Automattic builds related content, recommendations, and search for websites, e-commerce sites, blogs, and the WordPress.com Reader. We connect millions of publishers with billions of readers every month and look for ways to help new publishers build an audience. We have only just started to scratch the surface of providing engaging, relevant search results for the Open Web.

Our system runs on open source: Elasticsearch, MySQL, Spark, Kafka, HDFS (and WordPress of course).

Sound fun? It is.

Here are some skills that will come in handy:

  • Experience with Open Source search systems: Elasticsearch, Solr, Lucene.
  • Great programming skills in both dynamic and compiled languages (especially PHP and Java/Scala).
  • Knowledge of scaling search systems: high volume indexing and querying.
  • Understanding how to combine and build signals from many sources to create and evaluate novel search algorithms.
  • A strong understanding of distributed computing and system performance.
  • Ability to take a project from idea to implementation, putting the minimal system needed into production, but with an eye on where we need to be in 5 years.
  • Great troubleshooting skills.

We’re looking for an exceptional attorney to help build our legal team. You will work alongside Automattic’s General Counsel to navigate the wide range of legal issues involved in building Automattic’s global business, while contributing to the WordPress community and making the internet a better place.

You:

Have a JD from a US accredited law school, 5+ years of experience in legal practice, and currently registered and in good standing with at least one state bar. In-house experience is preferred but not required.

Are well-versed in issues relevant to our business. Primarily: structuring and negotiating commercial and strategic transactions, licensing (especially open source licenses), tax, intellectual property, mergers/acquisitions, and privacy. Everything at Automattic is done on a global scale and in an international context; bonus points for breadth of experience outside of the US.

Possess an agile and curious mind. You’re not afraid to ask questions or admit when you are wrong.

Are business minded and very practical in addressing legal issues. We don’t write a lot of memos at Automattic. We solve problems and get things done.

Have a healthy sense of humor, and an abiding spirit of idealism about your chosen profession.

Operate very independently.

Recognize that law is about the grey areas, and are comfortable living in them, while giving clear and actionable advice.

Excel at understanding complex topics and explaining them to others in clear, concise, terms.

Are a great writer.

Love the open internet and all it stands for.

Thrive in a tech-centered, developer-focused environment.

The best part of the job will be its unpredictability. There are no “typical days.” You embrace this. Some of the things you might work on include:

Mergers/acquisitions, often cross-border.

Financing transactions, both venture capital/equity and debt.

Developing cutting edge, user-centered policies for protecting intellectual property online.

Structuring, negotiating and drafting deals with our business and technical partners.

Developing litigation strategy and managing Automattic’s cases around the world.

Building our international subsidiary and tax structure, to support business growth and hiring around the world.

Cheerfully helping all Automatticians clear the legal hurdles that arise in their jobs: from accounting, licensing, copyright, immigration, tax, HR… and everything in between.

Like all positions at Automattic, you’ll work remotely, and can be based wherever you live. It’s not a requirement that you live in or relocate to the Bay Area to do this job.

How to Apply

Does this sound interesting? If yes, please send a short email to jobs @ this domain telling us about yourself and attach a résumé. Let us know what you can contribute to the team. Include the title of the position you’re applying for and your name in the subject. Proofread! If you apply for multiple positions or send multiple emails there will be one reply.

Want to increase your chances of standing out? If so, please address some or all of following points in your application:

Tell us about your experience with blogging, online publishing, WordPress, or the GPL.

What’s the one area of internet law that vexes you, and what would you do to fix it?

What is your approach to negotiation, and what do you think makes a good business deal?

Please make sure to include at least one lawyer joke in the materials you submit.

