Position: Cloud Engineer

To support our growing team, we are looking for an engineer to work with our platform team. You’re the right fit if you’re the best and there’s not a problem you can’t solve. We need an experienced engineer who has a broad background across multiple infrastructure areas to work with our team as they continue to build capabilities within public cloud. We’re looking for self-motivated and self-driven engineers who are passionate about what they do and love technology. We need an engineer that is always developing solutions with scalability, availability and security in mind and seeks to understand how the applications are running on their infrastructure.

You will be working on the platform team building systems in the cloud for applications to run on. These systems support the future development of the client and planner experiences for Northwestern Mutual. The team is located in Milwaukee but has the opportunity to travel to the New York office (Learnvest) as needed.

Your general milestones are as follows:

  • Within the first month – while working with engineers on the teams, be able to jump head-first into enhancing the platform and ask the appropriate questions / do the appropriate research to identify the general functions and behaviors of the system.

  • Within three months – have proficient knowledge of the platform and be able to take the reins around backlog items and appropriately develop and implement solutions to the platform.

  • Within six to nine months – be able to navigate the full stack of the platform and supporting components, contributing directly to engineering discussions that affect the current and future state of the applications. Essentially, contributing to the team at your full capacity.

Competencies

  • Fast learner and self-starter. The people you will work with are incredibly kind and extremely willing to share knowledge and a helping hand, but you have to be willing to take ownership of the outlined goals and make things happen.

  • Ability to take initiative and work with minimal supervision, yet actively interact with other team members in person or over the Internet (chat, videoconference, email).

  • Work collaboratively on creative solutions with engineers, product managers and designers.

  • Bring new ideas and new ways of solving problems to the team.

About Us

We’re a small, fully-remote team focussed on building great products for an industry (commercial real estate) that’s still largely undisrupted by technology. Our wild start-up days are behind us – we're all grown up and profitable now with a 15-year track record and users who love us. We launched a new product last year that's driving a lot of growth, and we could use some help wrangling our systems.

You'll be in charge of our cloud infrastructure, working with our team of full-stack engineers to evolve and improve it as we grow.

Our Stack

We're not dogmatic about tools and technologies -- we use whatever best fits the job. At the moment, our infrastructure is entirely on AWS including use of EC2, RDS, ECS, S3, Elasticache, Route 53, SES, VPC, Lambda, Cloudwatch, IAM.

We're also making use of:

  • Terraform for managing AWS VPC infrastructure
  • Salt for managing our EC2 environments
  • Kubernetes for Docker orchestration
  • GitLab CI for building and deploying Docker containers
  • ELK for managing logs
  • Sensu/Grafana for monitoring and metrics
  • PagerDuty for supporting issues in production

Plus a few other bits to round out the buzzword soup: NGINX, JBoss/WildFly, OpenVPN, RabbitMQ, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Postgres, MySQL

About You

  • You have production experience supporting, securing, and scaling complex web applications hosted on AWS using most of the above technologies.
  • You're reachable, communicative, and functional at 3am when the sky is falling.
  • You once unwittingly hacked into a military supercomputer running war simulations, believing it was just a game.
  • Like us, you value stability, work/life balance, group decisions, and working with people that are good-natured, interesting, hard-working, and self-motivated.
  • You hate both the corporate bureaucracy of a big company and the uncertainty of a start-up. You like having reasonable hours and knowing that your job will be around next week.
  • You're looking for a family to join, rather than a stepping stone toward another gig.

This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, remote, W2 position with benefits (health/dental/vision/401k).

To apply: Please send a note to paul@catylist.com explaining why you're a fit for our team. Include a resume and anything else that will help us understand how 1337 you are.

Elastic is the world's leading software provider for making structured and unstructured data usable in real time for search, logging, security and analytics use cases. Founded in 2012 by the people behind the Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, and Beats open source projects, Elastic's global community has more than 50,000 members across 45 countries, and since its initial release, Elastic's products have achieved more than 50 million cumulative downloads. Today thousands of organizations like Cisco, eBay, Dell, Goldman Sachs, Groupon, HP, Microsoft, Netflix, NY Times, Uber, Verizon, Yelp, and Wikipedia use the Elastic Stack, X-Pack, and Elastic Cloud to power mission critical systems that drive new revenue opportunities and massive cost savings. Elastic is backed by $104 million in funding from Benchmark Capital, Index Ventures, and NEA; has headquarters in Amsterdam and Mountain View, California; and has over 350 employees in over 30 countries around the world.

