Description

Our mission is to build a world where no one’s health is hindered by their need. Over sixty percent of our health is determined by social needs like access to food, jobs, childcare, and housing. Right now, the way healthcare organizations address these problems is broken. We believe there is more to health than healthcare and we’re fundamentally rethinking how healthcare organizations and communities work together to help people thrive.

We came from a background of working with vulnerable populations in Baltimore and are focused on building next generation technology to move the needle on healthcare outcomes and cost for these populations. Our products are used by the top health plans and health systems in the country to make sure their patients are connected to the social service resources they need.

We’re backed by an incredible group of impact investors and VCs—from Kapor capital to Primary Venture Partners. Our team is made up of tenacious social workers, technologists, operators, and engineers, all united around our mission. We love people who are humble, dynamic, authentic, and results focused. Join us to solve some of the hardest problems in healthcare and build a better future.

The Role and You
Healthify is at an exciting stage in our company's life: we are growing rapidly, increasing revenue and funding, and helping more people than ever find and access the services they need. You will be critical in expanding our engineering team to take on valuable projects, including developing new features, improving our infrastructure, squashing bugs, and building internal tools to help other teams accomplish even more.

On a daily basis, you will ship code, pair with other engineers, code review pull requests, QA features, and contribute to a collaborative learning culture. You will communicate with other members of the engineering team regularly, as well as with stakeholders from other teams. On a weekly basis, you will participate in iteration planning meetings, retrospectives, and other team-wide activities such as occasional interviews for other engineering hires.

You will be successful in this role if you:
  • are motivated by an interest in software craftspersonship and improving your skills, as well as the desire to make a positive impact in the world
  • value object oriented design (for Ruby applications), best practices, and automated testing
  • enjoy working in team environments, collaborating with others, and teaching and learning from fellow team members
  • approach your work with empathy for your users and team mates
  • engage in productive conversations about code quality and design with patience, respect, and humility
  • are a self-starter who reaches out for assistance when blocked.

Requirements

The Necessities
  • 2+ years of professional experience developing MVC web applications in production
  • Some Ruby or Rails experience
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong team-work and interpersonal skills
  • Interest in improving the health and wellness of large and diverse patient populations
The Extras
  • Experience working in a less structured environment, for example from working at early-stage startups, contributing to open source projects, or organizing in the community
  • Experience in healthcare or social work
  • Experience with front-end tools and frameworks
  • Experience with search technologies (e.g. Elasticsearch or Solr)
  • DevOps experience

Benefits

  • Internal Impact - We’re a small team and you will help decide our culture and product.
  • External Impact - We're a mission-driven team united around building a world where no one's health is hindered by their need.
  • Self-Managed Vacation - We’re a results-oriented work environment, take time off when you need it.
  • Top Gear - We'll deck you out with a great laptop and monitor.
  • Education - We encourage (and pay for) a culture of continuous learning and education.
  • Covered Transportation Costs - We’ll cover your monthly unlimited subway pass for NYC-based employees. We provide remote employees with a coworking budget.
  • Free Caffeine and Snacks - We provide coffee, tea, snacks, and Friday team lunches at our Manhattan HQ.
  • Health Insurance - We cover medical, dental, vision insurance; we want you healthy.

DESCRIPTION

About Us

After experiencing the challenge of identifying and connecting people in need with the right social services firsthand, the founding team quickly saw an opportunity to create technology that would address these needs systematically. In 2013, Healthify was founded on a resounding belief that there's more to health than health care and today, it's a leading software provider to health plans, hospitals, and provider networks working in low-income communities. Their platform empowers care teams to make quick and accurate decisions, putting community referrals just a click away.

Healthify HQ is located in Manhattan’s iconic Financial District, but we’re far from the typical Wall Street stereotype. We serve a diverse, nationwide population and naturally value building a diverse team. We’re an inclusive space for all identities committed to keeping that foundation intact as we grow. We believe in high standards beginning at the interview process and continuing as a valued member of the team. We expect the best from each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt, and encourage each other to take initiative to improve ourselves and the company.

Many members of our team are full or part time remote. We embrace the flexibility and decentralization of a remote-first work environment.

The Role & You

Healthify is looking for an exceptional backend engineer to join our growing engineering team. You will work across all product lines building impactful services for patient populations with social service needs. Our backend engineers spend their time discussing, testing, developing and deploying features for our products. Some of the problems that we tackle include building intuitive experiences for traditionally low-tech user groups, designing systems to ensure that our social service database is always relevant, and integrating with our healthcare IT systems.

All members of our engineering organization take ownership over the initiatives and product lines they are responsible for. While this often means working with code, it also might involve educating other developers on new technologies, ensuring that a initiative is tracking well to a deadline, or talking to users about how they might interact with our products.

Our engineering team values efficient, maintainable, tested and pragmatic code, processes and tools. While our primary goal is to fundamentally change how the social needs of individuals are identified and addressed, we are also in the unique position of having significant exposure to the enterprise healthcare IT industry. With this exposure, we hope to continue to modernize the delivery of software products within a traditionally high-process and high-inertia industry.

  • Ability to thrive in a relatively unstructured environment - you are never afraid to ask questions when needed.

    The Extras

    Experience with:

  • Migrating to and/or operating within a service oriented architecture
  • Developing products within regulated industries (healthcare, fintech, etc)
  • Deploying sophisticated search services (Elasticsearch, full-text PostgreSQL, etc.)
  • Developing in JS and with JS frameworks (React, Angular, etc.)
