Your impact
As a Customer Success Manager, you'll push the business forward by building relationships with prospective Help Scout customers. You aren't selling so much as you are becoming a trusted advisor, a partner that will work with people to find the best product fit.

About the Role
  • As a member of the Growth Team (traditionally Marketing and Sales), you’ll help people evaluate Help Scout for their business. This will likely be a mix of people in an active trial, or on our free plan.
  • You’ll work to better qualify the thousands of inbound leads we get each month, leveraging creative approaches to email marketing, marketing automation, and one-on-one conversations. Your goal will be to help self-directed customers find their own way and help larger or more complex customers find the right person to talk to.
  • Your job doesn’t really end when the deal closes. You may find yourself training new customers in their first 45 days, or working with long-term customers to make sure they have what they need.
  • We’re hiring you to own this part of the customer experience, to take in all the perspectives you can, and then build a plan. We have years of historical data and many hypotheses to experiment with.
  • You’ll experiment with, measure and document strategies that help us increase revenue cycle effectiveness and be a critical part of improving our revenue playbook.
  • We believe nurturing current and potential customers is a team sport, which is why this role is paid a full salary based on your experience and what you would make as an inside sales rep “on plan” in another company. We have no plans for commission plans or quota targets.

Who you'll work with
  • Tim Thyne, Head of Customer Development- Tim’s spent the past year building and adapting our approach to driving revenue and building relationships with customers, with an approach that fits our values and reputation in the market.
  • Suneet Bhatt, Chief Growth Officer - Suneet’s been here since July and has been a partner to Tim in building out Customer Development at Help Scout; Suneet also manages our Content Team, Marketing Analytics, and Product Marketing.
  • Nadia Basil, Head of Product Marketing - Nadia runs Product Marketing at Help Scout and will be a go to resource and partner to you as you find and create content that will be most relevant to our customers and potential customers.

About you
  • You have a history of digging into challenges and opportunities first-hand to understand what’s going on, and then get jazzed about codifying what you’ve learned so (elements of it) can be automated and scaled.
  • You’ve operated in and around the traditional handoff between Marketing and Sales (Demand Generation, Inside Sales) and are excited to bring those two disciplines even more tightly together.
  • You can easily lose track of time geeking out with Marketing Automation (HubSpot) and Sales Automation (Salesforce) tools. Mastering this stuff can be challenging but you love it.
  • This role is exciting because you love helping people win! It energizes you to work alongside people to help them grow their business.
  • You’re curious and have a history of learning new things quickly. Your curiosity is well-suited to this part of the customer experience because you are great at listening to customers and working with them to solve business challenges.
  • You maintain a healthy disrespect for the way things are traditionally done in Enterprise/SaaS sales. You look to do things differently in order to better align motivations between teammates and customers.

About us
  • Help Scout is a remote team with employees in eleven countries (eight people in the Boston office). We optimize for excellence over geography and overcome remote challenges through transparency, trust, chat and video conferencing.
  • We’re a customer-driven company and always will be. Everything follows the customer experience, no exceptions.
  • Our company is growing and has aspirations of helping millions of people around the world. Accomplishing our goals will present countless challenges and require you to excel in every aspect of the position. It’s hard work, but the people we’re looking for love exploring and solving hard problems.
  • This is not the typical startup “rocket ship.” We’ll never compromise customers or the experience in favor of growth. Our purpose is to build a profitable company that small businesses love and sustain it. We optimize your career at Help Scout for the long term as well, so keeping a healthy work/life balance is an important priority.
  • We value diversity at Help Scout and welcome all applicants regardless of actual or perceived race, color, ethnicity, sexual identity, gender identity, gender expression, economic status, ability, disability, religious beliefs or disbeliefs, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, marital status, parental status, or caregiver status.

Benefits
  • Competitive Salary - We pay at or above market salary in most cases and evaluate a lot of research to make sure everyone is paid well. The formula we use to calculate all salaries is public to employees and is improved upon regularly.
  • Work anywhere - Work from our office in Boston or anywhere else, provided you have 4 hours of overlap with the team. We’ll even buy your home office furniture or help you pay for a co-working space.
  • Health and dental insurance - We cover you and your family's health/dental insurance 100%. If you are based in the US, we'll cover you on our Harvard Pilgrim HMO or PPO policies.
  • Long-term/Short-term Disability Insurance & Life Insurance - we cover 100% of the premiums for LT/ST Disability insurance and base Life Insurance. You also have the option to purchase supplementary life insurance through our provider.
  • International Benefit Stipend - If you’re based outside the US, you’ll receive a monthly stipend that goes towards covering medical insurance, long and short-term disability, and accountant costs.
  • Flexible vacation - Take time off when you need it, we trust you.
  • Paid parental leave, including adoption - 12 weeks if you have or adopt a baby, 4 weeks if your partner has a baby.
  • 401k with 1% match- 1% Retirement Plan matching for both US and International Employees
  • Personal development stipend - Up to $1,800 per year to improve your craft
  • Great tools - Each employee receives a Mac laptop and 27'' display (or equivalent). We’ll also purchase any of the software or hardware you need as well as high-end furniture to get your home office started
  • Complete transparency - Everyone has full access to business metrics and financial information about the company.

