About the position:
The Wirecutter is seeking an experienced back-end engineer to join our Website and Content Management System team. This is a new position on a team of 4+ engineers, reporting to the Engineering Manager and working closely with product managers and designers. Successful candidates thrive in a fast-paced environment, think critically, communicate clearly, collaborate, solve problems, write quality code, and ship features that achieve business goals.
As a back-end engineer, you’ll play a pivotal role in building the next generation of our platform. You will develop and improve publishing workflows for internal users, REST API endpoints for consumption by the front-end of our application, WordPress plugins and templates, and whatever other functionality the team needs.
You should be comfortable working remotely, and, ideally, you have experience working on a distributed development team.
We have a strong focus on scale, reliability, performance and product agility, and that means picking the right tool for the job, while still being pragmatic and flexible.
The tech stack for the CMS team consists of mainly:
- WordPress - content and user management
- PHP - server-side business logic and custom REST API endpoints
- WP-CLI - command line interface for extracting reports and running batch processes
- JavaScript/jQuery - client-side event handling
- Grunt - task automation
- Sass/CSS - markup styles
- Elasticsearch - indexes content for search queries
About The Wirecutter:
Founded five years ago by journalists fed up with the time and energy it takes to shop, The Wirecutter (which includes its sister site The Sweethome) developed a simpler approach to giving buying advice: just tell people exactly what to get in one single guide. The company’s purpose: to help people find great things, quickly and easily. Through rigorous testing, research, reporting, and whatever means necessary, they create straightforward recommendations that save readers from unnecessary stress, time, and effort. We then monetize these guides by enabling our readers to easily purchase the products they are interested in.
The Wirecutter was recently acquired by, and is now a subsidiary of The New York Times Company. As part of the acquisition, the Times is investing in The Wirecutter to accelerate its business through editorial category expansion, development of more robust product features and unlocking new revenue streams.
Responsibilities:
- Building scalable, high-quality, and innovative product features in WordPress
- Writing code that is simple, reliable, maintainable, performant, functional, and compatible across devices and browsers
- Designing applications with extensibility in mind, while considering efficiency, and the burden of developer onboarding
- Debugging issues reported in our production environment
- Providing level of effort estimates and specifications for upcoming project tasks
- Understanding requirements, discuss trade-offs, and collaborate on the best approach to solving a problem
- Succinctly communicating complex problems and proposed solutions, in writing, and in conversation
- Performing code reviews with meaningful feedback
- Testing and troubleshooting with automated testing or manual quality assurance
Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience developing for WordPress as a content management system
- 3+ years experience with PHP
- Understanding of object oriented software principles and design patterns
- Comfortable using git and the command line
- A demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication skills
- Comfortable working without micro-management of day to day task
Nice to Haves:
- Experience with modern PHP frameworks (Laravel, Symfony, CakePHP, etc.)
- Experience developing and consuming RESTful web services
- Working knowledge of Elasticsearch
- Experience with AWS and Docker
- Experience with automation, build tools, release engineering
- Experience with Apple News, Google Analytics, Doubleclick for Publishers, Google AMP, and Facebook Instant
Culture and benefits at The New York Times Company and The Wirecutter:
- Though The Wirecutter has physical locations in both NYC and LA, the company promotes and encourages a remote workforce, so that our employees can work in flexible and comfortable ways.
- We are committed to career development, supported by a formal mentoring program as well as tuition reimbursement. The New York Times Company offers frequent panel discussions and talks by industry leaders (Sheryl Sandberg, Melinda Gates and Ta-Nehisi Coates are a few recent examples), that we encourage our employees to attend.
- We believe diversity fuels innovation and creativity, and we have a variety of employee groups and task forces across The New York Times Company and The Wirecutter dedicated to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace.
- We offer a generous parental leave policy, which was recently expanded in response to employee feedback. Birth mothers receive 16 weeks fully paid, adoptive parents and birth fathers receive 10 weeks also fully paid. Similarly, we offer competitive health and dental insurance, as well as 401(k) matching.

Action Verb | Back-end/full-stack Engineer (ruby, Java, C++, and Others) for Holacracy-powered 10-person All-remote Engineer-founded Iaas Company
Action Verb

