What is Hudl?

Hudl is a software company that makes sports video analysis tools for coaches and athletes. Teams upload their game film to our site, study it, and 'break it down' by adding text notes, ink telestrations, and tagged metadata.

Coaches then share the edited segments of video with groups of players on their team. Athletes can consume the annotated video on their iOS and Android devices throughout the week in preparation for their next game. If an athlete notices a great play, he or she can highlight it to appear on a public profile for fans, parents, and recruiters to see.

What do Front-end Designers do at Hudl?

We have a perfect place carved out for those people who live in a world between pure design and pure development. Front-end Designers are responsible for writing quality front-end code and keeping the visual bar high in our apps. They're constantly challenging us to keep our code and styles consistent using our internal UI pattern library.

They begin by assisting the user research process with coaches of all sports to understand latent needs beyond just the basics of what they say they want. It's important for our entire team to see and hear or themselves the problems facing our users. There’s no requirements doc handed down from on high.

Next, they rough out concepts to test with other designers, developers, QA, and their project manager. They sketch, they mock, and they prototype the key interactions. And often, they throw big pieces out when it doesn't click in a user study.

Once the concepts do start clicking, Front-end Designers team up with a visual and/or interaction designer to that everything looks great and feels even better.

But, designers don’t stop after the first release. They work closely with PM’s as we roll-out improvements so that we can refine it as the product gets real-world use. We can selectively enable new features to small groups of coaches and athletes to validate that we’re on the right track.

Practically, all this means you carry the squad with elegant front-end code and purposeful visual design. Those are the non-negotiable requirements. We also expect that you:

  • Excel in giving and receiving respectfully blunt feedback and critique.

  • Have strong beliefs, loosely held, about what’s best for the product.

  • Know how and when to tactfully say, “No.'

  • Are unafraid to make small, quick changes and launch them as experiments to validate your assumptions and opinions.

  • Think that great copywriting is an essential part of creating clear user interfaces.

  • Consciously choose the best medium and fidelity to convey your ideas at each stage of a project. In other words, you know the universe exists outside of Sublime Text and Photoshop.

  • Can tell the story of a product or service with sharp copy and crisp imagery—people get fired up after your presentations.

Tell me about the team I would work with (Team Sports).

The Team Sports tribe at Hudl is responsible for the first half of our company mission: “Help Coaches Win.” We are building tools that coaches can use to gain an edge on their opponents using a medley of video, annotations, and analytics.

You’ll work within one of the six squads that comprise the tribe: Mobile, Core, Recruit, Football, Basketball, and Conversion. Two more squads are on the way in 2015. Each squad includes one designer, one or two developers, a quality assurance analyst, and a project/product manager.

How should I apply? Any advice?

Send us a cover letter that relates your experience to what you think we need here at Hudl. Be sure to include a link to your portfolio or, at the very least, links to pieces of your past work.

We place the majority of our evaluation on your portfolio. Make sure it’s up-to-date, hosted online, and includes descriptions of your specific role on each project. Bulleted lists don’t help as much as short stories about your process and what you learned. Treat your portfolio like a product itself and a reflection of your craft as a designer. Do that and you’ll have a great head start.

Telecommuting

We love our remote workers. Currently, about 25% of our product team works remotely so we're set up really well for it. But we can only hire if you live/work in or are moving to California, Texas, New York, Massachusetts, Nebraska or the United Kingdom. We pay for travel back to HQ in Lincoln, NE office every 6-8 weeks.

We Know Titles Are Confusing. Here's a Comparison of Hudl's Design Openings:

On the Product Team, designers are responsible for three main things: visual design, interaction design, and front-end code. Here's how those responsibilities are shared across the three roles:

  • Product Designers do all three and typically work as the solo designer on a squad.

  • UI Designers own the visual and interaction design and often team up with another designer on a squad.

  • Front-end Designers handle front-end development along with visual design. They will also pair-up with another designer from time-to-time.

On the Marketing Team, we are also hiring Interactive Designers who design and build our public (non-app) website. They also promote the Hudl through regular print, email, and web campaigns.

What do Product Designers do at Hudl?

We make the above process as headache-free as possible. We lead small, cross-functional teams in creating and shipping clear, delightful user experiences. Here’s how we do it.

First, designers perform user research with coaches of all sports to understand latent needs beyond just the basics of what they say they want. Designers learnwhy first-hand. There’s no requirements doc handed down from on high. Next, they rough out concepts to test with developers, QA, and their project manager. They sketch, they mock, and they prototype the key interactions. And often, they throw big pieces out when it doesn't click in a user study.

Once the concepts do start clicking, Product Designers start crafting the interface first (HTML & CSS for web products, Interface Builder for iOS, etc.). They team up with a developer to improve the code and get it wired into the back-end systems. Finally, they ensure the visuals are consistent throughout and match our brand styles.

But, designers don’t stop after the first release. They work closely with PM’s as we roll-out improvements so that we can refine it as the product gets real-world use. We can selectively enable new features to small groups of coaches and athletes to validate that we’re on the right track.

Practically, all this means you carry the squad with beautiful visual design, thoughtful interaction design and production-ready HTML and CSS (Sass, actually). Those are the non-negotiable requirements. We also expect that you:

  • Excel in giving and receiving respectfully blunt feedback and critique.

  • Have strong beliefs, loosely held, about what’s best for the product.

  • Understand that technical, business, and design constraints factor into every product decision.

  • Know how and when to tactfully say, “No.'

  • Are unafraid shipping small, quick experiments to validate your assumptions and opinions.

  • Think that great copywriting is an essential part of creating clear user interfaces.