Your impact

PHP is at the heart of Help Scout’s web app. It touches everything, and also powers our back-end administration app. Your work will empower over 7,000 businesses around the world to provide great customer service, and will support other senior engineers on your team.

Tools We Use

  • PHP

  • Backbone.js, Marionette.js, and React.js

  • Node.js

  • RabbitMQ

  • Java (APIs)

  • MySQL and MongoDB

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • The engineering team currently has twenty-five people, nine of whom work on the PHP and JS powering the Help Scout web app. On a typical day you may help a customer with an issue, work on a new feature, update a third party integration or create back-end tools to support our growth team. On any given project, you will be communicating with internal APIs, integrating with 3rd party services, optimizing processes using Redis and RabbitMQ, and wrapping it all up in support of a Backbone/Marionette (and sometimes React) front end.

  • Our engineering teams work in two-week iterations, communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with test cases and tag your team for review (often over a video and screen-sharing session). We are investing heavily in continuous integration and delivery so your development branch can be easily tested on environments that closely match production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.

  • Your team performs engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team and passes triage. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers and improve the product along the way.

  • Every 10 weeks, two PHP engineers from the team will work exclusively on either growth projects or support tool engineering. When you are on the growth rotation, you will work closely with the design team on internal tools or integrations, improvements to the onboarding process or other features aimed at customer growth. When you are on the support tool rotation you will work closely with the support team to improve their efficiency through tool building, automation and helping customers with our APIs.

As a dedicated Site Reliability Engineer you will help us define the best practices, tools and automation to ensure our fast growing SaaS provides best in class high availability while increasing engineering velocity. Your work will empower more than 7,000 businesses around the world to deliver a great customer support experience. This is a critical role that will influence every engineer in the company and directly impact our customer's satisfaction. No matter how elegant our product is, it means little if customers can't always access our site with great performance.

ABOUT THE ROLE
  • We are looking for an experienced Site Reliability Engineer to build sophisticated continuous delivery and test automation to keep our AWS-based services highly available and fast while increasing the engineering team's velocity.
  • Help Scout engineering is 24 full time engineers organized into 6 teams. You will be a member of a small team with one engineer focused on continuous delivery (CD) pipelines, and 3 engineers focused on our AWS infrastructure and operations. Working with your team, you will partner with our feature delivery teams to build any automation they need to improve site reliability and velocity.
  • You will be responsible for working on our three biggest site reliability priorities: four 9s high availability, continuous delivery and test automation. You will own the implementation and roadmap planning for improvements to our automation, tools and tests to support these priorities. The majority of your time will be spent building or implementing continuous delivery, test and self-healing automation and supporting tools. You will be a key internal champion for any and all changes to make our production environments more resilient, scalable, and performant.
  • Your potential projects will include expanding our CI pipeline across all teams, testing and implementing auto-scaling groups, expanding our test automation (smoke, stress, chaos monkey, etc), and enhancing the velocity of our CI pipeline (parallel tasks, containers, etc).
  • This is not a primary on-call position. However you should expect to be called upon if services you own such as CD pipelines or test automation fail and primary on-call team members can't resolve the issue.
  • Our 100% remote engineering team spends most of their time in Slack and Github. Engineers can focus for long stretches with typically only 2 scheduled meetings a week (one with your team and one with your manager). Engineers write their own automated unit and integration tests, and use our CI pipeline to release code to production several times a day. You can read more about our culture and how our remote team stays agile at https://www.helpscout.net/blog/agile-remote-teams/

REQUIREMENTS

About You
  • You love building test automation that finds site reliability problems before they hit production while allowing software engineering teams to continuously deliver new capabilities.
  • You have worked extensively with a wide range of Amazon Web Services (EC2, ELB, EBS, RDS, VPCs, CloudFormation, etc) and are familiar with the benefits and challenges of their offerings. You know how to design systems for failure and how to autoscale and recover systems on AWS to ensure high availability.
  • You are well-versed in modern system orchestration, configuration management, and application deployment tooling and practices.
  • You have designed continuous delivery and test automation for SaaS projects supporting tens of thousands of simultaneous active users, so you have a good sense of what the road ahead looks like and what we could be doing better.
  • You have a deep understanding of what it takes to run web services at scale and have a solid understanding of Linux systems internals and networking; from kernel to shell, system libraries, file systems and client-server protocols.
  • You love to dig into the details and automate manual processes whenever possible. You're comfortable with tools providing operational insights, log searching, and stats analysis.
  • A big part of being great at your job revolves around being very organized and communicative. It’s clear from your experience that you have those characteristics.
  • You’ve got a strong engineering background and have done a little of everything. It’s clear you are a curious person that prefers to get stuff done rather than delegate.

