Ad Hoc Labs are the makers of Firewall, Dialed, and Burner, one of the top-grossing independent apps in the world.Β  Our mission is to build best-in-class software products that empower our millions of customers with better control of their privacy, communications, and identity, and to do it as a self-sustaining company whose culture and practices we can be proud of.\n\nOur bestselling appΒ **Burner**Β has been the category leader in virtual phone number apps for more than five years, serving millions of consumers with a way to generate additional phone numbers when needed, keep them indefinitely or use them only temporarily, and delete them when finished – all without the hassle of wireless carriers or contracts. Burner was named a top 50 app by TIME and has been covered extensively in the press, including the New York Times who said β€œa thin layer of privacy between yourself and the rest of the world, when needed, is hard to put a price on”.\n\nAs a Senior Backend Engineer, you will be a key member of our engineering team building the next generation of mobile privacy tools. You will work closely with the mobile and product teams to architect new features and build out fast, scalable backend services.\n\n### **What is the platform team like at Ad Hoc Labs?**\n\nOur platform team is the core of our customer experience. Each day they work on high volume projects that power our mobile applications. The team is tightly knit and works closely on all aspects of architecting, development, and deployment of the platform. They work cross functionally with the mobile and product teams to design new features and services. We believe engineers are highly motivated when they can work autonomously with clear goals and support and continually focus on improvement in our process to create that environment.\n\nOur team members are encouraged to embrace new technologies/frameworks and find the best tool for every problem. We have micro services written in Scala, backed by Postgres and Redis, managed and deployed using Kubernetes. We leverage AWS across the platform, including AWS Lambda and Serverless.\n\nAs a senior member of the team, you will lead cross functional teams to design, develop, and deploy products. You will take an active role in shaping the engineering culture and mentoring other members of the team. Senior platform engineers enjoy a high degree of autonomy and ownership of the services they build.\n\n### **Who we're looking for**\n\nWe are looking for team players who want to grow rapidly in their career. We think these skills and experiences make a good fit for this role. There is no such thing as a perfect fit - we want to hear from you if you believe you have the chops and are excited about what we do.\n\n- At least 5 years of professional software development experience. Any experience with JVM languages is a bonus!\n- A familiarity with or willingness to learn Scala\n- You've been the technical lead designing and developing highly responsive REST APIs, working with technical and non technical stakeholders\n- Solid foundation with relational database design and experience working with Postgres at scale\n- Strong ownership of the full development lifecycle, including designing, development, testing, and deployment.\n- You've worked on a small, highly collaborative team.\n- You want to own and drive engineering culture.\n\n**Other Useful Experiences**\n\n- You've worked with or designed high volume messaging services at scale\n- Deep understanding of telephony or VOIP systems. You've previously lead a technical integration with a telephony provider such as Twilio, Bandwidth, etc\n- Building microservices and distributed systems\n- Fraud detection at scale\n- Implementing analytics pipelines\n- Solid understanding of software testing principles\n- Working with AWS or other cloud computing service\n\n### What you'll be doing\n\n- Designing, developing, and leading others in building fast, scalable server features and services to support the Burner mobile applications.\n- Maintaining and improving existing infrastructure, and be willing to jump in when things break.\n- Working closely with the DevOps team to monitor performance and coordinate deploys across platform services.\n- Brainstorming potential features to align with company strategy. We believe good ideas come throughout the organization and will give you the support to make your idea a reality.\n- Work with junior team members as the technical lead on projects and as a mentor.\n\n### Perks and Benefits\n\n- Health and Dental coverage for employees, dependents, and domestic partners\n- 401K with company 4% match\n- Choose how you want to invest in your career development. We reimburse for training, conferences, and online learning resources.\n- Work remotely in style. Get a stipend to set up or enhance your remote work setup.\n\n### Our Hiring Process\n\nOur hiring process is structured to find talented, eager people who are looking for something more than just another engineering role. We think the hiring process should assess your ability to succeed day to day at Ad Hoc Labs. You'll meet a cross section of the team you'll work with daily and we'll work through example problems and scenarios you'll encounter in the work, not problems meant to be gotchas. No BS, we promise. We're looking for people that have a solid technical foundation, clear communicators, and those excited about the opportunity here at Ad Hoc Labs.\n\n### Our values\n\nWe believe that a team is more than the sum of its parts. # Role\nWe are looking for a passionate Backend Engineer that wants to own and help shape our microservices architecture. The main responsibility for this role is to produce high quality code that is robust, including designing data models for scalability and performance.\n \nOne area our application is growing into is Documents management, so having previous experience in similar problems areas, like revision and approval workflows, auditing of projects, access control levels (ACL) is a big plus for this position.\n\nPrevious experience on managing projects and leading a team of developers is a prerequisite for this role. You will be working as part of a small and highly effective 100% remote team, taking part in major technical decisions, defining technical requirements, scoping and helping to create new features for our Bimsync application with the team. \n\nAs one of the lead developers in the team, you are expected to have a good structural thinking, being able to break-down complex problems into smaller parts that can be delivered to production independently in a timeboxed fashion. \n# What we are looking for\nWe believe in a growing and learning mindset, where people will be up to face a new challenge and learn a new technology when needed. Thus, having the right skills and a positive attitude to learning is more important for us than the degree. A BS/MS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related subject is important, as we value an understanding of the fundamentals, but it’s not a prerequisite.