As product adoption has soared within organizations ranging from the world’s largest financial institutions like Goldman Sachs, government organizations like NASA, large technology firms like Adobe, Cisco, HP, IBM, Microsoft, and Salesforce, and innovative companies like BlaBlaCar, Facebook, Github, Netflix, Uber, Yelp and Wikipedia, demand for hosted and managed Elasticsearch solutions have increasingly been on the rise for developers and companies who want a cloud option.

In March 2015, Elastic launched Elasticsearch as a Service. Today, the Elastic Cloud (hosted on AWS) is the only hosted Elasticsearch product on the market supported by the creators and engineers of the Elastic Stack. In addition, the Elastic Cloud is the only solution fully integrated with Elastic’s X-Pack plugins (security, alerting, monitoring, graph, and reporting) and continuously aligned to the latest version of the Elastic Stack.

Just like the success of our open source products, we are experiencing the same with the Elastic Cloud. Thus, we are seeking an exceptional finance professional to drive all financial planning, reporting, and analysis efforts to help grow and scale our cloud business. This role will provide the analysis needed to evolve our understanding of our cloud business, provide recommendations to maximize the opportunity ahead while balancing risk, and help facilitate executive decision making. This person should bring a passion to evolve our financial analysis while working seamlessly across Field Operations, Product Management, and Finance to grow and scale the Elastic Cloud.

Responsibilities

  • Own all monthly Cloud related KPIs (e.g., net expansion)
  • Own the end-to-end Cloud budget and forecast process working closely with sales ops for bookings input, along with monthly actual to plan variance analysis of the financial elements to provide an understanding of the deltas and drivers.
  • Build out and maintain a comprehensive model to measure the dynamics across the Cloud business end-to-end from website visitors to customer acquisition, bookings, revenue, expense and cash flow, working with the sales operations team for input to point of bookings.
  • Support territory carving and GTM resource planning to optimize our coverage model across top markets and our incentive comp strategy across all GTM roles.
  • Gather market intelligence to benchmark growth, renewal, expansion, and margins / profitability against other cloud businesses.
  • Provide insight and data points to assist with pricing strategy decisions and sensitivity analysis in respect to margin implications.
  • Develop a model for AWS usage to optimize cost considering commitment vs datacenter utilization, analyzing cost components and drivers. Review all AWS bills to ensure accuracy.
  • Identify and recommend actions to improve margins.

    Desired Background

  • BS/BA required, MBA a strong plus but not required.
  • 5+ years work experience in FP&A, Management Consulting, or similar field in SaaS organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to structure complex problems, develop solutions, and craft recommendations and results into easily digestible messages, communications, and executive presentations.
  • Very strong executive presence and engagement skills.
  • Highly collaborative style with strong influence skills and the ability to adjust on the fly to new demands with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast paced start-up environment.
  • Power user proficiency with the MS Office suite (especially MS Excel and MS Powerpoint). VBA and Macros a plus but not required.

Big dreams often start small. From an idea in a London pub, we have grown into a global cloud enabler which operates across 7 countries and speak 30 languages.

Our mission at Cloudreach is to 'enable innovation'. We do this by helping enterprise customers adopt and harness the power of cloud computing. We believe that the growth of a great business can only be fuelled by great people, so join us in our partnership with AWS, Microsoft and Salesforce and help us build one of the most disruptive companies in the cloud industry. It's not your average job, because Cloudreach is not your average company.

Overlooking Munich, our office is located on the 8th floor of a modern and light building, a short stroll away from Hirschgarten. How about a view of the Alps from your Cloudy Hub ?

What does the Cloud Enablement team do ?

How will you spend your days ?

  • Adventures in developing cloud-native distributed systems, container orchestration platforms, microservice and serverless architectures, and immutable infrastructure delivery.
  • Orchestration and automation of build and deployment processes, continuous integration and application configuration management.
  • Using automation and configuration management tooling to ensure compliance and ongoing operation of large estates.
  • Migrations of legacy workloads to transform and shape them into dynamic, resilient and scalable platforms -- helping clients to make the most of the cloud.

Are you passionate about transforming IT infrastructure to be more efficient, more scalable, and more cost effective?