Our fast-growing team of more than 300 works from home, in one of 36 countries, to democratize publishing with WordPress and make the web a better place. See Work With Us for more info. Our People and Places team’s goal is to ensure our company is the best place Automatticians have ever worked.
We have a “Lounge” in the South of Market neighborhood in San Francisco that is the anchor for our company and our global team. It hosts local team members for co-working, frequent guests, meetings with clients and partners, and events. We are looking for a Lounge Assistant to manage this “home away from home” and be our indispensable office manager. The ideal candidate should enjoy creating a happy and healthy office and be excited about working independently to accomplish tasks and solve problems (no matter how big or small).
Things that will make you great at this role:
Experience with a lean, fast-growing, fast-paced software, internet, or creative startup.
A passion for technology and learning new systems. Google Docs and WordPress are daily apps. Comfort with Apple devices.
Experience working with remote or distributed teams.
A passion for elegant, simple solutions that keep operations running smoothly
Boundless energy to follow up on open items daily and drive everything to its conclusion.
Have a car, a smartphone, and the ability to lift things up to 40 pounds or so.
Prior experience in the hospitality industry.
Responsibilities include:
Manage a 15,000 square feet office space in San Francisco, including all vendors (HVAC, electrical, alarm, plumbing, IT, A/V, appliance repair, furniture, janitorial, plant care).
Run day to day operations for local and visiting Automatticians and guests, including arranging regular grocery orders, stocking the on-site kitchen, etc.
Assist with administrative needs including mail pickup / dropoff, receiving / sorting packages, corralling signatures, plus the occasional errand for local and visiting Automatticians.
Order and maintain all office equipment (monitors, printers, internet, lighting, etc).
Coordinate fulfillment center, including customized staff Timbuk2 backpacks, other new hire welcome packages, holiday gifts, swag, and holiday cards.
Coordinate online merchandise store, including procuring new products, maintaining inventory, and managing shipping.
Coordinate Manage Automattic & third party events.

This position is different from others at Automattic in that it’s based in Houston, TX. You’ll be joining the support staff of the CEO of Automattic, Matt Mullenweg, alongside his EA of five years, Rose Goldman. Most of your time will be spent working in Houston dealing with online and administrative tasks. The job will evolve and vary a lot, so you should be curious and enjoy learning new things. You’ll be directly responsible for assisting in all business and personal matters.
To repeat, please only apply if you’re in Houston — different from other roles at Automattic we’re not interested in any other locations for this role.
Skills that will make you great at this role:
Excellent communication, time management, and organizational skills, handling everything with a high-level professionalism and confidentiality.
You must be meticulous, patient, hard working, reliable, have a thick skin, and be a self-starter.
The ability to interact with all levels of staff from janitors to CEOs in a fast-paced, changing environment while remaining flexible, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.
You should have refined taste, discretion, represent your employer well, and be able to make decisions on his behalf.
You should enjoy technology and learning new systems. Google Docs and WordPress are daily apps. Preferably comfortable on Apple devices.
Available to travel at least 4 weeks a year.
You can handle anything thrown at you. (Really, anything.)
Comfortable with pets (cats and dogs).
You should have reliable transportation, a modern smartphone, and ability to lift things up to 40 pounds or so.
Be able to aggressively follow up on open items daily, driving everything to its conclusion.
Great references and two years of experience as a personal or administrative assistant and/or work in technology.
Skills that would be great, but are not at all required: accounting or bookkeeping experience, party and event planning, experience working with high-profile individuals, non-profit experience, investment firm experience, maintaining a blog or personal website, fluency in languages other than English, coding or scripting ability, typing in the Dvorak or Colemak layout.
You can work out of the home office of the employer, from your home, or on the road. You must be accessible and ready to work 24/7, however actual work hours are flexible. And just to repeat from earlier, you should live in Houston.
We’ll also refer to friend of Automattic Tim Ferriss’ “downsides” description when looking for a managing editor:
Alas, I still prefer the Shackleton approach to job descriptions. Being my Managing Editor will not be easy. Rewarding? Definitely. Exciting at many times? Absolutely. Easy? Not likely. Think of it like a professional sports team. I’m not going to haze you or anything stupid, but my content works because I take it very, very seriously. […]
Here are some fair expectations:
I’m an unrelenting perfectionist. If you’re not the same, it will probably make you insane.
I live and die by deadlines. They are absolutely sacred, and I am merciless about this.
You will need to be self-directed and very self-organized. Besides inflexible deadlines, I won’t provide a lot of structure. I assume you’re bringing a lot of your own process and best practices.
You need good mental and physical stamina, and you MUST have the discipline to “turn off” and recharge during off hours. You should have a regular exercise regimen or activities for decompressing.