About You
  • You are very experienced with modern PHP development practices and open source frameworks. You’ve worked on these sorts of projects at scale and feel confident solving complex problems.
  • You have created Backbone (or a similar framework) single page applications before and can write JavaScript from scratch to implement a feature. Marionette and/or React experience is a bonus, but not required. We can help you pick it up.
  • Your code is not only reliable and performant for customers, but can be read, maintained and understood easily by other engineers on your team. You can also speak and write in terms that non-geeks understand. Clear communication is super important in a remote culture like ours.
  • You believe in writing unit and integration tests and have at least tried TDD. You like owning the quality of the code you write — QA doesn’t mean throwing it over the wall for someone else to test. You understand that some things are too costly to automate and must be manually tested to get it right.
  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea. You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work/management style to be remote-friendly.

DESCRIPTION

Help Scout is hiring a quality assistance engineer to help ensure our products provide an excellent customer experience. We build our products with engineer-led unit tests and functional tests, as well as extensive dogfooding and internal testing throughout the company.

As our first full-time QA engineer on our flagship Help Desk application, you are responsible for test plan development, execution and analysis across several major new initiatives. For this project you’ll be joining the Help Scout Web team of five engineers and working on an application used by over 6,000 (and growing!) companies around the world.

About the Role

  • The engineering team now has about twenty people, with five of them working full-time on our web application. You will be working hard with them to perform exploratory testing, build effective test plans, execute them efficiently, and deliver a great product to our customers.

  • A separate group of engineers works on several APIs consumed by both the web and mobile apps. Your test plans will need to cover the complete end-to-end application behavior exposed to the user.

About You

  • You love breaking things and running down what exactly failed. When you find a bug that’s hard to reproduce, you continue to test around the area to get to the root of a reproducible failure.

  • You are technical. You are comfortable using SSH, gathering logs, performing SQL queries, and automating the mundane.

  • You are an excellent writer and can effortlessly summarize an issue, steps to reproduce, and indicate all relevant details. You enjoy decomposing a large product into carefully considered test plans that maximize coverage vs time to test.

  • You are the go-to person for any applications you test and thrive gaining a deep understanding of the application. You seek out the major cow paths and important edge cases through research and close team collaboration.

  • You know the in’s and out’s of testing both iOS and web applications. You are familiar with tools that assist in bug capture, diagnosis, simulation and the limits of these tools.

  • You stay up-to-date on the latest QA techniques and can provide insightful advice about what does and doesn’t work to ensure quality over the long term.

  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea. You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work/management style to be remote-friendly.

Your Impact
As the Director of Content, you’ll be the glue that holds our content marketing strategy together. We currently have nearly 400k unique monthly visitors reading our blog and resources. You’ll play a critical role in taking our publishing to the next level.

We need your help wrangling an ambitious editorial calendar, collaborating with and amplifying the work of a creative team of writers, and executing a strategy that helps us create value for our current and future customers.

You’ll push the business forward as we strive to build the most talented content team in software — all with the goal of helping customers build a company people love.

About the role
  • The team consists of two content marketing managers (Gregory Ciotti and Emily Triplett Lentz), one customer evangelist, one part-time editor, and several teammates who are regular contributors. We are passionate about this stuff! You’ll build relationships with all members of the team and work with them daily to produce world-class content.
  • You’ll collaborate across the marketing department to develop a strategy for new content and growth opportunities. It’s your job to continually look for ways to experiment and increase our reach with great content.
  • As the business grows and new opportunities present themselves, you’ll be recruiting and hiring the best possible people for your team. We expect to add 1-2 full-time people to your team in the next year.
  • There’s a lot of coordination that goes into the editorial calendar and all of our content projects. You’ll be responsible for managing deliverables and logistics from start to finish. You’ll also be the editorial voice behind all of our content, making sure everything meets our sky-high standards of excellence.
  • You’ll work alongside our PR company to give our existing content greater reach. You’ll establish yourself as a thought leader and execute on initiatives that provide exposure for the brand and our values.

About You
  • You’ve worked on a high-performance content marketing team, and all of those folks have wonderful things to say about you.
  • You know what an MQL and an SQL are, and you are skilled at the tactics necessary to acquire them at a high volume every month.
  • Being detail-oriented isn’t just a sound bite for you; it’s one of your strongest qualities. This job requires superhuman organization and communication skills.
  • You have exceptional editing, copy-editing, and writing skills. Leveraging these skills to improve the creative work of those around you is something you genuinely enjoy.
  • You have a deep understanding of what it takes for a business to succeed and grow through a variety of content marketing channels, yet you continue to experiment and learn new things.

