Render is hiring a
Remote Software Engineer Managed Datastores

\nAt Render we are building a powerful, easy-to-use cloud platform to host anything online: from simple static sites to complex applications with dozens of microservices. Render offers the flexibility of traditional cloud providers without their complexity and maintenance headaches so developers and businesses can focus on building products instead of managing servers.\n\nWe're a talented and diverse group solving a problem faced by every development team. We iterate quickly while placing the utmost importance on user experience, quality, and reliability. We push ourselves to do better every day. With tens of thousands of customers and rapidly increasing revenue, we're on to something big.\nApplying to Render\n\nRender is scaling rapidly. Our customers have created hundreds of thousands of services on our platform, and the numbers continue to accelerate. Our customers trust us to deliver a secure, reliable and performant cloud โ€” this is our top priority as a company.\n\nWe're looking for candidates with high integrity, low ego, and an insatiable drive to learn. We use reasoned discussion and constant feedback to improve as individuals and as a company. We cultivate mutual trust and respect, empowering us to debate ideas effectively and create the best outcomes for our customers and our team.\n\nWe especially encourage members of underrepresented groups in the tech community to apply and understand that not all successful candidates will meet each requirement listed.\n\nOur interview process is unique to each role, and we value the candidate experience just as much as our customer experience. We hope your conversations with us reflect a thoughtful process that is illuminative, enjoyable, and respectful of your time.\nAbout the Role\n\nWe are looking for an experienced backend software engineer with a specialization in Database-as-a-Service, building solutions that use open source databases to store and retrieve data. We are particularly interested in experience with running distributed self-serve systems on Kubernetes or supporting many different types of databases.\n\nRender's Datastores team is building easy-to-start and easy-to-scale structured data storage products for our customers: product engineers. Our customers want to minimize their time managing their databases and focus on adding value to their products and businesses. We build powerful, flexible tools that scale with our customers needs with little effort from them. Render's Datastore products provide our customers optimization insights and advanced workflows when it becomes appropriate for them, without having to hire a DBA or operations team.\n\nWe give our users peace of mind and confidence that their data is in a reliable and secure product. Whether the user is creating their first PostgreSQL instance or has worked with databases for years, our interfaces will be intuitive and easy to use.\n\nBy joining us at an early stage, you will design and build the cloud infrastructure databases you've always wanted for yourself, and make decisions that will shape our product and company, directly impacting developers around the globe.\nYou will:\n\n\n* Build new features of our managed database offerings to delight our customers (currently, we offer PostgreSQL and Redis).\n\n* Collaborate with other engineers on high-impact projects like high availability failover, point in time recovery, zero downtime upgrades, and automated performance tuning.\n\n* Improve the metrics and insights available to our users so they understand their performance, optimize their usage, and control when we run maintenance on their database.\n\n* Develop Kubernetes operators that automate databases on our platform.\n\n* Improve the performance and reliability of our managed database offerings.\n\n* Debug issues at all levels in our infrastructure stack.\n\n* Improve the performance and reliability of databases through increased observability, load testing, and chaos engineering.\n\n* Participate in our on-call rotation, with the rest of the engineering team.\n\n\n\nWeโ€™re looking for:\n\n\n* 6+ years full-time experience developing, maintaining, and debugging production systems at scale.\n\n* Experience building, operating and scaling workloads on Kubernetes clusters.\n\n* Deep experience in databases, including but not limited to PostgreSQL, MySQL, Redis, MongoDB, or CockroachDB.\n\n* Experience deploying, operating, and managing production-level PostgreSQL or other database systems at scale (in "as-a-service" environment).\n\n* Experience building and scaling cloud infrastructure.\n\n\n\nNice-to-haves:\n\n\n* Experience with Go or a similar language.\n\n* Familiarity with observability tools like Datadog, Grafana, or SignalFx.\n\n* Experience with infrastructure-as-code tools like Terraform, Pulumi, and Ansible.\n\n* Security hardening skills, especially in the context of untrusted workloads.