\nSenior Backend Engineer\n\nAt Density, we build one of the most advanced people sensing systems in the world. The product and infrastructure is nuanced and one-of-a-kind. Building this product for scale has been an exercise in patience, creativity, remarkable engineering, laser physics, global logistics, and grit. The team is thoughtful, driven, and world-class. \n\nImportance of Engineering \n\nWe build systems that are real-time, accurate, and anonymous by design. Our systems help today’s largest companies understand how their buildings get used. We have counted hundreds of millions of people. \n\nCounting people in “real-time” is unique and particularly hard to achieve. It allows a user to walk into a room, beneath our sensor, and see the room’s occupancy increment 700ms later.  \n\nToday alone, Density will ingest over 1m events. In the coming year, our sensor network is on track to grow ten-fold. The overall system load is exploding. Maintaining our low latency standards requires an increasingly thoughtful system. \n\nWe’re architecting infrastructure where annual, unscheduled downtime is measured in minutes. We’re building intelligent redundancies so missed events are an oddity. We’re constructing an exceptional engineering team to support always-on, intelligible analytics generated on the fly.  \n\nReal-time can solve one of the world’s most fundamental problems -- how do humans use all this space? Last week we launched Safe by Density to help organizations safely return to the workplace. This product, a singular example, would not have been possible without real time data.  \n\nThis is a large, nuanced, deeply technical problem. We need your help solving it.  \n\nYou can read our values here. \n\nPlease apply if you have some of the following background:\n\n\n* You have 5+ years experience shaping highly scalable enterprise systems. Or can demonstrate similar proficiency. \n\n* You have a command of technologies like Time Scale DB, Redis, Kafka, Postgres, AWS, Django, and Python.\n\n* You have architected complex data pipelines, APIs, and data delivery mechanisms.\n\n* You have had significant senior responsibility for monitoring, profiling and improving system performance. \n\n* You have demonstrated the ability to navigate the nuanced needs of internal tools and customer facing systems.\n\n* You can balance a demanding workload, discern priorities, and communicate tradeoffs effectively.\n\n* You are resourceful, direct, helpful, driven, and mission-oriented.\n\n* You have an understanding of statistical analysis and trend data modeling.\n\n* You have worked with container orchestration technologies like kubernetes or nomad.\n\n* You embrace the opportunity to share your knowledge. \n\n* You have a working knowledge of front end technologies like ES6, React, and Redux. \n\n* You have an excitement for and ability to interact directly with customers. \n\n* You have an awareness of your weak spots and a genuine desire to improve. \n\n* You’re looking for a long-term role with a company that has long-term ambition.\n\n\n

To our future Senior Embedded Engineer\n\nAt Density, we build one of the most advanced people sensing systems in the world. The product and infrastructure is nuanced and one-of-a-kind. Building this product for scale has been an exercise in patience, creativity, remarkable engineering, laser physics, global logistics, and grit. The team is thoughtful, driven, and world-class.\n\nWhy this is an important role\n\nLast week our deployed DPUs detected a million humans walking through doors. A number that increases every week.\n\nAs engineers, we think it's pretty cool to be capturing events at this volume. Especially when it's done anonymously, accurately, and in real-time. Although counting people is a DPU's top priority, it needs to do so much more.\n\nOur system must efficiently and reliably:\n- Receive and process improvements through command and control functionality\n- Seamlessly interact with our network of partner products (think building automation and security integrations)\n- Push diagnostic data so we can remotely monitor and troubleshoot.\n\nOur DPU has a growing set of responsibilities. We need an experienced hand to help us imagine, build, and maintain these mission critical systems and functionalities. Are you up for the job?\n\nThis position reports to Density’s Director of Software.\n\nRead our values here.\n\n\n\nRequirements:\n\n\n* Deep understanding of modern C++\n\n* Exceptional comfort with networking, specifically in enterprise environments (this is big for us)\n\n* Strong experience with the Linux system level APIs, placing an emphasis on designing AsyncIO/event loop based embedded user space daemons.\n\n* Experience integrating with custom hardware via standard Linux interfaces.\n\n* Strong understanding of TLS based communication (ideally using OpenSSL).\n\n* Experience interfacing with large scale cloud based backends.\n\n* Experience with an embedded Linux build system (Yocto, Buildroot, Linux from Scratch)\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBonus Points for:\n\n\n* Computer Vision\n\n* Machine learning and machine learning hardware\n\n* Experience with building automation. Specifically Bacnet protocol.\n\n* Python 3 AsyncIO\n\n* AWS lambda\n\n* Nomad/Terraform\n\n* ZMQ\n\n* Kafka\n\n* BLE\n\n* 802.11 \n\n* CDP or LLDP\n\n\n