Cloudreach is an idea that started out in a London pub that is now a global cloud enabler and one of the world's largest AWS partners. We have hubs in North America and Europe, with more certified technical staff than anyone else in the world. Cloudreach works on challenging technical projects such as data center migrations, data analytics, and managing digital estates. This is not your average company; we keep our feet on the ground and our heads in the cloud.

We're looking to bring on systems engineers to implement challenging technical solutions for industry leading clients.

How will you spend your time at Cloudreach?

You will be working in the following areas (and more!):

  • Green field development of Amazon Web Services infrastructure (EC2, RDS, EMR, etc), e.g. looking at an existing service or data centre and then architecting a more effective solution in AWS. You might work on a major eCommerce platform, a MySQL database migration, or building a scalable mobile backend
  • DevOps: Systems engineering work with frameworks such as Chef or Puppet - as well as helping to break down barriers between silo'd teams. We automate everything
  • Technical deployment and consultancy - for example designing a complex Single Sign On solution
  • Not doing any out of hours shift work - yay!

What do we look for?
  • You've studied Engineering, Computer Science or a similar subject
  • You're super motivated and have at least a year's working experience. We can find a great role for you with 1 year or with 10+ years experience
  • Scripting skills - ideally Python or Ruby, but talk to us if you love to hack in any language. We look for people who automate everything where sensible. If you had 10 servers, you wouldn't update each one manually right?
  • You'll probably prefer a command line to a GUI
  • Solid knowledge of Linux (or perhaps Windows) Systems Administration/Engineering

What are our cloudy perks?
  • Unique 'cloudy' culture where we keep our feet on the ground and our heads in the Clouds - this year's project is building a Quadcopter on our 3D printer
  • Uncapped holiday + your birthday off to open your presents/eat lots of cake
  • Great career development opportunities with an assigned mentor
  • Centrally-located offices - where the cool kids hang out
  • Good food and team 'cloudy' lunches, taking over a restaurant every Friday
  • If you do something amazing, we'll give you a spot bonus
  • The chance to work on side tech projects to build something cool, unrelated to your day to day work
  • Overseas work opportunities - if you want them
  • Working with a collaborative, social team and levelling-up your skills faster than you will anywhere else

Requisition Number 15-0087

Job Description

The successful candidate will join our developer's team supporting a large infrastructure that supplies precision agriculture API, web, and mobile app services. We focus on increasing how many API calls/second we can support, reducing the latency of each API call, and of course on availability. The predominance of this work will be in cloud infrastructure providers such as Amazon EC2 and others.

A strong candidate will have experience with building automated and scalable management systems that can rapidly deploy systems in response to changing demands. We want people who would rather work with configuration management and automated deployment tools than execute the same command time and time again. We are firm believers of using and customizing automated tools.

Members of the developer team enjoy flexibility. On-call responsibilities are shared with the rest of the developers team for full 24x7x52 coverage. The team self-schedules on-call coverage. We strongly believe in fixing the root of the problem to prevent it from happening again, rather than simply dealing with the symptom. The position can either be in any of the Iteris offices around the country or a work from home position. For remote workers some additional travel will be required for multi-day team meetings.

Qualifications Required

  • B.S or B.A in Computer Science or related technical field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience including Unix system administration
  • Three (3) years of relevant experience with scripting languages such as Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, or Shell
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience in network administration such as BGP, OSPF, VLANs, and firewalls

    Qualifications Desired

  • Strong experience with administering systems and networks in Amazon AWS, Google Compute Engine, or other IaaS providers
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience, including high-volume or critical production service environments
  • Experience leading teams and/or projects
  • Significant experience with high availability and scalable clusters of SQL databases. (We use MySQL and Postgres.)
  • Experience with NoSQL databases is a distinct advantage. We have a large Cassandra cluster and also use MongoDB, Couchbase, and Redis
  • Proven technical troubleshooting and performance tuning experience
  • Relevant configuration management experience with CFEngine, Chef, or Puppet
  • Excellent analytical skills, coupled with a strong sense of ownership, urgency and drive
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills; capable of training users and writing documentation and policies
  • Good experience in automated monitoring and notification systems for production environments
  • Fundamental understanding of operating systems (e.g. user space v. kernel space, inter-process communications, differentiation of layers in the network stack, routing v. switching)
  • Ability to research and troubleshoot problems outside of comfort zone and knowledge base
  • Experience with HTTP caches, both on-site and distributed caches (such as CDN services)
  • Experience with supporting 7x24x52 production systems in complex configurations

Apply

As a Site Reliability Engineer at ReactiveOps, your primary goal will be to ensure our client’s applications are available, fast, and secure. Our clients need the best service, support, and products, and we need you to help us deliver.

