I enjoy working with people, helping them to understand their problems, and collaborating with them to design appropriate solutions.
Professionally, I work in software design and engineering, though I'm also lucky enough to be paid for the occasional traditional engineering design task. I'm extremely proficient with a wide range of development tools and cross-platform environments: from shell scripting, through compiler-based, and off-the-shelf apps. I have developed large mission critical apps on LAMP & MEAN stacks (MySQL, PHP, Python, Javascript/React, MongoDB), using databases (FileMaker, Access), and RAD tools (Python, AppleScript Studio, VB Scripting, VBA). Iโm a quick study, and enjoy the challenge of a new language/environment.
Projects of interest: ReactJS full-stack application for management of review and approval of inter-department data, replacing meetings & Excel sheets with a simple asynchronous UI; remediation of 20+ year-old mission-critical enterprise level system; mechanical design of an innovative pressure switching assembly for a downhole tool; a management, payment, and web & print publishing tool for music festival; a template-based charting publishing tool for a City of London web analysts firm; writing & presenting 3-day PHP MySQL training course for international publishing company; a response analysis tool for a UK financial standards body; a web-based planning tool for UNSW; a project management system for a multi-national oil services company; the business process redesign and documentation for an oil company; a magazine layout tool for car magazines.
Privately, I provide pro-bono support and development for local arts & music organisations. My interests include music, foreign languages, history, philosophy, maker electronics, personal fabrication, and crime fiction. My aim - be a little more Renaissance, one day at a time.
As a former technical journalist, with experience in education and training, I also have a particular interest in the clear presentation of information, through software, the written word, or the design of info-graphics.