About Us
  • Help Scout is a remote team with employees in eight countries and eleven states (eight in the Boston office). We optimize for excellence over geography and overcome locational challenges through transparency, trust, and video conferencing.
  • We’re a customer-driven company and always will be. Everything follows the customer experience, no exceptions. Everyone at Help Scout is aligned in their motivation to create content that adds value to customers.
  • Our company is growing quickly and has aspirations of helping millions of people around the world. Accomplishing our goals will present countless challenges and requires you to excel at every level.
  • This is not your typical startup. Our mission is to build a profitable company that goes the distance. Our culture is not built around ping-pong tables or Xboxes, it’s all about the work. We value craftsmanship, having a sustainable work/life balance, and want your career at Help Scout to be a long and satisfying one.

Who You’ll Work With

Gregory Ciotti is a content marketing strategist who contributes to direction, planning, and distribution of our content. You’ll work with him to better understand successful outcomes for our customers. Read Greg’s piece on how to write with substance.

Emily Triplett Lentz is a content marketer with a strong background in journalism and customer support. She writes original pieces for the blog, champions our team contributions, and uses her storytelling talents to bring our company to life. Read Emily’s piece on softening the “no” in support.

Mat Patterson is our customer evangelist. You’ll be working closely with him to develop new resources and training materials to help our customers achieve success.

If you're based outside the US, we'll reimburse your out-of-pocket health and dental insurance costs.
  • Long-term/Short-term Disability Insurance & Life Insurance - we cover 100% of the premiums for LT/ST Disability insurance and base Life Insurance. You also have the option to purchase supplementary life insurance through our provider. (currently US only)

Your Impact

After recently launching the Help Scout iOS app to 5 star reviews, we have big plans for our first Android app. We’re looking to hire an experienced Android engineer to help us craft a wonderful experience there. You’ll be joining one other full-time engineer on the project and working on a product used by over 5,000 companies around the world.

About the Role

  • Our engineering team is currently about twenty people, with one focused on iOS and no one yet focused on Android. We’re starting at the ground floor with Android and have yet to make several platform-specific and technology decisions. You’ll be involved in every decision we make regarding implementation and testing.

  • You’ll be helping us select a framework for implementation. We currently are debating between Java or React Native and while you may have several years experience with Java on Android, you are curious enough about React Native to do some exploring and help us make an informed decision.

  • A separate team of engineers owns all the API endpoints, so your work is focused on the app implementation and design details. You’ll also be getting everything you need from the design team with regard to Android-specific visual design and interactions.

  • You’ll work with customers and QA testers to make the Android app launch a huge success for the business. Post-launch, you’ll work on adding new features, optimizing for other devices and improving the product.

Sales Coach

Your Impact
We’re building a Business Development team at Help Scout, whose primary responsibility is to be helpful at all stages of the customer lifecycle. As a Sales Coach, you’ll be focused on the pre-sales, trial and onboarding process with customers. We’re just getting this team off the ground, so you’ll have a big impact on what our playbook looks like in the future.

Working at Help Scout is a unique environment for sales because fit and values alignment come first. Closing the right deals is more important than closing a lot of deals. Your job is to listen well, identify challenges you can help with and become a trusted advisor. We believe nurturing current and potential customers is a team sport, which is why we have no plans for commission plans or quota targets.

About the Role
  • You’ll work alongside one other member of the team and focus most of your time on customers in a trial with Help Scout. Over the course of a few weeks (sometimes a few months), you’ll build relationships with key stakeholders via a series of emails, phone calls and/or demos.
  • We receive thousands of inbound leads each month, but up to now we haven’t done much to qualify or reach out to them. You’ll work alongside the marketing team to better qualify leads with automation and touch base with the ones that seem like a good fit for Help Scout.
  • Your job doesn’t really end when the deal closes. You’ll be working with new customers for up to 90 days to make sure they are off and running with everything they need.
  • Based on what works, you’ll experiment with, measure and document strategies that help us increase sales effectiveness. You’ll be a critical part of helping us figure out the sales playbook.
  • You’ll be working alongside members of the product team to pass along valuable feedback so that we can improve the product experience.
  • We’re not big on commissioned sales plans, so the role is paid a full salary based on your experience and what you would make an inside sales rep “on plan” in another company.

About You
  • You are in sales because you love helping people win. It energizes you to work alongside people to help improve their business.
  • You are naturally curious and have a history of learning new things quickly. Your curiosity is well-suited in sales because you are great at listening to customers and working with them to solve business challenges.
  • You’ve done inside sales before and understand what it takes to be very successful. Your years of experience enable you experiment with ideas and learn faster.
  • You maintain a healthy disrespect for the way things are traditionally done in Enterprise/SaaS sales. You question the process and look to do things differently in order to better align values between teammates and with customers.
  • with customers.

