Position Description
You will be working with Toptal’s Growth Team, driving innovation and company growth at the intersection of business, data science, software engineering, and digital marketing. You will be responsible for growth and continued health of Toptal’s AdWords accounts across all business segments, managing large weekly budgets and optimizing and expanding the performance of the AdWords channel. You will be creating new growth hypotheses, guiding the development of analytics dashboards, and ensuring that all necessary data integrity tests and KPI health thresholds are in place. Responsibilities
  • Learn growth team skills quickly and effectively through training and independent study, prioritizing by impact and applying an analytical, problem solving approach to everything.

Working (remotely) as part of a small agile team of 3, you’ll help deliver the next iteration of our points loyalty platform. You will work on the web applications and services that provide points information to the user and other internal web applications within Groupon. Our services are written in Clojure with a PostgreSQL database and our “front end” (the term is used loosely here) is served using Node.js – more than 80% of our work is on the Clojure side. We’re OK with bringing you up to speed on Clojure, especially if this is exciting to you: say you’ve been using Java for a long time and eyeing it, or say you’ve written a whole bunch of custom emacs lisp and it was fun, or say you just learn a lot of languages.

We often remote pair, although we’re keeping the number of developers at an odd number for now, so we’re looking for someone who can communicate while coding, especially if you can say, “I have no idea what you just meant,” and who can also tackle a pull request on their own (after we get you up to speed on our system, of course).

It would be nice, but not required, to see you bring to the team your experience designing very high throughput transactional systems (50k writes per minute). You should be able to write test suites for your code that exercise complicated code paths and prevent production mishaps. Every time we push out new code is an opportunity to delight thousands of customers (or a risk of making a bad day for those people).
  • Strong understanding of network programming, and operating system fundamentals. You’ve used command line tools to debug networking issues, know the difference between processes and threads, and understand the challenges of building software in the cloud.
  • Write good code. You should have examples of code you have written that is easy to read, maintainable, and testable. You should be able to decompose complicated problems into elegant solutions anyone on the engineering team can understand.
  • Always learning. This is a Python position, but you don’t need to have a ton of production Python experience. You are excited to learn our tech stack, and to help lead it forward. You’re comfortable making the right call when it comes to choosing between new technologies and tried and true standbys.
  • Significant production experience. You have 2+ years of experience shipping and maintaining production code that is used by 1000s of people. You have run into the edge cases of operating at scale, and can teach us how to avoid them.