Hi! We’re Action Verb.
We build two Infrastructure-as-a-Service Platforms that Engineering and Marketing professionals use to power their products and services.
Our products include BrickFTP, a hosted file sharing service for business, and Vae Platform, a unique web hosting platform with an integrated CMS system.
Our company consists of 10 full time USA-based Engineers, as well as sales and support outposts in Germany and Latin America. We’re looking to grow our family by three faces.
Our infrastructure platforms are used by over 2,000 enterprises and SMBs, including Mozilla, Canonical, UPS, DirecTV, GoPro, Marriott, and more.
We’ve been able to achieve the rare combination of high double-digit annual growth and industry leading profitability.
We do it by aggressively recruiting the absolute best and brightest engineers and structuring our company in a way that makes them want to work here forever.
It’s easy to say, but exceptionally hard to execute. Here’s how we do it.
We are one of the early adopters of Holacracy, a new style of running an organization in a self-organizing manner that draws inspiration from agile software development and lean manufacturing processes.
Rather than hiring people for exactly one job description, we instead look to find well rounded team members with skills in software engineering, design, marketing, sales, and our other needs who are interested in filling multiple roles within the organization.
As a self-organizing team, our people have multiple roles and our role descriptions are regularly updated via small iterations. As their interests change and our needs change, the roles people fill change dynamically over time.
“Most startups believe in iteration of their products. Now they need to apply the same thinking to their organizations.” – Adam Pisoni, Yammer co-founder & CTO
Holacracy is not unstructured: you’ll have a clear understanding of your current roles and responsibilities, as well as a set of rules and processes for changing those roles and responsibilities in real time.
Even though Holacracy is a lot to learn, we have a great onboarding process and the rest of our team will guide you through your first few months. You’ll also have the opportunity to attend a weeklong official Holacracy training event at our expense.
We also practice Open Book Management, meaning that we share the exact details of our Balance Sheet and P&L Statement with our entire team in real-time, ensuring that our staff has the data they need to treat the business as if it were their own.
Our team members work from home and choose their own hours, allowing them to make time for family, recreation, vacations, or anything that is important to them.
Every team member gets 10 company-wide holidays per year as well as 20 paid time off days intended to be used for vacations. Go have fun. Don’t work all the time.
Our team members also work hard, are constantly learning, and accomplish a ton for the company in the time that they are working.
Our team spends at least 12 days together face-to-face per year at four quarterly meetings that are hosted all over the country. We try to do these meetings in cities that are fun to visit. In the last few years, we’ve been to Austin, Orlando, Minneapolis, San Diego, Las Vegas, New York City, and Detroit.
As you might expect from a company that is so open, we also post our salary information right here in the job post. We will pay you $100,000 in your first year, plus a great benefits package, and a $2,500 signing bonus to purchase a new computer.
After your first year with Action Verb, we will update your salary based on the value that you have been able to demonstrate for the company. We continue to update salary levels every year. It is possible to reach a pay level of double the starting salary if you come in and absolutely crush it.
We fully pay for your health insurance (exact plan details depend on your state of residence), and we’ll pick up the tab for 50% of your spouse or family if they wish to also join the healthcare plan. We want your family to be healthy.
We recognize that other companies may offer higher initial salary offers or signing bonuses, but at Action Verb, we know that for our ideal candidate, the exact level of pay is just one criteria by which they choose where to work. Our goal is to offer the greatest work environment possible and pay people well enough to make it possible for them to join the team. Come learn our way of working, take on as many roles as you can, and establish yourself as a valuable asset to us. Then after your first year, we’ll re-evaluate your salary and make sure it’s more than fair, given the value you’ve been able to generate for the company.
We are looking for candidates who bring the following skills to the table:
- Programming experience in several programming languages. We are particularly interested in Ruby, C++, Java, PHP, and Javascript.
- Strong Computer Science background and understanding of algorithms and data structures.
- Solid web development skills in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Even though we have lots of backend work to keep several people busy, our business is so web-facing that we think every engineer should be familiar with web technologies.
- Complete understanding of how to write secure code and an awareness of common web application security vulnerabilities.
- Appreciation for testing and the ability to write specs and unit tests
- History developing and supporting actual applications that have seen production usage with a large userbase.
Most of our best applicants have Computer Science (or similar) degrees from a well-regarded university. Our best applicants also tend to have at least 3-5 years experience in a position with direct responsibility for developing and supporting large production applications.
We believe that everyone in the company should have programming skills. Our customers are primarily engineers, and in order to relate to them and support our products at the highest possible level, we should all be engineers too.
We believe that the best Engineers tend to be polyglots with a wide variety of programming language experience. We don’t hire for specific programming language skills, but rather look for engineers who are fluent in several programming languages. We want our staff to be adaptable and ready to evolve to what’s next.
We believe that allowing and supporting 100% remote work gives us access to great people we wouldn’t otherwise be able to hire. We tend to hire folks who are later in their careers, which means they usually have their family established somewhere. By offering remote work, we can hire the best people, no matter where they’re located.
We believe that the best way we can acquire top talent is by being an amazing place to work. Work from home, travel with the team, and surround yourself with top tier people at Action Verb. Read about everything we’ve done to make working at Action Verb great.
We believe that building great infrastructure and platform products requires a great internal infrastructure. We have Continuous Integration, a full staging environment, and considerable test coverage. We built our own application deployment system. We self-manage our server environment on Amazon Web Services and custom hardware.
We believe in using the right tool for the job. Our core applications are built in Ruby, JavaScript, Java, C++, and PHP. We use Rails, React, Chef, Qt, Jenkins, Github, Honeybadger, CircleCI, Maven, AWS, MySQL, Redis, Memcached, Haml, Sass, and many other exciting open source systems. We don’t want to get stuck in the trap of using a language or a tool just because “that’s how it’s done around here.”
We believe that engineers should support what they build. We expect our teammates to take responsibilty for the engineering decisions they make. If there are performance problems in production, nobody should have to chase anyone down. All engineers participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation and all engineers speak to customers.
We believe in building products that we actually use ourselves. We are our own toughest critics and we put all of our products through their paces every day.
Tell us about what you believe. We only read cover letters in our first screening round, so make sure yours counts. In your cover letter, we’d like you to address the following topics:
- Why does this opportunity specifically appeal to you?
- How well do you align with Our Core Beliefs? Is there anything you would add or change?
- Why would working remotely for Action Verb change your life for the better?
- Are you familiar with Holacracy? Any questions or concerns?
- What’s lacking in your current work arrangement that we could improve?
- What are your philosophies on software development?
- What does writing great software look like?