  • Consciously choose the best medium and fidelity to convey your ideas at each stage of a project (not every project goes sketch, Photoshop, HTML).

  • Can tell the story of a product or service with sharp copy and crisp imagery—people get fired up after your presentations.

About You
  • You love tech. You love software and are fascinated by cutting edge hardware. You read about it when you unwind at the end of the day. You know which companies are creating novel solutions to hard problems with technology. You can’t stop showing other people about the latest cool app you found.
  • You’re naturally curious. You don’t stop with the obvious but instead think about what might happen in the extreme cases. You constantly ask questions and dig deeper to learn more.
  • You’re empathetic. You might not be a coach, athlete, or recruiter, but you could think like one when it comes to using Hudl. You think critically about their experience and understand that there is more than one way to do things.  It would drive you mad if that experience was awful.
  • You never stop learning. You constantly want to know more. Maybe it’s about QA or software, maybe it’s about other topics - doesn’t matter. You’re absolutely hungry for more knowledge and ideas, and you can show us how you’ve used that to improve yourself.

Things You’ll Do
  • You’ll test. Big surprise, right? But it’s really important. Great software always has a phenomenal tester behind it. You’ll write test plans for brand new features and enhancements to document your steps. You’ll test standard user paths and think creatively about an edge-case or two. When your skills demand it, you implement and run some automated tests, too.
  • You’ll think like a user. We see QA as “the user before the user.” How will you get there? Everyone at Hudl is expected to interact with our users directly. That can happen by shadowing our Coach Support team on the phones, combing through feedback submissions, or conducting user interviews. You’ll be the voice for our users, ensuring we build, test, and set high standards for the best software experience we can provide. You’ll constantly ask yourself, “Would someone love to use this?”
  • You’ll be an integral part of the team. As a QA, you won’t just be responsible for testing. You’ll be involved in the planning and development of a feature from the start. You’ll work side-by-side with talented Developers, Designers, and Product Managers every day making sure Hudl stays on top of its game.
  • You’ll deploy code directly to production a lot. That's right, QA does the deploying at Hudl and we average a dozen pushes to production each day. Ultimately, you’ll have the final word about when a feature is done and ready to be in the hands of coaches, athletes, and recruiters.

About Hudl
We make software that helps sports teams and athletes win. Everything from the Superbowl to high school scrimmages, even a Saturday on the golf course with your buddies. With over 7 million users, we’re on track to capture and make those moments meaningful for everyone involved.

To do that, we have to build great software. So we move fast and get insights directly from our users. Our teams stay small and nimble, which means everyone chips in to make our product awesome for our users.

The Benefits
  • Awesome health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401k retirement plan with company match
  • Free lunch every day in our Lincoln, Neb. office
  • Unlimited vacation for US employees, and 25 days plus bank holidays in the UK
  • Annual stipend to travel to to a professional conference to build your mad skillz
  • Annual company retreat to Las Vegas to celebrate our goals and prepare for the next year
  • A stipend to build or buy your work computer. After 2 years, you get to do it all over again. The old one is all yours.

Do you love sports and technology? Good. Because for you, there isn’t a better PM job on the planet.

Hudl builds software that helps sports teams connect around the video and data they need to win. Coaches and athletes love us because we make watching and analyzing video on their phone, tablet, or browser so damn easy. We work with over 300,000 coaches and 1,000,000 athletes across 20 sports from Pop Warner to the pros.

Dominating this role means you:

  • Can motivate a hyper-talented squad of engineers to crank out awesome products.

  • Lead the team from start to finish - concepting, building, deploying, and learning from what just went out the door (often, start to finish is a matter of hours).

  • Aren't afraid to chip in with your strengths when deadlines are tight.

  • Can deftly scope a big, bold vision down to bite-sized work items and execute them.

  • Focus on product excellence almost as much as process excellence and can play a major role in user research, design brainstorming, and product decisions.

  • Are an agile/scrum/kanban/DevOps ninja with a sixth-sense when it comes to the right amount of process for a task.

  • Are passionate about cutting-edge approaches for building and maintaining highly-available, scalable cloud-based architectures.

  • Are known for supercharging the processes of the whole company by building top-notch tools for development, testing, and deployment.

Some products we're working on now:

  • Two years into a transition from a Monolithic to Microservices architecture, we are focussing on adding new features to make distributed system programming easier. A recent feature addition enables durable asynchronous processing via RabbitMQ.

  • We are building out our automated regression suite of tools to make writing and maintaining tests for web, iOS and Android easier. In addition to frameworks we are writing tools to make running the suite or sub-sets of the suite easy, education and documentation so others can focus on authoring their own tests.

  • Using Chef to provision each of our server types. This effort will enable better auto-scaling of our application servers and position us to move from EC2-Classic to VPC.

  • Building out our Data Warehouse using S3, EMR, Hive and Spark to enable any Hudl employee to ask and answer questions across our various data sources. This includes application and server logs, SQL Server, MongoDB, ZenDesk, Jira, etc.

  • Today our application is within a single AWS region. We are preparing to enable multi-region deployments to ensure fast performance globally.

We

  • Believe culture matters more than anything else.

  • Are a team of nerds, designers, marketers and former jocks who love sports and tech.

  • Have a profitable, kick-ass product that is changing coaches’ and athletes’ lives.

  • Are as passionate about winning as the people we serve.

  • Want you to learn something every day.

  • Promise you’ll love coming to work every day.

Working with Us, You Can:

  • Enjoy an unlimited vacation policy.

  • Sleep soundly with our paid health insurance and retirement plans.

  • Get hooked up with free tickets to Div. I and professional sporting events.