JOB DESCRIPTION

At ReactiveOps, we offer two main products: DevOps consulting and managed operations. Through DevOps consulting, we write infrastructure automation, migrate to high-availability solutions, and craft Docker/CoreOS microservices architectures for our clients. You’ll work directly with clients to ensure their goals are met through automation, analysis, and infrastructure configuration.

Via managed operations, we act as our client's “outsourced, in-house DevOps team”, on top of AWS and other cloud vendors, as best meets our client’s needs. You’ll manage globally load balanced AWS installations, cross-datacenter replication on different vendors, or within client’s data-centers.

No matter the product, we take a DevOps-centric approach with our clients - we believe that we provide amazing service and our clients get the best value when we work closely together. We integrate task trackers (Pivotal, Trello, Asana), chat (Slack, Hipchat), and source control (github) into our own workflow through careful and clever use of automation, giving our clients the ability to contact us like they would with an internal DevOps team but without an operational burden on us.

You’ll work with virtualization and container technologies like Docker, CoreOS, Kubernetes, OpenStack, Vagrant, and Ansible. You will setup and automate high availability data clusters (MySQL Galera, PostgreSQL replication, Redis cluster, ElasticSearch clustering, Memcached, MongoDB etc.), application instances for technologies like Ruby-on-Rails, Django, Node, and Scala (to name a few). You'll engineer management, orchestration, monitoring, and alerting for fleets of instances. If you’ve ever wanted to work at a scale that few companies do, you’ll find the right challenge here at ReactiveOps!

We all work from home and have a “Remote First” culture. We are a Results-Only Work Environment, have a transparent and public technical ladder, minimum vacation policy and unlimited time off, and require healthy work-life balance. We pay 100% of individual and family health insurance premiums, participate in 401k match and have been bootstrapped and profitable since our founding. All employees participate in quarterly profit sharing, and we all get together for periodic all-expenses-paid retreats.

We're hiring across experience bands from mid to senior levels.

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Perform DevOps-focused consulting work for diverse clients
  • Create and maintain system architecture, design, and automation
  • Pair with other SRE/SAs, mentor junior staff
  • Release and maintain open-source software and projects
  • Author blog posts and participate in the community by going to meetups, conferences, etc. as a ReactiveOps representative
  • Manage availability and performance problems for clients; automate resolution to prevent re-occurrence

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient in Ruby, Python, or JavaScript
  • Significant experience with config management or automation frameworks like Chef, Puppet, or Ansible
  • 4 years maintaining production infrastructure on a Linux environment
  • Intermediate Ubuntu system administration skills
  • Strong DevOps experience and client service skills
  • Ability to participate in on-call/pager rotation as necessary

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5-8 years maintaining high volume, distributed production infrastructure and microservices/Docker architectures
  • Superior DevOps mentality and client service skills
  • Strong Ubuntu system administration skills
  • Deep experience debugging, profiling, upgrading Ruby on Rails, NodeJS, or Python applications and application servers
  • Previous database administration experience

Zoomer is building a new take on food delivery - a platform to handle an extraordinarily high volume of concurrent deliveries from restaurants that already deliver (i.e. pizza, wings, sandwiches, etc.). Our restaurants and their customers love the service, and our order volume is surging. You’ll make a real impact working to build and scale Zoomer as we continue to grow to new restaurants and territories.

We have amazing investors behind us, including Y Combinator (S14), First Round Capital, SV Angel, CrunchFund, Eric Ries, Gabriel Weinberg, the founder of DuckDuckGo and others. This is your opportunity to get in on the ground-floor. You’ll have a ton of impact – lots of freedom to evolve our platform, stack, and apps. We follow strong dev practices, put an emphasis on testing, and deploy rapidly.

  • Expert knowledge of AWS
  • Experience with related technologies (Docker, Ansible, Cloud Formation, Git)
  • Deep understanding of cloud architecture & best practices (i.e. high availability)
  • Passionate about infrastructure as code and automation
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skillset

    EXPERIENCE DESIRED

  • Excellent track record of delivering and maintaining scalable, continuously deployed infrastructure
  • BS in computer science or related discipline, or comparable experience

    BENEFITS

  • Get in on the ground floor of an experienced startup engineering team, with direct influence over the product and technology
  • Extremely flexible work schedule
  • Unlimited vacation time
  • Build or buy your ideal workstation

  • Product and engineering for Zoomer is headquartered in San Francisco but we have talented developers working remotely to help tackle very unique and extremely complex problems. We place a big emphasis on using the best tools and processes so that the entire company can collaborate from wherever we are - Zoomer has teams in each geography that we’re delivering in.