Apartment Therapy

Get things done. Sleep soundly. Reach millions.
Have you experienced these symptoms?
- Do you feel stuck in your current position with no advancement and no learning opportunities?
- Are the managers out of touch or, worse, incompetent?
- Do you find it difficult to get things done?
- Is the code you have to work on low-quality with outdated dependencies?
- Did it used to be awesome, but now all the good people have left?
- Do your coworkers spend more time selecting snacks than selecting variable names?
You are not alone.
That list of complaints didn't just appear from nowhere. Those are the most common complaints of mid- to senior-level programmers. The fact of the matter is that those are common problems for a reason — they are really hard to solve. (Even harder than reversing a binary tree on a blackboard with chalk.)
They are also problems Apartment Therapy Media doesn't have.
Reports from a private #slack channel
Here’s what people who actually work on this team have to say about working here:
'smart, action-oriented people; everyone always willing to jump in to help; flat team culture'
'working from home is obviously great'
'I feel like our priorities stay pretty solid once they’re defined and on the roadmap; I’ve definitely worked places where they shift so much nobody ever knows what’s going on - definitely a bad thing about other places'
'diverse team is really cool too - everyone comes from a very interesting background'
'coming into this team I was used to using what was easy. seems like the whole team here jumps on board with what makes the most and best sense.'
'we’ve also hired people who have a 'bias for action.' Like get your hands dirty from day 1 and shine.'
Imagine for a moment, it’s easy if you try...
You wake up in the morning.
Your commute is 45 seconds.
You wear what you like.
You pick up a coffee on the way and it's just the way you like it (from your own kitchen).
You settle into your desk that has awesome natural light (or is a lightless cave, whichever you prefer).
You hop on #slack and say what you're going to get done (meaning today), your coworkers .
Your code written yesterday has been reviewed . You merge into master and the code is automagically tested and pushed to production. Review some of the code your coworkers wrote, asking questions and making suggestions.
You move on to Asana. Mark the task related to the code you just pushed as 'Done' and pick up the next task with your name on it. You get started coding on this next task with no surprises.
You might find yourself bouncing ideas off your coworkers about the best way to modularize a piece of functionality you're working on and the benefits of including vs. delegating.
If it's a Monday or Friday there might be a meeting on Google Hangouts or Zoom (the meetings on Fridays often include the discussion of and consumption of adult beverages).
You stop working about 8 hours after you started, go on with your life, and sleep soundly while the application keeps humming and serving 10s of millions of uniques a month.
Sound too good to be true?
Let's run down the numbers. In the last 12 months, one person has left the team (for a really awesome job at a company you’ve heard of). Zero people have been terminated from the team. The current team has 3 Front End Engineers (Maine, South Carolina, Missouri) and 3 Back End Engineers (California, Utah, New Mexico), 2 Designers (New York and Missouri), and 2 Product Managers (Pennsylvania and Wyoming).
And if you do run into a problem that the team can't solve, email the CEO, call the CFO, or DM the whole editorial staff on #slack. I can guarantee they would all love to hear from anybody on the team.
Punch above your weight class.
How do you serve those 10s of millions of uniques a month with only 6 full-time engineers? Very carefully. No heros. Doing what you know to be best (not easiest).
Then push what you know. Ask questions. Try things. Own everything.
Do you want to win shouting arguments? Or do you want to have great coworkers, a stable application, and go home on time?
Even if you aren't a great fit and you don't apply, I want to personally assure you that these things are possible … and we're profitable to boot.
The opening
This is a growth opening, meaning a new position that didn't exist before. We expect the person to grow as a professional while in the position.
Our new hires set up their dev environments and ship the first day (sometimes the next morning).
Our primary codebases are Rails 4.2, testing is going on to upgrade to Rails 5, with 77% test coverage. We have a constellation of smaller standalone services with various test coverages and a couple of additional languages (Go and Clojure). We’ve recently acquired a few additional code bases, and the first order of business for this position will be bringing these code bases “into the fold.'
If you’ve gotten this far, you might have noticed there’s been no mention of the level of experience we are looking for. This position could go a few different ways: We have a realistic budget for this position when compared against the national average provided by payscale.com (especially given the location independence). We’ve decided not to limit ourselves to a particular level of applicant (junior, senior, et al) until we actually see applicants. Therefore, if you think our culture sounds like a good fit for you, apply regardless of your current level.
This position reports to the Lead Backend Engineer. That said, we have a very flat organizational structure. Our shared organizational goals are defined in OKRs and you will need to take some ownership over how things get done and work with other people inside and outside our team on specific projects. The Lead’s job is mostly to get blockers out of your way and help you improve professionally.
A small amount of travel is required. We get together in NYC twice a year and go to a conference once a year.
The usual host of benefits
Medical Benefits:
We offer several different medical insurance plans to each of our employees so that they can elect the best fit for them and their families. The company will pay for 50% of the single election of each plan. If you are located in a state that does not accept our main coverage then we are able to offer insurance through a provider who is commonly used in that state. This benefit is eligible to all employees on their 31st day of employment.
Dental/Vision Benefits:
We currently offer a combined Dental/Vision plan that employees are eligible to purchase on the 1st of the month after 30 days of employment. This plan is through United Healthcare.
Ancillary Benefits:
The company provides Life Insurance for all employees 1x their annual salary up to $50,000. Employees are able to purchase additional Life Insurance if they would like.
401k/Profit Sharing Plan:
After 1 year of service all employees are eligible to sign up for the company 401k plan through Vanguard. At the end of the year the company will decide if they'd like to do a Profit Share (based on company's performance that year) and if we decide to do the Profit Share then we put 3% of the employee's total compensation into their 401k once they are eligible for the plan.
Paid Time Off:
Employees start with 17 paid days off per year in addition to company holidays.
We also have some fun corporate wellness initiatives.
A few more words on logistics
We are doing blind hiring for this position up until the final round where the applicant meets the whole team on zoom. If you’re selected for the technical interview you will be provided with anonymized github and slack access to work on a small project in the same manner we work every day.

