Knowledge or even expertise in Solr is desired. However, as our data needs grow we look beyond search and towards Big Data solutions. We are seeking someone who can join the team and help us solve all kinds of data processing and analysis problems.{linebreak}{linebreak}Currently at Help Scout{linebreak}* We develop in Java, Kotlin, JavaScript and PHP{linebreak}* We leverage AWS, RabbitMQ, Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Apache Solr{linebreak}* We also use Slack, Jira, Trello, Github, Jenkins{linebreak}{linebreak}# Responsibilities{linebreak} * You will be the fourth member of our search and data services team, collaborating on the next generation of our large-scale search and reporting service and associated infrastructure. On a daily basis, you'll work on adding new functionality, improving existing code, and API endpoints while maintaining focus on testing and documentation.{linebreak}* We currently index millions of search and report events every day and at peak hours our API handles tens of thousands of transactions a minute. You will play a key role in evolving our services to handle 10X that.{linebreak}* You will own some of our large, upcoming challenges and collaborate with your team on all of these: building a streaming data reports pipeline, reworking how we index data and retrieve data to scale while controlling infrastructure costs, and significantly improving our search relevancy and customer-facing reporting capabilities. {linebreak}* Our engineering team is over 40 people, more than half the company. As part of the search and data team you will be involved in the decisions made regarding implementation, testing, and backlog prioritization. You will collaborate with the rest of the engineering team through code, reviews. You will participate in making architectural discussion.{linebreak}* We work in using iterative software approach, communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with tests and tag your team for review - using video and screen-sharing as needed. Your development builds can be easily tested on environments that closely match production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.{linebreak}* Your team performs engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team and passes triage. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers and improve the product along the way.{linebreak}* Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact the experience in terms of performance, security and usability.{linebreak}* You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers. You'll deploy work that moves the needle for businesses around the world.{linebreak}* To ensure sufficient overlap with your teammates, we're looking for candidates that live in UTC+3 (Eastern Europe) and UTC-7 (as far as San Francisco) time zones. {linebreak}{linebreak}# Requirements{linebreak}* You became an engineer because you like writing software that helps people.{linebreak}* You bring a level of Java-specific expertise that will help us craft an outstanding experience for customers and fellow developers. {linebreak}* You have experience building information systems and data processing platforms. {linebreak}* You are skilled in the modern tooling that is used in data processing and retrieval domain. We also like Kotlin here.{linebreak}* You are a skilled and passionate engineer who is friendly, collaborative, and supportive.{linebreak}* You value personal growth and constructive feedback. {linebreak}* You demonstrate an empathetic, organized and collaborative communication style with fellow engineers and non-engineering stakeholders. {linebreak}* You will consider how your work impacts others, and demonstrate thoughtful, flexible approaches to mentoring and guiding technical decisions.{linebreak}* Your code is not only a pleasure for customers to use, but for other engineers to read and understand easily. {linebreak}{linebreak}#Location{linebreak}- Worldwide

At Reify Health, we are building a more creative healthcare system. We envision a world where every potential therapy, if safe and effective, is available to the patients who can benefit.{linebreak}{linebreak}Our healthcare system relies on clinical trials to develop new, potentially life-saving treatments for patients. But clinical trials continue to be slow, unpredictable, and expensive. Reify Health’s product helps both the research leaders driving forward clinical trials and the doctors and nurses who care for the patient participants. **We Are:**{linebreak}{linebreak}MageMojo Magento hosting, a group of 35 talented devops guys who all work remotely. We believe passionate, talented people all working together smoothly yields awesome work that lets us build a solid infra and processes to prevent fires instead of spending time always putting out fires. We get along and we constantly improve only because we don't bullsh!t each other or our clients, we don't hide or say what we think others want to hear. We do this with respect and we value truth, transparency and honesty above all else. Of course there are times when we are in headphones-on, hyper-concentration mode. But we also draw a lot of support from each other and try to focus on the "human side" of support. We are curious students of the internet age who are interested in continuing to enhance our own work, sharing what we've learned, and