Before reading on, learn what life is like at Customer.io.

What you can expect to work on in this role

Our back end engineering team is responsible for building and maintaining the systems that power Customer.io’s behavioral marketing platform. This team has to efficiently handle 30TB of customer data and more than 3 billion customer events received per month across 800 different paid customers. We’re looking for engineers to help us answer some of our most difficult scaling and optimization questions.

Questions Like:

  • How do we architect and implement fault tolerant systems that can scale to handle the needs of more, larger and more varied customers?
  • How do we monitor critical parts of our infrastructure so we’re the first to see when something is going wrong or failing?
  • How do we operate deploying our services on a growing number of servers, and optimize our usage of our existing servers?
  • How do we use the data we have to unlock new value for our customers?

    You’ll be effective if you

  • Have deep expertise in at least one programming language, such as Java, C#, C++, Ruby, or Python and a willingness to work in Go.
  • Have a strong command of fundamental algorithms and data structures
  • Have a passion for software engineering, and for creating what doesn’t exist
  • Know how to make the tradeoffs required to ship without compromising quality
  • Know that investing in developing solid tests pays for itself several times over
  • Have a desire or experience to work on a remote / distributed team.

    Tools in your belt

BoltDB, Raft, Go, Ruby, Fairway (our custom message queue) and MySQL. Our stack has and will continue to evolve as we seek out the next order of magnitude performance improvement.

The service runs on a mix of Amazon EC2, Google Cloud and bare-metal servers.

You’ll work with one American and three Canadians (our current Backend Team) to help maintain and develop our systems & services. There are lots of interesting and challenging projects for you to work on independently and with the team, from devops to the development of fault tolerant and replicated systems.

With the opportunity to work alongside the rest of the Customer.io team, you’ll have say in what we do, and will collaborate across different teams. For example, one of our Backend “gurus” helps the support team with customer questions on a weekly rotating schedule.

Why should you work with Customer.io?

Work anywhere in the world you want. We'll buy you what you need to deck out your home office or give you a monthly budget for some co-working space. We want you to work where you'll be most productive.

Competitive salary - We’re offering $100,000 - $120,000 for this position in the company

Equity - You'll own a piece of the company. It's not a get-rich-quick deal, but if you stay around for a while, we're planning to be a long-lasting company and your piece of it may be a nice bonus.

Big Impact - Our team is small, but growing quickly. The work you do will materially impact how successful we are as a company.

Great Tools - Everyone in the company has a budget for a computer, a motorized standing desk, Steelcase Leap office chair, external monitor, and anything else you'd like to get your job done.

Health Benefits - We pay 100% of your premiums for medical, dental and vision.

Retreats - We get our whole company together once a year. We've had retreats in Barcelona, Romania, and Hunter Mountain, NY.

Vacation - 4 weeks of suggested vacation time, and we require you take at least 2 weeks (we switch off your account!). Plus any extra days you need, when you need them.

To apply, make sure you tell us why you’re interested in the position. Don’t forget to include a github profile if you have one and share a story from your professional experience that’s most relevant to this role.

What you can expect to work on in this role

Customer.io is a product used by over 800 companies to communicate with over 100 million people. As the Head of Product, you’ll help us imagine a better world for our customers, break changes into small achievable goals and then figure out the details to make each step possible for our team.

You’ll ask and help answer questions every day:

Questions Like:

  • How should businesses communicate to foster strong relationships with users?
  • What should we build this year to help our customers achieve their goals and our business achieve our goals?
  • What could we build tomorrow to add the most value for our customers?
  • What’s the biggest pain point customers have in the product today (and how do we fix it)?
  • How do we add more functionality while helping new users become successful?
  • Does everyone who is working on this feature understand what success is?

You’ll be effective if you

  • Are empathetic - it is hard to solve user pain if you can’t feel it with them.
  • Care about user experience (UX) and can’t help but obsess over the details that make all the difference.
  • Are comfortable sharing ideas and proposals in front of a room full of people (both remote and in person).
  • Can get your point and the product plan across to a distributed team.
  • Can rally a group of people around a goal.
  • Think logically and get excited by solving complex problems.
  • Have strong opinions, weakly held

You’ll work day-to-day as a member of multiple feature teams. On those teams, you’ll create and share a compelling narrative about features: what problem they solve, for whom, how and why solving this problem matters in the first place. You’ll then craft the solution to the problem, shepherd the team towards solving it and decide when it is ready to release to our customers.