Who You'll Work With
  • Tim Thyne, Head of Customer Success - Tim joined us in November. He’s been working primarily with customers in the trial funnel and experimenting with outreach. You’ll report to Tim and work with him daily on new opportunities.
  • Nick Francis, CEO - Since this team is a new and important initiative at Help Scout, Nick will be working with the Business Development team to refine strategy and try new experiments.

If you're based outside the US, we'll reimburse your out-of-pocket health and dental insurance costs.

  • Personal Development stipend - Up to $1,800 per year to improve your craft
  • Great tools - Each employee needs a Mac laptop and 27'' display (or equivalent). We’ll also purchase any of the software or hardware you need.
  • Complete transparency - Everyone has full access to business metrics and financial information about the company.

Your Impact
The 19-person engineering team at Help Scout is full of people dedicated to a wonderful experience for our 5,000+ customers in more than 60 countries. We’re excited to add the third full-time javascript engineer to the team, who will work on our Docs product.

We work remotely and autonomously for the most part, which is why this position requires senior-level skill and experience. We're looking for folks who write tests and are rather stubborn about quality front to back.

Tools We Use
  • Backbone.js, Marionette, jQuery
  • PHP / Java (for backend & APIs)
  • Node.js
  • MySQL and MongoDB
  • Github

About the Role
  • You'll be part of a 3-person team that owns our Docs knowledge base product. The other two engineers work on the Java API and you’ll be responsible for the single-page app that makes up the admin interface. On a given day you’d be adding new features, writing tests and improving performance.
  • You’ll also work with two other full-time javascript engineers on the team to maintain and improve the standards and best practices we want to use across all Help Scout products. Our design team owns most of the html/css work and will help you make sure everything ends up being pixel perfect.
  • You may also end up doing some work on the Docs front-end that’s customer-facing (like docs.helpscout.net), which is just lightweight Scala templates and jQuery.
  • Aside from a weekly check in and bi-weekly planning meeting, you'll be able to work interruption-free. 90% of our communication happens in Slack. You can work anywhere in the world as long as you have 4+ hours of overlap time with your teammates.
  • Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact the experience in terms of performance, security and usability.
  • You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers. You'll deploy work that moves the needle for businesses around the world.

About You
  • You love building Backbone apps and have an excellent understanding of the best practices. Marionette experience is a bonus but not required. You won't have trouble picking it up.
  • Since the Help Scout web app depends on PHP passthroughs between the APIs and front-end, you’ll be writing some PHP. Experience with PHP and/or other object-oriented languages will be necessary for you to do excellent work.
  • You became an engineer because you like writing software that helps people.
  • You have a history of solving very challenging problems wherever you work. Others look to you as a source of knowledge and expertise.
  • Your code is not only a pleasure for customers to use, but for other engineers to read and understand easily.
  • You can speak and write in terms that non-geeks can understand clearly, whether it be in a conference call, blog post or support email.

Your Impact
As a design engineer at Help Scout, it’s your job to create not only a pixel-perfect experience for customers, but to do so by writing front-end code that’s clean, performant and consistent with the standards we’ve established as a team. Along with four other tight-knit designers on the team, you’ll be responsible for moving our brand and user experience forward.

About You
  • You never stop working on your craft and improving your skills. When looking at your work, it’s clear that you push yourself to get better with every project.
  • You are a designer by trade, with a talent for making websites and/or web apps. Your work typically starts in Sketch or Photoshop and you are very comfortable designing things with one or both of these tools.
  • You have an excellent understanding of modern CSS and javascript practices, both semantically and with regard to performance.
  • Animation with CSS, SVG or javascript is a tool you are using on nearly every project, when it improves the experience. Bonus points if you like to prototype with Principle.
  • You are an excellent communicator. You can juggle a few projects and stay organized, keeping your teammates in the loop the entire time.
  • As a self-motivated and driven person, you believe remote teams are the future. You have experience working in a remote culture or can adjust your work style to be remote friendly.

About the Role
  • To start out, you’ll split your time between the Product and Marketing teams. So you may find yourself prototyping a new feature one day and designing a new page for our marketing site the following day.
  • On most projects, you’ll do the work from concept to completion. You’ll be involved in user research, visual design, prototyping, front-end coding and testing phases of the projects you are responsible for.
  • You’ll also work on refactoring existing components in the web app. Some of them need slight design tweaks, other times you’ll be refactoring the CSS to be more clear and performant. We’re thinking about a switch to BEM-style CSS and you could end up leading that transition.
  • This role is best for someone that’s very experienced making things for the web and is looking for an opportunity to do extremely high quality work. We’ll make sure you have the time to do things the right way.
  • Everything we do is designed for remote working, so no matter where you are, 95% of our communication takes place in Slack or over a Google Hangout. You’ll have several hours per day to focus on your work, uninterrupted.
  • Your work will impact our customers in more than 70 countries and the hundreds of thousands of people that visit our website each month.