\n\nWe define ourselves as an agile company, so being open for feedback and adapting to change is core to being a good fit to our team. Our company's working language is English, so we expect all candidates to effectively communicate (written and spoken).\n\nAs a lead developer, you are expected to be an excellent communicator, able to consider different points of view (Product, Sales, other devs) and manage these expectations in order to settle and deliver on a plan.\n\nYou should have a very good understanding of backend technologies and the different challenges of creating backend services that are cloud native, having previously developed applications in the public cloud (AWS preferably). We expect a strong intimacy with Java, as most of our backend stack is written in this language. We also look for proficient knowledge of databases, both SQL and NoSQL, to tune and shape the best data structures for each specific microservice. Another important point is having familiarity with REST APIs and a good understanding of backwards compatibility for public APIs. An interest and an ability to fix and contribute to the frontend React code is a bonus point for this position.\n\nThis position is open for fully remote, but has a requirement of being located in the EU.\n# What we offer\nYou will be part of an amazing journey to transform the construction industry with a bold and caring team. Along this path, we will challenge each other, have difficult open conversations and develop, as we learn.\n\nIn addition to the above, we will also take care of you and provide you with the right challenges for growth. Some of our benefits:\n\n* Paid time off (25 vacation days per year)\n* Flexible working hours\n* Full remote possible\n* Share options program\n* Company gatherings twice a year (in person when possible again)\n\n# Location\n**EU**\n\n# About Catenda\nCatenda is a Norwegian scale-up company with a global ambition to make the construction industry data-driven, with less waste and greater transparency along the way.\n\nOur company values are: Openness and Quality.\n\nWe believe in open standards for all our customer data to achieve interoperability between applications, from inception, through design and construction onto the maintenance of a building. Another core belief is that our customers should have full control over their data: all data that goes in, can also be exported out.\n\nWe value quality of the code and the product by working as a tight and effective distributed development team, preferably asynchronously, often sharing screens to collaborate. Catenda has offices in Oslo and Bergen, composed by an international team of 10+ nationalities working remotely across the EU.\n\nOur solution, Bimsync, is a cloud-based collaboration platform, consisting of a web application, a mobile application and our APIs. Many companies across the world are using our products to build better airports, hospitals, stadiums, homes and roads.\n\nOur technology stack runs 100% on AWS, using the most appropriate technology for the problem at hand. Our backend is mostly in Java and we are currently using different managed databases in our backend, like PostgreSQL, MySQL and DocumentDB. Our frontend is in Javascript, using React and React Native for our mobile app (iOS and Android).\n\n \n\n#Salary and compensation\n$80,000 — $110,000/year\n\n\n#Location\nEu

Your work as an experienced Java engineer will empower over 9,000 businesses around the world to provide great customer service, and will support the other senior engineers on your team. \n\nWe leverage Solr for several tools at Help Scout. Knowledge or even expertise in Solr is desired. However, as our data needs grow we look beyond search and towards Big Data solutions. We are seeking someone who can join the team and help us solve all kinds of data processing and analysis problems.\n\nCurrently at Help Scout\n* We develop in Java, Kotlin, JavaScript and PHP\n* We leverage AWS, RabbitMQ, Aurora MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Apache Solr\n* We also use Slack, Jira, Trello, Github, Jenkins\n\n# Responsibilities\n * You will be the fourth member of our search and data services team, collaborating on the next generation of our large-scale search and reporting service and associated infrastructure. On a daily basis, you'll work on adding new functionality, improving existing code, and API endpoints while maintaining focus on testing and documentation.\n* We currently index millions of search and report events every day and at peak hours our API handles tens of thousands of transactions a minute. You will play a key role in evolving our services to handle 10X that.\n* You will own some of our large, upcoming challenges and collaborate with your team on all of these: building a streaming data reports pipeline, reworking how we index data and retrieve data to scale while controlling infrastructure costs, and significantly improving our search relevancy and customer-facing reporting capabilities. \n* Our engineering team is over 40 people, more than half the company. As part of the search and data team you will be involved in the decisions made regarding implementation, testing, and backlog prioritization. You will collaborate with the rest of the engineering team through code, reviews. You will participate in making architectural discussion.\n* We work in using iterative software approach, communicate mostly via Slack and are committed to remote, agile development. When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with tests and tag your team for review - using video and screen-sharing as needed. Your development builds can be easily tested on environments that closely match production. You’ll work autonomously for the most part and we trust you to get work done when/where you can be productive.\n* Your team performs engineering support when a question can’t be answered by our in-house support team and passes triage. We’ll get you up-to-speed with engineering support so you can help our customers and improve the product along the way.\n* Everything is secondary to the customer experience. We expect you to have a keen sense of how your code will impact the experience in terms of performance, security and usability.\n* You'll be working with product people that challenge you to get better every day. The founders are technical and committed to creating a magical experience for customers.