learning from those around us. {linebreak}{linebreak}**You Are:**{linebreak}{linebreak}A solid human being with a good sense of humor in search of a job with a crew that is big enough to host important, meaningful sites and small enough to have fun doing it. You know there's nothing you can't do and no problem you can't solve with the help of the Interwebz, and Google of course. You have strong opinions about the way things should be done but aren't necessarily a zealot for any one process, technology, or denomination. You're inclined to express yourself through animated gifs and obscure movie quotes from the youtubes. You work well at the 11th hour, but even better at the first and second so we can be out at end of shift. You have an ear to the ground for new tech, whether it comes from hacker news or a programming subreddit, and a desire to dive in and try things out. {linebreak}{linebreak}**How To Apply:**{linebreak}{linebreak}Submit your resume and a few words about yourself, your achievements, what you love most in life, and what you want out of your career. We're not interested in standard issue cover letter babble and HR bubble wrap. Talk to us like a human being who values directness and using your own words. If you need to use a four-letter word to effectively express a previous engagement or an appropriately inappropriate metaphor to describe your ideal work environment, we'll take that over what you would think we typically "need to hear" in a job application. Do you think it's cool to jailbreak iPhones, control them via Python and SSH, download apps, extract headers and compare them to a dictionary of 10,000 SDK fingerprints, and parse and push to a Redshift store with over a billion records?{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Well cool. That's just the start. {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}MightySignal is venture-backed and sells $25K+/yr contracts to serve SDK installation data to sales and marketing teams in the mobile app development market. We're a very healthy business with some amazing technology. Revenue has doubled in the past year and customer upgrades are currently offsetting cancellations (aka "negative churn" -- most companies never see this). {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}We work in and around San Francisco. Our hardware lab is in Las Vegas and that's where we'll do quarterly meetups. You can be anywhere. {linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}Our job is to keep this business highly profitable without disrupting the growth trajectory. Sound fun?{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}# Responsibilities{linebreak} Maintain a complex suite of microservices, datastores, and web architecture. {linebreak}{linebreak}Manage other remote engineering teammates as they consolidate services or run other projects.{linebreak}{linebreak}Continue to find ways to streamline and cut costs as needed.{linebreak}{linebreak}Maybe even fit in some R&D. {linebreak}{linebreak}# Requirements{linebreak}Be good about managing email and other communication. {linebreak}{linebreak}Standard full-stack knowledge. Rails and AWS (S3, EC2, Redshift, SQS) are most important, followed by Python and iOS/Android architecture.{linebreak}{linebreak}Can be part-time or full-time. We're flexible for the right people.

Mission {linebreak}{linebreak}To reinforce our technical prowess, we are looking to grow our operations team. If you’re looking for an exciting, high-growth opportunity with an award-winning, cutting-edge company, this could be just the job for you{linebreak}{linebreak}For its PaaS solution https://platform.sh is looking for an Operations and Service Reliability Engineer with a taste for Python and Go, great Linux system understanding, and a real hunger for the challenges of building robust, distributed systems.{linebreak}{linebreak}Platform.sh is a PaaS shrouded in a lot of black magic (we can consistently clone a whole running cluster, with its state, databases, indexes in a matter of seconds). We want to get this down to the hundreds of milliseconds domain. Interested? There is more...{linebreak}{linebreak}Our external API is pure Hypermedia REST + oAuth on top of Pyramid. It mechanizes the Git layer and needs more features.{linebreak}{linebreak}We can consistently generate from the same manifest a Docker container, an LXC one, or VM disk images (AWS, Azure, OpenStack), we want more targets.{linebreak}{linebreak}We probably have the highest industry container density. We need to get it higher.{linebreak}{linebreak}We support any Python, Ruby, NodeJS or PHP, Java and .NET, time to roll-out Elixir, of course, Elixir (and Rust. We need Rust).{linebreak}{linebreak}We need to have more auto-healing on the high-availability clusters. We need more performance out of our multi-protocol ssh proxy. We need work on our Ceph Implementation. We need to get the Debian package generation streamlined and faster. We need… great ideas on how to make Platform.sh even better.{linebreak}{linebreak}{linebreak}About Platform.sh {linebreak}{linebreak}Platform.sh is an idea-to-cloud application platform that simplifies cloud infrastructures.{linebreak}{linebreak}We give developers the tools they need to experiment, innovate, get rapid feedback and deliver better-quality features with speed and confidence thanks to our unique rapid cloning technology.