Who you’ll work with
Dave Martin, VP of Product - Dave was an early employee at Campaign Monitor and Automattic, enjoying a great deal of success in both places before joining Help Scout. Dave works from North Carolina and leads the product side of the business.

Jared McDaniel, Co-founder & Designer - As co-founder, Jared brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to product and marketing, but is mostly focused on the brand and marketing today. Any work on our website would likely be overseen by Jared, who works from our Boston office.

Sean Halpin, Product Designer - Sean is an extremely talented designer that works from Toronto and has a role that will be quite similar to yours. He contributes on both sides of the business and writes a lot of front-end code for various projects.

Stephen Murrill, Visual Designer - Stephen’s branding expertise and vision guides our brand, ensuring Help Scout is presented consistently and effectively across-the-board. He works from Pennsylvania and is responsible for most of the marketing assets we create for Help Scout.

Nick Francis, Co-founder & CEO - Nick has a UX background and is still very involved in the product design and development process from our Boston office. Typically he’s leading one big project effort at a time and will always lend a hand when it comes to user research, crafting engineering specs or testing your work.

YOUR IMPACT

The ideal marketer for this position is a data junkie at heart. You proactively offer a data-driven perspective on new ideas and key strategic initiatives that will drive authentic growth for the business. You’re detail-oriented with a bias toward action and impact. Your coding and technical chops bridge the gap between marketing, product, and engineering.

You’ll collaborate with an enthusiastic team that will support you with creative assets and the tools you need to make your work impactful.

ABOUT THE ROLE

  • You see growth marketing as a series of sprints. You’ll spend much of your time coming up with new ideas, prioritizing them efficiently, learning as much as you can, and then feeding your learning back into the process so you can make better, more informed decisions.
  • Through an ongoing cycle of traction experiments you’ll build predictable, scalable growth channels from the ground up. You’ll validate the effectiveness of each channel for our ideal audience, asses impact and life-cycle fatigue, and then either optimize or slash your experiments over time.
  • You’ll explore data around customer behavior, conversion rates, and funnel analysis to identify points of friction and devise new ideas on how we can grow the business — all while providing customers with a better experience.
  • You’ll bring order and organization to our campaign monitoring, management, and ongoing testing across all acquisition channels. You’ll also determine the set of tools and processes needed to scale analytics with business growth.
  • You’ll develop and lead some of our existing growth projects and latest experiments. These include learning from paid campaigns on social (for content promotion and product launches), building out clever, practical ways to effectively reach our most profitable verticals of SaaS and e-commerce, and forging a deeper understanding of what actions our most successful customers take before they sign-up.

ABOUT YOU

  • You are a curious, technical all-arounder who gets stuff done. You care deeply about the details but are able to step back and see the big picture, engineering holistic solutions from multiple and sometimes conflicting requirements.
  • You are passionate about testing, refining, and leveraging insights to accelerate growth. You push yourself to learn new tools, acquisition strategies and techniques, because let's be honest... you love this stuff!
  • You are a persuasive communicator, and complement your data analyses with qualitative insights.
  • You’re passionate about the customer experience, but you don’t let assumptions stop you from testing and trying something new every single day.
  • You have a track record of building truly innovative, rule-changing programs for driving growth.

ABOUT HELP SCOUT

  • Help Scout is a remote team with employees in six countries and eleven states (nine people work in our Boston office). We optimize for excellence over geography and overcome locational challenges through transparency, trust, and video conferencing (learn more).
  • This is not your typical fly-by-night startup. Our mission is to build a profitable company that goes the distance. Our culture is not built around ping-pong tables or Xboxes—it’s all about the work. We value craftsmanship, having a sustainable work/life balance, and want your career at Help Scout to be a long and satisfying one.

WHO YOU'LL WORK WITH

Ivana Flodr, VP Marketing - Ivana leads our marketing team to make sure content, growth, and product messaging create a seamless brand experience. Her wealth of experience and knack for pulling useful insights from mounds of data help to lead the business forward.

Eli Overbey, Growth Data Analyst - Eli spearheads our pursuit of meaningful growth. He owns the quantitative piece of our marketing pie, managing paid channels, SEO, and data analytics. You’ll work closely with him to maximize impact for every channel—figuring out what’s working, what isn’t, and where we can improve.

Stephen Murrill, Visual Designer - Stephen’s vision guides our brand, ensuring Help Scout is presented consistently and effectively across-the-board (he literally makes us all look good). You’ll work with him on everything from display ads to landing pages, maintaining the incredibly high standards we set for marketing deliverables.

