Joining the Gaia GPS Team\n\nCome build the best outdoor mapping software in the world. Your efforts will directly help a community of record-breaking backpackers, world-renowned guides, conservation scientists, wildland firefighters, hunters, offroaders, and more. Find Gaia GPS in the App Store, Google Play Store, and on gaiagps.com.\nAs a Customer Support Specialist, you'll correspond with Gaia GPS users, and help them in using Gaia GPS for their adventures and work. You'll create technical documentation and marketing materials. And you'll have a critical role in helping to improve the software, by understanding users and providing feedback into the product development process.\n\nYour Main Responsibilities:\n\n- Email Support/Technical Support\n- You'll assist users who want to learn about using the app, but you'll also dig deep into technical issues and bugs.\n- Answer user requests quickly and concisely\n- Communicate clearly and effectively with the engineering team about bugs and other issues\n- You'll need to answer about 20 emails per day, ranging in difficulty from quick and easy, to research intensive. At first, you'll stick with the easy questions but quickly transition to more difficult ones.\n- Write and maintain documentation\n- This includes our user-facing Help Center as well as an internal Help Center for the support staff\n- Other responsibilities may include writing and video work for marketing, managing ad campaigns, GIS work to help produce maps, or even writing code.\n\nQualifications:\n\n- concise and powerful writer\n- Ability to understand and solve obscure problems (poorly phrased questions, novice users)\n- Works hard without constant supervision (remote experience a plus)\n- Good with computers (learn new programs easily, coding/html/css knowledge a plus)\n- You don't need to be able to write your own programs, but basic knowledge of programming concepts will help you better understand technical issues, which is a large part of this job.\n\nTraits/Activities We've Seen Correlate with Success:\n- you're an expert at something, and you've developed hard skills (examples: musical instrument, a -Master's degree, programming, bodybuilding, video production)\n- you have a lot of persistence (example: thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail)\n- you excelled at a rigorous program (example: salesperson who hit metrics, REI associate top performer)\n- you are self-taught in some areas\n- vested interest in the outdoors and/or maps\n- interest in or experience with programming\n- previous experience working remotely\n- good memory/recall\n\nIt's important to recognize that in a small company, you'll often be on your own. You won't always be told what problems to solve or what to work on. You should be a great self-starter and have an entrepreneurial spirit.\n\nPlease note the company is 100% remote - you should think about whether this will be a good setup for you. The advantages include huge flexibility in working hours, a quiet office, and the ability to work from home or wherever you like. The disadvantage is lack of physical society... we only get together a couple times a year, and this means finding physical society in local community and family. We collaborate via group chat, video calls, Slack, Quip, Github, Zoom, Dropbox, and Trello.\n\nCompensation and Benefits\n\nFlexible Schedule:\nThe team spans all US time zones, and you can set your own hours. People on the team often shuffle around hours so they can go hiking, skiing, or hunting at the best times. Your hours will be more constrained to start, during training.\n\nThe Comm team communicates frequently and it is important to overlap a few hours every day during regular business hours. Some weekend work necessary (usually about 1 weekend per month).\n\nCompensation:\n\nThis is a full-time salaried position starting at $30,000/year - depends on experience and location\n- 401K match - 100% up to 5% of salary\n- the potential for stock options later\n- comped cellular and home internet\n- Paid Time Off:\n- 4 weeks of vacation\n- 10-12 holidays, which you can shuffle around\n- 5 sick days\n- maternity/paternity - 2 months/6 weeks\n\nOther Benefits:\n\n- great computers/desks/chairs and other equipment provided\n- company-only and family-included retreats (previous trips include backcountry skiing to Peter Grubb Hut, hiking in Zion National Park, hiking in Rocky Mountain National Park, Tahoe skiing/hiking)\n- opportunities to go to conferences\n\nHow the Job Starts:\n\nStarting out will include getting to know the Gaia GPS app, learning how to use the customer support platform, and learning to answer customer questions via email.\nAs you grow into your role, you will continue to take on more challenging technical issues. If time allows in the shoulder seasons, you'll have time to work on other things and develop new professional skills.\n\nMore about Us:\nEvery member of the small, profitable, boot-strapped Gaia GPS team shares a love of the outdoors, and works remotely from places all over North America (CA, MT, OK, WI, Canada). Read more about the team here: https://www.gaiagps.com/company/\n\nMultiple team members thru-hiked the longest trails in the US (PCT and AT), and the technical team is highly competent, founded by an ex-Googler. Fifty percent of the team is female, including the technical founder.

\nHelp build the future of outdoor mapping at Gaia GPS. We're looking for an outdoorsy and experienced developer. You will be the 4th dev and 7th employee, at a bootstrapped software company. We enjoy a pace that requires few deadlines, where we steadily build new and better software.\n\nWe favor excellence over technical profile, and we want to meet developers from any background - full-stack, UX, back-end, systems, or even math and algorithms.\n\nWhat You'll Do\n\nDepending on your skills, you could find yourself doing many things:\n\n\n* You could build an outdoor search API, adding to and improving on our algorithms, building on OpenStreetMap and properietary data.\n\n* You could have a key insight about the signup funnel for the app, and improve revenue with just a code tweak.\n\n* You could scale up a server as we hit the bottlenecks from growth and seasonal swings.\n\n* You could approach Gaia GPS from a UX perspective, and have rippling effects across our consumer and B2B users.\n\n\n\n\nHow We Work\n\nEveryone contributes to design and product strategy. You'll both get to work in a tight team with other good developers, and solo author stuff you think up. We code review 100%, and we like to get code right.\n\nWe code a lot, Slack a lot, and have a few, crisp meetings each week by Google Hangout. We work as a distributed team around the US (CA, MT, CO, PA, TX, OR, WI).\n\nLifestyle and Benefits\n\nWe have the most flexible work environment, which lets all of us balance family and other interests, with work.\n\nWe offer 4 weeks of vacation, and another 12 paid holidays that can be shuffled around. We provide 2 months of paid maternity, 1 month of paid paternity, and additional unpaid leave.\n\nWe provide the best computers, monitors, tablets, and other home office equipment. We reimburse home internet and mobile phone bills. We also have an annual 4-day retreat, such as to Tahoe, to hang-out and mingle the remote team. We like to comp expenses for any sort of books or other materials for learning.

\nWe are looking for a developer to work on this project, on a contract basis: https://github.com/trailbehind/OpenHuntingData\n\nYou will write a set of python scripts and JSON metadata files, which aggregate geodata for hunting, wildlife, and public/private lands. You can look at the Github issues to see the series of steps to work on the project. You'll work with @jessecrocker, @andrewljohnson, and @wibge on Github, for code review and collaboration.\n\nIf you have expertise in open maps and data, consider commenting on an open issue if you have questions about the project. We'll give priority to candidates who have previously worked with geographic code/data on Github. \n\nWhen hiring a contractor, we ask you for your hourly, daily, or weekly rate, and we don't negotiate with you. We choose the candidate who can obviously complete the project, and that we think offers a good value based on their cost.\n\nWe expect this project to take 1-3 months, and it could lead to steady, similar work.\n\nFYI, we will also start hiring for a full-time developer position in January, more focused on mobile development, and UI/UX (iOS, Android, and web). Overall, we run a CoreOS+Docker+Postgres cluster on AWS, and write native apps and angular.js (and now some react.js).