\n\n\n\nBenefits\n\n\n* Our openings span more than one career level. The starting salary for this role is between $150,000 and $220,000 USD. The provided salary depends on many factors, such as work experience and transferable skills, business needs and impact, and market demands.\n\n* The opportunity is also eligible for equity with early exercise options and extended exercise windows.\n\n* 4 weeks of paid vacation, available from day one.\n\n* 14 weeks of fully paid parental leave for all parents to bond with a newly born, adopted, or fostered child. We will also work with you to create a supportive plan of return.\n\n* Long-term disability, life insurance, and 401K plans.\n\n* 100% employer-paid medical coverage and 99% employer-paid dental and vision coverage for you and a dependent. FSAs available as well.\n\n* Monthly lifestyle stipend for wellness, mental heath and therapy, hobbies, etc. \n\n* Monthly cell phone and internet subsidy.\n\n* Commuter benefits for Renders in the Bay Area, and home office stipends for remote Renders.\n\n* Continuous learning benefits & related support.\n\n\n\n\n \n\nRender is an equal-opportunity employer. Zapier Job Board is hiring a
Remote Engineering Manager Site Reliability

\nJob Posted: 1/4/24\n\nLocation: Americas (Pacific Time)\n\nHi there!\n\nZapierโ€™s on a mission to make everyone more productive at work.  With millions of people benefiting from automation, we're excited to keep expanding our product and team. As we continue to scale our product and grow our team, weโ€™re looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to manage a remotely distributed team of Site Reliability Engineers.\n\nOur Site Reliability Engineers collaborate closely with developers, aiding in the design, automation, and maintenance of services. While developers manage the services themselves, our SREs ensure they have the necessary tools and knowledge for success.\n\nIn this role, you'll work across various teams, ensuring your group offers the right support to developers. You'll coordinate multiple projects and collaborate directly with senior leaders to set project priorities. By nurturing your team's talents, you'll enhance application reliability through a software engineering approach to operations. This position allows you to impact every engineering team within the organization, utilizing a wide range of technologies. Maintaining strong relationships and effective communication with teams is key to your success.\n\nWhen issues arise, your team will be there to address root causes, learn from failures, and establish a robust and resilient system for our customers. We prioritize solutions that automate problems rather than relying on manual efforts.\n\nJoin us in our mission to revolutionize productivity through automation!\n\n \nThings We've Done Recently:\n\n\n* Developed numerous microservices within Kubernetes, spanning across multiple AWS accounts.\n\n* Actively participated in open-source Kubernetes initiatives to bolster our stack's autoscaling capabilities.\n\n* Scaled our infrastructure to effortlessly manage millions of daily requests.\n\n* Successfully executed substantial migrations involving hosting providers, database platforms, and stateful technologies.\n\n* Established efficient deployment pipelines utilizing GitLab and ArgoCD to facilitate continuous delivery.\n\n* Crafted user-friendly tools for instantaneously launching new Kubernetes services with a simple click.\n\n* Our journey has been filled with growth and innovation, and we're excited to continue pushing boundaries!\n\n\n\n\nWe know applying for and taking on a new job at any company requires a leap of faith. We want you to feel comfortable and excited to apply at Zapier. To help share a bit more about life at Zapier, here are a few resources in addition to the job description that can give you an inside look at what life is like at Zapier. Hopefully, you'll take the leap of faith and apply.\n\nOur Commitment to Applicants\n\nCulture and Values at Zapier\n\nZapier Guide to Remote Work\n\nZapier Code of Conduct\n\nDiversity and Inclusivity at Zapier\n\n \nAbout You\n\n\n* \n\nYou're an effective team builder. This isn't your first leadership role and you've been in a direct leadership role for at least two years. You know how to hire, train, and develop Site Reliability Engineers from all backgrounds. You understand the benefits of building a diverse and inclusive SRE team. You value teamwork and believe in helping others feel safe to grow and develop. You help engineers get better at what they do, and you donโ€™t need to be in the same room to help them succeed.\n\n\n* \n\nYou have a background in site reliability engineering. Youโ€™re comfortable talking about SLOs, incident management, and building a culture of reliability. You have empathy for our customers and our engineers who use our systems and are eager to make improvements for them. You seek to reduce toil and understand what it means to take a software engineering approach to operations.\n\n\n* \n\nYou're customer-focused. You seek to delight your customers. You have experience working directly with both internal and external customers to understand their needs. You know how to take a customer problem and help guide your team towards finding and implementing the best solution.