What you’re in for

A Head of Product at Customer.io would pick the best way to express an idea and help other people understand that idea clearly. You’d create things like:

  • A high level overview of a problem that we’re trying to solve and what the challenges are. (Hackpad, Google Doc)
  • Diagrams showing concepts and ideas (Omnigraffle, Sketch)
  • Sketches showing rough UI and workflows (Pencil and paper)
  • Wireframes showing options for consideration (Balsamiq, Omnigraffle, Sketch)
  • Feedback on work in progress (Hackpad, Our internal Discourse forum, Video Chat)
  • Public Release Notes (Markdown)

Why should you work with Customer.io?

Work at our head office on Portland, OR or anywhere in the world you want. If you’re remote, we'll buy you what you need to deck out your home office or give you a monthly budget for some co-working space. We want you to work where you'll be most productive.

Competitive salary - We’re offering $90,000 - $110,000 for this position in the company depending on experience.

Equity - You'll own a piece of the company. It's not a get-rich-quick deal, but if you stay around for a while, we're planning to a long-lasting company and your piece of it may be a nice bonus.

Vacation - Rest and recuperation is important. We offer unlimited paid time off with a 2 week minimum per year.

Customer.io is looking for a technically savvy person to help prospective customers get up and running in the product. You'll be joining our team of 13. We're a geo-distributed company working across 6 different time zones.

You can be wherever you want to be.

About Customer.io

Customer.io is a messaging platform that helps companies communicate better with their users. Developers do a simple integration that allows marketers to send email messages based on what people do or don't do in a web or mobile app. Our customers include DigitalOcean, Shutterstock, Olark and over 580 others.

The Role

You'll be working with Colin, the CEO and Diana, the Director of Customer Success to improve the process we use to help new sign ups become paying customers. You can think of this role as an expert advisor or concierge to help people become initially successful in the product. Your goal is to help people find the shortest path to success that turns them into a long-term customer.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Having initial conversations to understand if we are going to be a good fit for each other.
  • Being the point of contact for prospective customers as they are trying out our service making sure they get all their questions answered.
  • Gathering information about a prospective customer's product, making a recommendation on how to integrate, and offering tips and information on what messages to send.
  • Performing instructional demos of the software to show people how to accomplish their specific tasks.
  • Speaking intelligently about technical things like or APIs & their documentation, JSON, HTML, Javascript. You don't need to be an expert, but you need to be comfortable reading code and talking to engineers.

On a given day, you might end up teaching marketers about running A/B tests and creating rules for sending emails. You might also end up advising developers on how best to structure the data they are sending in to Customer.io.

    About You

  • You've been working in the tech industry and around tech for 3+ years.
  • You can think logically and analytically. Customer.io is all about rules and you need to be able to understand and define them!
  • You're empathetic and can relate to other people and their challenges.
  • If you see something that is broken, you'll fix it rather than assuming someone else will.
  • You can communicate complex ideas simply.
  • You get joy from helping other people be successful.
  • You're well organized and don't get overwhelmed when you are juggling a lot of things to do.

    Benefits

Work anywhere in the world you want. We'll buy you what you need to deck out your home office or give you a monthly budget for some co-working space. We want you to work where you'll be most productive.

  • Competitive salary. We’re offering $70,000 - $110,000 for this position depending on your experience.
  • Equity. You'll own a piece of the company. It's not a get-rich-quick deal, but if you stay around for a while, we're planning to a long-lasting company and your piece of it will be a nice bonus.
  • Minimum of 2 weeks vacation per year. Take time off when you want / need it. We want you to be able to recharge your batteries so you're happy and productive at work.
  • Company retreats 1 - 2 times per year. We've rented a cabin on a lake in Hunter Mountain, NY and spent a week in a giant house in Barcelona.
  • Computer of your choice. We tend to use Apple Macbooks but we'll buy you whatever you're going to be most productive on.
  • Cell phone & home internet covered. It's just a little extra, but we'll cover your cell phone and home internet. No, you won't be expected to be accessible 24 hrs a day!
  • Health coverage. We'll make sure you have health, dental and vision coverage in your country / state.
  • Anything else we missed? If there are other benefits that would be important to you, let us know. we'd be happy to consider adding them.
