We are looking to hire someone who relishes designing and building systems and services that can manage large data sets (billions and beyond) with a high transaction volume that are scaling constantly to meet customer demand. The ideal person takes pride in building coherent and usable interfaces making it easy to use and operate on data. This role would allow you to take on on challenging problems, choose the right tools for the job and build elegant, scalable solutions. Your work as an experienced Java engineer will empower over 9,000 businesses around the world to provide great customer service, and will support the other senior engineers on your team. \n\nWe leverage Solr for several tools at Help Scout. Knowledge or even expertise in Solr is desired. However, as our data needs grow we look beyond search and towards Big Data solutions. We are seeking someone who can join the team and help us solve all kinds of data processing and analysis problems.\n\nCurrently at Help Scout\n* We develop in Java, Kotlin, JavaScript and PHP\n* We leverage AWS, RabbitMQ, Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Apache Solr\n* We also use Slack, Jira, Trello, Github, Jenkins\n\n# Responsibilities\n * You will be the fourth member of our search and data services team, collaborating on the next generation of our large-scale search and reporting service and associated infrastructure. On a daily basis, you'll work on adding new functionality, improving existing code, and API endpoints while maintaining focus on testing and documentation.\n* We currently index millions of search and report events every day and at peak hours our API handles tens of thousands of transactions a minute. You will play a key role in evolving our services to handle 10X that.\n* You will own some of our large, upcoming challenges and collaborate with your team on all of these: building a streaming data reports pipeline, reworking how we index data and retrieve data to scale while controlling infrastructure costs, and significantly improving our search relevancy and customer-facing reporting capabilities. \n* Our engineering team is over 40 people, more than half the company. As part of the search and data team you will be involved in the decisions made regarding implementation, testing, and backlog prioritization. You will collaborate with the rest of the engineering team through code, reviews. You will participate in making architectural discussion.\n* We work in using iterative software approach, communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with tests and tag your team for review - using video and screen-sharing as needed. Your development builds can be easily tested on environments that closely match production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.\n* Your team performs engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team and passes triage. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers and improve the product along the way.\n* Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact the experience in terms of performance, security and usability.\n* You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers. You'll deploy work that moves the needle for businesses around the world.\n* To ensure sufficient overlap with your teammates, we're looking for candidates that live in UTC+3 (Eastern Europe) and UTC-7 (as far as San Francisco) time zones. \n\n# Requirements\n* You became an engineer because you like writing software that helps people.\n* You bring a level of Java-specific expertise that will help us craft an outstanding experience for customers and fellow developers. \n* You have experience building information systems and data processing platforms. \n* You are skilled in the modern tooling that is used in data processing and retrieval domain. Big Data, Streaming Pipelines, Data Grids and Data Lakes are not just buzzwords to you.\n* You are excited about JVM ecosystem. We also like Kotlin here.\n* You are a skilled and passionate engineer who is friendly, collaborative, and supportive.\n* You value personal growth and constructive feedback. \n* You demonstrate an empathetic, organized and collaborative communication style with fellow engineers and non-engineering stakeholders. \n* You will consider how your work impacts others, and demonstrate thoughtful, flexible approaches to mentoring and guiding technical decisions.\n* Your code is not only a pleasure for customers to use, but for other engineers to read and understand easily. \n\n#Location\n- 🌏Worldwide

Your work will empower more than 7,000 businesses around the world to deliver a great customer support experience. Engineers write their own automated unit and integration tests, and use our CI pipeline to release code to production several times a day. \nYour Impact\n\nAfter recently launching the Help Scout iOS app to 5 star reviews, we have big plans for our first Android app. We’re looking to hire an experienced Android engineer to help us craft a wonderful experience there. You’ll be joining one other full-time engineer on the project and working on a product used by over 5,000 companies around the world.\n\nAbout the Role\n\n\n* Our engineering team is currently about twenty people, with one focused on iOS and no one yet focused on Android. We’re starting at the ground floor with Android and have yet to make several platform-specific and technology decisions. You’ll be involved in every decision we make regarding implementation and testing.\n\n* You’ll be helping us select a framework for implementation. We currently are debating between Java or React Native and while you may have several years experience with Java on Android, you are curious enough about React Native to do some exploring and help us make an informed decision.\n\n* A separate team of engineers owns all the API endpoints, so your work is focused on the app implementation and design details. You’ll also be getting everything you need from the design team with regard to Android-specific visual design and interactions.\n\n* You’ll work with customers and QA testers to make the Android app launch a huge success for the business. Post-launch, you’ll work on adding new features, optimizing for other devices and improving the product.\n\n\n

\nHelp Scout is hiring a quality assistance engineer to help ensure our products provide an excellent customer experience. We build our products with engineer-led unit tests and functional tests, as well as extensive dogfooding and internal testing throughout the company.\n\nAs our first full-time QA engineer, you are responsible for test plan development, execution and analysis across several major new initiatives, starting with our first mobile application. For this project you’ll be joining two other mobile engineers and a designer to create an iOS version of our flagship application used by over 4,000 (and growing!) companies around the world.\n\n\nAbout the Role\n\n\n* The engineering team now has about fifteen people, with two of them working full-time on the mobile application (iOS). You will be working hard with them to perform exploratory testing, build effective test plans, execute them efficiently, and deliver a great product to our customers.\n\n* A separate group of engineers is working on all the API endpoints consumed by the mobile app. Your test plans will need to cover the complete end-to-end application behavior exposed to the user.\n\n* The mobile app exposes most of the non-administrator functionality of our popular web application. You will need to become an expert in its behavior and nuances so you can scrutinize corresponding details in the mobile application.\n\n* After the mobile app launch, you’ll work to plan for the testing of additional strategic features and product areas across both our web and mobile applications.\n\n\n

\nSummary\n\nPHP runs a lot of what we do here at Help Scout. It drives most new features, integrations and all our back-end admin tools. We have ambitious plans for the future and are looking for customer-driven engineers to help us craft a wonderful product experience. You’ll be joining three other senior level engineers on our Platform team to create software used by over 4,000 (and growing!) companies around the world.\n\nTools We Use\n\n\n* PHP - the test-driven, object-oriented kind\n\n* Backbone.js, Marionette and jQuery\n\n* Node.js\n\n* RabbitMQ\n\n* Java (APIs)\n\n* MySQL and MongoDB\n\n* Git + Github\n\n* AWS\n\n\n\n\nAbout the Role\n\n\n* The engineering team currently has about fourteen people, three of whom will be your teammates on the Platform team. On a typical day you may help a customer with an issue, add a feature to our back-end admin tool or start work on a third party integration.\n\n* The Help Scout front-end is built with Backbone.js and Marionette, so you’ll be writing JavaScript as well. Building something new usually involves pulling in data from a Java API endpoint, creating a PHP passthrough and implementing the front-end components in JavaScript.\n\n* Your team works in two-week sprints and communicates mostly via Slack. When you finish a project and send a pull request, your teammates review the code and test cases (often over a screen-sharing session) before pushing to production.  You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.\n\n* The Platform team is the first line of engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help us craft a customer experience that’s always getting better.\n\n\n