Mo McKibbin, Product Marketer - Mo is the voice of our products at Help Scout. You’ll collaborate with her to ensure every avenue for growth uses clear, coherent messaging. Together, you’ll work to better understand our place in the market and establish a clear-cut plan to differentiate Help Scout from other available products.

DESCRIPTION

We have an ambitious roadmap, and as our first Product Marketer, you’ll take ownership of planning and executing our go-to-market strategy for new products and features.

You’ll help us evolve product messaging and customer communications across a variety of channels, connecting the right narratives with customer needs.

About the Role

  • You’ll be the voice of our products at Help Scout, which means you’ll write copy for the website, communicate with customers about new features and work creatively with other members of the team to successfully reach new customers.
  • Being great at your craft means that you’ll be doing a lot of research. It’s important that you can finish customers’ sentences, understand our place in the market, and establish a clear plan to differentiate Help Scout from other available products.

  • We’re always looking to better understand our customers. You’ll leverage customer interviews and quantitative data to spot opportunities for retention and expansion. You’ll use this data to better communicate with future customers in our marketing copy.
  • You’ll manage all outbound communication with existing customers. This could mean leading customer surveys, writing the monthly Release Notes or sending email/in-app messages to customers about a new feature. You’ll unify these messages with a single voice and make sure customers receive them at the right time.

About You

  • You are an exceptional writer, with the ability to grasp complex ideas and explain them in plain language. When writing briefs, blog posts, or product messaging, you work hard to stay clear and concise. Your style is friendly and engaging, and contains just the right amount of humor.
  • You are empathetic and thoughtful, always putting yourself in the customer’s shoes. You know that the most relevant messages start with understanding how people feel.
  • You enjoy being involved in several projects, and are talented at managing expectations and your own time. You love collaborating across teams and are personable, helpful, and incredibly organized.
  • You have the right blend of creative and analytical skills. Your technical expertise helps you develop a deep understanding of the product, and you use your creative expertise to transfer that knowledge via compelling marketing messages.
  • You are intensely curious and always on the lookout for ways to improve your talents and learn about new products. Your passion for web-based software is a fundamental part of what makes you great at this job.

  • Nick Francis, CEO - Nick has written almost all of the product copy to date. You’ll work with him to iterate and improve upon the “Help Scout voice,” and take ownership over copywriting. He’ll help you prioritize work based on the roadmap and upcoming releases.
  • Justin Seymour, Customer Support Lead - Justin leads the customers team and represents our customers’ voice with engineering and marketing. You’ll work with him to better understand our customers’ needs and coordinate ongoing communication plans.

DESCRIPTION
The engineering team at Help Scout is full of people dedicated to a wonderful experience for our 4,000+ customers in more than 60 countries. As a Continuous Integration Engineer, you bridge the gap between Ops and Engineering to implement tools that help us produce, deploy and troubleshoot our products more efficiently.

About the Role

  • You’ll be the first member of the team dedicated to DevOps full-time, but you’ll be supported by an Ops team of three and Engineering team of thirteen. One of your most important projects will be to implement rock solid continuous integration and delivery environments.
  • You’ll take ownership of the vagrant image(s) used by engineers and work on making sure it mirrors a production environment to the furthest extent possible.
  • On a daily basis you’ll be working with the Ops team, coordinating environmental changes and improvements and playing an active role in future planning.
  • Job number one is to proactively create tools that help the engineering team deliver faster and deploy high quality work. To that end, you’ll spend a lot of time building or implementing automation, diagnostic, troubleshooting and support tools.
  • As a member of the Ops team, you’ll also participate in the on-call schedule, supporting your teammates and our customers when things go wrong.
  • The company looks to you for guidance in making our local, development and production environments more performant, secure and reliable.

About You

  • You’ve worked on projects at a greater scale than Help Scout, so you have a good sense of what the road ahead looks like and what we should be doing better.
  • You like to get your hands dirty and automate manual processes whenever possible, and with the utmost simplicity. You’ve worked with operational insight and deploy tools, including ci, centralized logging, metrics graphing and push-button deployment.
  • A big part of being great at your job revolves around being organized (maybe a little OCD) and communicative. It’s clear from your experience that you have those characteristics.
  • You’ve got a strong engineering background and have done a little of everything. It’s pretty clear you are a curious person that prefers to get stuff done rather than delegate.
  • You’ve spent a lot of time provisioning, monitoring and troubleshooting cloud services … bonus points if it’s with AWS.

Who You’ll Work With

  • Denny Swindle, CTO and Co-founder - Denny leads the Ops team and works across all teams to make sure the product runs smoothly at all times. You’ll report directly to him.
  • Chris Brookins, VP Engineering - Chris leads the engineering team and works hard to make sure everyone is working on the right things. All the engineers report up to him and you’ll be working together quite a bit to prioritize work.