"smart, action-oriented people; everyone always willing to jump in to help; flat team culture"
"working from home is obviously great"
"I feel like our priorities stay pretty solid once they’re defined and on the roadmap; I’ve definitely worked places where they shift so much nobody ever knows what’s going on - definitely a bad thing about other places"
"diverse team is really cool too - everyone comes from a very interesting background"
"coming into this team I was used to using what was easy. seems like the whole team here jumps on board with what makes the most and best sense."
"we’ve also hired people who have a 'bias for action.' Like get your hands dirty from day 1 and shine."
Mark the task related to the code you just pushed as "Done" and pick up the next task with your name on it.
We’ve recently acquired a few additional code bases, and the first order of business for this position will be bringing these code bases “into the fold."

DESCRIPTION
About Veeqo
Veeqo is an award winning high growth tech startup company which has customers around the world and an ambition to become the best software platform for online retailers to manage their business. It helps online retailers sync their stock between their website, retail stores and marketplaces like eBay and Amazon.
Veeqo is growing at an astonishing 300% per year and is expanding globally. Joining Veeqo is a unique opportunity to get involved in a world class start up. Our company is based in London and Swansea and is expanding internationally rapidly ( US, Germany …)
Our position
We need a mid-level Ruby backend developer. In our team, you will grow your skills faster than in any other team; you will learn from the best senior engineers. You will get your code right into production very quickly and see real impact — a task in our team is not complete until a problem of a user is solved in reality.
Job location
We have offices in London, Swansea and shortly Cardiff but some of our team prefer to work remote, which we fully support.
After working with us for some time you will:
- Know Ruby better than the average Ruby programmer. You will know what implicit context is, the difference between ‘self’ and ‘default definee’ and when exactly these two don’t match. Soon you will know which race conditions are possible despite GIL and what "metaclass of eigenclass is eigenclass of metaclass" really means.
- Contribute to open-source projects and develop your Github account.
- Be able to work in a distributed team and become a geographically independent programmer.
- Juggle git objects with ease and consider even interactive rebases as a daily routine.
- Know how to monitor production servers and identify real-life problems.
In short, after 2-3 years of working with us you will be much more valuable on the labour market. We specialise in fast growth of junior and middle developers. But don’t forget that greater reward comes with greater risk:
----
REQUIREMENTS
Who are you ?
- You're very enthusiastic about programming and have a passion to learn more
- Ambition and eagerness to learn and improve
- You want to build a career in a global company
- You thrive in a fast-growing, always-changing environment
- You want to be challenged every day
Technical prerequisites for this job
- Be confident in the Ruby language, some metaprogramming is required
- Know how to use RSpec, have a habit of test-driven development
- Have enough knowledge of Ruby on Rails framework, be able to write a simple CRUD app without googling
- Know basic git operations
Our backend technology stack
- Ruby as an imperative language
- Elixir as a functional language
- Rails and Phoenix as web frameworks
- Postgres as a relational database
- Redis and Memcache as key-value storages
- RabbitMQ and Redis as message queueing solutions
What do we (as a development team) practice:
- TDD (obviously)
- Continuous integration
- Continuous delivery
- Infrastructure as code
- Well-defined planning process
- Regular team retrospectives
----
BENEFITS
- Annual budget for going to conferences or training in Europe
- Spotify Premium, Private GP and Gym Membership
- Share option
- Be part of a fast growth start-up and make a difference
- We are a relatively small team, your contribution will be significant
- Our workflow and practices are based on shared culture rather than on red tape
- Learn more in a few years at Veeqo than you will in any other job
- Work in a friendly, cross-functional team, with people who aim to be the best and love to tackle problems
- Relaxed and flexible work environment with free hot and cold drinks, Spotify Premium, private GP and gym membership
- Remote first - we believe in quality of work, not sitting in an office for 8 hours
- Explicitly allocated time every week to learn new technologies and hack
- “The No Asshole” rule is applied

Job location
We have offices in London, Swansea and shortly Cardiff but some of our team prefer to work remote, which we fully support.

