πŸ‘‰ Please reference you found the job on Remote OK as thank you to us, this helps us get more companies to post here!

When applying for jobs, you should NEVER have to pay to apply. That is a scam! Always verify you're actually talking to the company in the job post and not an imposter. Scams in remote work are rampant, be careful! When clicking on the button to apply above, you will leave Remote OK and go to the job application page for that company outside this site. Remote OK accepts no liability or responsibility as a consequence of any reliance upon information on there (external sites) or here.

HigherEducation.com partners with many of the most recognizable names in the online education industry to help them build their programs and expand student bases with our 75M annual site visitors. We also love to use cutting edge technologies to make developer life enjoyable and more productive.{linebreak}{linebreak}We’re looking for an experienced, hands-on hybrid role of JavaScript Engineer and data scientist to join a major initiative at a critical point in our company’s growth. The ideal candidate (which means you, right?) will be responsible for debugging existing code bases and innovating new solutions through data science research. Other duties include enhancing & maintaining the core product, creating & maintaining the tests for various code repositories,{linebreak}{linebreak}The position requires:{linebreak}- Possess a rock-solid background in Computer Science (minimum BS in Comp Sci or related field) or at least 5 years of development experience in a challenging, fast paced environment.{linebreak}- Demonstrated advanced proficiency in one or more of the following fields: Natural Language -{linebreak} Processing, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Recommendation Systems.{linebreak}- Server-side JavaScript (e.g. Node.js - Express, Koa, Hapi).{linebreak}- Client-side JavaScript (e.g. React, MobX, Redux).{linebreak}- Build tools (e.g. Gulp, Grunt, Browserify, Webpack).{linebreak}- Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms a plus.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Desired qualifications include experience with:{linebreak}- Advanced degree is a plus but you're not just an academic -- you have hands-on software engineering experience applying complex algorithms to real-world problems at scale.{linebreak}- Work effectively in agile teams; get stuff done with minimal guidance and zero BS, help others and know when to ask for help. Clearly communicate complex technical and product issues to non-technical team members, clients, etc.{linebreak}- Bonus points for experience implementing machine learning algos on GPU's or other hardware acceleration!{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}What it's like {linebreak}{linebreak}Last year, we had a blast. We personally enjoy getting rid of legacy code & turning servers off in favor of clean, new, tested services.{linebreak}{linebreak}Each project is fairly small in scope with a large amount of flexibility and freedom to discuss & find the best architecture for the job and for the team. Usually, a single person heads up a project, collaborates with another for architecture & solutions, and eagerly looks forward to launching (rather than endlessly polishing).{linebreak}{linebreak}- Slack for conversations.{linebreak}- Asana for project tracking & deliverables.{linebreak}- Github for code collaboration.{linebreak}- DroneCI for CI & CD.{linebreak}{linebreak}Being in a USA timezone is highly desirable.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}For example...{linebreak}{linebreak}In 2016 we...{linebreak}{linebreak}- Built and deployed a central platform for managing monetization across our portfolio.{linebreak}- Broke up an old monolith into smaller Docker services running on Rancher and got a solid, always-deploying CI/CD pipeline.{linebreak}- Established a lightweight Agile process to aid developer efficiency from initiative to initiative.{linebreak}- Worked with in house teams to conduct research in the frame of Recommendation Systems with a working prototype.{linebreak}{linebreak}In 2017 we're...{linebreak}{linebreak}- Building applications to expand the business into areas of organic growth.{linebreak}- Refactoring and simplifying our micro-services ecosystem.{linebreak}- Doubling down in a robust product recommendation approach to better serve our users.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Human Environment{linebreak}{linebreak}- Centrally located in downtown Houston, free employee parking.{linebreak}- Coed work environment, casual dress code.{linebreak}- Cool office perks (e.g. sodas & coffee, happy hours, etc.).{linebreak}- Generous salary considerations & full benefits.{linebreak}- 6% 401k matching{linebreak}- 100% health / vision / dental for you & subsidies for the rest of your family{linebreak}- 15 vacation & sick days / yr.{linebreak}- Gym membership reimbursement up to $100/mo{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}What We Value{linebreak}{linebreak}We love to work as a team but office hours are flexible. Producing is more important than meeting a 9 to 5 schedule. We understand there are moments when you need to isolate yourself to concentrate so working from home is permitted and encouraged.{linebreak}{linebreak}We like to have a good time and minimize stress with good in-office coffee, ping pong, lounge/reading time and regular happy hours. We work hard and meet realistic deadlines. What good is delivering a poor product early?{linebreak}{linebreak}We also understand that family is important, so time-shifting (and sometimes day-shifting) is necessary to deliver for both the team & your family.{linebreak}{linebreak}