Who we are

With LaterPay, we want to change the way people buy and sell digital content on the Internet. Why? Because we believe paying for digital content should be fast, convenient, and fair. And because we think you should be able to buy the exact piece of content you want.

We want to create a great software product which influences and changes the way people use paid content of any kind on the Internet. The usage of paid content should be as easy and convenient as going out to dinner: you are served first and pay later. We want to build a user-centric product that makes users feel smart. It should represent the simplest, most secure way to buy digital goods. We want to change the way people regard paid content, turning it into a great experience. We want to enable businesses to offer "paid content as a service", convincing users of their content's value instead of forcing them to pay before actually getting the content.

We want to create an environment of excellence in which performance meets comfort and fun. We have an office, located in the center of Munich next to the Isar River, but around half of the company works remotely, meeting up together every few months.

About You

After joining the ops team at LaterPay, you will often work independently to help take our current automated infrastructure to the cloud. Your responsibilities would involve a very proactive approach to successfully planning, building and maintaining our platform into the future.

Here at LaterPay we believe that work is about doing something you enjoy and that it should be self motivating. This is a hands-on position where you will lead by example, oversee project and architecture decisions and help others build the next big thing.

You will implement best practises in security, manage operations and implement seamless upgrades with the team.

What we have

We're primarily built around Python/Django, deployed as RPMs by Jenkins to a handful of CentOS boxen in a local datacentre, configured with Puppet.

We've got PostgreSQL, we've got Redis, we've got a Cassandra cluster.

Right now, we're looking at moving that to AWS.

We'll want you to help with that.

Slack, JIRA, and GitHub are our working tools.

Icinga, Graphite and ELK help us know what's going on.

Things we're particularly looking for

  • Demonstrated previous responsibility for maintaining high-availability systems
  • Experience using Puppet, especially around testing and deployment
  • Experience with AWS - particularly Elastic Beanstalk, DynamoDB and VPCs and related services
  • Familiarity with the "Twelve-Factor App" principles (http://12factor.net/)
  • A penchant for multitasking when needed
  • Capacity and forecast planning
  • Experience in ensuring PCI-DSS compliance

DESCRIPTION

At Are You a Human, we’re dedicated to making the digital world better for real humans. Automated programs, called bots, account for 61% of overall internet traffic today-- and as the world becomes more digital, this will only increase. Ultimately, bots make it more difficult for real humans to get what they need from the Internet, and more difficult for companies who serve humans to provide high quality content and services cost-effectively. Instead of searching for bots, which evolve in a matter of days, we find and verify humans by analyzing natural user behavior across millions of websites.

Before being in the business of verifying humans, members of our team were busy founding multiple previous companies, developing Amazon’s AWS system, and being part of three acquisitions and one IPO. We’re a quirky bunch that brings years of experience in advertising technology, IT infrastructure, and business consulting to our work.

REQUIREMENTS

We just closed a Series A and we’re looking to hire back-end developers (both junior and senior level) to join our team help develop our highly scalable systems using and creating a variety of different technologies.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • 3+ years software development experience
  • Proficient in two or more languages and willing to learn more
  • Passionate about writing good code
  • Willing to learn from as well as help others on the team
  • Object oriented design and development experience
  • Familiar with large, scalable systems
  • Comfortable using git (or other source code management system)
  • Experience with: AWS or other cloud infrastructure, relational db’s, memcached or similar, Laravel (or similar MVC), web development, *nix environment

    BENEFITS

In addition to making the digital world better for real humans, we’re also dedicated to building a workplace that's great for the real Humans we employ.

    We offer our Humans:

  • Health and dental Insurance options
  • Ownership of company shares
  • Unlimited vacation policy
  • Catered team lunches
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Casual dress code and work environment
  • Great office space that overlooks Comerica Park in the heart of downtown Detroit (we have lots of natural light, ping pong tables, and tons of snacks and beer)
  • A family of coworkers (complete with movie screenings, game nights, sailing outings and company camping trips)
  • The opportunity to be part of a core team where everything you do will have a meaningful impact