\nTo our future Data Engineer\n\nAt Density, we build one of the most advanced people sensing systems in the world. Our customers, however, are interested in what happens after these events enter our system.\n\nDensity is deployed globally, servicing a variety of use cases, by some of the largest companies in the world. Here are just a few examples. A leading cloud storage company is using Density to strengthen their physical security by detecting unauthorized access. A marquee hotel brand is using Density to measure lounge occupancy and dynamically deliver world-class service. An international telecom is using Density to better design and optimize their real estate portfolio.\n\nThese use cases may seem disparate, but a common thread holds them together. They all share the need for real-time and ongoing data analysis. And that's where you come in.\n\nOur systems must efficiently and reliably:\n\n- Update current counts and analytics whenever a relevant event occurs, for every impacted space, \n- Publish the information to low-latency receivers via webhooks and websockets, \n- Alert and notify as appropriate through SMS, email, and push notifications, and \n- Aggregate events into analytics used for dashboards, forecasts, and fleet management.\n\nTurning millions of events into actionable insight is a nuanced dance. Are you up for the job?\n\nWhat you'll work on\n\n\n* Scale event ingestion pipelines requiring high availability and real-time data processing/delivery.\n\n* Store, optimize, and deliver analytical data via a RESTful API.\n\n* Backend development on internal and customer facing projects, utilizing Python, Django, and NodeJS.\n\n* Refine APIs and data delivery mechanisms for applications such as web dashboards, alerting & health systems, mobile applications, and third party integrations\n\n* Work closely with DevOps to monitor inefficiencies and improve infrastructure\n\n* React to customer needs and feedback through tight-looped, iterative development\n\n* Contribute to open source initiatives\n\n* Document and teach best practices across our stack\n\n\n\n\nWhat we're looking for\n\n\n* 5+ years industry experience building and scaling web applications and APIs\n\n* Deep experience with stream processing systems (i.e. Kafka)\n\n* Experience writing ETL pipelines on a cloud infrastructure (AWS)\n\n* Deep experience with Python, Django / DRF, and Postgres\n\n* Experience building data-centric applications, including analytics pipelines, report generation systems, and alerting & health systems\n\n* An understanding and appreciation for application performance monitoring and profiling tools\n\n* A desire to define, document, and teach web engineering standards\n\n* Strong writing skills, especially with crafting clear and concise documentation\n\n* A motivation for constant learning\n\n\n\n\nIcing on the cake\n\n\n* Experience with statistical analysis and trend data modeling\n\n* A deep appreciation for design\n\n* A strange obsession with counting people (or what you can do with the resultant data)\n\n\n\n\nWhile we have offices in Syracuse (NY), San Francisco, and NYC, we embrace and have built a culture around remote work.

\nPeople count through a door might sound simple. Solved, even. In reality, there are significant and unexpected challenges. Our sensor’s analysis must account for millions of environmental variates; handle odd and unpredictable human behavior; and, to be ubiquitous, must amass its data anonymously. The problem of people count is unsolved and complex; but we’re convinced it’s fundamental, fascinating, and global. At the core of our method is an image processing algorithm. It understands the direction of objects as they collide and move through a threshold, it’s capable of discerning a door swing from a plant, and it knows when a line has formed. We’re looking for an experienced computer vision engineer to help us turn large amounts of data into real-time, always-on people count. Ideally, you have a deep interest in computer vision, especially in segmentation and tracking, and experience architecting vision-based products. If you get excited about predictive movement analysis, background segmentation, and optimizing code to run on an embedded device, we’d love to talk.
