Forerunner is hiring a Remote Senior Full Stack Engineer
Hi! We're Forerunner.\n\nWe believe that climate adaptation is a necessity, not a luxury, and communities deserve access to powerful software that helps them plan for the future. The challenge of climate change is complex โ it implicates how municipalities plan, manage capital, and communicate to both residents and higher levels of government. Forerunner helps local communities do these things better by empowering them to access, understand, and mobilize local-level flood risk data at scale.\n\n\nThe Role\n\nThe engineering team at Forerunner strives to be small but dedicated, working relentlessly to help local governmental bodies and their floodplain managers reason about the flooding risks that all communities face in the USA. The domain is complicated, nuanced, and rapidly changing, and we at Forerunner break down this complexity for our users so they can do what truly matters - fight against climate change and the possible loss of homes in the case of flooding.\n\nEngineers at Forerunner can work remotely from anywhere within the United States, so long as they are willing to work on either Eastern or Central timezones. We offer schedule flexibility and ask for accountability in return. We are unable to sponsor H1-B visas at this time, so permanent residency or citizenship is required.\n\nOur tech stack and other engineering tools include, but are not limited to:\n\n\n* Typescript / React.js / React Native frontend with jest for testing\n\n* GraphQL API powered by a Node.js / Typescript backend with jest for testing.\n\n* Postgres as our database, alongside heavy use of postgis\n\n* git, Github and Github Actions for code review and CI\n\n* Deployment to AWS using ECS and similar products\n\n* A variety of other cloud providers, such as GCP\n\n\n\n\nWhile expertise with all of the technologies above is by no means not necessary, a working understanding of at least a few of them is required.\n\nWe strongly encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply - the problem of climate change has an impact on all of us, and we want to reflect that within our team's composition.\nWhat You'll Do\n\nA Senior Full-Stack Engineer at Forerunner has the following responsibilities:\n\n\n* Build, test, and review software on a day-to-day basis, working within our frontends, backends, and with the underlying data modeling that underpins them. This means working on a postgres query one day and on a React component the next, all the while making sure this work is adequately tested.\n\n* Do the occasional dev-ops and support work. We use AWS as our cloud provider, but we have no dedicated SRE or dev-ops team, and so sometimes engineers may have to help with the plumbing.\n\n* Occasionally pair-program with and help mentor peers. This means hoping on a Slack or Zoom call with another engineer to collaborate on a particularly thorny piece of code or to talk through different approaches that can be used to solve the problem at hand.\n\n* Help plan medium- to large-sized projects across the stack. The engineering team gives all engineers the opportunity to plan out and execute on large features, and as a senior engineer, you'd be responsible from the more time-sensitive, complicated projects.\n\n* Seek out clarity in the face of ambiguity. Domain expertise is always hard to come by and benefits from dedicated time and curiosity - we are learning a lot from our partners and this reflects in the work we do, so ask questions.\n\n* Communicate clearly, whether in a stand-up meeting, planning meeting, or otherwise. We're a small team working entirely remotely, which requires us to be prompt and clear with both written and spoken communication.\n\n\n\nWhat We Offer\n\nForerunner is an early stage company with an interdisciplinary team. We are motivated by seemingly intractable problems and work hard to support one another.\n\nWe're mission-driven. Our mission orients our business strategy and pushes us to work with a sense of urgency. Weโre in the weeds - our entire team spends time engaging with our partners in the field to better understand the real-world problems they face.\n\nWe're a small team. As a member of our growing team, you will quickly become an invaluable part of our organization and have a meaningful impact on our business and technical direction. We welcome unique perspectives and backgrounds. Your opinion matters and we hope you'll share it.\n\nWe build each other up. A team works best when its members are adequately equipped with the tools to tackle the problems they are facing. Forerunner strives to provide adequate feedback and appropriate learning opportunities to help all its team members expand their skills.\n\nWe want you to be happy and healthy. Forerunner offers competitive compensation, health/vision/dental coverage, a 401k plan, and one expensed lunch per week. We also have a quarterly wellness reimbursement so that you can have flexibility in defining what โhealthโ means to you.\n\nThe salary range for this position is $140,000-$190,000. This posting may span more than one career level. Compensation is determined based on a variety of factors, including an individualโs skills, experience, qualifications, and working location. \n\n#Salary and compensation\n

You'll also get the chance to work on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Large Language Models (LLMs) to build things like message generating systems.\n \nSome of our coding conventions are open-source . \n \nKraken is a great place to learn, work with some talented engineers and level-up your skills. \n \nOur technology\n\n\nOur Data/ML stack includes: Python, SQL, pandas, Numpy, AWS, PyTorch, TensorFlow, NLP. \n\n\nOn the server-side, we mainly use Python. See, for example, Django, ELB health checks and continuous delivery. \n \nClient-side, we use React, htmx and SASS; our mobile apps are built using native code or React Native.\n\n\n\nWhat you'll do\n* Design, build, and deploy cutting-edge machine learning systems to address complex business challenges\n* Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams including product managers, software engineers, and other stakeholders to deliver exceptional ML products\n* Stay at the forefront of technology. Explore and evaluate new technologies to inspire the creation of new ML products and enhance existing ones\n* Conduct A/B experiments in collaboration with other teams, analyse results, and iterate to drive continuous improvement\n* Embrace ambiguity. As we scale, your role will evolve, and you should be comfortable adapting to changing responsibilities and focus areas\n\n\n\nWhat you'll need\n* You have a proven track record with 5+ years of hands-on experience applying machine learning to real-world business challenges within an industry setting\n* A solid foundation in the fundamentals of machine learning is a must. You are proficient in exploratory data analysis, model selection, model pipeline development, and the end-to-end process of model deployment and monitoring\n* Demonstrated expertise in Python, SQL, and common ML, DL and visualisation libraries such as pandas, numpy, scikit-learn, tensorflow/pytorch, matplotlib etc.\n* Experienced in cloud technologies, preferably with AWS\n* Strong communication skills are essential. You can articulate complex technical concepts to a diverse range of stakeholders with clarity\n* Proficient in software engineering fundamentals including version control and CI/CD pipelines\n* Nice to have:\n\n\n* Experience building NLP products\n* Experience using dbt\n\n\n\nWhy else you'll love it here\n* Wondering what the salary for this role is? You do also need to be able to work in the UK. \n\n\nWe're very excited to be growing our team. We're looking for skills and experience to help shape and define the future of not only our team, but the wider business at a global scale. If you're reading this and grinning, please apply! There are huge challenges to tackle, and we need amazing people who are keen to get stuck in.\n\n\n\n\nIf this sounds like you then we'd love to hear from you. \n\n\nStudies have shown that some groups of people, like women, are less likely to apply to a role unless they meet 100% of the job requirements.