\n\n\n* \n\nYou have excellent communication skills. You regularly work with engineers and other stakeholders, balancing engineering concerns (such as technical debt) with product concerns. Not only do you know how to share your knowledge with the team and document things well so they can be consumed asynchronously (we do this a lot as a remote company), but you know how to communicate effectively with software and support teams.\n\n\n* \n\nYouโ€™re a strong leader. You lead by example and empathy, understand the business and how to prioritize project work, emphasize mentorship, and create an environment of learning. You understand that experimentation is essential and know how to support your team through that process. You encourage diversity of thought and know that the team is collectively stronger than any individual.\n\n\n* \n\nYou know the cloud. Youโ€™ve designed and maintained highly available, cloud-based infrastructures in AWS or another cloud offering. You understand how to leverage infrastructure as code tools and have experience implementing best practices for reliability and observability.  We use Terraform, Kubernetes, Redis, GitLab, and Datadog.\n\n\n* \n\nYou can code. You have experience with a language like Python or Go to create automated tools. You believe in hands-off deployments and infrastructure as code. Well-honed expertise with the fundamentals of software development goes a long way here.\n\n\n* \n\nYou value our values. At Zapier, our values are at the heart of how we work together and think about our customers. In our remote setting, they help develop trust and ensure we work and collaborate to democratize automation. You see how these values can empower meaningful work, thrive in a collaborative setting, and are eager to continue growing excited to be part of the team.\n\n\n\n\n\n \nThings Youโ€™ll Do\n\nZapier is a fast-growing company, so you'll likely get experience on many different projects across the organization. Here are some things you'll probably do:\n\n\n* \n\nCollaborate closely with engineering peers to deliver high-quality, reliable, and efficient production software.\n\n\n* \n\n Champion the advancement of Site Reliability Engineering practices within the Engineering department.\n\n\n* \n\nLead the development of incident management processes and on-call response procedures.\n\n\n* \n\nOperate within an agile framework to provide essential infrastructure for Zapier's engineering team.\n\n\n* \n\nExecute the strategic vision of Production Engineering by identifying and delivering relevant backlog items.\n\n\n* \n\nFoster effective communication, monitoring, and leadership through weekly one-on-ones and team meetings.\n\n\n* \n\nKeep the leadership team informed of your team's progress through approaches like one-on-one discussions, updates, and regular team gatherings.\n\n\n* \n\nBuild rapport with each member of your Engineering Team (and beyond!) Support them through coaching and mentorship to help level up their skills.\n\n\n* \n\nActively participate in recruiting, onboarding, and training new engineers at Zapier, which may involve refining interview assessments and documentation.\n\n\n\n\n \nZapier Compensation Guiding Principles\n\nWe believe all Zapiens should be rewarded competitively and equitably, using practices that are simple and transparent. This philosophy ensures weโ€™re able to find, grow, and retain exceptional people from a broad range of backgrounds. Hereโ€™s how we define our compensation principles:\n\n\n* Competitive: Zapier pays well among the technology sector.\n\n* Equitable: Consistent pay practices; Pay for impact.\n\n* Simple: Pay is well understood, and pay practices are built for scale.\n\n* Transparent: Zapiens know how pay works, including how their pay is determined.\n\n\n\n\nThe pay ranges for this role are:\n\nUnited States $184,000- $230,000- $276,000 USD\n\nCanada  $184,000- $230,000- $276,000 CAD\n\nA Candidate's compensation package is finalized once the interview process is concluded and accounts for demonstrated experience, job knowledge, skills,  abilities, and internal equity. We use a business impact approach to base pay, which means we set pay for all Zapier employees based on their demonstrated impact to Zapierโ€™s success. In alignment with that philosophy, the upper half of a pay range is typically reserved for individuals who have consistently demonstrated a high impact in their current role and level while at Zapier.\n\nFor more information on Zapierโ€™s Total Rewards please click here.\n \nHow to Apply\n\n\nAt Zapier, we believe that diverse perspectives and experiences make us better, which is why we have a non-standard application process designed to promote inclusion and equity. We're looking for the best fit for each of our roles, regardless of the type of education or companies in your background, so we encourage you to apply even if your skills and experiences donโ€™t exactly match the job description.