We are still a relatively small team, so your contribution will be significant.
Our backend technology stack
Backend is separated from frontend and plays a role of RESTful JSON API. We communicate with dozens of 3rd party APIs and our own separate services. A lot of asynchronicity is involved, with the vast majority of work being done in background queue processors. We use: - Ruby as an imperative language

- Being able to maintain open-source project is preferred
Technical skills required for this job
- Ruby at a very high level of knowledge. Metaprogramming skill is strictly required.
- Backend parts of Ruby on Rails
- SQL, particularly Postgres
Who are you ?
- You're a person who writes clean code that not only works, but is also maintainable and easy to change
- You’re self-organized
- You want to make the best UI for great experience of our customers
- You have a patience and strong will to invigorate teammates

About VividCortex
VividCortex is a modern database monitoring platform that gives developers and DBAs deep visibility into the database. Our solution is delivered as software-as-a-service and helps our customers see and analyze the work their databases are doing in great detail. It addresses critical pain points in measuring and managing today's large, distributed, diverse storage tiers composed of multiple different clustered products, all working together.
We have a fast-growing customer base of well-known companies, and a tremendous reputation in our market for delivering a high-quality, innovative solution for database performance problems that are common in tens of thousands of small and large organizations.
About The Role
VividCortex is looking for experienced software engineers with deep knowledge and interest in PostgreSQL to help us build and improve the platform that ingests, secures, and analyzes the massive amounts of performance and other data we measure from our customers' database servers. Our platform is written in Go and hosted on the AWS cloud. It uses Kafka, Redis, and MySQL for data storage and analysis. We are a DevOps organization building a 12-factor microservices application; we practice small, fast cycles of rapid improvement and full exposure to the entire infrastructure, but we don't take anything to extremes.
The position offers excellent benefits, a competitive base salary, an opportunity for equity, and a path to promotion. Diversity is important to us, and we welcome and encourage applicants from all walks of life and all backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Discover, define, document, and design selected portions of our infrastructure, whether that's public APIs, internal services, background worker tasks, statistical computations, or the like.
- Write code, tests, and deployment manifests and artifacts, using CircleCI, Git and GitHub, pull requests, issues, etc. Collaborate with peers on code review and approval.
- Engage with our product development and sales teams, as well as external stakeholders to advocate for our PostgreSQL product offering.
- Deploy, observe, and operate the systems you build. Use ChatOps, VividCortex, Ansible, the Unix command line, and other tools to do this.
- Measure and improve the code and system as it runs in production.
- Help provide customer support. Help other departments, such as Sales, as needed.
- Rotate through on-call duty.
- Continually seek to understand and improve our security posture and practices; security is part of everyone's job here.
- Continually seek to understand and improve performance, reliability, resilience, scalability, and automation. Our goal is that systems should scale linearly with our customer growth, and the effort of maintaining the systems should scale sub-linearly.
- Contribute to a culture of blameless learning, responsibility, and accountability.
- Collaborate as needed; work independently when needed. You must be self-managing. You must be present and online during your team's normal working hours, and attend and participate in team calls and the like.
Ideal Qualifications
- Successful candidates are collaborative, self-managing, and experienced in general development, deployment, and operation of modern API-powered web applications using continuous delivery and Git in a Unix/Linux environment.
- SaaS multitenant experience is a bonus.
- Experience with enterprise security is a plus.
- You know PostgreSQL pretty well, and will advocate for it
- Experience with Go and MySQL is very beneficial.
- Bash scripting experience is desirable.
- A 4-year degree from an accredited university.
- A driver's license.
At VividCortex, we want to build a diverse team because it's the right thing to do, and because we believe diversity is strength. We encourage applicants from all walks of life and all backgrounds.