{linebreak}{linebreak}Platform.sh serves thousands of customers worldwide including The Financial Times, Gap, Magento Commerce, Orange, Hachette, Ikea, Stanford University, Harvard University, The British Council, and Lufthansa.{linebreak}{linebreak}We want people who are passionate, open, multicultural, friendly, humble and smart to join us and help this fast-growing, award-winning company to revolutionize the tech industry.{linebreak}{linebreak}# Responsibilities{linebreak} Directly reporting to our VP of Infrastructure and in close interaction with our Engineering and Customer Support teams, you will be responsible for:{linebreak}{linebreak}* cloud operations: configure clusters, deploy stuff, follow-up on alerts, help customer support debug issues.{linebreak}* automating all of the above so they can instead drink margaritas (or non-alcoholic beverages, of course){linebreak}* creating systems, tools & processes that will enhance our support and operations efficiency{linebreak}* improving service quality, discipline and reliability throughout lifecycle{linebreak}* monitoring operating objectives, streamline and automate intervention{linebreak}* continuous learning from Operations experience, modeled as software{linebreak} {linebreak}{linebreak}# Requirements{linebreak}The ideal candidate:{linebreak}{linebreak}has proven successful experience in an operations role,{linebreak}has demonstrated the ability to successfully manage cloud-based infrastructure for a fast growing organization{linebreak}has experience with containerization technologies{linebreak}has had exposure to cloud services (AWS){linebreak}understands how an OS works, knows networking, how git works, and the constraints of a distributed system{linebreak}Puppet experience{linebreak}is proficient in Python (Golang a plus){linebreak}{linebreak}Nice to have :{linebreak}{linebreak}knowledge of Magento Ecommerce, Symfony, Drupal, eZ Platform, or Typo3{linebreak}relational database skills{linebreak}public speaking experience{linebreak}ability to kick ass in Chess{linebreak}proficiency in Rust grants you bonus points{linebreak}Note: We don't like stress, so we build everything to be robust and resiliant, but stuff does break. This is a role with on-call duties. If page-duty fills you with dread... well, this might not be a fit.

We’re less interested in conforming to a specific title, and more interested in a passion for using systems and infrastructure to help build a great product.{linebreak}{linebreak}Regardless of title, the following are core responsibilities:{linebreak}* Manage and improve our AWS infrastructure, implementing best practices, evaluating AWS offerings, and deploying infrastructure resources.{linebreak}* Develop processes to scale and automate our infrastructure using container-based systems.{linebreak}* Monitoring hundreds of instances: database servers, API servers, custom servers... you name it!{linebreak}* Reduce barriers for engineers to deploy and optimize systems.{linebreak}{linebreak}In addition, there’s room to make a major impact in multiple areas:{linebreak}* Help optimize for security, speed, and redundancy across all points of the AWS stack.{linebreak}* Build tools and processes to help us detect and respond to operational issues more quickly.{linebreak}* Increase performance visibility by working on our metrics and logging infrastructure.{linebreak}* Improve and optimize resource monitoring and emergency response handling.{linebreak}{linebreak}We’re not expecting expertise in each category. You’ll be working with a team of full-stack engineers that are willing and able to collaborate and participate in this work. Ultimately we’re looking for someone who has a passion for quickly leveraging and optimizing new technology, implementing best practices, and building world-class systems at scale.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Our stack**{linebreak}* AWS - we’ve drunk the kool-aid and use AWS across the board.{linebreak}* Salt, Sensu, Graylog, Elasticsearch - provisioning, monitoring, and logging{linebreak}* Node.js - APIs and backend development{linebreak}* Kubernetes, Docker, ECS - tentative container exploration{linebreak}* MariaDB, MongoDB, Solr, Redis - data persistence{linebreak}* Github, Jenkins, Ghost Inspector, Mocha - deployment and testing{linebreak}{linebreak}**How we work**{linebreak}* Execute: this isn't a management position. This means you'll be executing your craft and shipping improvements every day.{linebreak}* Contribute: we want our engineers to make an impact on the Knack product. This means you're not just implementing other’s specifications. You’re developing ideas, making suggestions, and keeping on top of new tech to understand opportunities.{linebreak}* Engage: we expect a high level of engagement with decision-making, specifications, and consensus. You'll be expected to propose ideas, defend them, and contribute feedback to others.{linebreak}* Learn and grow: we do code-reviews, pair-programming, lunch-and-learns, and use every opportunity to teach and learn.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Remote**{linebreak}Our work is 100% remote. We use GitHub, Slack, Trello, Google Docs and Google Hangouts to get our work done. As a remote company we optimize around asynchronous communication. We also realize that in-person communication is often going to be the most effective means to get something done.