read cover letters in our first screening round, so make sure yours counts. The following are topics we’d like to see addressed in your cover letter:{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}* Why does this opportunity specifically appeal to you?{linebreak}{linebreak}* How well do you align with Our Core Beliefs? Is there anything you would add or change?{linebreak}{linebreak}* Why would working remotely for Action Verb change your life for the better?{linebreak}{linebreak}* Are you familiar with Holacracy? Any questions or concerns?{linebreak}{linebreak}* What’s lacking in your current work arrangement that we could improve?{linebreak}{linebreak}* What are your philosophies on design?{linebreak}{linebreak}* What does designing great software look like?{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}We look forward to reading your letter!