Tidtilforsikring
dev3>c3>c plus plus3>php3> | dev3>c3>c plus plus3>php3> | | 6mo | |
Do you thrive on high-quality code? Hi! We are TidTilForsikring (TimeForInsurance); a Danish startup looking to change the way, people look at insurances. Most people think it's quite a boring (and complex) subject, and a lot of people actually end up having the wrong insurance coverage.
Our goal is to change this. We have developed our first prototype, but now we're looking for more ressources to finish up the product for release.
We want to achieve this goal, by building a tool which uses 'questions' to analyse the situation, that our users are in, and using their answers to generate an insurance package that'll fit perfectly into their lives.
The first prototype has already been built, and is working really well. But to take the prototype to the next level and getting ready for release, we need an extra pair of hands.
TTF was founded in november 2015, and we've spent the past year analyzing the Danish insurance market, to ensure we have the data needed, to build our tool.
About us We are a currently a small team all located in Denmark.
Jens Christian is the CEO of the company. He's been working for a number of large Danish insurance companies for the past many years and he's the main driving force behind TTF. He's the one analyzing the insurance policies and terms to make sure we have the correct data grounds, while he's also getting our contracts with the insurance companies.
Lasse is our online marketing specialist, and he's previously worked as an OM consultant at one of the largest Danish web bureaus. He's also been an integral part of the business development part, and is in charge of both marketing and on-site optimization.
Lars is the technical lead. He manages the development team consisting of two freelancers, while also participating in the actual development and architecture of the platform.
Other than the three people mentioned above, we have another investor who also has extensive knowledge of the insurance market in Denmark, and acts as an advisor as well as an investor.
What are we looking for? We are looking for a full-time remote backend developer who takes pride in high-quality, maintainable and pretty code.
Your main tasks will be to further develop the algorithms used to generate the insurance and coverage suggestions.
You will be a part of the team consisting of Lars and two freelance programmers (a frontender and a backender).
The skill-set of the ideal candidate The requirements for this position are:
- PHP (or C#), ninja-level
- Experience working SOLID
- REST-experience
- Git-experience
As a bonus, but not a requirement, it would be a plus if you to have some experience with:
To apply: To apply for the job, you will need to complete a simple assignment and attach it along with your application. The assignment can be found here: http://tidtilforsikring.dk/jobs/assignment.pdf , and should be doable within a reasonable timeframe. If you have any questions about the position, feel free to contact Lars, on lars@tidtilforsikring.dk. The assignment (or link to GitHub/BitBucket) and your application should be sent to lars@tidtilforsikring.dk. Please note that any applications that does not contain a finished assignment, will not be taken into consideration. |

We take critical feedback and push through to get the job done. Rigor: Data driven, analytical and exhaustive in decision making. We take in the evidence, integrate information from multiple sources quickly, draw conclusions and take actions - quickly. Collaboration: We leave our egos at home, we challenge each other and we work together to find the best solutions, every day, day in and day out. Ownership: We sign up for the hard stuff and take extreme ownership to see it through. We make lemonade out of lemons when we have to and don’t let attitude get in the way of getting it done. Curiosity: Most of us dork out over non-work related topics at a ridiculous level of detail, because that’s how we’re wired. We’re naturally inquisitive, ask tough questions and aren’t afraid to ruffle feathers to find better answers. Honesty: We’re transparent and honest because that’s the right way to treat other people. Integrity is the basis of trust, and trust is everything when you’re creating the future together. Responsibilities
- Take ownership over mission critical backend functionality that is consumed by our mobile, web and internal applications
- Produce maintainable, functional, high reliability and performant code
- Build reusable code and libraries for future use

Healthify | Backend Engineer
Healthify
dev3>engineer3>backend3>digital nomad3> | dev3>engineer3>backend3>digital nomad3> | | 1yr | |
DESCRIPTION
About Us
After experiencing the challenge of identifying and connecting people in need with the right social services firsthand, the founding team quickly saw an opportunity to create technology that would address these needs systematically. In 2013, Healthify was founded on a resounding belief that there's more to health than health care and today, it's a leading software provider to health plans, hospitals, and provider networks working in low-income communities. Their platform empowers care teams to make quick and accurate decisions, putting community referrals just a click away.
Healthify HQ is located in Manhattan’s iconic Financial District, but we’re far from the typical Wall Street stereotype. We serve a diverse, nationwide population and naturally value building a diverse team. We’re an inclusive space for all identities committed to keeping that foundation intact as we grow. We believe in high standards beginning at the interview process and continuing as a valued member of the team. We expect the best from each other, give each other the benefit of the doubt, and encourage each other to take initiative to improve ourselves and the company.
Many members of our team are full or part time remote. We embrace the flexibility and decentralization of a remote-first work environment.
The Role & You
Healthify is looking for an exceptional backend engineer to join our growing engineering team. You will work across all product lines building impactful services for patient populations with social service needs. Our backend engineers spend their time discussing, testing, developing and deploying features for our products. Some of the problems that we tackle include building intuitive experiences for traditionally low-tech user groups, designing systems to ensure that our social service database is always relevant, and integrating with our healthcare IT systems.
All members of our engineering organization take ownership over the initiatives and product lines they are responsible for. While this often means working with code, it also might involve educating other developers on new technologies, ensuring that a initiative is tracking well to a deadline, or talking to users about how they might interact with our products.
Our engineering team values efficient, maintainable, tested and pragmatic code, processes and tools. While our primary goal is to fundamentally change how the social needs of individuals are identified and addressed, we are also in the unique position of having significant exposure to the enterprise healthcare IT industry. With this exposure, we hope to continue to modernize the delivery of software products within a traditionally high-process and high-inertia industry.
----
REQUIREMENTS
The Necessities
- 3+ years of professional experience working on an MVC web application (we use Rails).
- 5+ years of experience working as a software developer.
- Demonstrated history of writing maintainable (tested, self-documenting) code.
- A low ego and inquisitive mind.
- Ability to thrive in a relatively unstructured environment - you are never afraid to ask questions when needed.
The Extras
Experience with:
- Migrating to and/or operating within a service oriented architecture
- Developing products within regulated industries (healthcare, fintech, etc)
- Deploying sophisticated search services (Elasticsearch, full-text PostgreSQL, etc.)
- Developing in JS and with JS frameworks (React, Angular, etc.)
- Profiling and tuning web applications with the aid of New Relic or related services
- Leveraging browser APIs (modern DOM, local storage, and so on), HTTP libraries, etc.
- Writing accessible, semantic, and performant client side code
----
BENEFITS
- Internal Impact – we’re a small team and you will help decide our culture and product.
- External Impact – we're changing the social service system.
- Self-Managed Vacation – we’re a results oriented work environment, take time off when you need it.
- Top Gear – we'll deck you out with a great laptop and monitor!
- Covered Transportation Costs – we’ll cover your monthly unlimited subway pass for NYC-based employees.
- Free Caffeine and Snacks – Coffee, tea, and snacks are available regularly in our WeWork office.
- Health Insurance – Medical, Dental, Vision; We want you healthy.

