Automattic builds related content, recommendations, and search for websites, e-commerce sites, blogs, and the WordPress.com Reader. We connect millions of publishers with billions of readers every month and look for ways to help new publishers build an audience. We have only just started to scratch the surface of providing engaging, relevant search results for the Open Web.

Our system runs on open source: Elasticsearch, MySQL, Spark, Kafka, HDFS (and WordPress of course).

Sound fun? It is.

Here are some skills that will come in handy:

  • Experience with Open Source search systems: Elasticsearch, Solr, Lucene.
  • Great programming skills in both dynamic and compiled languages (especially PHP and Java/Scala).
  • Knowledge of scaling search systems: high volume indexing and querying.
  • Understanding how to combine and build signals from many sources to create and evaluate novel search algorithms.
  • A strong understanding of distributed computing and system performance.
  • Ability to take a project from idea to implementation, putting the minimal system needed into production, but with an eye on where we need to be in 5 years.
  • Great troubleshooting skills.

Through our WordPress.com VIP program, we provide support, hosting, training, and other services to some of the biggest and best WordPress sites on the web.

Your style is to get things done with minimum friction, and to respond rapidly when called on, as well as being super proactive. You view companies as partners, and not just customers, and pride yourself in establishing long-term relationships. You enjoy doing demos and meeting with everyone, from engineers to GMs and VPs of Sales.

In addition, you are:

An amazing communicator; you should be great at holding people’s attention whether presenting, chatting on the phone, or writing a quick blog post.

Comfortable working in a sales role, negotiating terms, and reviewing contracts.

Quick to resolve unexpected challenges, and collaborate with developers.

An expert at distilling goals and wish-lists into concrete next steps.

The position entails managing a customer from pre-sales conversations and contract negotiations, through signup, launch, and beyond.  You’ll be the point person for educating them on new features and opportunities, as well as being an escalation point for anything urgent.

This role requires you to have a deep understanding of the technology and platforms that we run, and being able to communicate with engineers effectively.  Moderate travel is required as well.

How to Apply

You love working with some of the most influential companies on the planet, and helping them get the most out of WordPress and our VIP program.

Your style is to get things done while reducing friction for your colleagues and clients, to respond rapidly when called upon, as well as being proactive. You view companies as partners, and not just customers, and pride yourself in establishing long-term relationships. You enjoy managing projects and timelines, and working with everyone from engineers to GMs and VPs of Sales.

In addition, you are:

Comfortable with a high volume of communication and switching tasks at a moment’s notice

Quick to resolve issues that pop-up, and collaborate with developers

An expert at distilling goals and wish-lists into concrete next steps

Skilled in conflict management and resolution

Undaunted by managing risks in high stakes situations

Excited by kick-off calls and getting everyone on the same page

The position entails managing partners post-sales through launch, and beyond. You’ll be the point person for their projects, as well as being an escalation point. This role requires you to have a deep understanding of the technology and platforms that we run, and be able to communicate with both engineers and business people effectively. Software development and architecture experience will help you succeed, however coding is not in scope for this position. Some moderate travel is required – expect quarterly as a baseline.