Summary

PHP runs a lot of what we do here at Help Scout. It drives most new features, integrations and all our back-end admin tools. We have ambitious plans for the future and are looking for customer-driven engineers to help us craft a wonderful product experience. You’ll be joining three other senior level engineers on our Platform team to create software used by over 4,000 (and growing!) companies around the world.

Tools We Use

  • PHP - the test-driven, object-oriented kind
  • Backbone.js, Marionette and jQuery
  • Node.js
  • RabbitMQ
  • Java (APIs)
  • MySQL and MongoDB
  • Git + Github
  • AWS

    About the Role

  • The engineering team currently has about fourteen people, three of whom will be your teammates on the Platform team. On a typical day you may help a customer with an issue, add a feature to our back-end admin tool or start work on a third party integration.
  • The Help Scout front-end is built with Backbone.js and Marionette, so you’ll be writing JavaScript as well. Building something new usually involves pulling in data from a Java API endpoint, creating a PHP passthrough and implementing the front-end components in JavaScript.
  • Your team works in two-week sprints and communicates mostly via Slack. When you finish a project and send a pull request, your teammates review the code and test cases (often over a screen-sharing session) before pushing to production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.
  • The Platform team is the first line of engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help us craft a customer experience that’s always getting better.

    About You

  • You are very experienced with modern PHP development practices and open source frameworks. You’ve worked on these sorts of projects at scale and feel confident solving complex problems.
  • You have created Backbone (or similar framework) apps before and can write JavaScript from scratch to implement a feature. Marionette experience is a bonus, but not required. We can help you pick it up.
  • Your code is not only reliable and performant for customers, but can be read, maintained and understood easily by other engineers on your team. You can also speak and write in terms that non-geeks understand. Clear communication is super important in a remote culture like ours.
  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea. You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work/management style to be remote-friendly.

    About Us

  • Help Scout is a remote team with employees in eleven states and six countries (seven in the Boston office). We optimize the team for excellence over geography and overcome remote challenges through transparency, trust, and video conferencing.
  • We’re a customer-driven company and always will be. Everything follows the customer experience, no exceptions. There is no sales team. Everyone at Help Scout is aligned in their motivation to create outstanding content and build a product that is a pleasure for businesses to use.

  • This is not the typical startup “rocketship”. We’ll never compromise customers or the experience in favor of growth. Our purpose is to build a profitable company that small businesses love and sustain it for the long term. There are no kegerators, playgrounds or Xboxes. Instead, we’d prefer employees to have a sustainable work/life balance and for their career at Help Scout to be a long one.

    Benefits

  • Work anywhere - work in our Boston office or anywhere in the world, as long as you have 4 hours overlap with your team
  • Health & dental - we cover you and your family's health/dental insurance 100% and reimburse up to half of your deductible
  • Flexible vacation - take time off when you need it, we trust you

We have big plans for mobile at Help Scout and are hiring another engineer to help the team craft a wonderful experience for customers. Our first project is focused on iOS and we’re leveraging the RubyMotion framework. You’ll be joining one other full-time engineer on the project and building something used by over 4,000 (and growing!) companies around the world.

About the Role

  • Our engineering team now has about fourteen people, but only one of them is working full-time on the mobile app. The two of you will be working hard to to finish all the requirements for version 1.0 and deliver a great product to customers.
  • A separate group of engineers is working on all the API endpoints, so your work is primarily focused on the front-end implementation and design details. You’ll also be getting everything you need from the design team with regard to visual design and interactions.
  • Our experience skews heavily toward web development. We’re looking for someone that’s been working on mobile full-time and can provide expertise/guidance with iOS/Objective-C specifically. You’ll be involved in every decision we make regarding implementation and testing.
  • You’ll work with customers and QA testers to make the mobile app launch a huge success for the business. Post-launch, you’ll work on adding new features, optimizing for other devices and improving the product.

    About You

  • You’ve been working with iOS and Objective-C so long that you know all the in’s and out’s of the platform. Since we’re leveraging RubyMotion to lower the knowledge gap, you’ll need either experience with Ruby or a willingness to pick it up, but Objective-C is still more important.
  • You have a great understanding of how “always online” products like Help Scout communicate with web services in an unpredictable mobile reality. You can help us design everything to fail gracefully and leverage local storage to provide customers with as seamless an experience as possible.
  • You delight not only in the way an application works, but in how it looks, and have an excellent understanding of mobile interaction design. Complex Core Animation is something you love working on because it can help you execute the perfect user experience.
  • You stay up-to-date on the iOS platform and can provide insightful advice about leveraging native platform APIs, all of which are available via the RubyMotion runtime.
  • You believe remote teams are the future of work, or are at least excited about the idea. You have experience working with remote teams or can adjust your work/management style to be remote-friendly.