Gravitational, an early stage systems & cloud startup in San Francisco, is looking for ambitious and talented people. We are well-funded by fantastic Silicon Valley investors. We are an experienced team: we founded Mailgun which was acquired by Rackspace, we created Vulcand and some other cool stuff at Rackspace.
We are hackers. We love Linux and low level systems programming and we love helping open source communities and other engineers to get things done.
We are also husbands, fathers and we have hobbies. Our past experiences building companies taught us about the importance of life and work balance. It matters even more when you are building a huge and lasting company, like Gravitational.
If this resonates, we want to talk to you.
About you
You understand how computers work and what role an operating system plays. You know why the Linux kernel is written in C and not any other language. You have a favorite file system, you know what a syscall is and you are comfortable exploring /proc and /sys. You like using Go every day, are not afraid of Makefiles and you enjoy when thousands of servers bend to your will.
You should also be comfortable joining an early stage company with a dynamic future. We offer a great salary, but expect you to value the equity as well. In return we will be very transparent with you about the company finances and outlook. You are joining a founding team and we want you to enjoy the ride.
If you are this kind of person, here is what you will be working on:

Mixmax | Backend Engineer
Mixmax
dev3>engineer3>backend3>digital nomad3> | dev3>engineer3>backend3>digital nomad3> | | 1yr | |
At Mixmax, our mission is building the impossible: a next-gen communications platform to make professional communications as rich, interactive, and developer-friendly as the web. We’re looking for talented full-stack engineers to join us in this mission.
We’re a distributed & international team, so if you’re looking to work with us remotely, we encourage you to apply!
What will I be working on?
Imagine you’re laying tracks as the train is barreling down towards you: fully loaded and going 200mph. What do you do: Stop and plan your next 25 miles of track? Or hastily throw some iron on the ground now? Or something in between?
As a backend engineer, you’ll make decisions that span this reaches of this spectrum every day. You’ll balance time, features, and quality to get the right solution out right now. This might include patching our email sending service to deal with a temporary SMTP failure code, or it might mean designing the communications architecture that will replace email. We’ll leave it largely up to you to evolve the stack as you see fit. We eagerly participate in open source development and will encourage you to do the same.
What you might work on:
- Design, write and deliver software to improve the availability, scalability, latency, and efficiency of our microservices.
- Scale our backend service to send many millions of messages a day
- Maintain an elastic distributed infrastructure built on top of AWS
- Solve problems relating to mission-critical services and build automation to prevent problem recurrence, with the goal of automating response to all non-exceptional service conditions
- Build large scale data processing pipelines for indexing content
- Continuously find opportunities to refactor, improve performance, and increase reliability & quality
- Core technologies: ES6, Backbone, NodeJS, Jasmine, Express, Mongo, Redis, Meteor, Electron, Meteor Galaxy, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, S3, Cloudwatch.
What are you looking for in a team member?
Your specialization is less important than your ability to learn fast and adapt to shifting technologies. We’re especially fond of people who:
- Focus on project goals, not just writing code.
- Iterate until customers love what you’ve built, and pay for it.
- Have a hacker mindset and master the fine art of balancing time, features, and quality of code. You know when to unit test and when to “just ship it”.
- Strive to grow personally and professionally, beyond just expanding technical abilities.
- Love to experiment with new technology and share knowledge with the team.
- Represent the team and product at conferences.
If you are a member of an under-represented group in technology, we strongly encourage you to apply.
What’s it like to work at Mixmax?
Mixmax is not your typical “work hard / play hard” start-up. We are responsible adults who value personal and professional growth equally. We take care of ourselves, our families, our customers and one another. We believe in sustainable and diverse approaches to work and life, because optimizing for the long-term is the best path to success. As a team, we built multi-million dollar products with this balance in mind.
As a founding team member, you’ll wear multiple hats, embrace ambiguity, and take charge leading complex projects. You’ll have the support of an experienced team who’ve built multi-million dollar products and services. This is exceptionally challenging work, but will be the most meaningful and rewarding of your career
Our office is in San Francisco near Caltrain. We offer competitive salaries, meaningful equity, and generous health, dental, vision, and fitness reimbursement benefits.