{linebreak}{linebreak}**About You**{linebreak}Above all, you build things. You have a history of starting --and completing-- projects, whether that’s products, applications, games, libraries, or plugins.{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re both a teacher and a learner. You’re not afraid to admit when someone may know more than you. You have the confidence to help others level up.{linebreak}{linebreak}You’re an outstanding communicator. You can document a problem, and clearly and succinctly outline a solution. You’re not afraid to distill things into plain English for teammates and customers.{linebreak}{linebreak}You have experience working in fast-paced environments, prioritizing and balancing multiple projects, and working with cross-functional teams.{linebreak}{linebreak}You want to work on a product you can be proud of that impacts thousands of people all over the world, from non-profits to the world’s biggest companies.{linebreak}{linebreak}You go all in. You want to do your best work, and have that work make an impact.{linebreak}{linebreak}**This isn’t for everyone, but for the right fit this will be the definitive experience of your career. Our goal will be to ensure you are driven and supported to continuously grow and do your best work.**{linebreak}{linebreak}More info: https://knack.com/about{linebreak}Working at Knack: https://knack.com/work-at-knack{linebreak}Apply: https://www.knack.com/devops {linebreak}{linebreak}#Location{linebreak}- US-only

**Area is modernising the user experience of buying and renting a home. We’re a platform for estate agents and their customers that makes it easier and faster to get things done. Area is an early stage, fully-remote and revenue-generating startup (based out of London). The team you’ll work with were the engineering and product VPs at Yoyo Wallet who laid the groundwork for it to become Europe’s fastest growing mobile wallet.**{linebreak}{linebreak}Area’s clients include some of the best-performing estate agents in the UK and over 10,000 customers interact with Area’s software each month (and may not even know it). If the words “estate agent” put you off, they shouldn’t! Our clients love us because we’re industry outsiders and we challenge the status quo. Most of the problems and challenges we're solving are no different than those at other early-stage startups.{linebreak}{linebreak}**The Role:**{linebreak}{linebreak}We are looking for a remote software engineer with experience building commercially-deployed Rails applications to join us as we scale-up our infrastructure, engineering team and product. This is very much a get your hands dirty start-up role rather than a clock in-and-out role. As it’s remote, there is lots of flexibility around your working schedule, but we’re all about getting things done, so you’ll need to pull your weight. With that said, we value working smarter instead of harder and finding balance.{linebreak}{linebreak}**Must Haves:**{linebreak}{linebreak}* Extensive and current understanding of Ruby on Rails{linebreak}* Good track record of working on commercial-deployed projects{linebreak}* Experience building and deploying AWS-based environments{linebreak}* Fluent English speaker (with above-average writing skills){linebreak}* Driven to create structured and well-tested code{linebreak}* Self motivated and able to manage your own workload{linebreak}{linebreak}**Nice To Haves:**{linebreak}{linebreak}* Experience working in partially- or fully-remote teams{linebreak}* Experience with Angular, React or Backbone{linebreak}* Experience with iOS and/or Android development{linebreak}* Interest in or experience in UX, UI and product development{linebreak}{linebreak}**The Benefits:**{linebreak}{linebreak}* Work from wherever you want (fully remote role)\*{linebreak}* Monthly remote working budget (e.g. coworking space rent){linebreak}* Yearly skills development budget (e.g. courses or books){linebreak}* MacbookPro and accessories you need to do your job{linebreak}* £45k - £75k\*\* per year depending on your skill set and experience{linebreak}* Private pension contributions (subject to UK residency){linebreak}* Flexible holiday allowance and personal days as required{linebreak}{linebreak}\* You may need to adjust your working schedule to have a minimum of 2-4 hours overlap with other team members.{linebreak}{linebreak}\*\* Or negotiated equivalent contractor rate if you do not have/are not able to get a UK NI number.{linebreak}{linebreak}**The Process:**{linebreak}{linebreak}1. Please tell us about your experience and why you’re interested.{linebreak}1. Initial call with the CEO to learn more about each other{linebreak}1. Second call with the CTO to learn more about each other{linebreak}1. Short pair-programming session to see how you work in action{linebreak}1. If it's a good fit, we’ll make you an official offer in writing{linebreak}1. If you accept, we’ll meet up in person for on-boarding\*\*\*{linebreak}{linebreak}\*\*\* Either we’ll fly to you, you fly to us or we meet somewhere in between. Of course reasonable travel expenses would be covered. {linebreak}{linebreak}# Requirements{linebreak}Please write to us at [email protected] and ensure you tell us about your experience, linking to anything relevant we should look at and why you would be interested in join us.