Get things done. Sleep Soundly. Reach Millions.
Have you experienced these symptoms? - Do you feel stuck in your current position with no advancement and no learning opportunities?
- Are the managers out of touch or, worse, incompetent?
- Do you find it difficult to get things done?
- Is the code you have to work on low quality with outdated dependencies?
- Did it used to be awesome, but now all the good people have left?
- Do your co-workers spend more time selecting snacks than selecting variable names?
You are not alone That list of complaints didn't just appear from nowhere. Those are the most common complaints of mid to senior-level programmers. The fact of the matter is that those are common problems for a reason. They are really hard to solve. Even harder than reversing a binary tree on a blackboard with chalk.
They are also problems Apartment Therapy Media doesn't have.
Reports from a private #slack channel Here’s what people who actually work on this team have to say about working here:
- "smart, action-oriented people; everyone always willing to jump in to help; flat team culture"
- "working from home is obviously great"
- "I feel like our priorities stay pretty solid once they’re defined and on the roadmap; I’ve definitely worked places where they shift so much nobody ever knows what’s going on - definitely a bad thing about other places"
- "diverse team is really cool too - everyone comes from a very interesting background"
- "coming into this team I was used to using what was easy. seems like the whole team here jumps on board with what makes the most and best sense."
- "we’ve also hired people who have a “bias for action.” Like get your hands dirty from day 1 and shine."
You hop on #slack and say what you're going to get done(meaning today), your coworkers Your code written yesterday has been reviewed
You push that to production. Review some of the code your co-workers wrote, asking questions, and making suggestions.
You move on to the Trello board. Move the card related to the code you just pushed in to "Done" and pick up the next card with your face on it. You get started coding on this next task with no surprises.
You might find yourself answering questions of a junior developer or bouncing ideas off your co-workers about the best way to modularize a piece of functionality you're working on and the benefits of including vs. delegating.
If it's a Monday or Friday there might be a meeting on Google Hangouts (the meetings on Fridays often include the discussion of and consumption of adult beverages).
You stop working about 8 hours after you started, go on with your life, and sleep soundly while the application keeps humming and serving 10s of Millions of uniques a month.
Sound too good to be true? Let's run down the numbers. In the last 12 months, two people have left our team, both of them going off to found or co-found bootstrapped, profitable businesses. Zero people have been terminated from the team. The team currently has 2 Lead Engineers (rural Illinois and SF), 2 Senior Engineers (Portland, Maine and Kansas City), 2 Junior Engineers (Salt Lake City and South Carolina), 2 Designers (Missouri and New York City), and a Product Manager (in Philly).
And if you do run into a problem that the team can't solve: Email the CEO, call the CFO, DM the whole editorial staff on #slack. I can guarantee they would all love to hear from anybody on the team.
Punch above your weight class How do you serve those Tens of Millions of uniques a month with only 6 full time engineers? Very carefully. No Heros. Doing what you know to be best (not easiest).
Then push what you know. Ask questions. Try things. Own everything.
Do you want to win shouting arguments? Or do you want to have great co-workers, a stable application, and go home on time?
Even if you aren't a great fit and you don't apply: I want to personally assure you that these things are possible...and we're profitable to boot.
The opening This is a growth opening, meaning a new position that didn't exist before. We expect the person to grow as a Professional while in the position.
What we need is someone who can jump into a few Rails 4 codebases with about a 77.7% code coverage and be effective right away. Our new hires set up their dev environments and ship the first day (sometimes the next morning).

About us
Hey there. I'm one of the lead engineers here at Plastc, an exciting payment services startup based out of SF.
If you'd like to see more about our company and product, you can visit our website here; https://plastc.com
What we need
We're currently looking for strong Python engineers, ideally with a DevOps background, to help us with building out our backend APIs and infrastructure.
Ideally we'd like you to start immediately, remote working is fine, although you're welcome to join us in our SF office if you're local!
Our platform
Our platform consists of highly decoupled microservices, written mostly in Python with Bottle and Peewee ORM. As part of our open source pledge, we are releasing much of our non business logic code to the public (such as authentication services). Every single repo has 100% unit test coverage, and at least 95% acceptance test coverage. There are also a set of post release smoke tests.
We are very "remote working" friendly, everyone in the company uses Slack and all communication is streamlined. You will be working with almost every member of the team, including technical lead (myself), technical project manager, mobile app developers, hardware engineers and CEO/board level staff. Projects are tracked in JIRA using agile methodologies.
Our problems
- Building core business functionality in Python
- Zero downtime database migrations with Postgres
- Internal microservice communication (e.g. thrift vs protobuf vs REST etc)
- JSON schema design
- Release workflow automation with AWS
- Blockscore integration
- Research into solutions such as Rancher OS, Cloud 66 etc
- Improving our smoke tests
- Integration with Mastercard MDES
- Events and metrics collection
- High availability infrastructure
Our technologies
- Bottle, Peewee ORM, PyTest and Python 3.4
- Postgres, RethinkDB, Amazon RedShift, Twilio
- Docker, Vagrant and AWS
- Ideal candidate
- Experience with microservices, multilayered architecture and seperation of concern
- Keen interest in security (reverse engineering etc)
- Experience with DevOps toolchains, such as New Relic, Sentry etc
- Strong experience with Python and Linux
